It's never a good idea to do your taxes on an empty stomach so I stopped here for a quick lunch. When I saw the buffet through the window I was excited. I've tried about a half dozen Indian restaurants in Baltimore and this is my new favorite. The chicken tikka and chicken tikka masala were tender and flavorful. Most surprising is how varied the spices are among the dishes. Many times restaurants will use leftover tandoori chicken for their tikka masala the next day, but this was fresh and delicious. The naan was also fresh - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Salads were fresh and delicious. I was really surprised at the variety of flavors found in each dish and was especially happy with the aloo gobi. Too bad I only had 15 minutes to spend in the restaurant. FOOD: Kumari has a great menu of Nepalese items with names that are both exotic and familiar. Lots of different options with a slightly different flavor profile than typical Indian cuisine, but extremely delicious nonetheless. ATMOSPHERE: The establishment is a little quiet. I think a lot of their business comes from takeout orders instead of dine-ins. But they do offer service like any other restaurant. SERVICE: The staff has always been very friendly and kind every time I visit. They are diligent with our food and keeping the table clean. read more

I think my wife misdialed the phone number for Kumari. I think she ordered dinner from a nursing home instead. Bland, watery, tasteless. We couldn't tell the lentils from the eggplant. Even the rice was somehow blander than typical bland rice. And what's with the Tika Masala? The color was the same intense crimson as a '59 MGA I once owned. Food should never be THAT red. But hey...they still managed to make it tasteless. I'm giving it two stars because I usually reserve one star for places that send me to the emergency room. But it was close, I almost slipped into a coma from this incredibly boring food. The food choices in this neighborhood have gotten so poor that a place like this can not only get away with serving this crap but it actually is getting 4 stars on yelp!?! Come on people! I ordered the chicken chili(hot) and the lemon basmati rice. Both dishes are amazing. The chicken chili comes with a small container of white rice and the spice is very good for hot. The lemon rice has a ton of flavor. I will definitely be ordering again! read more

Excellent Indian restaurant. We picked up Kumari to go and it was truly delicious. We've ordered the Lamb Jalfrezi, Malai Kofta, and the Chicken Tikka Masala and all items have been warm, wonderfully spiced, and the portions were large. The naan and the pakoras are also made extremely well. My meal has been ready approximately when I've asked for it as well. Not sure if they mixed up the salt with the sugar, but our Chicken Tikka Marsala and Butter Chicken both tasted like candy. No spice or flavors, just sweet, sugary, cold, liquidy soup. I got takeout from Kumari tonight and I was pleasantly surprised. The service was fast, the portion size of my chicken tikka was pretty large, and the samosas had a really good potato filling. The chicken tikka was good, but on the sweeter side of what I am used to. They remembered to include the chutneys and didn't skimp on them. For a quick Indian/Nepalese fix, order out at Kumari. I was stuck in city traffic today after work and starving on top of that. All I could think of was food, and then Kumari popped into my head. Gave them a call and was greeted by a friendly welcoming and accommodating voice! I ordered the chicken tikka masala, and had to describe my second dish cause I didn't know the actual name - the spinach and corn dish. While the second one wasn't technically on their menu, she knew exactly what I was talking about and put in on my order, and said she'd have it ready in 20 minutes. I walked in the door 19 minutes after, and there my order was, sitting on the counter with a golden light shining on it (just kidding, that was hunger delirium kicking in). The same voice that answered the phone met me at the counter and offered the same friendly service. I asked her for the name of the spinach and corn dish, but I couldn't even pronounce it, so I'm glad to have her there. Walked out with my food, and back home to my couch with my two dish spread and rice. So good. Creamy chicken tikka tomato sauce, both dishes with an appropriate amount of spice. I've always been exceptionally pleased with the quality of food and service. Their saag is amazing and so is their naan, and honestly everything I've ever tried from them. They served me overcook chicken it was dried out and the equivalent of shoe leather. Was completely inedible. When I said something about it they charged me full price. It's a shame. This place is sadly disappointing. I came in for the buffet. There are 28 seats and the buffet table is against the kitchen door. The tables were not cleaned off. When I walked in he asked where I wanted to sit and there were plates on every table, even after people had left. There is only 1 person working the restaurant floor. The food is equally unimpressive. The chicken is over cooked. The fish was good if its covered in sauces. The chili chicken was over cooked and had no discernable spice. The vegetable korma has good flavor but it tasted like frozen vegetables in a korma sauce. I finished an entire plate at the buffet before I received any naan and it was under cooked. The kheer dessert is a rice pudding and is very sweet and grainy. I will not return here. read more

The buffet is definitely they way to go if you're going to eat here. The entrees at dinner time are a little pricy - and there's almost too much to choose from. The buffet is a great deal (if you are able to make it during the week!) and you can try a bunch of different things, which is my favorite thing to do at Indian restaurants. There were a lot of people dining alone, so don't be afraid to stop in for lunch if you're in the area by yourself! Both times I've been here the staff has been friendly. Located next to Shoppers in Locust Point, this Kumari is the younger sibling to the Kumari on Charles St in Mt Vernon. The lunch buffet here, compared to the other location's, promises the same excellent service and the same delicious complimentary chai tea, with about 2/3 of the variety. It is priced more inexpensively, though, at $9.95. For the lunch buffet, you'll be able to choose from a variety of chutneys, ~10 different dishes (including aloo fish, butter chicken, pakora, spinach paneer, goat curry), and one dessert like gulab jamun (doughnuts in sweet syrup). Shortly after you're seated, a basket of naan will be brought to your table. During my most recent visit, the naan was initially warm and fluffy; however, after a few minutes, the heat magically dissipated and the texture became chewy and tough. Major bummer. At the bare minimum, an Indian buffet should be able to make great naan that can taste delicious for more than a few minutes! The dining area is just a small and cozy room, and it's easy to overhear conversations at adjacent tables. If you'd prefer a dining space where you can have a more private conversation, or if you want more variety, head north to the Indian buffet mecca on Charles street in Mt Vernon, featuring four Indian buffets (Akbar, Nepal House, Indigma, and Kumari) within a few blocks of each other. First - the buffet is a great way to taste a little bit of items you might not be familiar with, or that you might not normally order. The restaurant is in a strip mall & after thinking it's a completely random spot for a restaurant - finally checked it out. It's BYOB, which is awesome! Service was great - helping to decipher menu items and filled beverages quickly. For delivery tonight - Generous portions, arrived still hot at my door - even the Nepali tea! I've eaten at Kumari three times now and really enjoyed all of my meals. The service is excellent and it's BYOB. You can stop by the Wine Market (in the plaza just a block away) and get a nice bottle of wine or beer to go with your meal, which makes for a cheaper than usual night out. (I don't even think they charge a corking fee). This isn't the best Indian/Nepalese food I've ever had, but in comparison to other Baltimore restaurants (as opposed to Philly), it certainly stands out. I enjoy getting the Nepali Bhojan (non-vegetarian) and Daal Bhat Set (vegetarian), which seem to be Nepalese versions of Bento. You get a little bit of a number of dishes to try, and it's all very good. All of the Indian dishes I've had have been above average, and the naan and chutneys are great. Also, as others have said, the Chai is excellent. This Kumari has the same menu as the Mount Vernon Kumari, and the food seems to taste the same, so I'm assuming that they're owned/operated by the same people. This was my first time at Kumari, they just opened a week or two ago. I had the Katchumber salad and the goat curry. Both dishes were excellent, great taste and the ingredients all seemed very fresh. The service was really good as well, very professional attentive(while not being annoying) and polite. Definitely will be back. Went to Kumari this evening and was pleasantly surprised! The restaurant is located in a shopping store center (including Shoppers, Chipotle and Starbucks) so parking was no problem. The decor was warm and comforting and made the experience here that much better. Our host/waiter was always ready to refill our waters and answered any questions we had about the dishes on the menu. We ordered the meat samosas, garlic naan and the chicken marsala. All the flavors meshed well and the dipping sauces that came with the starter "chips" were delicious. The naan was cooked to perfection and had a slight crisp on the outer edges. Enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and the service! Gave it four stars just because the prices are a little higher than other Indian restaurants but regardless, I will definitely come back! read more

I've been here for both dinner and the lunch buffet. Dinner is nice enough, with a pretty solid interpretation of the classic Indian "hotel" food, which is to say, restaurant food as opposed to home cooking in India. The Nepali specialties I've tried are some noodles, momo dumplings, and the classic dal bhat tarkari (rice lentils and vegetables). All are pretty tasty, but not really special. I'd say stick to the more indian style dishes. Dinner is a little on the pricey side compared to other Indian places, but the ambience is clean and quiet, so you're paying for that too. Almost every dish is rich: either creamy or oily. This isn't a bad thing, just something to be aware of. It can catch you off guard when you order baingan bharta, typically a flavorful thick mash of eggplants, and get a creamy eggplant curry instead. The richness is certainly in line with Indian expectations of food you get when eating out. The lunch buffet is where this place really shines. They definitely put their "A" lineup out on the buffet in terms of taste. There is always a light salad course, which I skip if I'm in a rush. For the vegetarian side, you'll usually get a veggie fritter, a spinach based dish, a lentil based one, and a paneer based one. The rice is always a veggie pilaf or meat/egg biryani. The meat and fish selection rotates, but expect a grilled chicken, chicken tikka masala, lamb or goat curry, and a fish dish (usually curry or manchurian). Naan bread is included, then add in dessert and tea, and this buffet is incredible! The selection is what makes this so great, you can try a bite of all your favorites, and they all taste great. The staff are super friendly too. If you're looking for a flavorful lunch in the area, I can't recommend this place enough. If you're looking for a quiet dinner for a small premium, come here, BYOB, and you probably won't be disappointed either. read more

I order from Kumari way too often. It's one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. I've even ordered and taken Kumari to friend's houses and they rave about the food. My usual order is the Coconut Korma (with shrimp) and garlic naan. Both are delicious and recommended. I'm knocking off a star simply for inconsistencies (and one consistency which drives me nuts). First off, there's not enough shrimp, and when I specify to add shrimp onto the order, they never do. Second, inconsistencies: sometimes there are cashews in the sauce (which I love) and sometimes there are none at all. The chefs need to communicate to make sure they are all following the same type of recipe. In addition, sometimes the shrimp is way overcooked. read more

Tried their various pakora apps which were really good. Chicken korma was good but it tasted kind of buttery/coconutty compared to other varieties ive had. Also the rice portion for takeout was small compared with other places. Online ordering made it very easy. Very large menu. Solid indian place; I hear the lunch buffet is good. Came in here for lunch with co-workers last week. We all did the lunch buffet and I was very pleased with it. It's a rather small buffet but for the price ($10), you can't beat it. Everything I tried was very tasty. Free naan at the table is also an added bonus. The restaurant is very small but they were able to accommodate our party of six. This review is for the KUMARI location on FORT AVE: Incredible food, go eat Nepalese/Indian elsewhere and then come back to KUMARI for the best. Clean restaurant, plenty of free parking, exceptionally nice wait staff, and incredibly seasoned, and wonderfully prepared food (lamb so tender it melts in your mouth!). I've yet to find anything on the menu that wasn't fantastic. In particular try the lamb saag, and momo dumplings to really get a taste of what they can do. My recommendation on nann choices would be their whole wheat roti (maybe the second best nann in the area). I drive thru the tunnel, or bike across the city to eat here... Take that as high praise indeed. Their food is priced on about the average for decent Indian/Nepalese, but I have found their portions to be a bit more generous. I haven't been there for the Buffet. The Butter Chicken and some of the other Indian staples are good. My problem is the price. I think most entrees are like $15 for the chicken dishes. It's just too much considering the food isn't spectacular. Most of the time I'm eating Indian around here, I'm at the places in Columbia, Maryland. I like House of India. I wish they would cut the prices by 1/3 and do a lot more business. I'll keep coming here, but not often. read more

The cauliflower was firm and not completely cooked in a aloo gobi and the samosa exterior tasted stale and was difficult to chew...
