Ricky's Thai in Hillsborough offers a cozy and very casual atmosphere with a large menu of cooked-to-order staples, ranging from traditional curries to specialized Thai entrées. My dining companion and I stopped in for a weekday dinner on our commute back from Princeton. Even without a reservation on a Thursday night, the hostess was able to seat us immediately. The menu is extensive, featuring all the standard curries (Green, Yellow, Red, Massaman, and Panang) and various special entrées that can be customized with your choice of protein--including duck and mixed seafood--and your preferred spice level. I had the Pad Phet Paa with vegetables and tofu ($17), sautéed with bamboo shoots, long beans, onions, bell peppers, lime leaves, and basil leaves, served with rice. It's described on the menu as being sautéed with a dry curry paste and no coconut milk, but seemed a bit more like a traditional curry (that is, more liquid) than I anticipated. My dining companion ordered the Pad Kra Pao with vegetables ($17), sautéed with onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, peppers and Thai basil leaves, served with rice. Our food was served very quickly and we both thought our dishes were decent and satisfied our craving for Thai, but the flavors didn't quite stand out as anything special. The biggest drawback is the parking lot. Because it is shared with a supermarket, an apartment building, and several other high-traffic takeout spots, finding a parking space during peak hours can be a real struggle. Be prepared to circle the lot for a few minutes before you find a spot. Overall, it's a decent and reliable option for freshly-prepared Thai food if you're already in the neighborhood, but probably not somewhere I'd go out of my way for again. read more

I really enjoy the food at Ricki's Thai Restaurant, which is why I've continued to come back. However, I've had an ongoing issue with takeout orders that needs to be addressed. On multiple occasions, when paying by credit card, a staff member at the register (not the owner) has automatically added a 28% tip to my bill without informing me. The first couple of times, I didn't notice until after I had already left. Since then, I've been more careful, and today it happened again--I had to ask for my order to be re-entered because the total was higher than expected for a $25 order. I understand that staff rely on tips, and I'm happy to tip--both for dine-in and takeout--but it should never be added without a customer's knowledge or consent. After experiencing this five or six times, it no longer feels like an oversight but rather a concerning practice. I hope management can address this issue. I would like to continue supporting this restaurant, but transparency and honesty in billing are essential. read more

I am so disgusted with Ricky's Thai in Hillsborough. I've been going to them for years, and earning points through their POS and payment system, Clover. I tried to order my free entree with them. First, over the phone, they said I need to do it on the website. That was impossible because there was no way to put my Clover points into their website. So then, I went to the restaurant directly to order. First, I was told the points expire. (No they don't.) Then I was told she didn't know how to use the system. Then, she told me I could get my appetizer free with points but not my entree. Then she said I could get another entree for free if I bought my original entree and appetizer. What I do know is that I was given the run-around, and in reality, she had no intention of giving me my free entree. What a scam! read more

Ambiance - traditional Thai decor frames the room - plenty of seating Service - Since I came with a group of 13 people we emailed the restaurant our order ahead of time. We listed each order with our names so it was easy for the waiter to bring out our food to us - staff member was friendly and funny! They made sure we had everything we needed Food - Pad Thai: medium spicy (3/5 chilies) w/ tofu: this was a pretty large lunch portion for me! Pad Thai sauce was perfectly sweet and spicy. I loved that the dish was packed with bean sprouts, eggs and peanuts. - Thai iced tea- refreshing and sweet! Balanced out the spicy pad Thai. I regularly order takeout from Ricky's. Just did so today and was very disappointed. Squid meals had just a few pieces of squid, and those few pieces were shriveled. Vegetables were sparingly added with mostly onions in the meals. Not the same quality that they used to serve. read more

Ordered the drunken noodle but im vegetarian so I requested that it have no chicken as described on the menu and could I get broccoli instead?- they said yes- but when I paid I noticed I was charged $2 - I might be able to let that slide (even though chicken costs more than broccoli) its a substitution but what I can't let slide is how they SAID NOTHING about the upcharge - $HADY and IT WASN'T EVEN GOOD I wont make that mistake again read more

Stopped by for takeout and this meal really hit the spot! I ordered the shrimp and chicken drunken noodles (level 3) and added baby corn. The noodles were thick and chewy, the shrimp were huge and the dish itself was really flavorful. Loved the spice. My wife ordered fried rice with chicken and added pineapple to it. This is the most flavorful fried rice we've had, and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Our order only took around 15 minutes to be ready which was great. We can't wait to stop by again! read more

This order was a takeout order. The online ordering was smooth and efficient. The wait time was 15-20 minutes and it was ready when picking up around that time. For an appetizer, the grilled shrimp and mango salad ($11.95) was ordered. It consisted of grilled and marinated shrimps on skewers served with shredded mango, papaya, cilantro, red bell peppers, and crushed peanuts with a Thai vinaigrette dressing. The shrimp was dry and just not good. The salad was overdressed but was decent besides that. I had the pra raam with chicken, spice level 3 ($13.95). It was with a spicy peanut curry sauce served over green vegetables. This was great value given all the food. My only complaint was the non-green vegetables present. There was baby corn and mushrooms, which was not mentioned in the description. It was not a huge deal for me as I like those, but at least mention that on the menu. The peanut sauce was tasty along with the chicken. I also tried the pad Thai with chicken. It contained fried Thai rice noodles with eggs, chopped peanuts, bean curd and sprouts. It was not the best. The noodles were hard, and the overall dish was just dry. Will I go back? Debatable. read more

We came here on the recommendation of someone and had great service and good food. Happy to see lots of interesting dishes and will have to come back again to try more. I loved the grilled shrimp and mango salad appetizer and enjoyed my noodle dish as well. My husband liked his stuffed chicken breast dish and the curry sauce was delicious. Next time he will ask for it spicier though! Came on a Wednesday at 7ish and had a few other tables but seemed like a slow night for eating in. Well, we tried Ricky's Thai today! It was decent. Luckily we were able to sit outside in their one table. They are definitely social distancing inside which makes me feel safe. Sitting outside, you're slightly forgotten - but that's fine! Less interactions. Everyone wears masks and gloves as appropriate. We had two noodle meals and chicken satay. The chicken satay was definitely nice and plump. Most times I try this, it's normally a flattened piece of chicken. But here, this was good. The chicken pad Thai was pretty good. If you like spice, definitely aim for spice level or 4 or higher. First time at new places, I always go safe with a 3. 3 was no spice at all in my opinion. Also had the drunken noodles. It was good. Came with both shrimp and chicken. That was good, but there was a shrimp tail stuck somewhere in my meal which wasn't what I was expecting to bite down on but, I spit it out, romantically, of course. TAKEOUT REVIEW With restaurants closed for dine-in meals, I drove to Ricky's Thai in Hillsborough, NJ, yesterday to enjoy a good Thai dinner with the family. I had eaten in its sister house in Skillman a few weeks before and loved the experience. Although homebound for most of the past two weeks in accordance with our Governor's directive, a solitary drive to pick up dinner to relieve us from another home cooked evening and quick dash to grab the neatly packed order, seemed a minimal risk for the great reward of a delicious supper together. So, I had earlier ordered everything online easily and paid with credit card in advance. There was no need to dally inside the empty dining room, and was in/out in under a minute without touching another human being, or even standing within 6 feet of one. It was amazingly anticeptic. I ordered Tom Kha Soup, Yellow Curry (Chicken), Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) and Pad See Eue (Broad Noodles with Soy based Sauce and Broccoli). This was more or less the same choices made at the other Ricky's. But, oh what a difference takeout makes on the enjoyment served by those dishes. They were just not the same; not as good. The two noodle dishes did not travel well. Each container suffered from congealed rice noodles that could not be separated when attempting to serve them into separate bowls. The texture had firmed to the extent that although still chewable, were on the far side of being pleasantly dense. The two sauces were by then weak facsimilies of what I had so thoroughly enjoyed last time. The wokked veggies were no longer crisp, having given up the ghost somewhere in route. Luckily, the Yellow Curry still showed signs of life and maintained its very nice creaminess and medium heat. It was the best of the bunch. The Tom Kha Soup revived upon a trip to the microwave, and was also fun with its cross of coconut milk and mild lemongrass infusion. Bottom line is that I will return here when they are free of Covid-19 constraints, because I already know how wonderful their kitchen is when their offerings can be consumed immediately upon serving. Depending on how long we are in the throws of Corona, I may order out again, but be sure to avoid the noodles. read more

I've ordered take out from Ricky's Thai twice now, and I really enjoyed the yellow curry with chicken (I remove the long beans and add baby corn). I've gotten it spicy level 3, which is a good spice level with the coconut milk to balance it out. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao and spicy level 3 for that was too spicy personally, I'd say spicy level 1 or 2 would be perfect for that. I also got the rotee pancake as an appetizer the last time, and I'm pretty sure that can never be messed up anywhere, it's always a solid appetizer. read more

I went there for lunch with my husband and I had the worst experience. The old lady at the front maybe she is host was so freaking rude . I told her table for 2she said we have 2 locations which I don't care so I am at this location. She said your friend maybe doesn't know . I told her my husband is parking. Then my husband mentioned about feeling cold and could turn off the fan .her reply was why you didn't put your jacket on. Anyway we got food , paid and tipped too based on the service. She made a big fuss about the tip. She even came after us .If you want good tip, you need to be polite and respectful. Ordered the pad see ew and the mango sticky rice to go. These are my go-to dishes at Thai restaurants. The pad see ew was definitely better than average. Perfect blend of sweetness and soy sauce. The mango sticky rice cake in a circular ball and the white sauce that came with it was very light. I prefer creamier sauces (like the consistency of condensed milk) but the consistency of this sauce was like half and half. Overall, would recommend this place. read more

We had heard great things about Ricky's Thai in Hillsborough and were eager to try the food there. When we arrived at 11:30 AM, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were the first customers of the day. Even though the physical size of the restaurant is on the smaller side, it doesn't feel cramped since the tables have been carefully arranged to give each party their own dining space. The food, however, left much to be desired. The flavor was medicore; lunch special portions were small, and our meal was overall not a great deal for the price. My son and I had ordered two dishes of Vegan Kao Pad, and were explicit in letting our server know that we both have severe food allergies. We asked if it would be possible for our food to be cooked separately and were assured that this would not be an issue. I was shocked to find chicken in my dish and beef in my son's but when this was brought to the attention of our waitress, she simply shrugged and said: "Oh. Sorry." before walking away. We weren't expecting a free meal, but at least offer to remake the dish so we can actually eat it! read more

When we first got around to order, the server was quite unapproachable and rude, which put a damp on our experience. The ambience is definitely meant for a business meeting or formal family dinner, so you must keep that into consideration. We ordered the pad thai, red curry with chicken, duck, and satae. All of these dishes exceeded my expectations! They were perfectly spiced with a huge depth of flavor. I felt beyond satisfied with my meal there, and given the large portion sizes, I was definitely stuffed!! Came here with a couple of friends on a rainy Saturday midday for lunch. As we walked in, the restaurant was pretty much empty except for us and one other table, so I wasn't expecting too much. The menu is pretty standard for a Thai restaurant; a selection of curries, noodles and rice dishes. Most of their main courses come with various protein options or there is also a vegetarian tofu option. There are also various levels of spice you can choose from. I went for a peanut curry dish with tofu and veggies and 3/5 spice. For appetizers, we got chicken satay and spring rolls to share. The food was superb and the portion sizes were pretty hefty. My curry dish was something new to me- quite sweet and not too spicy. For dessert, we shared the deep fried ice cream, which was delicious too. Took my friend for a birthday dinner and it was our first time there. Very comfortable, clean, formal dining experience so that's a plus compared to other Thai restaurants that are not that clean. We started off with Thai ice tea and chicken satae. Have to say the chicken was moist and not dry. The peanut sauce on the side was too sweet for my taste as I love spicy food. We both got chicken pad Thai but mine had extra veggies in it as requested. However i thought they could have added more veggies especially since they were charging me more for that add on. It had too much tofu bits in it but overall one of the better pad Thai I tried. Not too sweet either and I got #3 spicy but could have gone to 4 easily. Haven't been to this place in some time, but definitely would recommend a few things I've had here: 1. Takeout curry: whenever I got the takeout curry from this place, the portions have always been generous. (See photos from other reviewers.) For this restaurant, I actually prefer their curry-based dishes over their other noodle dishes (i.e. pad thai) 2. Duck avocado green curry: got it for the lunch special, and would get it again! (Haven't seen this dish at any other Thai restaurant I've been to.) 3. Curry noodles ("laksa"): my cousin, whose dad is from Malaysia/SE Asia, said the laksa at this place is legit. He has pretty high standards for laksa, and we both agreed the soup for the laksa was really flavorful. My only critique: the food is saltier than I would personally prefer, though overall, still well-balanced in flavors. Prices are reasonable too! read more

I come here all the time given I work down the road. They are always friendly and the food is always ready quickly. It's a cute little establishment, they are however a little pricey if you don't catch the lunch prices which are "smaller" portions they say but still fill you up fine.
