Every time, and I really mean every time, I come to NY I make sure I set aside time to visit this cart. It's conveniently located around Times Square, cheap, quick, and DELICIOUS. The last time I was here, I brought my BF to try it out. He enjoyed it so much that we had to come back for seconds the next day (luckily so because or flight got delayed 4 hours so we were able to have a quick dinner). Wow, wow, wow. I just had the chicken and lamb dinner. The flavors and quality of the meat are the star here. If that's what you want: insanely good flavor, then this is the place. I found the portion size perfect for my dinner. For the crowd that favors 16oz steaks and half-chickens it might seem undersized. For me, I'm glad it wasn't any bigger - I already am plenty full but it was so good I would have kept on eating and eating and... I could have hurt myself! Best Halal Food truck in the city. Food is well prepared and so fresh. The lamb and chicken is cooked just right and the cottage cheese and rice with salad mix makes this meal complete. Working in Times Sqaure, I was always been told about the Kwik Meal Cart. I have to say it was a disappointing experience considering the hype and the price. I had been to the Khan's Street Cart just diagonally opposite to Kwik cart a couple of times and found it better taste and cost wise. Ignoring the fact that its around $3 costly, it didn't had the halal food favor which I had expected. The quantity is also on lower side compared to the Khan's. It has a diff taste compared to other street carts and one might tend to like it if they are not looking for something on spicier side, but even if ignoring the spice factor the meat didn't taste so great. Based on the assumption that the food "chicken over rice" is the standard to judge each food cart, their chicken is less greasy, the rice tastes good, and decently priced($6). Yelp says 5 stars is 'as good as it gets'. Well for carts, this IS as good as it gets. The chicken over rice is extremely good...the lamb over rice that much better. The rice is just as it should be...the sauce is on point and the chicken and lamb are freshly grilled to order. Halal Guys is good drunk food and the portions are huge, granted, but the food is just blah without dousing it in their (albeit good) white sauce. Here all the food actually is good! No reason to cover up or hide anything. The sauce brings out the flavors...not hides it. See the difference. Anyway the owner, Mohammed Rahman, used to work at the Russian Tearoom and knows exactly what he's doing. I hardly see him manning the cart anymore but the guys there are always super friendly and whip up my lunch quickly. I've tried everything to ween myself of off this delicious street meat vendor--all to no avail. By Thursday, I get the shakes and if I make it to Friday without indulging at least once that week, I'm on line by 11:30. This isn't the cheapest street meat you'll ever eat, but it might be the most addicting. The lamb is top notch, but the chicken and falafel are pretty good too. The fish looks great, but I haven't strayed from my go-to chicken and lamb over rice combo to give it a shot. The only thing preventing a five-star review is that I'm always left craving more as soon I put down my plastic fork. The portions could be bigger, a la the vendor on 46th. The meat from this cart (at least the lamb & chicken) is probably the best one out of all the carts I've tasted (yes even better than 53rd/6th). They serve actual real lamb. Also since it's not as famous, the wait usually isn't longer than 10 minutes. Not to mention, it's also open during the day. Too good to be true? That's because I haven't mentioned that the lamb & chicken combo is EIGHT dollars for a much smaller portion (see pictures and you'll know what I mean). This is probably the least food I've ever gotten from halal cart for that price (even carts that charge 5 dollars will give you more food!) So if you're feeling hungry, you're low on cash and you're craving to be filled up, this is clearly the wrong place to go. Sauce is also nothing to write home about. This place isn't for big appetites or skinny wallets, but if you want a more "gourmet" feel than the usual halal fare, then check this place out. read more

Not as good as it once was. Once upon a time this was the go-to street food cart in nyc, but over the years they have raised their prices and lowered their quality and quantity. On a good day, it's still one of the best falafels in nyc. On a not so good day, chicken and rice will actually be 1/2 chicken and 1/2 inedible, gamey lamb over a thin bed of rice and a bit of salad squished into a corner of a huge plastic box. They say, What's in the name? Kwik Meal Cart isn't exactly named for Manhattan Domination. I'd have never bothered to stop if it wasn't the picture of Bobby Flay. "Yes they won a Vendy award many years ago, but what about consistency" I thought. Would they still be any good? Shouldn't I walk another street to Biryani Cart, the place my friends swear by? So what if their biryani with tzatziki sauce (Duh! Didn't you know that?) isn't my absolute fav? Oh no, I need to catch a matinee show and I am already running late. The long queue at Biryani cart would surely kill my afternoon. Kwik Meal Cart? Really? There was no queue and the guy seemed to be waiting for me to order. Ok, why not? Two Chicken Kathi Rolls and a Chicken Kabob over rice. (Before you judge, it's a party of three) "Medium or Spicy?" Glad someone asked me what I like. "Medium plz." I am scared of the spicy sauce bottles on such carts. Who knows how many scovilles are in that bottle. I wasn't even done reading the great praise Bobby attributed to Muhammad (at this point I realized I should have ordered lamb. Bobby loved his lamb. I love lamb. Damn!), my kathi roll was ready. Quick! Sweet.. First impression, I couldn't help comparing it to Biryani Cart. Roll is served burrito style, wrapped in an aluminum foil, which makes it a little difficult to eat. Plus, it's only one roll so if you are quite hungry this might not be it. (Unlike Biryani cart where they serve it in a box, and they serve two rolls. I don't recall the price though.) It's delicious!. My friend found it somewhat subdued in flavor, asked for their spicy sauce and was bold over. That green thing in bottle is one heck of a sauce. So far I'm ok with my decision to stop. Chicken kabob over rice. Wow! Very well seasoned and grilled. Yes it's grilled and deep red and spicy ad delicious, not white and bland like other carts. Amazed at the quality of rice. Distinct grains of rice perfectly cooked and seasoned. I'd choose this over the Biryani any day. Used to be just about as good as any meal you could get anywhere in New York - really - but quality has plummeted in the past few years. I kept trying to give them a chance but today was the last straw. In my mixed chicken and lamb, EVERY. SINGLE. PIECE. of lamb was 90% gristle. Some of the chicken pieces were mostly pink inside. I've had salmonella poisoning before. Never eating from here again. As a special bonus, it also takes way longer than it used to. Waited 10 minutes when there was only 1 person ahead of me; used to be 2-3 minutes, no matter how many people in line - they used to be super efficient. read more

Very clean food, at least compared to the rice platters you might find in other halal carts but I'm not sure if it is worth 13$ for the combo. Though it sounds like there are a lot of things being packed into the platter, and there is because the portion is large, the number of falafels and shrimp is just too little: three falafels and two shrimps. That is why I think it is a smarter idea to just get a combo platter with out the shrimp. I don't think it really brings anything to the meal. As for everything else, it's great. The rice is pulao style, not the typical oily rice you are probably used to and the lamb is ACTUAL lamb not just meat alternatives. Yes, most carts sell lamb that isn't even meat but rather soy chunks (surprise!). The lamb here is extremely tender and well cooked. And that is coming from someone who hates lamb because of the smell, I think the lamb here has absolutely no smell and tastes fantastic. The chicken is also pretty good, it tasted charred and clean. My favorite part of the meal though was definitely the falafel. It is extremely flavorful and I honestly wish there had been more. If it was up to me, I would buy the combo without the addition of the shrimp because it was a bit tough and flavorless to me. And the infamous jalapeño sauce was great too, it gave the food a little character which I think cart food tends to lack because it's so one note in flavor. Overall, it was a great meal. I'm curious to see how everything else tastes, but my coworker said the two for six Kati rolls were very good too. The Kwik Meal Cart I go to is on 47th off of Park, but it's the same guys who produce the great, relatively inexpensive, fresh food in a hurry. The guy cares - genuinely cares - about the food he cooks and The relationship with his customers. I regularly get the tilapia (yes, fresh tilapia from a food cart) over basmati rice and sautéed vegetables with yogurt sauce and also jalapeño sauce. A GREAT meal for only $8.50! Been coming here for years. Surprised I didn't write a review yet. From the price to the quality of food you get, it's a 5 star rating. They used to only have chicken, lamb, falafel, hot dogs and a cheese steak. Now they have everything from several types of fish to shrimp and the kati rolls. The seasonings on the lamb and chicken are fantastic. I usually get the combo platter myself. You get lamb and chicken with two pieces of falafel, and I order an extra Pita bread (if you go with this combo, be hungry you will be filled up quite fast) I highly recommend this cart to anyone, you can't go to any of the other carts that are now all over NYC. Went here after hearing about it from my bredren. My bredren visited so we took a stroll over. The cart does not look like a normal 'street meat cart', which made me trust it. Got the lamb kebab wrap to go. The wrap was on point, I just wish I was aware of the soupy-ness of this concoction. I didn't order a side of halal soup! The bottom of the bag became a mess and i had halal soup dripping all over my garments. All over my new J's! Needless to say, I have to hold the 5 stars because of such soupy-ness. This is as good as semi-traditional street meat gets. Non traditional would be your korean taco truck, lobster truck, or schnitzel truck for example.This is traditional in the sense that it is mostly meats over rice. Kwik's differentiation is his level of sophistication in the meats. My favorite is the lamb. It is real whole chunks of lamb. Name any other street meat cart and their lamb is the meatloaf version horizontally roasting on a spit. Kwik's lamb is cooked perfectly, juicy, great flavor... it has the robust taste of lamb shoulder chops, but none of the fat. His white sauce is divine, surely made with whole milk yogurt among other secret ingredients and his hot sauce is fairly mild, but packs flavor and saltiness. If you go here for the first time, get the lamb over rice. If you go here a second time, get the chicken over rice (significantly different than traditional chicken over rice). If you go here a third time, get the jumbo shrimp over rice.... yes, he serves fresh not-over-cooked shrimp in indian spices. read more

The lamb and rice with both the white (savory) and red (hot) sauces makes for a good and inexpensive lunch. The texture of the lamb surpasses that of most halal trucks. I don't know whether these trucks (there are two from the same owners, side-by-side) are actually better than the trucks downtown, but they're comparable. The rub here is that the price for the same meal is never the same on consecutive visits, and seems to be set by whatever mood the cashier is in. read more

Mmmm. Kwik Meal Cart? What a name... After reading about how this place had so many rave reviews by Fox, New York Post, New York Times, and the like, I decided to check out this place with my posse of 4. When we arrived down to the Kwik Meal Cart around 12:15pm, we were a bit skeptical since there was no line. We must have waited about 30 seconds, and then BAM, 4-5 people were on line. We jumped right behind them, and in about 2 minutes, there were about 10 people behind us. "Alright, alright", I said to myself, 'This place has got the hype. But can the food live up to the hype?" While standing on line, I noticed the several green Kwik Meal Cart signs laid across the top of the cart. Below it were dozens of awards, reviews, and articles about the food cart, all looked very promising. I took a glimpse inside the cart, and noticed the 3 cooks in their white executive chef-like suits, and was somewhat mystified yet curious as to why they would go that far to dress up as if they worked in a nice kitchen at a restaurant. In front, there was a triangle-billboard with the prices of several of their dishes. They were rather on the expensive side, chicken over rice for $6.00, lamb over rice for $7.50, combo platter (lamb & chicken) for $8.00, chicken pita for $4-5, mini chicken rolls for $2.50, and several other items. After only waiting about 5 minutes for the 7 people in front of me (my group + the 3 or so patrons), I decided to order the chicken over rice. Mmmm, the aromas coming from the cart smelled sooooo delish! Preparation was quick, the rice was already in several of the clear plastic containers (different from the typical aluminum platter containers, similar to the one's you would get when you have leftovers at a restaurant). Some shredded lettuce with a vinegrette dressing was thrown in one corner, some white yogurt thrown in another corner, and the chicken was thrown on top of the rice with some green hot sauce. (There is also a bottle of green hot sauce by the window for you spice lovers. The hot sauce, though not extremely hot, has a very nice kick, and I would recommend putting some extra on your chicken. Don't be intimidated by the green slime-like color.) The portions were a bit on the small side from the usual portions given at most other food carts. We took our dishes to the Rockefeller Concourse and grabbed a seat. I immediately opened up my container and took a whiff of the aroma. I sure was hungry now and soon scarfed it down. The chicken had intense flavors and seasonings, was tender and extremely yuummmyy! The rice was cooked just right, not mushy, and not too hard, with a hint of butter, but for the most part, plain. The shredded salad was in a vinegrette sauce which was light but complemented the chicken and rice. The yogurt was also very freshly prepared, and dipping the chicken with the green hot sauce into it, was just heavenly! What can I say? I think I might be a big fan of this place, though prices may be a little on the higher side. I can only say after I come back to this place to try their falafels, chicken with pita, and their lamb, which I have also heard many good things about. Kwik Meal does it right. Although I have sampled other stuff there, I usually get the lamb over rice, which is cubed chunks of yogurt marinated deliciousness served over a fluffy bed of Basmati rice. The spiciness of the homemade green hot sauce cooled off by the tangy raitha really compliments the tender grilled chunks of lamby tastiness. Sure it is seven bucks, and the portion isn't huge, but the portions are more than acceptable. I always ask for double meat and they charge and extra buck or two but it's well worth it. So do yourself and your stomach a favor and check this place out before the line gets any longer! read more

This is the best street meat that I've had in NYC hands down. Don't even bother with the rice plates because the pita is absolutely amazing. I had the chicken on pita and it was silly good. I was greeted by the very friendly owner Mohammed Rahman, and then I ordered a chicken, shrimp, and lamb combo platter for $12.50. As I waited, I read all of the articles and awards posted on their cart and I felt good about supporting someone who has clearly worked so hard in running his business. The smells emanating from the cart while Mohammed cooked our food literally made my mouth water. My boyfriend and I ran with our food over to the convenient public plaza across the street on 45th between 5th and 6th. The combo platter has a large bed of basmati rice with lots of bite sized pieces of grilled chicken and lamb, two large shrimps, two small falafels, a side of salad that reminded me of cole slaw, and then a decent portion of white sauce in one corner. I really enjoyed all of the meats. While the chicken was nothing spectacular, it was still juicy and flavorful. The lamb is the star - my boyfriend who hates lamb even said that it tasted delicious. The shrimps, while lacking in quantity, were very meaty and added a perfect amount of spice to the meal. The tzatziki sauce is unlike any other I've had - I wouldn't say I prefer it, but it certainly had more herbs and yogurt in it and seemed less unhealthy for you. I like that they didn't drench everything with it. I disliked the falafels because the texture was off and they had no flavor so I had to dip them in the tzatziki sauce. Great meat with a couple slightly spicy sauces - they've really got just the right amount of heat, leading to great taste and a pleasant tingle in the mouth. This cart is one of the best carts in the city! I have been living in NY since 1990 and have never eaten from a cart until a few years ago. I used to work on 39th and Bway and would go to a cart a block away. Then one of my coworkers recommended kwik meal. Even tho it was a little walk from my office I decided to give it a try. I was sold immediately! The walk was never a factor when I felt like eating from here. They have such a different flavoring than all the others. And surprisingly after I eat from here I am full but don't feel overly stuffed. I highly recommend this cart for something different and delicious!! And they accept credit cards! read more

This is definitely one of my favorite halal carts in the city. I'm not often in the Times Square/Bryant Park area, but whenever I am, I always stop by this cart! It is a little pricier than your average cart, but as others have said, the quality is noticeably higher. It's everything I wish my neighborhood halal was if I wanted to eat it every day. Don't get me wrong, there's a special place in my heart for the less fancy halal found all over New York, but it's fast food like Mcdonald's--Is it delicious after a late night out? Ya. Do I know what it's made of? Not in the least. Kwik meal is unlike any other halal I've had. It feels hearty and wholesome. Could almost pass as healthy in my book. The thing to get here is definitely the lamb over rice, and always ask for the jalapeño hot sauce! YUM YUM YUM. My friend Sherri F. recommended this place to me and I wasn't disappointed. The line was really short for midweek lunchtime and it moved quick. I had the falafel on pita for $4.50 which was delicious and well worth it. It had the perfect amount of veggies and white sauce (thank goodness it's white so I didn't ruin my white pants!!) and I am just the right amount of full.
