I used to really enjoy coming here for 3 years. But the last years worth of visits has caused me to update my review. Service: when seated in the booths behind on the non hibachi side it is non existent. Had to leave with our ordering anything after a 15 min wait with no one acknowledging us. And the times that we do get waited on, is spotty at best. Food: got food served almost cold Hibachi: on 3 separate occasions , I informed the cook Not to put Garlic on my filet steak. All 3 times it was added. Each time I was trying to stop him but he did not pay attention. 3 times I could not eat the food. 3 times the server asked if I wanted it boxed up. I replied no that I could not eat it. I asked for management on the third time bc it was the third time. I was told there was no one available. I will not go back . Too many other places to spend my hard earned $$$ read more

Foods ok. I've been a bunch of times because it's close to my house. Always trying to give it another chance but never leave satisfied. Whether it's the service, the drinks or the food. We had a wonderful lunch here! Restaurant is very clean and very attractive. Our server was attentive and kind. My boyfriend got the Alaska roll and I got the white tuna roll with jalapeño. I never had jalapeño in my sushi before, its my new favorite thing! The spicy crunch was great! We had mai tais which were huge!! Not too strong, sweet and delicious. Had a delicious drink, the Blue Hawaiian, that I would recommend. Had the appetizer portion of vegetable tempora, which was perfectly adequate. Also ordered the appetizer chicken yakatori, which was inedible. I asked that kind of chicken they used, and they assured me they use only breast meat, but it had a really weird texture, and my first bite was so grizzled I had to spit it into my napkin. What got me what when our waitress tried to clear my tempora plate mid-dip into the accompanying sauce. I get being efficient, but that was just rude - is the kitchen short on dishes? We went to Kume for Hibachi and the staff and chef were wonderful. We are a special needs family and our daughter was in a wheelchair. We also had her service dog. The restaurant was packed Saturday evening and there were a ton of people waiting outside. The front desk lady was extremely courteous and accommodating. Stopped by here Sunday afternoon and unfortunately the service seems to be even slower! Ordered the shrimp tempura and edamame to start, both came out cold, like they had been sitting for a while. We had to ask for forks and knives for the tempura, but we were only given forks. Ordered two sushi rolls, the Christmas roll and the red lady (spicy tuna). Both were pretty good, but they were surprisingly small for the price. I no longer live in the area so I would be hard pressed to go out of my way to come back to such slow service. read more

Hibachi, Sushi and drinks Oh Mai! Well that's what you can get here. I'm a huge sushi fan but was wanting to try their hibachi. Decided to go out for dinner early. Still took us 45 minutes to get seated. Thems the breaks as mother would say. Worth the wait. You get dinner and a show. Each chef has their own flare and style to keep your attention while he starts cooking the food. You get the Saki squirted in your mouth, the onion volcano and the food thrown at you. YEAH! We got the chicken, shrimp, steak and a side of filet. The steak was really good but the filet was awesome! By looking at them on your plate you can't tell the difference but once in your mouth the filet just melts. The Good: The staff are super nice. Ken walked us through the menu explaining everything especially for the newbies like us. Very well appointed establishment with modern decor. Cool bathroom too. Two sided fish tank right when you walk in. Now the not so great: The wait can be bad. We got there before 6 and didn't get seated until 645. I think there might of been a mix up on where we were waiting so word to the wise either make a reservation or keep an eye on that list. The wind comes whipping through that front door and makes the already crowded front section not so fun. Again make a reservation during the cold months for sure. I used to be a fan but the past 2 visits have not been good. Did dine in and ordered a Mai tai and got something completely different. My hubby ordered a Jameson and ginger ale and it was basically all ginger ale. So we ordered sushi and it was nasty. Rice was hard and fish tasted so off. So we decided to give it 1 more go and ordered take out. WOW the order was messed up and nasty. I ordered no tomatoes on my salad, side of Teriyaki sauce, wanted fried rice with my hibachi dinner. Well I ended up getting a tomato on my salad and of course no sauce at all. Got white rice instead of fried. My vegetables were soggy and watery. No flavor at all. Great Sushi! Poor Service!! Went there for lunch today with my sister and we were very impressed with the decor and menu, the service was absolutely lousy!! Arrived at 1pm and were immediately shown to our table but the waitress never stopped by until almost 1:15 to take our drink orders. We ordered the Appetizer Tempura, a couple of hand rolls, and two signature sushi rolls - Christmas Roll and Beauty and the Beast. Thirty minutes later other tables that had come in within the past 15 minutes were receiving their appetizers, yet we had received NOTHING! And our waitress seemed to have taken a trip to Asia!! Finally at 1:50 half of our sushi order arrived but still no Appetizer!! (Nothing drives me crazy more, especially in a slow restaurant, when the appetizer or salad comes out with the entree!!) We asked our server, who spoke excellent English, where our Appetizer Tempura was and she told us we hadn't ordered any - until she looked at her slip and realized we had!! She muttered "Sorry" and then snarkily asked "Do you still want it?"!! No true apology, no concern on her part and absolutely no offer to comp the Appetizer or even offer a few dollars off the bill!! Nothing!! So, since it'd already been 45 minutes since we ordered we told her to cancel it at which point she just walked away never to be seen again until she brought the check! Luckily another waitress refilled our drinks for us!! We discussed not leaving a tip at all, but since she did deliver most of our food, and waitresses DO work for pennies, we decided on 12% instead of our usual 20%. But considering the look our waitress gave me as I passed her on my way back from the restroom I wish I'd gone with 0%!! So, normally, I'd say: "Never Again!" but frankly, the Sushi was fantastic!! I definitely will go back (maybe after they work out the kinks in a month or two?) to try the Hot Pot and Hibachi options and, yes, the Tempura Appetizer! LOL read more

I waited quite awhile to experience Kume, having just visited for the first times in the past two weeks, so perhaps I missed it when it was banging out great food, as other reviewers have claimed. I was hoping 5-star but discovered considerably less. Granted, my times have been limited to lunch, and I can't speak authoritatively on the sushi. But the lunch hibachi dishes are average. Basil chicken dinner entree, also not much above OK. Salads are supermarket iceberg with a trace of other pared veggies drizzled with a curious orange-colored sweet dressing. Blindfolded I'd guess, "French dressing with a little corn syrup and some lime juice from concentrate?" Clear soup? Well it was pretty hot when it arrived. But not especially flavorful or enticing as a set-up to the meal. In fact, nearly flavorless. Similarly, miso soup to my palate was quite shallow. These light broths should have a deeper flavor profile, if you'll pardon the Fieri-ism, but Kume is wading at the shallow end of the pool. I'd be shocked if the broths were prepared in-house. Hibachi steak was very good - tender and deeply beefy, perfectly cooked to my preferred medium-rare. Hibachi scallops OK, smallish to medium size and nothing special tastewise. Hibachi veggies also OK. Basil Chicken from the kitchen features a pale soy-based sauce with whole fresh basil fronds over a stir-fried medley of thinly sliced breast and fresh vegetables. The garnish on the plate for basil chicken was quite attractive, I'll point out. But the garnish was far more interesting than the once-again average-at-best entree it decorated. Lunch specials are $8-$12 plus drinks. Entrees $12-14 and up. Entrees I witnessed are ample if the size of your doggie bag is an important factor in choice of a destination. In four visits, service was satisfactory twice and quite slow and distracted twice. Friendly, yes. Attentive and prompt? Eh... Maybe they were short wait staff. (If the service is inconsistent or poor -- wherever you dine -- I think you can safely blame management for lack of training or oversight. The wait staff is usually trying to do the best they can.) Is Kume a serious contender for great Japanese food, whether you're comparing it to other similar rooms, local or metropolitan? Don't think so. Last night was our second try and it went out much less pleasant. The main reason is that Kume fell a victim of its own popularity. It was already packed at 5pm on Monday night. Waiting crowd overflown into the dining hall. Waitresses forgetting orders and mixing stuff up. Kitchen delivering dishes at the wrong time and far from the optimim order. And that all under constant cheers and noice coming from the hibachi room. Our daughter who knows sushi extremely well said she had to pull one piece of salmon from the roll and dump it because it was just bad cut. October 2017. Came here to the very first time to meet friends for dinner. My husband and I were craving hibachi so our friends suggested and place that we met them half way somewhere. Good thing we had reservations because there was a wait for the other people when we walked in at 6:15. We started off with a scorpion bowl and a blue Hawaiian drink. Both were very tasty. We all had hibachi. I stuck with my usual salmon while everyone else either did steak or chicken or combo. The starter salad and soup were fantastic. The entertainment was great and great to catch up with close friends. The portions were big so I had food to take Home for lunch the next day. Prices were good too. We recently ordered lunch (take-out) from Kume in Epping, NH, and were very surprised at the value and quality of the food. The food was ready quickly, and the gentleman behind the counter was very friendly. We chose the "Choose 3 Rolls" for $12 lunch special which was an amazing deal. Three packed sushi rolls (6 pcs. X 3) plus soup and salad. The soup was good, standard Japanese miso soup. The salad was good as well; great ginger dressing. The sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna roll was just spicy enough. The salmon avocado roll was also very good. The best was the sweet potato roll: straight out of the fryer, tempura-battered sweet potato with eel sauce. Can't get much better than that! We are regulars at Shio in Portsmouth, NH which has become an institution around here for great sushi, but Kume is definitely a contender. Bartender waking around, two people that looked like managers walking around. 15 minutes of sitting there and we have yet to see a server or be acknowledged by anyone that works there. Was I really just in Epping? It's safe to say I have a real Asian fetti...err... fancy when it comes to food. I'm guided by sesame and ginger like a bird to the weather. However, I had a hard time believing this was a late night stop in an Epping strip mall on a snowy night once I step foot inside. Firstly, the interior was immaculate and very comfortable. A rarity at ethnic places, as even though the food can be good in unexpected places you usually sacrifice being in a hovel. The servers were very quick and courteous. Maybe to a fault after the meal was served, it was late and during a blizzard so they had little else to attend to and tend to check in a lot... at least 3 of them. Our meals were fantastic, I stuck with reliable staples being a terriyaki plate and a gyoza app, which of course came with miso and a salad. All exceeded expectations. My wife got a few sushi items, one of which was the best of that particular one she's had anywhere. Might be dangerous with this place being so close to home.... my Gyoza was the best I've ever had, the wife even pilfered a few. Then came the bill... dimly lit I thought it said 50 something and put my card in the fold and thought "meh, standard". Upon signing I realized it was actually 20 something... what?! Now we have a definite problem as I work from home now and this place is 15 minutes away. Why not 5 stars? Room for improvement basically, the overly attentive staff post meal is a personal pet-peeve... and the menu doesn't lend itself well to dinner. I do clean the fish tank there, so I am partial to them, but I have eaten there a few times, and they really do have a friendly waitstaff and manager. The food is pretty good, sushi is awesome, and the prices are very reasonable. I go there for lunch a lot as I am passing through, and they got some killer lunch specials! I have not done the Hibachi, but form the looks of things, it is a fairly active and loud Hibachi, but not too much. Overall, great place! read more

We went here for dinner last night. We will never go back again. We sat on the outdoor patio, and our waitress, Joy, was lovely. Very sweet and provided great service. Our drinks were standard, and our edamame/ sushi apps were pretty standard. We decided to split a filet/scallop hibachi dinner. My boyfriend had the miso soup, I had the salad. Our meal was served swiftly. The service here wasn't the issue, the service was great. As the waitress passed the food by my head to place in the middle of the table, I got a whiff of a VERY strong "fish smell". I thought it was odd, but thought that maybe it was the scallops? Not that they should smell either. I was still eating my salad and my boyfriend took a bite of steak. He immediately froze and said this doesn't taste right. As he's chewing his first bite, I grabbed a piece of steak, smelled it(it smelled like death) and although the odor was extremely strong, I still thought maybe it was just the sauce and put it in my mouth. I IMMEDIATELY KNEW THE MEAT WAS RANCID. I promptly spit it out and grabbed my boyfriends beer and tried without luck to rinse the rotten meat taste out of my mouth. Neither of us could eat anything else after that. The waitress didn't seem to understand that the food was ROTTEN. She thought it was overcooked. They took that off the bill. When we walked in the place was packed, which I took as a good sign, though it was very loud, with a few middle aged adults acting like they were at a frat party. That was a little annoying. The service was okay, but not great. The waitress was hard to understand between the noise and her accent. She wasn't overly friendly and was rushed due to the crowd, which is understandable. The food was presented very well. The sushi was grood, though not among the best I've had. Everything else was lacking. 4 of us ordered different items and yet they all tasted pretty similar and somewhat bland. I'd like to try this place one more time during lunch when it's less crowded, and this time on the Hibachi side to see if that makes the difference. If you're looking for great sushi at a reasonable price this is the place. Tasteful contemporary decor. Great service. You have to try the 'Kume style Tuna Salsa' app it's very tasty, not surprisingly their signature dish. All the chef's special makis we got were first rate. This was our first visit so we haven't tried the teppanyaki side of the place yet. But we'll be back for sure!! If I had to come up with something that falls short it would have to be the plastic wrapped disposable hot towels. Kume is the 3rd Japanese Hibachi restaurant we've tried in the Southern NH and northern MA area. Easily the best. We started with the Kume mojitos, which included sake as well as Rum - nice variation and tasted great! The miso soup appetizer had a nice flavor, and the dressing on the salad appetizer had a really good flavor with just a hint of ginger. I took the (completely optional) Sake challenge in which the chef squirts Sake from a bottle into your mouth from several feet away while the table counted. I made it to ten before he chose to stop. Fried rice was really good, salmon was cooked expertly, and the scallops were tender as desired. My only confusion was that I ordered shrimp as part of the main meal, but only seemed to get the shrimp that everyone else automatically gets with a hibachi meal. All the hibachi tables were full, patrons were enjoying themselves, and we look forward to coming back soon! read more

This place is very good and I'm not even a fan of sushi. My son even enjoyed his meal here. My wife got the sushi and sashimi combination platter. It was extremely fresh and presented extremely well. I got one of the few steak dishes there and it was very tender and cooked exactly like I asked. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful. The overall ambience is very modern. The seating was comfortable and the lighting effects are very cool throughout the restaurant. Overall I would say definitely give this place a try it's very good high quality sushi at a very reasonable price. read more

We decided to try out this new restaurant on the spur of the moment -- when we walked in, they asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, of course, but that seemed to be fine and we were seated within about 10 minutes. I didn't see any signs of the disorganization the other reviewers mentioned. We had a nice meal which began with a clear soup, quite tasty, and a small tossed salad with an oddly sweet pink dressing on it (I passed on that). Our chef was entertaining although I don't think I was the best guest, since I really didn't want to catch broccoli in my mouth or have saki squirted into my mouth. My 10 year old daughter was horrified by the huge flame he created right at the beginning of the meal. I had a terrible experience at Kume. First of all, the food tasted horrible. Also, the service was terrible. Even worse, the management was the worst. Our chef did a bad job. He did hardly any of the fun things he was supposed to do with the food. Also, he never smiled, and his cold, abject attitude filled us with despair. He served the wrong food to the wrong people, and he didn't even cook things right. He did not accommodate our special needs (vegetarian, heart failure) and he didn't even seem to care. When we complained to the manager, he was uninterested in the terrible state of his employees, and he did not even give us a discount.
