I was doing my weekly food shopping tour of northern New Jersey and wanted a cool ethnic dessert. Found Kurly Kurtosh on Yelp and was excited to try an authentic dessert from where my grandmother's relatives were from. I showed up a bit too early on a Saturday after a nearby lunch, keep in mind they open at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. I was not about to miss out, so I read in my car for a half hour before being "that customer" that's waiting when the door opens. The two women working took my early arrival completely in stride and were impressively professional throughout my time there. They were engaging and once they heard I was a first time customer, gave me a rundown of the menu and their process. The shop is impeccably clean, modern, and features comfortable seating. I went with an original chimney cake and it was made fresh. I selected a drizzle of their store made dulce de leche and after a brief wait, it was ready. I really enjoyed the chimney cake, crispy exterior and a tender interior. Just sweet enough. If you answer no, you get a whole rundown on what their product is -- Chimney cakes, Kurly Kones (my favorite), all of it. It feels very interactive, like it's almost elevated from, "You're here to get food" to "you're here for an experience." I brought my sister here once when she was in town and she told me it was the best ice cream she'd ever had. It is extremely good. The service is done with heart and I've never ordered here and not had my ice cream come in a freshly baked cone. There's always a conversation a good snack. They make you feel like family when you're there and I've gone several times now for that alone. You won't find many places that are as thorough about getting to know their customers as Kurly is. I've passed by this shop for years and finally decided to pop in on a hot Saturday evening for a treat, but it definitely didn't live up to the social media hype. When I walked in, the music was so loud I could barely hear the girl at the counter talk, so ordering was mostly just guessing. I was also pretty surprised to see only four ice cream flavors available for a spot like this. From their videos, I assumed the chimney cake would be baked fresh in front of me as part of the whole experience. Instead, they just grabbed a cone that was already sitting out on the counter. The drizzle I asked for barely made it onto the pastry, and the cake itself really suffered from sitting out. It was odd eating the frozen Lindt truffle. Finally, instead of being light and fresh, it was heavy and chewy, leaving a layer of fat coating my tongue. There was no "experience" to it--it was the exact same transaction as walking into any standard ice cream shop, just with pre-baked dough and less of a selection of ice cream flavors and toppings. read more

Very inviting, one of a kind, dessert shop. Having never heard of a kurtosh (chimney cake) before, I wasn't sure what to expect. The staff walks you through the ordering process, explaining what a kurtosh is, how it's made and how it's best served. Each kurtosh can be served as a 'Kurly Kone' with the ice cream inside it or, warm with the ice cream on the side. Served warm with the ice cream on the side is the traditional way of eating it we were told so, that's what we opted for. Neither the kurtosh or ice cream was overly sweet so if you're not big on sweet tasting things, this is right up your alley. The ice cream flavors are limited and change so periodically. The drizzle is just the right amount, not too much & not too little. LOVED my experience here!! We stopped one day since its near my sisters house and it was better than expected! The chimney cakes were a way better vessel for ice cream than a regular wafer or waffle cone. And I love how customizable they are. Kurly Kürtősh takes is a wonderful dessert spot that brings this wonderful Hungarian dessert to you right here in Nutley. The inside of the spot is nice and the staff is so nice and explain everything so well if you are a first timer. You have the choice of eating it more of the traditional route vs as an ice cream cone... luckily it was me and my wife so we got one of each. I tried the original as an ice cream cone. The dough was so tasty, subtly sweet and enhanced by the ice cream. And I loved the touch of adding a little chocolate truffle on the bottom to prevent the ice cream from spilling out of the bottom. For the traditional route we had the cinnamon sugar with the maple syrup sauce and it was also really goods maybe a little on the sweeter side. We had the oreo cone with milk chocolate, rocky road ice cream, edible glitter with dulce de leche on top! We also got to sample their sparklade. I love this business. If I'm being honest, I was introduced to it through Yelp, but I keep coming back because of how fantastic they are. If you have never been here before and you have never been exposed to Kurtosh before, the owner happily greets you when you walk in and explains it to you. It is a Hungarian pastry called a chimney cake, and let me tell you, you MUST try this. As a first timer, the owner will guide you through your choices and what your options are. I have never once not loved any creation I have had made for me, and yes, I call them creations because each one of these desserts is a work of art and the way that the flavors blend as you're eating only tops what they look like. I first visited the Kurly Kürtősh Café as part of Yelp event and I loved it. I recently had an opportunity to return and I'm happy to say it's still excellent. If you're like me, you probably never heard of Kürtősh before. It's a traditional Hungarian street pastry also known as chimney cake. It's a spiral of caramelized dough, that's crispy and a bit flaky with soft inner walls. It's like puff pastry and a pretzel had a baby. They're rolled by hand on wooden cone-shaped molds that are attached to metal rods and baked quickly in a special oven that's right on the counter. The warm Kürtősh are then rolled in a variety of sweet coatings. There's Kurly Classic Glaze. Think of a glazed donut, but not sticky. They also offer Oreo, Cinnamon and Edible Glitter. This time I tried their Madagascar Vanilla Bean ice cream, which is one of their permanent flavors. They also offer two weekly varieties which change periodically. With your Kürtősh and ice cream chosen, you then get your choice of either a dark or milk chocolate Lindt Lindor Truffle that they wedge in the bottom of the cone. The ice cream is then drizzled with Nutella and dusted with colorful sprinkles. This may sound like it's too much "stuff", but for some reason it really isn't. It all comes together in a perfect harmony of flavors and textures that's actually easy to eat. The café is in a residential area, and not near any other stores. You'll drive right past it if you're not actually looking for it. There's a small parking lot, but it's a bit tight. Fortunately, there's plenty of street parking. The cafe is bright and clean. There are five tables inside, which seem to free up quickly. This isn't something to be eaten in your car. The employees are full of enthusiasm and meticulous in making each cone. I first encountered it when visiting Transylvania (a heavily Hungarian populated region of Romania from where this dessert originates), so when my husband, who's Hungarian, came across this place, I knew we had to go! The shop offers both the traditional form either plain (glazed) or variously dressed with cinnamon sugar, ground walnuts, coconut, crushed Oreo, and other toppings including limited-edition seasonal specials, with spread/dip if you like. Or as an ice cream cone. We were going for the original which we missed from the ol' homeland, but I gotta say I loved the ice cream version! The presentation of the kürtőskalács is somewhat adapted for modern consumers (a trend also prevalent in Europe), but the owner, who lived in Hungary, makes it as authentic as possible, and uses specially imported flour and traditional spit roasting tools. You can even watch them make it! We ordered a few rolls to take home - ask for the "Hungarian version," not listed on the menu - which is a full roll that's longer (2 for $20). It's made fresh so there's a wait if they're sold out, but you can order ahead online to avoid the wait. The sparkling lemonade we tried is to also delicious, as is the apple-pear juice from Poland. The staff and owner are warm and lovely, enthusiastically greeting us and explaining the menu. The cafe's decor is chic and contemporary with a clean and bright aesthetic and spacious seating. From the thoughtfully tailored menu, to the design, to the effort put into making the food, you can really discern their care, attention, and dedication toward creating a high-quality customer experience.
