3.5 stars. The restaurant is within the basement of the old post office. We arrived at 7:30 PM for our dinner reservation. The building itself is closed, so you just have to call the owners to let you down the freight elevator. Try to have your party arrive together so they don't have to do multiple pick ups. Inside, we sat at the counter top. Each of us had our own individual stove tops. The menu was pretty self explanatory. Choose a meat and they'll teach you what to do. There were 6 of us, some of us wanted the same American Wagyu. It made sense to order 20 oz and share with our partner. The owner advised us not to share, as this would compromise the experience and it wouldn't come with additional veggies and sauce. We didn't understand why we couldn't just order an extra plate of veggies + sauce, but sure we just agreed bc we didn't want to oppose. My partner and I each ordered 7 oz (which is less meat and more expensive compared to ordering the 20 oz and additional sauce/veggies). They have a nice array of sake, wine, and even non alcoholic beer. It did take 1.5 hrs since we ordered for our food to come. The owner was nice and made good conversation. I saw in the back, Yumi (the owner/ wife) was slaving away in the back and hand cutting the meat. They did mention they were down 2 workers, but instead of talking to us, he could have helped her? I felt bad that she was doing so much work. When our food finally came, he taught us how to prepare the food. The veggies and meat were fresh and tasty. About 5 min later, he said "ok my job is done here" and proceeded to lay on the couch right next to us with his feet up and use his phone to watch videos on max volume. There was awkward silence, and one of the ladies in our party had to play background music to offset the awkward silence. In the end, he did use the rest of the ingredients to make the a soup for us to take home. I liked the no waste concept. I guess if you shared, you wouldn't each get the soup at the end but you're coming for the shabu not the soup, correct. We had a birthday cake and he gave us lighters and helped us prepare which was nice. Overall, I'm glad we came, but I don't think we would come again. read more

Dinner last evening was incredibly special. Tadaima Shabu Shabu accomplished an incredible feat. They hit a home run on each category I hold dear when dining out. Service started strong and not once waned. They actually exceeded my expectation. the ambiance was a perfect 10. We ate early so we missed the freight elevator experience but will absolutely make sure we have an after 6:00 reservation so to not miss the "speak easy" vibe next visit.Dinner was absolutely amazing. Of course I ordered too much meat but will definitely do the same next time. The soup they create from your leftovers was at least as fantastic as the original "swish swish" Shabu Shabu! The beautiful fresh and local sourced meats are impressive. They have a meat cutter slicing meats and rolling them to order. All a visual titillation. The veggie platter is a work of art. It had chicken meatballs, chicken, pork belly, 2 versions of wagyu meat all locally sourced on the plate. The owners are fabulous and sooo fun!! They are open past 6pm when the basement closes you just have to make reservations. It's quite an intimate experience but go an hour before you are actually gonna be hungry. Wow what an experience! Do not be fooled by the hours, they are open past 6 pm you just have to call ahead to reserve and enter speakeasy style down the freight elevator. Husband and wife duo single-handedly bringing great quality meats Japanese style to the heart of Reno (in the basement). The meats are cut fresh and sliced perfectly for the swish-swish dunk into the hot broth. I had experienced hot pot before but not shabu shabu, as the owner described that means I had driven a honda and now I'm ready to level up to a tesla! The beef and pork need only a few seconds in the heat to be perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth delicious. The chicken meatballs were so flavorful and juicy and everything was perfectly. The veggies were actually one of my favorite parts, because the mushrooms and cabbage soaked up so much flavor. The dipping sauces added a lot of flavor too, and Yumj was so kind and attentive to always offer some extra rice. We were a little confused about how to order at first, the way it works is everything is a platter so with each order you get a big side of veggies, and every person should have their own personal veggie side. For four people we were full on a 10oz beef platter, 7 oz pork platter and chicken meatballs 12 count. But that can vary depending on hunger levels. Don't worry about over ordering as it will all get eaten and you can always save some for leftovers. Sean and Yumi will turn your leftovers into samurai soup and mix whatever's left for a scrumptious second meal the next day! The whole experience was family style intimate and cozy we were just chatting for a few hours about our favorite spots in Reno. There's no rush and you can really relax and enjoy your food! Food- we got the American wagyu, I'd say it tasted pretty average in terms of quality. I would have liked to see more veggies, udon, and sides. Leftovers were all put into a container as a "soup" for later which was nice, I'd go against putting in all of the sauce in the soup as instructed, as mine was too salty. I'd recommend ordering a large platter to share if you want the same meat and ordering extra veggies/sauces as needed. Ordering separately gave us less food and too much sauce. Ambiance- enjoyed the intimate seating, but would have liked if there was music. If you wanted to converse with your party, I wouldn't come here, as the owner would be interacting with you and listening in for most of the experience. Even when he wasn't interacting with us, he laid down on a couch next to us watching Youtube videos loudly. Service- I understood they were trying their best. Provided us everything we needed for the experience and taught us how they liked to eat their shabu. We had a birthday cake and they were nice enough to help us out. The restaurant is a hidden gem down in the basement which provided such a warm, cozy ambiance. Just being opened a bit over 30 days, they did a great job in providing seating (although they are currently working on adding even more). The owners were very nice and amazing. If you know anything about Shabu Shabu, then you will know that Reno is lucky to have this new Asian restaurant in town, providing the only Shabu place that is actually way better than many other Shabu places in big cities. I will warn you it is addicting. The ambiance is that of a speakeasy since they are in the basement of a historic building in downtown just down the streets from the original casinos in Reno.
