We watched The Peking Acrobats here. Love when universities bring the arts to the local community. Pretty much all of the seats are good for viewing except the ones all the way in the front. Most folks are probably driving here, but for anyone taking public transportation, note that it's quite a ways away from any nearby subway station. The theater itself looks like all the other entertainment centers attached to college campuses, and this one is no different, being part of Queens College. It's stately looking but inside is rather dated. I came here to watch a live show with Ira Glass, one of the OG podcasters. The show itself was good, but as a superfan who has seen a lot of his work it was dull to see a lot of his old hit an no new material. No fault of the theater itself, but the seating wasn't ideal. The theater is large, with old auditorium chairs that remind me of my elementary school and a tiny stage upfront without good acoustics. It's fine for local artists but I doubt you'd want to see anything large scale here. read more

Todays review is for Colden Auditorium. I'd been here before for a school graduation ceremony but today visit is for attending a musical show. It is not hard to locate the place. It is elevated and nobody could miss seeing it from the street. There are two parking lots available for visitors and there is available street parking as well. The auditorium is huge. It has plenty of seats and has good stage view wherever you are seated. Sound is good. Entry in and out were made easy by the friendly staff. Rest rooms are conveniently close to the auditorium entrance. read more

3.5 Stars I've been to the Colden Auditorium several times for graduation ceremonies, concerts and ethnic shows. On this occasion, my family and I went to see the New Shanghai Circus. The show itself was pretty good, not great, but pretty good. Entry and exit to/from the theater was made easy by the efficient, friendly staff. The seating staff, however, seemed over-whelmed by the crowds (even though the theater was half empty). There is a concession stand which I didn't visit but there are also some vending machines (snacks & beverages), which had pretty reasonable prices! Also, I MUST mention the restrooms; specifically the toilet paper situation (see photo), which, I have to admit, made me LAUGH. The toilet paper is tied by a string and hung over the coat hook inside the stall. Do you know how long your arms needs to be in order to read the toilet paper? (Best to plan ahead, if you know what I mean). Come on, Kupferberg Center, you can do better...a lot better. I have faith in you! Not my fav venue, but I would still come if there was a show that interests me. Tips: Parkng: There is a parking lot ($10 parking fee) but if you get there a little early, there is plenty of street parking. Box Office: Buy your tickets at the box office to avoid those ridiculous ticketing fees. read more

Took my father in law here to see a performance here. We encountered two problems. One, it's not very handicapped accessible. It's a long trek with a walker and cane. When you get to your seat, you have to find an usher to check the walker. Problem two, There were kids seated in front of us that wanted to stand on their chairs. Made it impossible to see in front of us, no ushers to help us out and resolve this issue. We asked politely but no change. It was too difficult to move my father in law to another seat and row. Consequently, my father in law complained that he was often lost in the show because of this problem. It's too bad since we paid good money for these seats, and my father in law has been a very active patron of the arts and contributor to his community. read more

Nice place for an event. I went to see Take 6 and took the bus which let off right in front of the building. There were some concessions and the ushers were plentiful. I don't think there is a bad seat in the auditorium and the seats are very comfortable. Definitely wouldn't mind seeing another event here considering I'm not a local. read more

I came here one Saturday evening for a performance by the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe. If you are not familiar with this performance group, it is a performance group made up entirely of performers with disabilities, and it is famous for doing the "Thousand Hand Bodhisattva Dance", which is performed by dancers who are all deaf. You can see the dance on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24SoPihLdq4. But anyway, this review is not about the performance troupe. This review is on the Colden Center. The size of the auditorium, including seating and the stage, is obviously designed for local performances. It's great for that purpose, but doesn't always do the job when it is trying to accommodate a group such as the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe, which has performed at the closing ceremoney of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But this is not the reason for my 2-star rating. Apparently the performance troupe was selling tickets via a local NY Chinese American company which may have even been set up for the purpose of selling tickets for this performance. They were selling tickets online and at certain businesses in the Chinese neighbourhoods. If you bought tickets online, you could mention your name and pick up the tickets at the event. Or you could also buy tickets when you arrived at the event, like I did. I don't know what kind of deal they had with the Colden Center, but apparently, if you bought tickets at the event itself, you had to buy via the ticketing office for the Colden Center instead of the ticket table that this Chinese company had set up in front of the auditorium. I assumed if you bought tickets this way, all the revenue will go directly to the Colden Center and the Chinese company would have no share in it whatsoever. I had no idea about this and asked a Chinese lady at the ticket table if I was to give my money to her for a ticket. She took my money and while she was about to give me a ticket, a manager that works for the Colden Center came on over and basically yelled at her as if she was a child for having taken my money. She was scary. I almost wanted to tell her to calm down, she was so angry. She ended this talking-down-to by telling a security guard to watch the Chinese lady and kick her out if she took money again. Whether or not the Chinese lady knew she was doing wrong, at that point, was irrelevant to me. This manager for the Colden Center was supposedly a professional and she lost her professionalism by the way she talked down to somebody working for a business partner. read more

I came to the Colden Auditorium for a concert with the fam on a Saturday night (yes, I'm THAT cool). Doors were to open at 8p but we went in at 8:20p. It was rainy and cold so this was a big deal. None of the staff had the WiFi password for guests to use, and when I went to the front of the stage to sing along with the singer LIKE A NORMAL CONCERT GOER, security threatened to arrest me. When I acted like I didn't speak English and continued singing along, I could see the smoke coming out of his ears. This auditorium made me so thankful for the Skirball Center's auditorium. read more

This small simple theatre is a step above a high school auditorium. The seats are comfy and sound system adequate. Parking here is not easy with tiny lots that fill quickly. Arrive early use the lots or plan in parking in the street 3 blocks away. read more

5 stars for the Billy Cosby performance, 3 stars for the venue. My first experience was driving right through the gates of Queens College, only to be stopped and sent to another guard who gave me the most roundabout directions to essentially make a U-turn and drive around the block (but instead drove two miles and ten minutes out of the way to reach the same parking lot). Parking is sparse, so arrive early to secure a spot in the lot directly across from the theatre. I was lucky and nabbed one, but I saw people walking quite a ways after the show. Colden Auditorium itself looks like a larger high school venue and I was unimpressed by the facilities. This was especially disappointing after seeing the beautifully modern facade and lobby. It was worth it, though, to see wonderful programming and a comedic legend. I'd be back for the big names, but I won't come back for anything else. read more

I really enjoyed this simple theatre Its just perfect. Plus you get free parking come on people you are so lucky to have that amenity. The seats are comfy and i'm a big guy, I recommend an aisle seat. read more

They advertised a concert on Ticketmaster... for a group my 8-year old loves- bought tickets,, got her excited for the whole week anticipating her first concert, only to be turned away at the door... a policy of no children under 12 that WAS NOT STATED anywhere on Ticketmaster nor on the tickets I received. The box office manager- stated he would reimburse me for my daughter's ticket but not mine- I asked if I should go put her in the car and come back in to use my ticket?!!!!!! Would only reimnburse one ticket which makes no sense. Their mistake. Came back out only to watch several people approach with their children and also be turned away. CLEARLY the fault of the venue or whomever set up to sell the tix through Ticketmaster. Waiting for a call back from Ticketmaster as well as filing the claim with Amex. Screw you box office 'manager'. I had to ask if if what he was saying was ok with his conscience. Who runs operations like these? read more

The return ticket policy is absolutely absurd. If you have an issue with a performance you can't make, you can kiss your money goodbye. I called them, not for a refund, but asking to use the value of tickets for another performance in their series (I can't make Kathy Griffin - so this was recent) and after three phone calls of sitting and waiting for 10-minutes on hold, I got a big no. I even asked to speak to a manager and was told they were consistently 'unavailable'. They did suggest (the box office personnel) to sell (aka scalp) the tickets outside the venue to get my money back on the night of the performance. The whole point of customer service is customer retention - and their policy isn't client centric - it's in the interest of the college. Their policy is a joke and needs to be revisited. If not, you're going to lose my patronage - and the sad part is, they could care less. read more

First of all I would like to say that the Bobby Vinton performance was excellent on 03/16/14. Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra was fantastic. My 2 star review is not for the music, I rate that 5 stars, It is for the venue itself. I paid for front row seats, however the seats were on the left side of the front row, making it very difficult to see the entire performance, because of sound equipment in the way blocking my view and my wifes view and my fathers view who will turn 91 in april and was looking foward to this event. He was very dissapointed that he could not see the entire orch. because of the equipment in the way. Had I have known this I would have picked different seats, even if they were a little back further, so as to be able to see the entire performance. My father thinks that he should get his money back, however that will not happen. Also when you exit the venue, there is a very annoying person who constantly tries to verbally push people out of the venue, by saying "Hope you had a nice time, have a nice evening". Now when you are waiting for your ride, as I was, why should have to wait out in the cold, and or rain or snow, just because they want the theather cleared in order to clean up. I hav ebeen to other theathers and have not experienced this crazy phenominom . A patron should at least be able to wait in the foyur where it is more warmer and less wet, while waiting for there ride. The first time I was there it was snowing, and we were told that we had to wait outside. When we said it was snowing, we were told that there was a gas staition down the block and that we could wait there. I don;t think it is right and should be addressed for future shows. I myself am a singer and should probably hook up with an act or something here so that I could make sure that my fans dont have to wait out in the cold. You see the entertainer is the one that brings money into the venue by his fans seeing him or her, so that makes that person sort of in control of the situation within reason of course. Without the performers, there are no customers, hence there are shows, which means no business for the venue. I will however be coming back for future shows that captures my interest, nuff said. read more
