The best Chinese in town. They can do almost anything with tofu. They always remember our names. Awesome place.

This place is undoubtedly one of, if not the best Chinese in Reno. Last night, a few great friends took me to their special six-course Chinese New Year dinner. My friend had the reservation for nearly two months, and it was one of the best meals I've had in Reno 2019 is the Year of the Pig according to the Chinese zodiac. With that consideration, the First Course was a perfect beginning. First Course: Tofu Skin Seafood Roll & Roasted Pork Belly. It was served with a drizzle of an equally sweet and savory sauce on the plate. The pork belly was succulent and mostly melted in your mouth. The top cap was rendered quite a bit and achieved a very crispy/crunchy texture. Tofu skin is now one of my new favorite ingredients. The texture was lightly crisp on top and was juicy, but not greasy. The filling was a mixture of calamari, shrimp, and some vegetables and herbs. It was phenomenal. Second Course: Five Spice Sea Bass & Snow Peas. This was my favorite dish of the night. The fish was perfectly cooked, enveloped in an incredibly thin batter. It was delicate, well seasoned, and packed with flavor. On top of the sea bass were some finely chopped jalapeño, which may have been pickled; they didn't have that heat component you normally associate with jalapeño, and was a great complement to the dish. Snow peas were super fresh, and added a wonderful texture variation to the dish. Third Course: Soy Sauce Shrimp with Ginger Scallion Noodles. The chef changed up the menu slightly, switching the garnish of the shrimp and lamb courses. I'm glad that he did. The shrimp were served with the shells on both ends, for a beautiful presentation, and were delicious. The soy sauce shrimp sauce wasn't what I was expecting, it had a little sweetness to it, that really made the shrimp pop. The ginger scallion noodles were wonderful, eaten by itself and also with the shrimp. The ginger wasn't very powerful at all, and added a nice subtle flavor to an overall tasty plate of food. Forth Course: Hainan Chicken Rice. This dish is poached chicken and a seasoned rice. It isn't something you often see on menus in the US. The Hainan Chicken Rice gets it's name from it's origins in the Hainan province in southern China, but it was when the Chinese brought the dish to Singapore that it became famous. Absolutely the most flavorful chicken I've ever had. It was juicy, and the rice was cooked perfectly. The rice and chicken are both well seasoned mostly with salt, green onion, and ginger. It's a dish I would encourage you to try when you have the opportunity. Fifth Course: Grilled Lamb Chops & Snow Pea Tips. The final course before dessert was some of the best lamb chops I've had. They were very lightly marinated, which resulted in a delectable caramelization. The snow pea tips were much like chard, beautiful sautéed greens; everyone at the table felt they were one of the best components on any dish. Sixth Course: Steamed Egg Custard Bun with a Chinese Egg Tart. The custard bun was something unlike anything else I've ever tasted. It was round, and had the texture of the most soft dough you can imagine. It was coated in a peanut butter powder, and inside was delicious black sesame. It wasn't too sweet, and was a great new experience. The egg tart was very light and creamy, and topped with fruit. The sweetness mostly came from the mango, pineapple, strawberry, and blueberry. Each bite was unique, depending on which fruit you ate with it. I couldn't think of a better finishing dish after a magnificent meal. In regards to the wine, we started with a cold, crisp Prosecco. Then moved on to a robust Pinot Noir that bursts with cherry, strawberry, and plum flavors with a slightly sweetness that's moderated on the finish with rounded tannins, and finally an unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy Zinfandel. All of the wine paired really well and elevated the overall experience. The Pinot and the Zinfandel being the favorites. Danny is the one that runs Kwok's Bistro, and he's a really good guy and often displays a contagious smile. Winnie, our server, was an absolute delight. She's very friendly, outgoing, and has great energy and sense of humor, referring to her name as in "Winnie the Pooh!" Winnie made the evening that much more memorable. One of the best birthdays I've had, with the best people, and some of the best food in our big little city. I feel extremely lucky to have gotten a seat during their New Years celebration. Kwok's Bistro is definitely deserving of this fifth star, by every measure. read more

It's taken me all of 2020 to review this spot. After a recommendation from my husbands coworker we gave this place a try and boy it did not disappoint, we go at least once a month to get our fix. I love this place so much because they make pea sprouts sautéed in garlic, especially finding this dish here in Reno. If you love garlic and greens, eat this. There are too many yummy things to name. This place almost feels like the cheers bar, wherever everyone knows your name. The family does a great job of remembering their customers as well as their orders. How do you say DELICIOUS in Chinese (any dialect)??!!! Finally got a chance to stop by to see what all the fuss is about and let me say that this place lived up to the rave reviews from friends and family, as well as Yelp. My daughter and I the House Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef And Black Pepper Lamb, however when our order came, the first two dishes were correct but we got Szechuan Lamb instead. No problem - we decided to try it anyway and had no regret. The lamb was moist and tender, while the Szechuan sauce was fabulous! The House Fried Rice was exquisite - perfect morsels of Rice with the right amount of seasoning, mixed together with yummy bits of pork, beef, egg and perfectly cooked shrimp (my mouth is watering as I describe it!). Last but not least, the Mongolian beef was savory and cooked just right. Atmosphere - I remember China Diner and I must say I like what they've done with the place. The decor and color scheme are much warmer and modern; and the ladies' room was also quite modern and clean. For a small space, it was roomy enough to comfortably fit all the diners that trickled in after my daughter and I entered - we'd gone in for a late lunch around 3:30, and there was just 1 other gentleman who appeared to be picking up an order. By the time we left, about an hour later, the place had almost filled to capacity. There was just 1 waitress who was friendly and attentive, and she worked the room quite well. I must mention that while we were there, we witnessed acts of kindness that cannot go unnoticed - by a fellow diner and the owner. I don't want to elaborate in the event that their kindness is taken advantage of, but suffice it to say, my daughter and I left not only feeling full and content from Kwok's delicious food, but also with a boost of positivity. Omg, I had been waiting since the day then open to try this place! The food is amazing and the service is beyond believe. Our servers constantly checking on us to make sure we were doing ok. The older and lovely lady always stop by to talk to my son and amazing that he was eating their food. We ordered over $100+ worth of food for 3 people and there were no regrets. The dumplings were amazing which is what I had been hearing and the critics were right! I must say the duck and the lotus buns were a bit pricey as $20 for half a duck. Lol half of a really small duck but it was crispy and amazing so I'll live. Five spice pork was on point to the flavor. I wished I had two stomachs to eat everything!! Can't wait to come back to try the porridge there. Five stars all around and man, what took them so long to open up a place like this!!! read more

THE POTSTICKERS. Ever since I started working downtown I've developed an unhealthy addiction to these balls of porky goodness. Instead of a gyoza-esque potsticker (crescent shaped), these bad boys are thick round balls of pork and vegetables (chives? Cabbage?) covered in a lightly pan fried dough. I could drink the sauce they serve them with. Other items on the menu are also good, like the Mongolian beef or the fried rice, but the potstickers have inspired within me a fanatical devotion to this place. read more

The eggplant dish is delicious!! The beef is so tender, but the mongolian beef lacks heat. The fried rice is flavorful, but the pot sticker was a bit disappointing. I like more dumpling & needs more flavor & not a fan of the texture. read more

Kwok's is my go to Asian-cuisine restaurant in Reno. Their outside seating was really nice especially during COVID times. The whole family is amazing and service is always great. Pot stickers, five spiced pork/wings, and a noodle dish is the way to go. Family-owned local businesses are the best! read more

Kwok's Bistro - A Shining Star My first time here was February 2023 (remember this date further into review) based on a person's recommendation. What a find - we ordered Kwok's shrimp, Black pepper chicken, green beans, and rice. Danny was super helpful when placing our order and, because we were staying in a hotel (up from the SF-Bay Area), needed set ups (plates, napkins, etc.). When picking up the order, Danny remembered our needed setups and walked us through the order to be sure we had all we needed on this cold, wintry night. The food traveled very well back to the hotel. OMG - the food was amazing and flavors were spot on. Fresh, tasty, everything we needed on a cold night. Our party all agreed that Kwok's Bistro was a destination when up in the Reno/Tahoe area. Mother Nature had other plans and we were unable to return to the SF-Bay Area the next day and ended up at the hotel for two more days. Can you guess where we dined for these meals? Of course, we returned to Kwok's Bistro. Our next dinner featured Kwok's chicken, honey walnut prawns, Mongolian beef, and fried rice (don't judge - we were hungry ). Same great service with Danny and the whole crew. The food flavor, freshness, and temperatures were all 100%. Danny remembered our party, asked how our travel plans were progressing, remembered the needed set ups, etc. We looked at this extended stay as a blessing in disguise - were it not for the February 2023 snowstorm, we might not have discovered Kwok's Bistro. Finally, on our last dinner at Kwok's Bistro (during this trip), we ordered a number of dishes and even extra to take home! All great flavors, fresh, and traveled well back to hotel (and back to SF-Bay area). Our party agreed - we were planning our next trip around Kwok's Bistro! I love supporting small, family-owned businesses and especially when they deliver high quality and value for the money. You may find less expensive restaurants but likely none with such high quality ingredients, flavors, attention to detail, and care for the customer. *Note* - Since February 2023, I have been up to the Reno area twice and, yes, I've been to Kwok's Bistro both times. Wow. Stunningly good food and great service. Wine pairings were on point. Came with a large group of friends for a reserved party and had everything served family style. Highlights of the night were the sea bass, the duck buns, the shrimp and pork dumplings, lamb stew, and the scallop fried rice. Better than your average Chinese. It's pricey, but the flavors are awesome. I had the pot sticker and roasted duck with lotus buns. It was wonderful. My buddy had the Mongolian beef. It was better than most places, but I blame him for not adventuring. The pot sticker were huge. The flavor was mild and didn't make you feel overwhelmed with dumpling. The duck skin was crisp, and the meat was tender. It was served with hoisin and cilantro and a batch of the most delicate and soft lotus buns I've ever had. Worth the price, if you want something new. It's a family run place, and they make sure you are happy. Try it out and get something outside you comfort zone. read more

I had been rejected at the door as a solo diner more than a couple of times. When they just opened back some years ago, they were SUPER eager to please the customer however many dishes you order or people you go with. Too bad since I even brought my mother there when she was visiting from Japan. I stopped going there since the last time they treated me with ice cold indifference once they sat me at a table (I went alone) busy entertaining the next table of a large group. The food? Not worth the lack of warm service. The fried rice was super greasy and while it tasted good while eating, I always felt bad afterwards. So, not missing this place. read more

True overall rating 3 stars. Rating it 5 stars here so I know there's at least 1 dish here that is 5 stars to me. I've heard that Kwok's may be the best restaurant in town so I was very curious to try it, but perhaps as a Chinese person who grew up in the SF bay area I was overall quite unimpressed. Hot and sour soup - very good, actually kinda spicy. If I was looking for an above average hot and sour soup I wouldn't hesitate to come back for this. Salt & pepper whole fish - the minced garlic topping was delicious but the fish itself was a bit bland, there was not enough minced garlic to eat with the fish to make all of it delicious. I also asked prior to ordering if it was the kind of fish that was deep fried and the bones are crispy like chips (was forgetting what it was called in the moment) and they said yes. In hindsight I was looking for deep fried flounder and it was not flounder at all, bones were not edible. Dongpo pork belly - quite underwhelming Honey glazed prawns - I verified that the Chinese characters were the equivalent of what would be honey walnut prawns at most Chinese restaurants. They are only reminiscent of honey walnut prawns, seemed like an attempt to make them fancy (there was a hint of citrus flavor) but losing the tasty factor in the process. Chose this restaurant because of the reviews and it was within walking distance of where I stayed. My order was ready quickly and the staff was friendly. I ordered Kung pao chicken, honey prawns, pot stickers, and chow fun. The Kung pao lacked spice. It didn't even have the usual dried Chile pepper The honey prawns were soggy, the pot stickers were huge and undercooked. Lastly the chow fun was salty. I was so disappointed. All I could taste was salt. It cost me $50.00 and I couldn't even eat it! I don't know how this place gets such good reviews. I loved Kwoks food when he was at his last restaurant, it was just so far away. Now that he has opened kwoks bistro downtown it is much more convenient for me to enjoy his great food. It a small intimate place with seating outside as well. Staff is friendly and attentive. Food is amazing as always. We had 5 spice wings to start, my daughter ordered king Pao chicken she said it was great. I had beef stew which hit the spot. I was convinced there was no good Chinese food in Reno, man was I wrong. We picked up a to go order since we were on that side of town, but had no idea what to expect. We got the wonton soup, braised fried tofu, pork belly sliders and the house chow mein. I'll start with the only negative, the chow mein didn't taste like anything. The noodles were overcooked and it tasted like bland mush. I am assuming it was just an off night for that dish, because the rest of it blew my freaking mind! The pork belly sliders were a bit sweet, perfectly cooked, the picked veggies were perfectly balanced and the meat was rendered perfectly. Yeah, that's a lot of perfects. My husband called it a pork belly mcgriddle, and he wasn't wrong. The wonton soup was like a hug for my soul. The wontons were perfection, but that broth. It was buttery, unami, slightly sweet, and a big mouth feel. It may look light and lacking, it is not! The next time I need some comfort or am sick, this is what I'm getting. Now the tofu. I'm pretty sure someone sold their soul for the recipe, because my god it's incredible. I have never had better tofu. It was prepared gorgeously, and fried in a way I didn't even know existed. It soaked up all the braised liquid, and still retained the soft white velvet flesh inside. I may have cried when I took my first bite. I was dreaming about eating it again before I even finished it. It is rich, and and intensely flavored, and the texture and mouth feel are next level. If you're looking for good asian cuisine, please check this place out. Coming from NYC and SF, this place has been a place of respite for me. Items that I would order over and over again are: the beef congee, sweet spicy shrimp, salt and pepper tofu, crab fried rice and any chow fun. The potstickers are more like meatballs but they're really tasty! It's small so make reservations or do take out. I have yet to order everything on the menu but I'm working on it. Danny is really into craft beer so the beer menu is FANTASTIC. No desserts but honestly, you're not going to a chinese restaurant for dessert. read more

Wonderful food and great staff. We've been coming since they first opened. During this covid time all seating is on the patio..6/8 tables only. However, the problem is the lack of sun shade. Only one or two tables with umbrellas; the rest blasted by the sun. My wife cannot sit in the sun and if no shaded tables are available we leave. Many times so far. They probably lost enough revenue from us alone to afford some inexpensive Walmart umbrella's! read more

Delicious. What else would you expect from chef Kwok? I've been wanting to try Kwok's Bistro since it opened, and finally got around to it on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm. I love the remodel they did on the inside. Very nice and cozy ambiance. We ordered pot stickersX2, egg rolls, duck and beef stew over rice. If you've never had their pot stickers, they are hands down the best around. If you've been to Jazmine, you know what I'm talking about. Thin, perfect fried skin stuffed with pork. Egg rolls are perfectly fried and delicious. Beef stew was perfect. Soft, chewy tendon, tender beef, perfect flavor. The duck is probably the best I've had around Reno. The skin is so golden and crispy and the meat was perfectly flavored. Even my wife thought it was the best. Service was quick and attentive. If you haven't tried Kwok's Bistro, you should read more

I also had to check out the new happenings at the old China diner! They did a fabulous job remodeling the inside of this place! I like the outside area also, but it took away three parking stalls. Not a lot of parking. We only wanted a light lunch, so we had the pan fried noodles with chicken, and the pork belly special. I'm not a big noodle guy, these noodles reminded me of uncooked Top Ramen. I'm sure for the rest of the cooked noodles folks, these are probably awesome! It's just not my thang. I was going to get the pork belly sliders, but our waiter told me they had a special pork belly dish today, so I chose the special. It was a six piece block of fried pork belly. The outer skin was crunchy and very tasty! The only problem I had with the dish, was that it was cold inside. I really didn't expect that, being the pork belly novice that I am! Overall, I suppose we will return sometime. It didn't make the top of my go back list, but it does have potential. After reading other reviews, and looking at all the wonderful pictures, I think there's a few things on their menu that I would love to try! I will update this review after my next visit. read more

Sorry to all the folks who enjoyed the years of greasy Chinese food from China Diner. It's Kwok now. The once take out style ghetto fab Chinese joint has been replace with a hip asian zen joint. The service is amazing. For me the location can't be beat -- it's across the street from where I live. What I've tried so far: Potsticker - handmade and yummy. Paper thin skins stuffed with pork. Duck - excellent not too fatty - service with bao or moo shoo pancakes. I got a 1/2 duck and they gave me both. Fried calamari - not greasy -- needed more heat and a dipping sauce in my opinion Pork Belly Slider - good Chow Fun - solid dish - GREAT NOODLES Chicken Wings - nice but missing the spices for my taste Lamb - I don't remember what dish I had but the lamb was so tender. Everything at this place is amazing. The duck, general's chicken and chicken chow mien are all great. The duck was overall my favorite. The service is fantastic as well, we got a really great waitress that was quick, friendly and attentive. The only downside is they close pretty early. read more

I'm ruined coming here! There I said it, I can admit it. This might be the best Chinese food in Reno, definitely the best I've had here. In fact, making those kinds of comparisons it becomes a study of when and where and context; the food here pars against the benchmarks of my lifetime on any day of the week. First, Peking duck unlike any you'll get anywhere else in this area. Could it be served better, well they try, by offering it with moo shoo wrappers or fluffy doughy buns. Served up with sides of chili paste and plum sauce and slivered green onion. Seemingly odd, but actually very complimentary they add a few sprigs of cilantro, it finishes great with this delicious duck. The duck itself is so good one could just eat it plain, with its crunchy delicious skin and decadent savory meat. Again, so good it can be enjoyed alone, but so well complimented with the accompaniments. The duck is the thing that dreams are made of, riding through fluffy happy clouds painted by Bob Ross, upon the backs of unicorns, being fed by leprechauns, with rainbows everywhere. Yeah, it's that good, but there's more! The scallops were perhaps the most perfectly prepared I've had anywhere, ever, period! So incredibly buttery delicious, and with the XO season preparation it was completely unmatched. The barbecue pork and also the five spice pork again are so very good and without parallel in my life. A final mentionable note to the Singapore noodles served with pork and shrimp. Can I say enough, I haven't said already about everything else here? There will be many return visits. The duck will be the staple of our visits, but trust me, I'll be tasting much much more from the menu with great expectations. This is a family run business and they're gracious, friendly, and genuine. A note or two, the current location is cozy, and parking is sparse. We've parked in a nearby structure and there is street parking, but its not abundant so be prepared for a short walk, but be not deterred, it's worth it. I'll say I'd be surprised if they remained in this location long, but if they never move, I'll continue coming back. The staff is so warm and welcoming you'll feel like your home anyway; the food is so good you'd be back even were they not so inviting. This little small, quaint restaurant is a jewel. came in & we were sat. the restaurant can't hold more then 20-30 guest& the outside eating area seems larger, but for me that's what made me like this even more. the servers were so friendly and welcoming. i ordered shrimp and my boyfriend ordered the General chicken. Our food didn't take long & we dug in. i didn't like my shrimp but i loved my boyfriends chicken and it was enough for the both of us to enjoy and be full. i took my shrimp to go..... there was a homeless man sitting outside asking for food... and what did i have ? untouched shrimp and a full belly. and i gave it to him. it was meant to be lol. read more

Fortunate enough to be seated without having reservations. Located in the heart of downtown Reno in a small fine Asian cuisine restaurant. I ordered the house chow mien and the chef special shiitake mushrooms. I received exceptional service with menu recommendations. The food pleasing to my taste buds.
