My friend highly recommended this place so I decided to try it the next time I came to Chinatown. It's located upstairs in new Chinatown so I've never even noticed the place since I've never felt adventurous enough to wander up there. It is ALWAYS crowded whenever I come here and it's hard to find a table. They have a few games that you can play while you are sipping on your drink. The menu is small, but Kung Fu Tea is good if you enjoy actual tea flavored drinks. I shared a green tea milk tea with the bf and I wish I had ordered my own afterwards. You can customize your drink based on sweetness and amount of ice or just order it hot instead. Warning: don't come here if you're looking for a fruit flavored bubble tea because you'll probably be disappointed. Best boba outside the Los Angeles area! Ever since moving to the east coast, I have yet to discover good boba. When I visited my friend in Chicago, she brought me here to Kung Fu Tea, and oh my. Finally good boba. The actual tapioca balls are perfect- just the right amount of chewiness with the right amount of sweetness. And the milk tea was so smooth and perfect. My Chinese friend brought me here for after dinner tea: I was hesitant until I saw that you could choose your sugar levels, since I was pretty full. Pretty crowded with nowhere to sit given the hordes of younger kids socializing and drinking their shaken products. At this time of night, a wait seems required, but it was lively. As a white guy it was all new to me: I tried the matcha tea with jelly on top, the jelly came easily through the huge straw and the matcha had a nice bittersweet taste, it was cool and refreshing. This place reminds me of an old boba place growing up. I think it was called the Boba Bar Cafe? It was near Haines Elementary. But it's basically the same concept. Boba drinks, free games and a chill atmosphere. The only thing that has changed is the higher prices and perhaps the quality of the drink. I ordered a green tea red bean slush. Seemed to taste pretty good until I couldn't break up the drink to reach the bottom. Why couldn't I break it up? I had three ice cubes in my way. So much for calling it a slush... Well, this is clearly the place to be on a Sunday afternoon in Chinatown. Big line, but it whittled down efficiently. The address is a bit misleading because it's still (seemingly?) part of the China Place strip. But it is on the other side of the square with the zodiac animals; go up the staircase in the pagoda-shaped tower and you're there! You can get tea (hot or cold), slushes, drinks with boba or jelly or mung beans, and maybe coffee drinks (but they were out the day we were there??) It's REALLY nice that you can control the amount of sugar, ice etc. they use. The young man gets migraines from sugar, so being able to have the option of "little sugar" (30%) was great. His pineapple smoothie with little sugar was like slightly augmented fruit, just lovely. I got the taro slush with pearls, half sugar, but somehow my order got hung up; his was done and they kept calling the numbers beyond us at the pickup counter, until I finally asked, "Did something happen?" The barista didn't hurry to solve it, but I did eventually get my drink. I do have to say that they came up with the perfect matrix of sweetness in the "half sugar" solution. On a week-end the place was full of loud young people, and there's not a lot of room to stay and drink if you wanted to. Kung Fu milk tea with boba: This was okay. The only reason I didn't really enjoy it that much was because it's very milky, while I wanted more of the black tea flavor than the milky flavor; this is just a personal preference. The boba was cooked well and was sweetened, which not every place does. I really like that this place lets you specify what you want in your drink (bubble, jelly, or something else), how much ice you want (I got little ice), and how sweet you want it (I got 30%, little sugar). KFT serves up solid bubble tea and a fun place to hang, complete with comfy chairs, board games, and bathrooms. The snack foods also look good but I've never tried them myself. They have a good variety of boba but I'm very sad to say they don't have my favorite tea: jasmine. The tapioca pearls here are always sweet (as they should be) but I find their consistency to be...inconsistent. I understand that having the perfect texture at all times is not an easy feat, but the tapioca often tastes like it's been soaking for too long and hence not as chewy as it should be. I used to come here much more often back when it was really the only bubble tea in Chinatown, however as new shops have opened up and changed the game it seems Kung Fu Tea has stayed stagnant because they know they have a customer base and it's a big brand chain, therefore they really have no incentive to improve on any aspect (such as being able to take credit cards?!). I'd say that the quality of the tea itself is average so the main selling point for me would have to be the tables/seating if you manage to get lucky. It should also be noted that they don't take the KFT app here so you won't be able to pay from your app account or earn bubbles/points here. On my past visit they completely forgot my order (I heard their realization over the counter) until everyone that ordered after me got their drinks and they had saw me awkwardly still waiting. I had specifically came to KFT for the mini bubbles which I read on Yelp that they might have early in the day so I purposely asked the cashier TWICE to make sure if they have mini boba: they said they did. However when my drink came out it was the regular-sized boba. When I asked them about it up front the manager said they don't do mini bubbles. It normally wouldn't be a big deal to me but it was frustrating because I had specially asked twice to make sure that they knew what I was talking about. I'd say they need to make communication more clear between the staff and management based on this experience alone. If I had known from the start mini bubbles weren't available, I would have taken my business to Chatime, Hello Jasmine, or EliteTea instead since their teas are fresher (KFT uses milk powder and you can taste the difference if you try the others) and the turnaround time for your order is also quicker. All three of those also have seating to chat with your friends so I'd recommend them if you're not feeling KFT! Overall I didn't really mind KFT much but after that experience I'll definitely be sticking to supporting the smaller local businesses in CT for my milk tea needs! read more

This place is run by the cheapest ******* in existence. Out of all the Kung Fu Teas I've visited across the US, this is hands down the worst one. Objectively, it is a terrible bubble tea joint. Let's begin. Kung Fu Tea has one job: to sell you tea, usually with bubbles. Let's assume bubble tea only, for the sake of this review. In the past two years, I have never gotten the same drink twice. It's a miracle of random order. They should study this establishment because they've cracked the code of randomness. I order the same drink every time, EVERY TIME, and it's never been the same twice. Sometimes it's too sweet. Sometimes it has too much ice. Sometimes it's the wrong tea, or the wrong size, or maybe it doesn't have bubbles. If they can screw it up, they do. Period. And this isn't true for me. It's true for anyone I bring with me. In fact, it's become a running joke. We try to guess how many things they'll get wrong with our tea. I even double check each and every order against my receipt number to make sure. I even ask them to read the drink order. The problem is in how they prepare your drink: purely random. But the worst offense: In order to save money (I guess), if you order a large tea, you only get one scoop of bubbles. I'll repeat. If you get a LARGE tea, as in 20 ounces of tea, you will get ONE ******* scoop of bubbles (the same amount that you would get in a small tea). I have even raised this issue with the manager and she responded that yes, the large tea comes with one scoop. No, it doesn't. Not in Boston. Not in LA. Not in New York. Not in Vegas. Nowhere else. This spinster charlatan of a store manager tried to convince me that it's supposed to have one scoop. Do you know how ridiculous 20 bubbles look in a 20 ounce drink? Just imagine a tall pint of iced tea, and then roughly two centimeters of bubbles at the bottom. Don't come here. Ever. Try any of the other worthwhile places. In fact, I will pay you not to go here. Kung Fu is a fast, reliable, and consistent place to get tea. The person taking your order at the cash register is typically no-nonsense and brisk, but it's because the place is always very busy. However, they put out orders super fast and you can usually be in and out within five minutes! There are plenty of drink options to choose from, but not so much that you're overwhelmed. I really like that you can customize your sugar and ice levels and add bubbles, grass jelly, etc. The ability to customize sugar amount is a necessity here, as their default level is too sweet. However, their bubbles are so good! They're always soft and chewy, especially if you get a hot tea instead of a cold one because the heat keeps them from stiffening. My go-to is a hot oolong milk tea with bubbles and 75% sugar :) There are a few drawbacks to this place: it's cash only, add-on's cost 50 cents, hot teas come in size large only. Also, the place is noisy because of their machines and the young crowd, and seating is limited. DO NOT come here to study. Kung Fu Tea is yet another boba option in Chicago's Chinatown. They are a large chain and are powder-based as far as I know. Despite this, KFT has a fond place in my heart since it was one of the first and more popular boba shops in Chinatown before the many new ones that just opened. KFT is not a bad option for boba if you are unwilling to pay for close to $6/$7 for boba at other establishments. KFT is actually in my top three out of all the options available in Chinatown. I recommend the Kung Fu Milk Tea, Oolong Milk Tea or the Almond Milk Tea. Unfortunately, this location does not take credit card, so come prepared. However, they will accept Venmo, which I find convenient and also entertaining. Growing up in the 626 (boba central), I spent a good amount of time in boba shops either studying, hanging out with friends, or just grabbing a drink. I also visit Taiwan at least once a year and we all know that boba in Taiwan is amazing. On top of that, I worked at a boba shop while I was in high school. So consider me a boba aficionado. I ordered a Kung Fu Milk Tea with Boba. Half sugar and light ice is the only way to go! As I stood by the bar watching my bartender make my drink she pretty much dropped the shaker onto the floor, picked it back up and used it to make my drink... Disgusting. I said something so they apologized... blah blah. My drink is ready and as I prepared to take a sip of it and be transported back to the 626, I just sighed. Don't get me wrong, the milk tea was quite delicious. Super rich and creamy, sweetness just the way I like it and chilled with just the right amount of ice cubes. The biggest disappointment for me was the boba. The boba was absolutely terrible. It was hard, tasteless and just BAD. A lot of the times when I go for a drink I seek milk tea but I want that chewy, sweet, delicious boba to pair perfectly along with me tea. It seemed to be busy when we got there but we didn't have to wait long for our order. It is family friendly and clean. I got a medium Signature Coffee Slush with herbal jelly and my boyfriend got a large Matcha Red Bean Slush with herbal jelly. Both were delicious. I would rate them higher but they ran out of boba so I opted for the herbal jelly instead. It was an OK alternative, but how do you run out of boba at a BUBBLE TEA place??
