I have to warn everyone. I made an online order- when my son went to pick up our order it was given away to someone from DoorDash? They said the "girl" had a picture of my receipt and name. We do not do DoorDash and don't know who this person is. Worried that whatever website the online order goes through has your receipt, name and order. Unless - that's a BS story and they should check with a photo id. So possibly it's their screw up and giving me an excuse that it was the Door Dash fault. But boy did they give me the hardest time for their fault. Not trustworthy- disappointed! We even told them to call the cops to make a report since they said they have cameras - they don't want to - now does that sound fishy! Been meaning to review my favorite Chinese restaurant on the Westside for awhile! Why is it our favorite? Not only does Kunia Chinese serve local Hawaii and Americanized Chinese favorites like gaugee and local chow fun, but my Chinese American husband says this spot serves authentic Chinese food! A couple of our Chinese American friends also love this place and have taken their Chinese parents visiting from the mainland! It's hard to come here often with just hubby and me most of the time. As everyone probably knows, Chinese food is meant to be shared among families. The few times we've dined in, we've ordered fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, ong choy with garlic, and their famous fried flounder. As a San Diegan, I had to try the salt and pepper chicken wings, which are pretty good. We'd love to try their soup and cake noodle varieties one day, but we just enjoy ordering rice! Our food was cold which was a little disappointing. The orange chicken was bland. The lunch plate was the biggest disappointment. The sweet and sour spareribs tasted like ketchup, and the noodles tasted like corn starch slurry. The roast duck was pretty good and the cold ginger chicken is usually hard to get wrong so that was good. My kids enjoyed the general Tso's chicken as well. Kunia Chinese restaurant is our family favorite. Especially when it comes to potlucks. Last week, I was voluntold that thanksgiving is at my place. Thank goodness I asked as I needed to find a place fast that has thanksgiving package because I don't cook this type of meals. I looked up a few places and then I remembered the few thanksgivings we've been her to pickup dish's for potluck that Kunia has such packages. I mean a whole rack full of cooked turkeys waiting for people to pickup. And so the next day, my sister and I headed to the restaurant for lunch and to put in our order. We ordered package A at $179 includes the turkey, noodles and crispy gau gee. Sounds expensive but best to be safe than have a ruined bird in this specially family holiday. The food is god here. Our family favorite is the steamed ginger fish and the salt and pepper fish filet. During peak dining hours this place does get busy both for dine-in and take out. The staff, super friendly. And for us, the price is right. Plenty of parking. Although there are several Chinese restaurants nearby, we don't mind taking a short drive to Kunia Chinese Restaurant. 5-stars for me and my family. read more

My favorite Chinese restaurant on the west side. Excellent food and service. The restaurant is bright and clean. The honey walnut shrimp are HUGE. My wife and I eat it all the time from various places but the first thing I noticed about them was the size. Most places, I can eat them in one bite. First time here and we were satisfied. The Fish, Duck, and Egg Fu Yung were very tasty. A little disappointed.ted with the spicy Eggplant though. They brought us the wrong dish and when we got "the right one", looked like the tried to use the original dish and just touch it up for the right dish. It just didn't taste right. Up date on our experience with Kunia Chinese Restaurant is our choice place to go in our neck of the woods including Ewa, Kapolei, Ko Olina , and Waipahu. We are so happy we discovered it and we have not been disappointed with their service or foods. We try to order something different every time we go and our recommendations include their salt and pepper shrimps, beef chow fun, pork and egg plant, beef broccoli with cake noodles (too little cake noodles), and their duck dishes are absolute winners. Service has always been very courteous, speedy, attentive but not pushy. Service has always been professional and caring about their customers. As for ambiance, well lighted, comfortable and clean chairs and tables, comfortable place to dine in, clean and well kept interior and exterior. We have learned that we should not sit in down wind of their very powerful AC unit, the draft cools off the food sooner than you wish. Recommend sitting under the AC or away from the draft. My sister and brother-in-law really like this restaurant and brings home tasty food from here every so often. I went on my own to order takeout after an appointment and got the half Peking duck with buns and steamed fish fillet with ginger onion. Both dishes were so fresh, light, and tasty! They also were not too oily or salty, and I didn't feel bloated or sluggish after which can sometimes happen depending on the preparation of the dishes. I also think the ginger from the fish helped relieve an upset stomach I've been having for a few days, and the ginger wasn't too strong tasting or overpowering. Such good dishes and I enjoyed them very much :) It was easy to order over the phone and they have a good online menu to reference, and the wait wasn't too long even during lunch time. The staff was nice and we had a casual conversation, and the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere. Kunia Chinese Restaurant is really not a big restaurant, but the restaurant is clean, brightly lit, and much nicer looking than the conventional hole-in-da-wall Chinese restaurants. Upon getting seated, I decided to order a fixed pre-set meal that consisted of the following - 1. Abalone Pork Vegetable Soup 2. Roast Duck 3. Shrimp & Broccoli Stir-Fry 4. Orange Chicken 5. Mongolian Beef 6. Minute Chicken Cake Noodles 7. Steamed Rice I also decided to order a Steamed Fish dish, as my dad loves fish. What can I say about da Chinese grub? I used to order food from here a long time ago when I lived about a mile from here. We had an errand in Waipahu so dropped by to order a take out and bring it home but decided to dine in. We wanted to order 3 choices we never tried here before so we got the Honey Walnut Shrimp, Minute Chicken and Beef Chow Fun (Gravy Style). The food served was very tasty and thought the portion for each entree was generous. We would definitely order these again! This restaurant is clean and spacious, there's lots of parking and the workers are so nice and friendly. All of the dishes were quite disappointing! This was once our favorite Chinese restaurant, especially since it's just a 5-minute drive away, but that's no longer the case; the food has declined in quality. The last few times we've ordered, it was quite bad. The orange chicken was tough and dry (overcooked nasty chicken breast), the egg blossom soup was tasteless (just water and cornstarch), and the spicy garlic eggplant tofu was subpar, lacking any garlic or spice flavor; the tofu was nasty spongy and chewy, the worst I've ever had. By chop suey house, I'm referencing cornstarch thickened, brown, watered down chicken stock goo surrounding wok stir fried beef, pork, chicken or mixed seafood with snow peas, onions, canned mushrooms or bite sized bits of red braised pork belly kau yuk, else glistening, yellow lemon sauce coating batter coated fried chicken. Sadly the food here is not old school and oddly, not even what you'd expect to find in an Americanized Chinese eatery. 1. Oyster sauce chicken: Extremely salty oven roasted chicken, cut up in gigantic pieces and covered with even saltier thickened, watered down imitation oyster sauce concoction. Inedible. 2. Kau Yuk - Dry with no fat. Thick cut pieces of pork shoulder, not pork belly are under braised. Chewy and stringy. Bizarre seasoning that somehow makes it taste better with Heinz ketchup. 3. Beef with snow peas - Tough beef but otherwise, a generous portion of properly snow peas. OK seasoning but no wok hei. Only passable dish of the three sampled. On a positive note, easy online ordering and each takeout container well wrapped in cling film to prevent leakage. Maybe I ordered the wrong things? This place is amazing. It's so clean and well kept. You can tell everyone that works there takes pride in the restaurant. It truly is a wonderful family run restaurant. The food is wonderful and they give good portion sizes! Even if you are only getting take-out the service is exceptional. While you sit and wait they will ask you if you want water. I'm sorry but this level of customer service is a dying art. Something as simple as this speaks volumes as to a place and how they value their customers. Hubby and I craving for Chinese and came here. We shared the dinner plate and is disappointed. It was like no feeling to the food. Everything on the plate was luke warm to room temperature. I have been to a bunch of Chinese restaurants around the island, but hands down this is the best one on the west side of the island. I have only ordered from them through door dash. My hopes weren't that high until our order got delivered, I had gotten the honey walnut shrimp - House fried rice - Egg soup with pork hash - chicken corn soup - crispy gau gee and you have to get the Kau Yuk (pot roast pork) The prices on doordash were not that bad and the portion sizes were pretty good on the app that whole order cost me $90, which I think was worth it cause it was also leftovers for the next 2 days haha. The restaurant wrapped up the food so nicely and secured especially for drivers that pick up, their attention to detail is appreciated and I'm sure they provide good service just by the way they prepare and pack the food. We decided to try this place again. We ordered takeout instead of dining in. We were greeted immediately after walking in and was asked if we made a takeout order. I told the employee no and she said she would be right with me and walked in the back. Another employee ended up taking my order which was fine as they were very busy. A party also came in and decided not to dine there because they didn't have reservations and the restaurant did not have a table available right away. We were told our order would take 20-25 minutes, which was fine. We ordered at 7:10pm and our order was done at 7:35pm, 25 minutes on the dot. We ordered two take out plates. 1. Egg Fuyong over Fried Rice: (The egg fuyong was delicious and had a good balance between the egg and veggies. The fried rice was plain. It was just tossed with some egg and very little peas.) 2. Roast Duck and Char Sui over Steamed Rice: (The roast Duck was good and tasty. It was not dry, which was a plus. All but 2 pieces of the char sui were very dry and seemed old. Not good at all and I couldn't eat it. I was a bit disappointed it and also that I paid $3 for extra veggies which was under the duck and pork but didn't seem as though there was extra. The veggies were not much.) There is a good amount of tables inside for dining. The restaurant is well lit with chandelier lighting. This visit was better than our previous visit and debating if I should try it again and just not order the items that I didn't like. Other food items must be good as many eat there. It was Mother's Day and we're just driving around not knowing where to eat for lunch and our stomach took us here on a whim. For a party of 5, waited for about 15 min. We were lucky there was a table, it was pretty packed inside and busy. We ordered: beef broccoli cake noodles, crispy chicken, seafood fried rice, and salt pepper shrimps. Wanted to try other dishes too but they were out of roast duck and chicken wings at the time. The little kiddies devoured the salt pepper shrimps.
