I stopped by for take out this afternoon around 330 pm. The restaurant was empty and the floor was being mopped, which I don't think I've ever seen happen in a Chinese restaurant. Their menus are printed on paper and reused, which is noticeable because of the worn paper and stains. I asked if I could still order a "lunch" plate and the waitress said I could. I added an order of crispy gau gee. My food was ready in about 15 minutes, everything came out hot. The food container had gravy on the outside and the paper bag for the gau gee was very oily, but it was contained in a separate bag, so that wasn't a problem. Their food didn't really have a much flavor as I was hoping for. The crispy won ton had barely any filling. The spare ribs had mostly bones and fat, the kau yuk was tough, and the noodles were decent. The gau gee was okay, not great or horrible. For the price, there are better options. I really wanted to like Salt Lake Chinese Restaurant, but it's been a major letdown. The food is pretty mediocre overall, and most dishes come out on the saltier side. What's even more upsetting is that the prices keep increasing while the portion sizes seem to get smaller each time. On my most recent visit, I ordered the Bittermelon with Pork and was charged $21. For that price, I could've easily gotten two two-choice plates from Panda Express. At this point, I'd only recommend this place as a last option for Chinese food. read more

After we had our hair done it was close to lunch time so I decided to go next door and have Chinese food. I ordered soft wonton mein and my husband ordered soft gau gee mein. It was ok. The dish came out hot. I had 5 won tons and my husband had 4 gau gee. Lol.. I have eaten other places where the soup and noodles were better. But It was right next door and besides we had 1 more stop to go before we go home. We had a family dinner here on a Sunday night. I've never been here before and my uncle suggested it. We got here around 5pm and it wasn't too busy. We got sat right away. The prices are on par with most of the Chinese restaurants on the island. The food was good and authentic. The workers spoke Chinese. We ordered entrees to share. My son ordered the oxtail soup $24.95 for himself. Everyone else shared the seafood tofu fish maw soup $19.95. We got the scallops with mixed veggies $22.95, salted fish and chicken fried rice $16.95, general tso chicken $15.95, pepper salt shrimp $17.95, fish fillet steamed with ginger onion $17.95 and stuffed duck $18.95. While the food was good, no dish really stood out. The fried rice had wok hei and the pepper salt shrimp had great flavor. I mostly ate that. This has slowly become a really good Chinese restaurant that can rival Wah Kung. I think they hired a new cook or something because they have dim sum and other things that they never had before. In addition, their vegetable fried rice is killer and not only that, their other dishes are really tasty. I mean, I don't want to ruin the "good Chinese 3.5 star" but this place has come a long way. It's close to me and always provides good Chinese food that is easily as good as any other place now. I like it and I have gone many times since my last review. read more

Stopped by Salt Lake Chinese Restaurant. Saw they served a limited dim sum menu every day and wanted to check it out. We were greeted immediately and seated. We were given ice water and hot tea while looking at the menu. We ordered the siu mai which would take 20 minutes so we also ordered gon lo mein, walnut shrimp and capital pork chops to tide us over while the siu mai was steamed. It was pretty empty in the restaurant since it was only around 10:30am, but the place had preset plates with napkins and forks on every table indicating it probably gets pretty busy. As neighborhood Chinese restaurant, it has quite a few military family customers as mil. housing is just across Salt Lake Blvd. We asked for chopsticks. All the dishes came out fairly quick and were all delicious. The Shrimp was plump and not overcooked, the pork chops were flavorful and extra crispy, and the noodles were also flavored well, although we prefer thinner egg noodles (mein) than what they serve. The noodles had both a good portion of char siu and chicken along with vegetables. We were hungry and got full on these dishes so by the time the siu mai arrived steaming hot, we decided to home after sampling one of the 6 pieces in the order. It was a fairly large piece so we split it in half to cool it off. It was juicy and the filling was fairly bouncy with some large pieces of pork. It was hard to get the full flavor because it was so hot, but we later tried it at home and it was good but a bit too salty for our taste. This place has been around for decades and more importantly when you place a phone order, the lady with the strong accent keeps saying "and then, and then, and then", IYKYK, this might be a winner. Comparing apples with apples, the "dinner plate": -- Kau yuk - Glistening, bright red. Made from pork belly with the right amount of fat. Nam yue (fermented bean curd) used. Good star anise flavor. Old school for sure. -- Sweet sour spare ribs - Meaty. Just sweet. Could use more vinegar for balance. -- House fried rice - Very oily but well seasoned and has wok hei. Lemon chicken - Pass. Chunks of chicken coated in a heavy batter, deep fried, tossed in a very sour, artificial tasting lemon sauce. At least it's highlighter yellow. Mu shu pork - Surprisingly good. Big chunks of tender, Chinese wine marinated pork, mushrooms, cabbage stir fried with good wok hei. Roll your own with the provided hoisin sauce in house made wrappers. Good eats. Inexpensive. Dishes average $15. Three percent service fee for all credit cards. Debit cards not accepted. Salt Lane Chinese restaurant is located at the ASalt Lake shopping center inbetween Longs Drugs and Safeway. One of my coworkers ordered a $40 pan of their beef chow funn for a work lunch potluck and it was really good. Not many restaurants use the freshly made chow funn noodles but they have that here. It was a hit and the noodles went out really quickly! A good place to go if you need a quick pot luck dish or pan. read more

I used to go to this place all the time when I was in high school. I was first introduced to this restaurant on a date lol and I have nothing bad to say about it til this day. It's typical Chinese restaurant with round tables and the lazy Susan but there's also smaller tables for smaller parties. I can't recall the last time I gave a 2-star rating, and because I know how this can negatively affect any business, I do my best to carefully examine my reason(s). Located in the Salt Lake Shopping Center, this restaurant is in walking distance from our residence. Plenty of parking, but during the lunch hour it can get a little crazy with customers shopping at other shops that might normally be closed in the evening. On the recommendation from friends, we decided to try it out. A group of us went in for a midweek dinner and a couple of tables were already occupied. We were quickly seated and decided to order family style choosing about 4 main dishes a couple of sides. Service was good, but the entrees came out one a time with varying time gaps in-between. I would have preferred to have all the entrees available to me so I could sample them on my plate at the same time instead of finishing one entree and then having to wait for the next one to come out. Another faux pas was the server forgot about our rice until we reminded her, so we didn't get that until nearly the end of our meal. After dinner, my wife and I discussed our experience and we both agreed that the dishes seemed to taste the same. Nothing stood out and they seemed under seasoned. I found the beef in the beef broccoli to be tough to chew, and the kung pao chicken was light on chicken. I did enjoy the hot tea. The restaurant seemed to be busier with takeout orders than eat-in customers. Perhaps that's where they shine. Service through Uber Eats is terrible. We have ordered Crispy Gau Gee Mein on three separate times. On each visit we have only received the Crispy Gau Gee! No noodles! The first time I went through Uber Eats and through a LENGTHY process I was reimbursed! The second time they could not assist me. The third time it happened, my sister in law ordered through Uber Eats and guess what?? No noodles! She was very upset and called them and all they could say was for her to come and they would fix the problem. Well as in my case, I used Uber Eats for the convenience so I would not have to go out and get the order as did my sister in law! This also happened before using Uber Eats as I picked up a large order in person and notice the package was not as big as usual. Come to find out upon inspecting it before leaving, you guessed it no noodles! I confronted them and they proceeded to tell me I did not order it. And I showed them my receipt and it showed what it should have been! They continued to speak to each other in Chinese which I don't normally have a problem with but this time they were so rude to me and condescending. We have ordered through them for years and they do have great food. Their service is terrible. My sister in law ended up going back to get the right order and she asked if there was anything they could do to make up for it and they offered soup ...begrudgingly. The whole idea of Uber Eats is the convenience. We don't even mind the delivery or tip charge. But it CLEARLY stated on the order, CRISPY GAU GEE MEIN! We both are beginning to think they are TARGETING our address . So from this time forward, we will order from Waimalu Chop Suey. Further away but they get the order RIGHT! read more

I last ate food from this location almost a decade ago and very surprised that quality is drastically underwhelming. Six adults each selected an entree and chose take out. All entrees were ready for pick up at given time. This was the nearest Chinese restaurant to family home. Oyster Sauce Chicken Chow Mein: Chicken tasted dry even with bones intact and oyster sauce. Consistency of chow mein tasted fine. I regret choosing this dish for us to share. Deep Fried Shrimp w/ Pineapples: I was surprised that no one noticed pineapples were missing. Sauce for the shrimp was on the runny side and tasted lighter. Cutting corners on ingredients. I'm used to having a thicker red sauce to pour over fried shrimp. First and consecutive bites clearly revealed batter tasted plain, thick, and shrimp size was smaller. Disappointed. Sweet and Sour Pork: Missing green bell peppers. Replaced with orange bell peppers which changed the taste of sauce. Fried pork was on par. Not enjoyable. Kau Yuk: Pieces were tender and well marinated. My husband enjoyed it. This time was carb less. That's ok. If I had my way, prefer 1:1 ratio of kau yuk with steamed bun. Shrimp with Honey Glazed Walnuts: Shrimp cooked to perfection. Barely tasted honey. Shrimp chip topping didn't do justice to bring out flavors. Beef w/ Sour Cabbage: Beef was super tender and easy to chew. Way more cabbage than beef. Deliciousness of the beef went well with taste and texture of sour cabbage. I enjoyed the taste of this entree. Hot mustard with soy sauce: Non existent. Dipping sauce tasted like a mixture of shoyu and vinegar. I suggested we order in Aiea area for next Chinese New Year family dinner. Two other adults agreed. read more

I always return for take out orders of my dad's favorite- Minute Chicken Cake Noodle. It's a large & tasty serving for $19 and some change. Photo is minus a bowlful that I gave my dad and there's still all that left. The restaurant is conveniently located at Salt Lake shopping center between Safeway & Longs. The shrimp wasn't actually fried like other Chinese restaurants. I would pass on the char siu fried rice. It was really bland. I would also pass on the orange chicken.
