For decades I've driven past Kurver Kreme on Central Avenue in Colonie without stopping. It's always peaked my interest but I always made excuses. On a diet. In a hurry. Always something. The other night, the weather was warm. My friend and I were out for a drive. We pulled into Kurver Kreme. What a nice experience! The stand is well lit. There were dozens of vehicles in the large parking lot. It looked like a tailgate. Some customers were sitting in the back of their hatchbacks taking in the scene and enjoying the warm weather. There were no lines. Many customers were just hanging out after finishing their ice creams. Some were lost in conversation. Others were busy "people watching" as a wide variety of vehicles continued to pull into the parking lot. The stand looks to be mid-century and appropriately old R&B music and 60s Rock classics blared from the speaker system. Most of the ice cream is soft serve. I ordered a small chocolate in a cup. It was good. My friend ordered a pomegranate and mango Dole whip twist, which is sort of like sherbet. It was both pretty and tasty. Elaina was our server. She was friendly and helpful. my gosh, been about oh 35 years since I've been here, 3 stars. i enjoy a tasty softserve, they certainly delivered there. they also had a few non traditional (AKA vanilla/chocolate) flavors to mix together, i think there was rootbeer sherbet and some blue cotton candy maybe, idk, i went purest (van) but also added some chocolate mint sprinkles. major letdown with the sprinkles, they werent soft and were kinda chalky, now i know. service was quick, line was disjointed, so prepare for that on your typical summer evening, but noon in april, not so much. also 5 bucks for a small cone, which is kinda pricey in my gluttonous opinion. is it stopping me from going back? nahhhh, but i would seek out alternatives if i really wanted, but when i want soft serve, its certainly an option. coney read more

Same great soft serve even after a decade! The vanilla soft serve dipped in chocolate is still my absolute favorite. The kiddie size cones are a great way to indulge but there's nothing wrong with getting the large. Coming back here with friends have been enjoyable as we reminisce the past as well as make new memories. I love that Kurver Kreme now updates their weekly flavors during the season on their social media so you can see what flavors are available and which ones can be swirled! Besides their creamy soft serve, they've got frozen yogurt options as well as some hot dogs, nachos, fresh squeezed lemonades, thick milkshakes, and Dole whip in different flavors. The variety is great and service is also phenomenal. As far as sundaes go, they also too it off very generously. My go-to sundaes include the Strawberry Shortcake and the PB Zinger, both decadent choices. Whether you're in the mood to grab a solo cone, or devour a whole sundae with your bests, Kurver is the answer. Their building and parking lot remain exactly the same as I remember it though businesses all around it have changed. It's been a couple of years since I have come here and my expectations have changed. My wife wanted soft serve, which this place seems to focus on, so I scanned the list of twist combinations (chocolate/vanilla, lime/watermelon, raspberry/coconut, chocolate/rootbeer) and sellted on the raspberry/coconut. Prices were reasonable and I really enjoyed the raspberry. Unfortunately, after a few bites the coconut ice cream reminded me more of coconut shampoo (my wife said tanning lotion) and that had to be due to the artificial chemicals added for smell. A local seasonal favorite for soft ice cream! So many varieties and they now take credit cards. There is always a line here. I got a chocolate vanilla twist with the chocolate dip. Oh yum. Another person had the vanilla and watermelon twist and she said it was so good. If you like lukewarm ice cream, this is the place for you. My husband, step daughter, and I had a bad day and we thought Ice cream would help end things on a better note. I tasted the cappuccino and salted caramel twist and it was lame, so I went with what my husband always gets - vanilla soft serve with hot fudge and nuts. My step daughter got the same thing. We wanted a kiddy cup, but due to the hot fudge, they could only put it in a larger cup. We sat down with these big cups of ice cream and almost immediately started wondering if we were eating whipped cream. I just seriously have to kick myself multiple times, for finally having tried this the first time since moving to Albany 6 years ago. I mean, I drive by it nearly every day, or at least 4 times a week, and always just ignore it. I heard how it was the creamiest, the best old fashion taste, taste that is out of this world, and can't find it anywhere else, but still avoided it. I think part of the reason is the the long lines I would always see whenever I had a desire to go and try it out. After a while, I just ignored it, until I saw some of the reviews and posts. I checked them out online and on Yelp and had to try it. It reminded me of the the tasty freeze we had in Detroit growing up. The tasty freeze was great, but I never remember it being anything other than just ice cream. It was probably months, before I finally was driving home from shopping on a Friday evening of all things, and noticed maybe four or five people in line. It was a cool summer evening, around 75F, much cooler than recent days, so I thought, why not. I checked my phone and it was 8:30pm. Closing time was 9:00pm. So, when the light turned green, I proceeded straight into the parking lot instead of home. As I walked up to the stand the merriment from all the customers sitting around picnic tables and benches filled the air. Young teens in their baseball uniforms ran ahead to get in line. I felt like I had gone back in time to those Tasty Freeze days. I watched on older gentleman enjoying a large sundae, while his partner enjoyed a cone swirl. I saw others with the famous banana split and the young baseball teens ordering dipped swirls. After viewing all the Yelp photos, I knew what I wanted, especially since the line was now starting to fill behind me, and many anxious Kurver Kreme aficionados were anxiously waiting to place their order. I asked for all the swirl flavors, and the young man proceeded politely to tell me all of them. I heard a lot of berry flavors and non-fat, and in order to expedite my process, I simply ordered the vanilla, real deal, all the fat, none of that non-fat stuff, and dip it in that crunchy chocolate dip. I've been craving that ever since seeing the multiple photos on Yelp, and it reminded me of the swirl chocolate dips we always got at the Tasty Freeze years ago. He asked what size, and I said, "The biggest of course!", and with a pleasant smile he turned and created the gigantic, mountainous swirl of ice cream on that little tiny cone, and dipped it in that fantastic chocolate crispy sauce! Then what he said next surprised me and froze me for a moment. He said $4.30 please. "Are you kidding me," I thought as I dropped a $5 bill down. I stared at him and he stared at me, only for me to realize he was holding my ice cream and waiting for me to grab it so he could take the five and give me my change. I laughed, grabbed the ice cream, told him to keep the change and threw another dollar in the tip jar. He and Kurver deserved it. Now the best part. I find my little bench off to the side staring at the gas station and people still pulling in minutes before closing to get a taste of joy. I first must take my picture for Yelp, but in doing so, the tower is so high and the frozen chocolate starts to crack and tilt. In desperation I take the quickest photo and proceed to tackle the top of the crispy chocolate vanilla cream tower. Using the term heaven is not fair. Not even close. I've been all around the world, and have tasted from famous Gelato shops in Rome, Mochi ice cream stands in Tokyo, the unusual taste of Dondurma in Turkey, the sweet Halva of Israel, the unusual South Korean J-Cone, Thailand's peculiar I Tim Pad, and can't forget the Paletas in Mexico. I love ice cream in all its forms and have tried it all over the world. But this one was something to remember. I tried to bite into it and get a taste of ice or bubbles that you get with others, to ensure myself this was just another ice cream outing, but nothing was to be found. It was shear and utter creamy smoothness, lick after lick, bite after bite, suck after suck... Uhm, sorry didn't mean to get too graphic here. The worst part was not eating fast enough where the frozen crispy chocolate shell was breaking in pieces and falling off. This was ice cream utopia beyond all my worldly travels, and it was right in my backyard. Shame on you Frank for waiting so long. I only wish I had the chance to meet the man that made this place the icon it is in Upstate New York, and thank him. For it is truly a summer sweet treat paradise. I've been going to Kurver for many years. It was always a tradition to bring my daughters during the summer while they were growing up. My oldest daughter flew in from Florida yesterday. We picked her up from the airport. Just like old times we wanted ice cream on a very sunny day, so we stopped to have some Kurver before we even went home. I ordered 3 Sundae's totaled at $26.00, pulled out $30 and I said to keep the change for the tip. We want to sit out there and eat ice cream. I went to dive into my Hot fudge brownie sundae, could barely get the plastic spoon in it. I'm literally using strength to scoop..first scoop all I taste is whip cream. I want to taste the ice cream and the brownie. The brownie of course is on the bottom and I could barely dig into it. I've been eating the hot fudge brownie sundae for years without an issue. So I got frustrated and decided it wasn't working. I did not eat it..I had only been away from the cashier for 5 minutes if that. I go back and explained I wasn't pleased with the hot fudge brownie sundae and I would like to get something else instead. No apology given just a very "whatever" look was given. I decided to order a cone, attitude being given on what kind of cone. I said chocolate. Now, I'm upset and I ask for a manager. I get in a very defensive manner. I AM THE MANAGER. I asked for her name and in a cocky way she said "ALLIE". I graciously said ok. She told me that is $4.79 for the ice cream. I paid her. That was the worst customer service experience ever..coming from a customer service manager myself for the past 30 years. Everyone has a reason for saying something is the best. To some, the best soft serve is defined by a product that defies the elements, and is slow to melt. To others, it's a price to value ratio where large portions can be had without spending a lot of money. And what you'll hear a lot when you ask, is a generic notion of creaminess. Not being from around these parts, I've tried a lot of soft serve, looking for the very best. And what I prize above all else are flavor and texture. Creaminess is challenging to write about because all soft serve is creamy. Part of me wonders how others define creaminess. Is it defined by a lack of iciness? Because sometimes in soft serve there are minute ice crystals blended up into the swirl. But I've noticed these fine crystals even at places ballyhooed for their creamy soft serve. I like to define texture by a soft serve's density. For me, the denser the better. Some soft serve can be like whipped cream, but that's rare. Other soft serve can come closer to a thick shaving cream. However, my favorite is when it takes a little effort to sink my spoon into the swirl. That said, I do not think that Kurver Kreme has the best soft serve in the Capital Region. However, it is my local seasonal soft serve shop, and over the years I have discovered the things that are good. Get the orange-vanilla swirl. Either that, or really anything with their delicious hot fudge. Because the hot fudge itself is excellent, and it will melt down the soft serve which improves its texture. Plus since the hot fudge is so good, you won't notice the flavor of the soft serve. Over the past ten years I've come to recognize Kurver Kreme as a gem of a place. It's one that I hope will continue to serve generations of Albanians for years to come. Its opening is a harbinger of spring, and seeing long lines at its windows makes me smile. Like almost everything else in the Capital Region, you just have to approach the place knowing what to get. This isn't ice cream. It's soft serve. And let me start this off that I am a Colonie girl, born and raised and after LKens was gone, this was where we got ice cream. I feel it, local pride, nostalgia. so yes, those add to my 4 stars. Otherwise, I LOVE their soft serve. I will admit I am a very simple (and particular) girl when it comes to ice cream shops. I like soft serve vanilla, in a cone, rainbow sprinkles, flipped into a cup and extra sprinkles. Weird? Simple? Exactly the way I love it and no I don't need to try a sundae. Seasonal ice cream stands are the only place I can order it this way, and i only get a few a year. Maybe since I love their vanilla, simple is the way to go here. Kurver was cash only until last year I think, and even when they didn't take cards there is an ATM near by. Prices are cheap for cones, milkshakes can get expensive. My boyfriend loves getting their MONSTER milkshakes which basically looks like a half gallon in a cup. Long lines at Kurver are the norm, and that means, summers coming! Anyone who gives this less than 5 stars has poor taste, just being honest. I can't believe that I have never even reviewed this, as Kurver is literally something I live and die for. I cry when it closes for the season, and religiously stalk the opening date- it's that good. First, let me start by asking.. Who else can boast such delicious homemade cones? They also come in bowl shape, which only helps their cause. Secondly, the ice cream is so whipped it's almost not even cold it's like eating a big pile of whipped cream. Not too dense either. Now onto the flavors... I'm literally obsessed with pistachio so much that when the week is over I order to go pints to put in my freezer. While there are many delicious flavors once you find your favorite you will be hooked too. The portions are perfect and the toppings are equally delectable, especially the hot fudge. Lastly, the staff is super friendly and they work their butts off during the months they're open. The lines move fast so you aren't waiting days either. I like many other ice cream places so I'm not saying this is impossible, however nothing compares to Kurver and it's overall deliciousness. I grew up about 10 miles from here, so I would often frequent other ice cream establishments, but I would usually come here a few times a season. I currently live in South Florida where we sadly seem to lack these types of mom and pop ice cream shops. This place usually has long lines in the summer, but I do remember them moving. Today I opted for a small twist ice cream cone. Most of the time I will order a kiddie cone when getting ice cream since I have some dairy intolerance issues, but I thought the small was quite tiny for $3. I had been at Martha's in Lake George just last week and the kiddie size was probably comparable to a large at Kurver and I almost threw part of it away. I noticed you could order an ice cream sandwich with cookies from Schuyler Bakery, that looked appealing, but I didn't partake in it. I like that Schuyler has a peanut free bakery since I do have allergies myself. I still found the ice cream here to be creamy enough, that's what I remember from past visits. Spoke to his daughter and told him we miss him and were glad the business was still in the family. Second 2021 ice Cream Stop. Three stars is a solid ice cream rating. I haven't been to kurver Kream in years. I'm so happy to have added it to my second 2021 personal ice cream trail. I like my soft serve creamier than Kurver's but theirs was good just a bit more on the icy side. We had the orange swirl and the raspberry swirl. But small cones were turned with perfection. The flavors were true to the description. I liked the orange better but the raspberry was good too. They priced the cones fairly for what you got and the server was very nice. Although she should be more aware that with central Ave traffic, a glass window and a mask she should speak up. Definitely worth stopping and enjoying. read more

How this place gets 5 stars I don't know! I came here for the first time recently and really wanted to like it after reading all the great reviews for it and seeing the huge lines when I would drive by. But in my own opinion it isn't a 5 star spot.. sorry. If you like soft serve or huge portions this is the place for you. I however am not into mammoth sundaes. I actually haven't had a sundae since I was single digits old, but seeing Kurver Kreme didn't have a lot of ice cream options I went with one of their 2-3 dozen sundae options available. I chose a basic hot fudge sundae. Least I thought that's what I chose. It came in big or huge.. I forget the name "pappy" or "big pappy", something like that. I asked for vanilla ice cream. I meant traditional ice cream, not soft serve. But that's what I got. Along with peanut butter sauce, which I didn't know came on hot fudge sundaes. I don't really care for peanut butter and the toppings here are overdone so it was hard to avoid it. The lady asked if I wanted nuts and whipped cream. I said fine, I wish she'd asked about the peanut butter. In addition to the peanut butter, there was a ridiculous amount of whipped cream and chocolate sauce. This thing seriously had to be close to, if not more then 2,000 calories! I'm not on a diet but I do like to keep things in moderation. They should offer something less heavy/huge. I wasn't thrilled with it. Too hard to maneuver around the toppings to get to the average soft serve vanilla ice cream and I didn't want to eat just toppings. I tossed it after three bites. My daughter who is a peanut butter fiend got a peanut butter sundae and as I got up to throw mine away she asked if she could toss hers as well. She said it tasted like they just melted Skippy for the sauce and that the ice cream wasn't creamy enough. I initially wanted a scoop of watermelon sherbet and a scoop of "no no" orange pineapple but they couldn't put them both in the same bowl. I guess the orange pineapple was soft serve. Figures. Frustrated and not wanting to hold up the line I chose a sundae. They also gave my daughter her peanut butter sauce on the side. Why, I don't know. If you like your ice-cream simple, like soft serve, huge sundaes with tons of toppings or shakes/flurries, then this is your spot. If you want a more flavorful option, or flavor options in general that don't require a lot of dressing up, you might feel the way I do about this place and put it on your "pass" list. This place makes me want to move to Albany. I love ice cream. I particularly love ice cream stands. And Kurver is great. It rivals the place I have very fond childhood memories of in Jersey. When I visited Albany, I came here several times. The one thing they have that got me was their peanut butter sauce. I love Friendly's PB sauce and have never been able to find something similar and delicious. Upon my first bite of Kurver's PB sauce, I knew I was in love. It is absolutely delicious. The ice cream itself is pretty delicious and they seem to have a wide variety of flavors. They have sundaes and all sorts of other delicious toppings. I think I saw someone eating some food here, but I have no knowledge if they serve anything besides ice cream. For those who have not been here - they only take cash, they close at 10 pm, there is no indoor seating, and there always seems to be a line. Don't let any of that stop you - find an ATM, come before 10, enjoy the ice cream on a warm day, and be patient. It's all worth it. Beware if you're a pedestrian in this parking lot around 9:30 though - cars will be flying in to make sure they get their Kurver fix before they close. Kurver Kreme, this may be my simplest review yet! Who can say no to ice cream, let alone creamy and delicious ice cream? On a warm or hot summer day, don't be surprised to find a large line outside of Kurver's, and don't even think of letting that line persuade you to drive away! They sell some of my favorite ice cream treats that are far above the Dairy Queen standards! Their cost vs value is spot on, with far larger sizes than at slather shops. The small cup of vanilla I ordered is easily what you would get as a large at Dairy Queen. THE GOOD: * Delicious Creamy Ice Cream THE BAD: * The location isn't the best. One of the great things about being an adult is the ability to have ice cream for dinner. I've taken advantage of that luxury a few too many times at Kurver Kreme, and man, it almost makes the wrinkles of adulthood worth it! Kurver Kreme is the best option I have found for soft serve that is less than 30 minutes from my home (see Martha's Dandee Creme for those willing to take a longer trek). It's creamy, smooth, and does not leave a chemical aftertaste on the tongue. The absolute best option at Kurver is its many and frequently rotating flavors of the week, specifically their soft serve sherbert (I think it is spelled as sherbet, but I'll go with sherbert because that's the way I say it and this is my review, after all) and that it can frequently be swirled with vanilla. Want a better-tasting version of the school cafeteria, freezer-burned creamsicles of your childhood? Orange sherbert with vanilla swirl is your answer. Plenty of nostalgic deliciousness in that one! Love key lime pie and wish you could have it in ice cream form? Get the lime sherbert swirl! The only time I've ever been sad at Kurver is when I have driven to Kurver thinking that it opened at noon, and find myself sitting alone in the empty parking lot because I had forgotten it does not open until 1:00 pm. Bring your jeggings here because the portions are huge! We ordered the regular size with a vanilla/chocolate twist topped with chocolate sprinkles, peanut butter sauce and marshmallow. It was quite heavenly but I thought the toppings distracted from the ice cream itself such that I was having a little buyers remorse. We did get a sampling of the root beer sherbert. Wow, now I am coming back for that! There was a bit of a line out front but it moved really fast and we were up to bat before we knew it.
