There's also a lunch buffet that's a great deal even if not a huge selection (but whatever, when it comes to Indian food I'll eat whatever is put in front of me provided it's good quality). We don't have a lot of Indian options in South Baltimore so thank goodness Kumari is delicious! Their "spicy" here is not too bad, even for my gringa self, so if you love the chilis you may want to ask for an extra spicy option? Recommend: the Butter Chicken and the garlic naan. We went to the buffet today, I did not think the food was very good. I thought it was a little bland and there was not a lot of spice. The cauliflower was firm and not completely cooked in a aloo gobi and the samosa exterior tasted stale and was difficult to chew... I love to go here for the lunch buffet during my breaks, as it's within walking distance of my job. The service is pretty decent and the food is great, especially the butter chicken and fish. They taste very fresh every time. I love to finish everything off with the rice pudding and tea. The tea here is the most amazing 'desi' style tea I have had in a while. After about a year of living and working in India, I'm constantly missing Indian food. Kuamari is a good place to go for Indian food, especially their Malai Kofta and Mushroom Matar (full disclaimer, I'm obviously not Indian, but both dishes tasted similar to what I've had before). That being said, I don't feel like their Indian food is the best I've ever had. I feel like most dishes taste different. Their Tibetan and Nepalese dishes are much better, especially the Thukpa (oh god was it amazing). I haven't broken down and ordered the Dal Bhat yet (probably because I'm cheap and it was just so good and insanely inexpensive when I traveled in Nepal) but I suspect I'll order it soon. As far as the buffet, I'd give it a 3/5. Some dishes were great don't get me wrong, but most of the stuff was just O.K. My husband agreed with me on this. I've found this place much better for a regular dinner. Anyway, the staff is so nice and polite that I feel bad knocking them down a star for not having super authentic Indian food (I think the owners are from Nepal, so it makes a lot of sense that their Nepali dishes would be more authentic). I think you should try this place out, but maybe go with the Nepali food over the Indian dishes (unless you're craving the Kofta; that was really good). read more

I've avoided this place and I'm not sure why, which is exactly why I decided to eat here. I can't believe after driving by for so many years I didn't know about how good this place was. I came for lunch and when you walk in the place, though small smells absolutely amazing. I ordered the fish tikka masala and the vegetables malai kofta. The fish tikka masala was insane. It was so flavorful and the fish was cooked perfectly, I've had similar quality at a top restaurant in DC expect this place is half the price. I will come back here often just for that dish. The malai kofta however didn't taste right. I don't know if it was the vegetables or the vegetables in the sauce that didn't mesh, but I didn't love it. As far as friendly service and a good inexpensive meal, this is a great option. I think I will come for the buffet next time where I can try other things, again at a great price. We went to this place on Friday 6.1 and we thought that the food was awesome. We love indian food and have been to quite a few different restaurants. We ended up sharing the Chicken Tikka Masala with the garlic naan bread and we got Chicken Momos to start as the appetizer. This place is small but the portions of the food are normal for an indian restaurant with the exception of the amount of rice that you get with your dish. I personally liked that we had plenty of rice given that this is usually an item that you have to ask for more of because you are not given a enough when the dish is brought out. Wow, I am impressed! I was hungry at work and decided to order something healthy. I generally searched on Google for a "vegetarian restaurant" not because I am a vegetarian but really looking forward to a healthy meal and they recommend Kumari. After revising their menu... I ordered the "Chicken Coconut Korma" spicy. Let me just state that I am a real picky eater, and I am not easily impressed. I received the food the white rice was not like those Chinese carryout place, it was much better and of course a little more pricey. The sauce was in a huge bowl if I had another rice bowl there would be enough to feed to adults. I was in town for business and I stumbled upon this gem while killing some hours before my flight out. I walked by and saw the sign said that the lunch buffet was starting in 15 minutes so I waited until that started then walked in. The buffet has about 12-14 main dishes and 4 cold sides/salad type dishes. I'm vegan so I didn't try them all but the ones that I did were absolutely delicious. It tasted exactly what I suspect real authentic Indian food tastes like. The star of the show was the super fresh and hot garlic naan that comes straight from the kitchen (yum!). You can get as much as you like and it does not disappoint. I wish I lived in the area so I could frequent Kumari all the time. If I'm ever back in the area I definitely know where I will be heading. This used to be my go-to restaurant when I wanted to treat myself, but lately my food has been very subpar, to the point that I probably won't try it again. Last night I got the Lamb Masala and the food was terrible, I was really surprised. My rice was hard, thin and cold, like it had been sitting out for awhile and dried out, and there were no pieces of anise in my jasmine rice like there used to be. There wasn't even any condensation on the lid, so I'm pretty sure my rice was cold when it left the restaurant. The lamb was really tough, inedible-tough, and full of grissle that made chewing an Olympic sport to eat the dish, and the masala sauce had absolutely no flavor. Indian food is full of flavor, the way that they marry spices creates a flavorful explosion and I love the way good masala or curry can really show you all it's ingredients in layers when you eat it. But this dish was flat; no salt, no ginger, no garlic, no nothing; kinda reminded me of really bland white sauce like for Alfredo or Mac n cheese when someone doesn't add any seasoning to it. Boti Kaba Masala was my favorite dish to order from this place; they used to have some of the most flavorful and complex masala sauce, I've ordered the chicken and the salmon masala in the past from here for myself and friends and it was always excellent but the last two times I have ordered from here it was just really bland. I don't buy or cook lamb, so I only eat it when I order out from a Greek or Indian restaurant; it's usually really flavorful with lots of herbs and the lamb is usually really tender like it's been stewing all day long. I also grabbed Gulab Jamun, which is my favorite desert from here; that was also bad this time. It's a pastry dough ball in sweet syrup with coconut flakes; the coconut flakes were missing, there wasn't a lot of the syrup in the cup and the pastry balls were crumbly and dry even though they were sitting in syrup (stale). This was my last trial for this restaurant as we're all trapped in due to Corona virus and they're in my neighborhood so I try to support local businesses. I thought it would be a great idea to give my old favorite a try again and see if I had a better experience this time, but third time's the charm and unfortunately I won't order again. My food delivery was early, like 30 min earlier than the quoted time, and I thought I was lucky, but maybe they rushed my ordered? Two stars cuz the Naan was pretty flavorful, albeit undercooked; I tossed it back in the oven to crisp up a bit as it was still soft and really chewy with no char, not sure if they even warmed it up be honest. read more

To be honest, I found that I love the butter chicken and I don't get anything else because it's so good. I do like that Kumari has the lunch buffet because it allows a person like myself who afraid to try new Indian food the option of sampling different things. Went in for dinner early on a Saturday evening. We were the only diners in, and only one person came in to pick up take-out. It's too bad the business was slow, because the food is great! We ordered two vegetable dishes and the whole wheat roti bread. The waiter was very helpful and showed us all the dishes we could order as vegans - the options are pretty extensive. I was very, very pleasantly surprised by Kumari. I had this silly belief that good food couldnt not possibly be produced out of that strip mall and I was dead wrong. The menu is strong; not too big and it doesnt drift too much into non-Nepalese food. I'd recommend what I had to anyone; the Nepalese meal (veg). It's reasonably priced and is and excellent sampling of the cuisine. Most importantly, the food was executed flawlessly by someone who knows what they're doing and it is perfectly fresh; but it wont stay that way unless we give them business! I wanted to support local restaurants during the Covid 19 restrictions. I heard that apps and online ordering charged businesses large commissions and it is better to call and place your order by phone. I called the evening of Saturday May 16 and asked for delivery. The gentleman on the phone told me they were only making deliveries if cash was used to pay for the order. I asked why and was told "gas prices are high and it costs a lot to run a car". Confused, I asked how the cash would be exchanged as I wanted my order left outside my door. He then told me they were closed and hung up. I checked online and they were open and still accepting orders for delivery through yelp. The whole thing seemed shady. Makes me wonder what precautions they take with the food, if any! read more

I think I need to stop ordering deliveries/take outs from Indian restaurants as my experience has not been good at all. Food at these restaurants are very different if you are dining in. I moved to the area recently and saw good reviews about this restaurant. So one fine day, ordered Chicken Chilli, Garlic Naan, Keema Naan and Onion kulcha. (Chicken chilli is #1 item in the "Kumari Specialities" section of the menu) Let's talk about chicken chili: 1. It was one of the most sub standard preparation 2. The first 3 pieces I ate were all different in taste and texture (the meat seemed undercooked in one piece, stale taste in another). There was no consistency. 3. Could not eat more than 3-4 pieces, the capsicum and onions in it tasted much better. 4. Once I was done eating, my hand was all red with the gravy color. It didn't go even after washing with soap. This bothers me most. Is it some color you use to make the gravy red? If it is not getting washed from my hand, it might not be a good thing to eat? Naan were all good. I have had similar issues with non-veg dishes whenever I have ordered a pickup or delivery in other Indian restaurants (I'm referring to undercooked and stale meat). I might be wrong, but I think less attention is paid to deliveries or take outs in these restaurants. I guess I will not order a delivery or take out from this restaurant-definitely not Chicken Chilli . I might give it another shot and try dining in someday and hope things are better. But until then, I will not recommend this to any of my friends. read more

I had gone here for the lunch buffet on a Thursday. All the hot foods were nicely maintained, warm and delicious. The cold items were also nice and crisp. I have been to a handful of Indian/Nepali buffets and this once is definitely held in high regard. The item selection for the buffet wasn't overwhelming and you could tell they paid great attention to each item they are offering. Best tiki masala I've had. Came with sauce on the side, perfectly spiced, and topped with peppers. Huge difference from the pool of sauce I'm used to slopping through to find chicken when I order this dish elsewhere. Shabby strip mall digs. Not much seating. Damn fine food. Had the late lunch buffet. Everything was delicious. Nicely spiced and well seasoned. The included Nepal tea was warm and sweet. They said they regularly change the buffet selection so it's worth going back to try a variety of new dishes. There is an a la carte menu for dinner which is something we will definitely try. I ordered food here through order up and arrived to pick it up on my way home from work tonight which happens to be a really busy night. I got there and realized I had ordered from the other location (completely out of the way and during rush hour!). I apologized and told them it was entirely my fault and would just have to call the other location and let them know I wouldn't make it (the meal was already paid for but I figured nothing I could do about it). The woman at the front was so kind, SHE called the other location for me and had the guys in the back remake my order for no extra cost.
