Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, the food is pretty solid/tasty, albeit pretty damn pricey though. I first came here once in December of 2020 when I was visiting Chicago and remember how much the bill was for typical Filipino dishes and was like, man, I'd never go back here given the prices. The sisig was pretty good, but like $20! Fast forward to March of 2022. I now live in Chicago, lol... and literally less than a 3-4 minute walk from this place so I figured eventually I'd come back to try it again since I love Filipino food. I called them on the phone on a Thursday night, and the man I spoke with in the phone was a bit rude and short with me when I asked about their weekend bottomless mimosa specials. I'm sure the restaurant was busy, but if you want to retain customers or bring in new customer's, I'd expect more friendly attitudes. Joke's on me cause I came back here yesterday, on a Saturday, and didn't order food, but just drinks with a friend. We got a mimosa, Bloody Mary, and some beer, which were all on specials. Mimosas being $4, Bloody Mary being $8, and the beer of the month was $5 and it was draft (Begyle brewing). The man who served us didn't let us sit in the the patio because he said it wasn't open. I was a bit disappointed considering it was the first day above 65 degrees in Chicago during the late winter/early spring, but it's fine since we were sat towards the front in the window and he opened up the windows for us. The breeze was perfect. I really like that this place has a LGBTQ+ pride flag and that play some interesting and good music. While I don't think I'd be a frequent customer here because of the higher prices, I'm glad to have this in the neighborhood as an option because the food is good. On a side note, please don't come here expecting extremely authentic Filipino food. As the owner has mentioned, they have had to adapt to the neighborhood's taste buds, otherwise they would not survive, as plenty of non-Filipinos haven't had Filipino food before, so they really gotta market their food to where they are. There's literally a reason why this is like the only Filipino restaurant in the area. To recap, I'll for sure come back to try their bottomless mimosa deal which is currently $30 and includes as many mimosas as you desire plus an entree for an hour and 30 minute time frame. First time trying Filipino food and this was pretty good! The pork ribs adobo sauce was very flavorful and I really liked the rice LOL. Some of the portions like the lechon sisig (meat only) and vegetables were smaller than expected. Overall the food was a little on the oiler and saltier side for my taste, but others might disagree. Came here on a random Sunday after visiting the bittersweet bake shop right down the street. Got hungry saw the Filipino name on the sign and decided to give it a random try. We had no reservations and luckily there was only another couple there and also got lucky on a Sunday to find street parking right across the street. For a breakfast brunch time that we arrive the menu still is very extensive lots of choices and very authentic as far as the naming and what is described in the ingredients and accompaniments. We truly enjoyed our brunch here and would definitely come back. The pricing is very fair considering the area. Otherwise it's excellent, but as is I don't like sweet cevice, even though we asked for and made sure the cevice was not sweet. My wife could eat it, I could not! Nice ambiance. Parking can be a problem! Server was nice but did not know the food he was serving! The adobo chicken was also sweet, even though I was told it was not!!!! Returned! Skirt stake was excellent, as was the beef shank stew. The creme bruelee would have been good if it was not layered with a 1/32 Th of an inch sugar crust coated with powered sugar. We celebrated my husband's birthday at Kubo Chicago. Owner Christine was so helpful with our reservations and order. The Kamayan feast was delicious and freshly prepared right before us. It was our first time to eat Kamayan style at a restaurant as a family. We especially enjoyed the tuna ceviche, shrimp, mussels, and lechon sisig. Great food options and variety of Filipino food. Definitely satisfies the cravings since we don't have many options in Milwaukee at all so good to know this place isn't TOO far. We were in the lakeview area on this nice day, and I did some digging to find a patio that served good Asian food. This was the result, and I will say it is a difficult find! However, the service and food were both great, as well as the pleasantly surprising fun martini list! We started with some martinis and appetizers and enjoyed the nice summer day on this cute patio. The tuna ceviche and fried calamari were both tasty and great to share. I also got the whole seabass, which was delicious with a nice sweet and sour sauce. I was a little disappointed that no veggies or sides besides rice was served with the fish though. My mom's crab crusted salmon was tasty as well. The food at kubo was phenomenal, and the staff were so friendly! This would be a great spot for a date night or to introduce someone to introduce Filipino food to. The chicken lumpia were gigantic and came out fast. I loved the adobo ribs and lechon. The ribs were so tender, savory and sweet. The adobo sauce was quite addictive. The lechon came with two sauces: a vinegar sauce and a thicker sauce that was similar to honey mustard but actually made with pate (liver paste). I liked the pate sauce more. The halo halo was very sweet and tasty, they have a separate bowl and the staff even mixed it up for us. This place is a solid two dollar signs, you'll be super full after a 3-course meal since the portions are good. There are plenty of parking on the street here too. First off, the food is amazing. The calamari was plentiful and had great flavor. The lumpia's were decent size and shareable. The Lechon kawali was absolutely delicious. Juicy and the skin had a nice crunch to it without it being overwhelming. The drinks were nicely crafted and had some special Filipino elements to them. The service was quick, attentive, and super super friendly and down to earth. It was fantastic just talking to them conversationally and they made me feel like home. I came back to Chicago for the holidays and went out because my nephews and I were craving good Filipino food. We saw the good reviews at Kubo and was really excited to try it out. The review is not based on Kamayan that needs 2 days ahead of time for reservation. The quality of the food is above average but not phenomenal. The 3 star review is because of the small portions for the price. Even the garlic rice portion for each dish is literally half a cup. This is such a fun spot for great food! There's a nice patio so this is perfect for the summer. The best part is the food - we got to try a couple different Filipino dishes and they were all so good! We came for brunch and had a great experience. For main dishes we got the Filipino bangsilog (fried milk fish) and longsilog (Filipino sausage). Both of these dishes were so tasty!! The milk fish had great flavor and texture, it was crispy on the outside and super tender on the inside. The sausage also had really good flavor, it was savory and had a hint of sweetness. I personally liked the sausage dish better but you can't go wrong with either. They both came with sides of fried garlic rice, fried eggs, and tomato and onion and they were the perfect compliments to the milk fish and sausage. We also tried the halo halo dessert since we were curious to see what it's like and I'm glad we got it! This dessert is a shaved ice and ube ice cream base and topped with red bean, coconut, and various fruit jellies. The ice cream was so good and this dessert was really fun to eat. I don't know many other places in Chicago that specialize in Filipino cuisine, so I'm glad I found this place and got to try some new food! There was many great things to say about this restaurant. First the customer service was great. The waiter suggested some really tasty things to us as this was our first time eating this cuisine. He was also very enthusiastic and friendly. The grilled longanissa was so tasty. It was tender and great flavor. For me it's hard to find a great sausage that's not to porky or gamey. This was it. We also had the Pork Ribs Adobo. They were decent, but I felt they would have been cooked a tinch less. The chicken egg rolls & ten accompanying sauce were tasty. Pear martini This was sweet and refreshing. Tasted like juice. I could barely taste the alcohol and at the bottom was a cherry. Bourbon ginger martini A little stronger but still good. You can taste the bourbon ginger and Vodka but it was good. The waitress had recommended it and we are glad she did. Tuna cerviche This was good. It had diced bell peppers in it and had a strong taste of ginger. The tuna was cut up into large chunks. I feel like if it was diced a little smaller it would have been perfect. The chips tasted fresh but were small so it was hard to get everything on the chip, since the tuna chunks were very large. I ended up cutting the tuna up into smaller pieces so I can get all of the flavors. Fried shrimp with aoli Shrimp was large and lightly beaded which tasted great! This came with aoli sauce which I personally was not a fan of but my friends were. I thought the shrimp by itself tasted great. Fried calamari This was heavily breaded with not much meat. I tried different pieces and for some reason tasted more of the breading that's the meat. Pancit This was good. This came with chicken and shrimp and lots of noodles. Te flavoring was perfect and tasted just like authentic Pancit Pompano (fish) Crunchy with a sweet & sour sauce. The presentation was great and the seasoning was perfect. This was everyone's favorite Adobo chicken Same seasoning as the pork. I personally like the taste of chicken more so I did like this more than the pork. The meat fell off the bone so easily and was perfectly cooked Pork adobo Sweet and savory the meat fell off the bone. We got this on the house because they miss heard us and we got it anyways. My cousin and I came here after been wanting to for some time now. Ambiance: Intimate indoor seating with some tables and bar seats. Covered patio seating as well, which was a good size and had a bomb playlist going (Destiny's Child, Rihanna, PCD, etc haha). Service: The host/waiters were very nice and friendly. They had us leave our cart inside by the door and we felt like it was safe enough to do so. Food: We shared their Pork Adobo Ribs and Lechon Sisig. The ribs had a typical "Filipino bbq" smell which is nostalgic for us. It wasn't dry and tasted crisp in some areas. Yummy! The sisig was one of the better ones I've tried in Chicago. It had a good amount of pork and was flavorful. My cousin thought it could've been more salty by adding more soy sauce but her tolerance is high; for me it was perfect. Wish it was less oily though! Our faces were slick afterwards. Both dishes went well with the garlic fried rice. From their extensive drink list, I chose the Kubo Martini and K had the Mango Mojito. Both were mango-based and refreshing. I'm not usually a fan of martinis but this one was my most favorite I've tried. It tasted like they used the canned mango juice instead of real fruit, and I'm not mad at it. And it was made with vodka instead of gin, which mixed well with the mango. My first time here but it is 5 out of 10! For a foodie like me, i just want to make a clarification that this place caters regional dishes/menu specifically from Negros Island region which means it has specific tastes, resources and spices true to the area. This is my take on my experience on this place: Ambiance: - very welcoming as they have rainbow flag in their restaurant. However, the place is a bit dark; decors are honestly very all over the place just like hole in fhe wall vibe (i am not critical about this but it is crucial for the appeal); maybe i was expecting for something since the place called "kubo" means nipa hut- there are nothing related to "kubo" in my experience (i used to live in kubo growing up). Nonetheless, this place is accomodating. Service: - 9/10! Did an incredible job of always checking us out, refilling water and make sure we are well accomodated. Food: - we ordered three dishes: one appetizer and two mains (with fried rice). - A. appetizer: chicken strips (rate: 2/10). Reason behind this is that i was bland to be honest. The way they cooked it was over fried to the point that chicken became dry. It was really lack of seasoning. Portion wise, this is basically not shareable portion because in my opinion it is design for one person. And pricey for its portion. - B.1. Main dish: Escabeche- deep fried Pompano topped over on the bed of (supposedly tomato base) seemed like filipino banana ketchup base sauce with some veggies. Rate: 4/10. Reasons for this rate were mainly on: 1. The flavor of the escabeche sauce which made the sweet ketchup base sauce over powering; 2. They focused more on aesthetic (nothing is wrong with this) vs balance of flavor of both deep fried fish and the escabeche sauce. - B.2. Sizzling Kansi. Kansi is delicacy in Negros region. To be fair i have travelled Negros for several times and had this dozens of times too. They used batwan for this, for the context batwan is super sour fruit base ingredient of kansi (sourer than tamarind). Im not sure but if you cant use batwan, just use tamarind. However in the case of their Kansi, it lacked sourness. I could call this kansi as regular bulalo with a splash of lemon juice or vinegar! Nothing special just bulalo soup on a hot bowl. Although on the bright side, i liked the consistency of the soup. Id rate this 4/10 -C. Garlic Fried rice. This was the most bland garlic fried rice i have tasted. Sorry, but luckily i ordered some of the side sauces like vinegar, soysauce and fish sauce. Id rate it 3/10. If you come here to experience Philippines, this is a regional base restaurant that specialized in Negros region area. read more

There were several large groups (8+ people) and the restaurant seemed to accommodate everyone well. Half of our party also showed up 20 min early, but they were able to seat them right away while waiting for the rest. Remember that this is a Filipino-American restaurant, so it is not truly authentic Filipino food like the home cooked filipino food I had growing up in my filipino family. The food was good, the pancit and the halo-halo was the best of what we ordered. They also have Calamansi juice (similar to lemonade but a little sweeter), which I recommend to people new to Filipino culture to try. We went here to celebrate on a Friday night, and every dish that we ordered was confirmation that we picked the right place. This is Filipino food elevated to an artistic place, with the same integrity of flavor as the traditional dishes. I'd say the same about the inventive cocktails: lychee, mango, pineapple, etc. I can't say enough good things about the attentiveness of service, as well as the rice! I can count the number of Filipino restaurants that provide the perfect rice to ulam ratio on one hand, and Kubo is excellent at that. After attending the White Sox game, we returned to our son's Wrigleyville apartment Sunday afternoon (7-30-23) and were decided where to eat dinner. I searched for Bayan Ko restaurant on Montrose Avenue but read it was already closed (5:00 pm) so my son recommended Kubo which was closer and open. We arrived and discovered a disco party was happening on the patio. The host/owner asked if wanted to sit inside for a quieter setting but we declined as we wanted to join the party!! The patio had a great DJ playing terrific mixes as a big group was colorfully dancing and celebrating a groovy occasion of some sort. I was floored to see beer from the Philippines, including San Miguel and Red Horse on the menu and ordered the San Mig Lite. We started with the Tuna Ceviche, or "kinilaw" which was tasty and had nice chunks of tuna meat. We also had the Shrimp Curry, Lechon Kawali, Sizzling Kansi, and Longanisa burger, which were all delicious. We can't wait to go back for the weekend brunch with unlimited mimosas! Also we'll have to try the boodle fight with a big group sometime soon! Especially, on DJ afternoons! I had the best time here on Saturday! First of all, their drink menu is full of fruity martinis, my fave! I tried the blueberry and the pomegranate and they were perfect. We wanted the crab crusted salmon but they were out so we just shared appetizers instead-- the truffle parmesan fries and the lumpia were my faves. They had a large reservation that came in shortly after we did so they suggested bar seating, which was more than fine with us. The bartender was busy making all those gorgeous martinis for everyone but he was really nice to us. Truly, there are so many reasons to return. The food was delicious, the service was outstanding and the ambiance was great! If you love genuine Philippino food this spot is a must!!!

It was raining buckets the evening we stopped in to catch a friend's show across the street at 773. Wife had the pancit, I had the pork ribs adobo. Big disappointment with the pancit was teeny tiny baby shrimp they used in the dish. We may be self admitted seafood snoots, but don't come at us with the teeny tiny baby "shrimpt", it is an immediate turn off and hard to take you seriously. The pork adobo was actually tasty and the meat was very tender and fell right off the bone. I also enjoyed the cabbage mix salad they served as a side, the rice side that came with it was boring and bland. I tried a Filipino negra beer off the menu at $7 and enjoyed it. The wife opted for the french martini at $10 (it was heavy on the chambord). The crowd was older when we first arrived, but then became more mixed as the evening progressed. The atmosphere was nothing special, wood floor, tables and chairs, pics/paintings, and some Halloween decorations. Upon arrival, we were seated at a back table facing both the bathrooms and the kitchen, odd choice. Normally we would have moved but at this point, after commuting down town in the rain and mess and parking we were just glad to be out of it. We placed our umbrellas under the small table when we were seated, which I think caused concern for the staff, so they offered to place our umbrellas in a bucket at the front door and then mopped the floor near our table. Nice touch but the action seemed reactive and seemingly oblivious to the weather outside (it rained all evening/early morning). As it was, I could see that the back of the kitchen was open to the outside from my point of view at my table, I just thought it was odd. Throughout our dinner, the staff would clear and clean table spaces and arrange the tables and chairs. I found this to be disrupting because it created a lot of noise due to the wood floors. It ultimately distracted from both the meal and the dining experience in my opinion; and the staff once again, seemed oblivious to the effect of the action. As for price, I actually thought it was reasonably priced for where it is located, but the entrée portions seemed small for the price. Stopped in for quick apps before going out to Whim. Patio is nice. Staff was prompt. Didn't need reservations on a Friday night. read more
