Tasty! Very friendly service! It was my first visit but our server recognized that my friends had been here before. We came here because we were craving quality ramen, and that's exactly what we got. The regular ramen has porkbelly meat and half a soft-boiled egg. The meat was great. Actually, everything I had here that was "meat" was awesome. We had chicken meatballs and pork dumplings as well, and they were delicious enough that we ordered more after our entrees. Perfect size of menu; not too big, so they clearly focus on what they're good at. They have some hot dogs! I want to come back and try the hot dogs! I think I like this place. read more

Great ramen is incredibly difficult to find in the Twin Cities. So when I discovered Kyatchi on Yelp and saw that they served it, I immediately wrote, "Eat at Kyatchi, ASAP" on my to-do list. The very next day, I visited during lunch with my girlfriend. This charming izakaya has a beautiful wooden floor, vibrant drooping tapestries, unique hanging lights above the bar, lots of light, and a huge mural that combines both iconic Japanese art with, uh... baseball? (Super cool, though!) Major props to the person that designed this place! For appetizers, my boo and I shared the agedashi dofu and avocado and egg hotdog with Japanese potato salad. We each had a bowl of the ramen. -Agedashi Dofu (cubes of deep fried tofu in dashi broth with shiitake): When I delicately plucked my first piece with chopsticks, the fried batter came off of the tofu. (Hmm, kind of a turn off.) Regarding the taste, I thought the dish could have used a bit more flavor. Some salt would've done the trick. (2/5) -Avocado & Egg Hot Dog (like the name says and with Japanese mayo): For nine dollars, I really hoped this dish would be totally awesome. While I loved the unique flavor and texture from the hotdog and the tasty goodness from the avocado and egg (it seems like these two ingredients always make dishes taste better), overall, each bite was on the dry side. If there was Japanese mayo, I didn't really taste it. There was just something missing to make it absolutely delectable. So close! The potato salad was yummy, and I thought it went well with the hotdog. This is perhaps my favorite part of the meal. (3.5/5) -Ramen (chicken broth with pork, egg, green onion and bamboo shoots): Great pork belly, nicely done poached egg, yummy bamboo, and decent noodles. Regarding the broth, hmm, I'm not sure if this is a shoyu, but if it is, then I think it lacked some soy sauce flavor. (3/5) -Service: Our server was really nice and informative, but the food came out a bit slow for only having four total customers in the restaurant. (4/5) Overall, this newcomer (I think it just opened four weeks ago) has some really great things going on for it. Despite the fact that this is a bit of a schlep for us, I foresee many more visits. We went very early on the Saturday before Labor Day (like 4:30 early) and the place was empty. The waiter was incredibly attentive and obviously really proud of the place. The sustainability factor is pushed pretty hard, which is fine, but the actual taste is the key of course. And it's very very good. The ramen was just lovely, light and tasty. The sushi has that extra edge, that delicate touch that puts it over the top. There's a great beer and wine list, and a kids' menu (for next time) that promises greatness. This is a real gem. read more

I would not come back here again. Maybe I just don't understand Japanese food but I know my food. I know what tastes good and nothing tastes good here. Homemade Kaiso salad - very bland. We didn't even finish it. Miso soup - too salty. My husband and I both added water to it which cooled it down and we couldn't enjoy it. Sake roll - very simple. Nothing special Suzuki roll - pressed sushi. Too much rice and hardly any fish. This is a block of rice topped with some sea bass, tasted like toothpaste with fish. And it's $14. I didn't even eat half of it. The menu is hard to read. I didn't know what 75% of the menu said. I had to ask the waiter. He was very patient but it didn't help us understand what we were actually ordering. Hard to place an order when you don't even know what you are ordering!!! The bill came to $85. Had a friend from out of town and we went here for dinner. Our server was very knowledgeable about the seafood and sustainability but a bit inattentive. When we were ready to order another round of sushi our server didn't come to the table for 15 minutes, yet served others around us. The food was great, and we got two rolls, a hotdog, the meatball appetizers and the suzuki. Everything was fantastic and had well matched flavors. The suzuki comes with lemon pieces on top and has strong citrus notes. It's very refreshing for a hot day. The potato salad on the hot dog was very creamy and light. It's closer to the mustard/mayo version rather than vinegar based, but it's not too rich given the amount you receive. I also highly recommend the appetizers. They were out of the mushrooms so we got the meatballs and chicken. The meatballs were phenomenal. I don't know what seasoning they use but it's very flavorful. Highly recommend! Happy hour gives you $2 off tap beers, and sake specials. I got a plate of 5 pieces of sashimi and rice (chirashi) for $10-that's a steal. I got the unfiltered sake for $5 which was delicious as well. They have house made seaweed salad which was delicious-sesame oil soy sauce vinegar combination. I sat outside which was nice as well-7 tables outside to choose from and inside had a sushi bar and other tables. I had a very prompt server who explained the menu to me which was highly appreciated. Yes. Yes. Yes. If you like sushi and Japanese food you must check this place out. The rolls are killer (I had the Wanna Roll, haha) and their seafood is some of the best I had in the U.S. Try their grilled mackerel with sea salt and their grilled squid. Both are "out of your mind and off your face" kinds of fantastic. Just beautiful dishes. They also have... Wait for it... Hot dogs. Yup, I said it. Hot dogs, with a Japanese twist. Something about one of the owners once being the personal chef of a Japanese Twins player, once. Or some shit, I don't know, I was busy stuffing my face with sushi. Soooooooooo good. The only I didn't pop for the full 5 stars was because their service was a little slow. Surprisingly good food. My boyfriend and I arrived during happy hour and we were rather surprised on how good things tasted even with a hr or two before closing. Though their HH menu was quite small it did offer a pretty good deal for items compared to their regular priced dinner menu. I opted for the chirashi which was a good portion for the HH priced I paid of $10, plus they weren't afraid to give you good pieces of sashimi, like hotate, for having paid their HH price. My bf order the soba dog which he was satisfied about. I wasn't too thrilled about the cost for it, since it was a hotdog but overall taste was good. We also ordered a pork belly kushimono (tontoro) which was excellent with sea salt. Can't complain really about the overall visit. When my budget allows, I can easily wolf down absurd amounts of sushi. I have wowed many a date this way. My love of Japanese cuisine has sophisticated over time from ordering plain crab stick rolls to longing for the minimalist flavors of miso soup. I love places that have a variety of options that let me experiment with Japanese flavors in ways I haven't before. The boo and I were trying to decide between Tanpopo and Midori's Floating World Cafe when Kyatchi popped up on Yelp. I am so glad we found this place. I really like the atmosphere. The vibe is modern and clean (they have the cutest little baby potted plants on the tables!). Our server seemed a bit overwhelmed with the Friday night crowd but he was friendly. Their menu is diverse and I was happy to see numerous options outside of the usual sushi a la carte and teriyaki entrees that grace generic menus. The food was light with raw flavors in a manner that embodies what I feel to be a more traditional version of Japanese. We ordered a pork belly skewer, ramen, and veggie tempura. The skewer was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. My veggie tempura was airy and crispy. The sauce was mellow in nature with a lovely brothy feel. The boo's ramen must have been pretty good because he devoured it. I tried a sip of the broth and it was simplistic with a savory chicken flavor. Kyatchi has a place in the MPLS sushi scene. They have great sushi - but this is not their only focus. The story is that when former Twins pitcher Nishioka was cut after a high salary and less than commensurate performance, the personal chef he hired decided to stay in the cities and open this place up. Here - you are gonna order bites for $3-8 like skewers, miso, creative salads, rolls, etc. Or you will go for the sushi platter. Or maybe a hot dog in nod to baseball past. I heard about the oshizushi (pressed sushi) here and made a reservation right away. I haven't had oshizushi in years, and I felt any place that had oshizushi on the menu must know something about Japanese food. I wasn't disappointed. So much to love about this place. Sustainable seafood. Authentic menu. Hot towels. A cute name ("catch," as in catching a baseball and perhaps catching a fish). Artwork and authentic Japanese baseball memorabilia that evoke the name. As I scanned the menu, I made a mental note of what I would try next time (ramen, donburi, tonjiru pork stew...and it goes on). We ordered the mackerel and sea bass oshizushi, salmon skin salad, and nukazuke pickles. The oshizushi was wonderful, as promised. When the server asked me if it was as good as what I had five years ago, I had to qualify my answer that last time I was close to the ocean. (On the bullet train headed to Shizuoka, in fact.) But in any case, very good. I thought they fell down a bit on the salmon skin salad and the nukazuke, though. The salmon skin salad dressing was wonderful, but the salmon skin itself seemed to need salt (perhaps purple shiso salt!). The nukazuke pickles tasted like they hadn't been pickling for a week, but since I don't like super strong pickles that's not a bad thing. Several reviews compared Kyatchi unfavorably with certain other restaurants, on the grounds that the prices are too high. Having been to many other sushi joints in the Twin Cities and having lived in Japan for six years, I would say that Kyatchi stands head and shoulders over the vast majority of the other Japanese restaurants in the area in terms of authenticity, food quality, and overall experience. Yes it is more expensive, but in my opinion completely worth it. Service was quick and attentive. And there was parking by the side of the building. I tried this place for the first time during the pandemic and the service seemed very safe and professional. The food was slid across a six foot table in a paper bad. The food itself was very fresh and fresh with an excellent balance of flavors. We got pressed king salmon sushi and iwana roll and yellowtail roll and karage. We were looking for a sushi place somewhat late at night and this was one of the restaurants close by that had good reviews. We had high expectations but it wasn't that good for the price. We ordered quite a few rolls and other than the sushimi and chicken skewers, which were awesome, everything else was okay but nothing special. The pork belly skewers were not very good - they had a lot of fat. We also tried the hot dogs, which were unique. We got both the Yakisoba and House - we would recommend the former. I was very excited to go try Kyatchi after reading about it on Eater. Hai Hai and Martina were in the same post. They are both marvelous so I figured this should be the same. I was a bit disappointed. The hot dog was ok, but award winning... I wouldn't agree. I'd say get one at the ball park or even Can Can Wonderland. The ramen was supposed to have pork belly. There were two tiny bites and that was all. Then came the chicken meatballs. They were good, but served with a load of rice that wasn't worth eating once the meatballs were gone. I also got a small salmon sushi roll. It was fine. As for a beverage, the lemonade was very sweet and sour. It was very tasty. The bad... the server was basically not there. I should have called my order in. After two items he dropped off the check. Ummm I wasn't done ordering. Then once I was ready to go he needed to be flagged down. He then apologized for not being around much. He said they were short 2 servers. Maybe he should have started off by explaining this? I really wanted dessert, but this was such an ordeal that I waited to eat dessert once I got home. I didn't have more time to waste. read more

I can't say enough about Kyatchi. The food is amazing, but my review is motivated by the fantastic service and attention to the customer. I had an old friend in from out of town. I'd been to Kyatchi many times, but for him it was his first time. We didn't make a reservation (fail), and the place was full up. Rather than making us wait, they offered us the chef's table. Our server was awesome - friendly and happy to make recommendations. Since we were seated near the chef, he chatted with us, it was all amazingly friendly and we were made to feel really special. When we left, we got a "thanks for coming" from our server, the chef, the greeter and another server who we didn't even interact with. My friends and I walked out and were so impressed with the treatment we got and the amazing food. I give this place 4 stars for quality of food, not necessarily value. For example 5 pieces of Goyza for $8 is a bit absurd. If you want fairly decent quality and good price point then happy hour is the winner. Also don't expect large sizes. Quantities are fair but you won't be full by ordering just one dish. Kyatchi is a showy breed of Japanese restaurant. Maybe I'm just a purist. I tend to like Japanese food that's a bit more "reserved," for lack of a better term. Japanese food doesn't need particularly strong flavoring or flashy ingredients, providing that enough care is paid to the basics: broths, rice, freshness of meats and fish. I think of the old Tampopo in downtown St. Paul. Kyatchi's food isn't bad, but the basics aren't strong enough. Rice in an onigiri was hard, the broth in a kitsune udon was pallid. Sushi rice was lackluster. Instead, the ume was very tart; the tofu was heady with mirin; the fish tasted bright and strong. Bad food this does not make. It is just one approach. If I came back, I would get the types of food that lend themselves to bold tastes and don't need much background effort. The hot dogs, perhaps; yakisoba. But odds are for the price, I may not be back. read more

The sushi is quite good. As someone who is does not see much difference in quality between most sushi places and Kroger's deli, this one really stood out! In addition I had the chicken broth ramen, which was good, but the star player here was the pork belly. In the ramen, the pork belly fat was melt in your mouth, that's how you know it's good. My roommate and I are fans of sushi and always looking for new places. This one was a hit! A bit smaller than we expected, but we loved how the menu was simple, short and sweet. I ordered chicken meatballs and pork belly skwers to start, and I chose a sushi roll topped with salmon and filled with asparagus, cucumber, and Japanese mayo. I loved the little bits of char from the grill on my skewers. The meatballs were seasoned well, and the pork belly practically melted in your mouth. None of it was dried out. The teriyaki sauce was flavorful without being thick and sticky. Made it seem much more light and flavored the meat without overwhelming it. The roll was great! Kyatchi made for the perfect date night! We had reservations for a Saturday evening, which I highly recommend, as the place was packed and buzzing with good energy when we arrived at 7:15pm. We were greeted and seated at our table immediately, and loved the vibe and the nod to baseball throughout, especially the mural on the wall as a focal point. Daisy, our server, was phenomenal! Truly the best server I've ever experienced. She made us feel like her friend, and took time to chat and joke with us. She had fantastic recommendations for a good drink, as well as for our meal, and did such a nice job explaining the dishes and describing the various tastes and flavors involved! She was so attentive to us, stopping by on several occasions to check-in, even though she had several other tables; we felt like MVPs here! I went with the Japanese plum beer, which was crisp, light, and delicious! I also ordered the Yakisoba Dog and Ebi Mayo sushi, which was described as pink shrimp with a Japanese mayo. When the food arrived, I took a few bites and found it to be soul-satisfying! I was searching for the hot dog, but couldn't find it, and we discovered that Daisy thought I had ordered the Yakisoba Noodles instead, and quicky brought out a hot dog (comped on our bill) so I could create my own. However, the noodles were just so mouthwatering that I couldn't stop going back for more. The poached egg on top was cooked perfectly and when broken and spread over the noodles, created a richness that was just so good! This was by far my favorite dish of the night! While the Ebi Mayo was cold and fresh, it didn't seem to have much flavor, so was a bit disappointing. Things got better when we were offered the dessert menu! Daisy recommend the black sesame Panna Cotta for something new and adventurous, or the Miso Caramel Cheesecake for a good general go-to; we couldn't decide, so we ordered both! The Panna Cotta was mind-blowing and the best dessert I've ever had! Sweet, creamy, crunchy, smoky -- it hits on so many flavor points and pops in your mouth! We loved that we were able to make friends with the people sitting next to us, and more importantly, we never once felt rushed during our entire two hour meal, which was amazing! The rolls are new and different, the rice was just right, and our starters (skewers and pickled veggies) were just what. Vegetarian Kara-Age... it is like a savory dessert appetizer. Light crunch on the outside, silky tofu inside, an spicy mayo sauce that is never wasted. Because I will wipe the remnants out with a finger when I think no one is looking and savor the last little bit. I mentioned the Chirashi Bowl, but what I didn't realize is: the dinner portion is twice the size of the happy hour portion. Not that one grain of rice want to waste. Twice the satisfaction. Tasted veggie Ramen. Was yummy, & I love corn in soup. They won me over with that. Curry Udon. Not your typical curry, the spices and flavors with the comfort-food feeling of noodles is also a winner. I loved them, but but when I go to a sushi joint, I want fish. THE SUSHI. Clean and pure tasting, seductive texture, and I love that they are sustainable. Love that. The Chef's Sashimi should be a source of pride. Every delicate individual piece of sashimi virtually melts in your mouth. Then it travels to your brain, releasing endorphins, which, in turn gives a mild but rockin' body buzz. I like the rolls, salmon avocado is my fave, but I am sashimi fixated. The best fish I have had in MPLS in 20 years. The rice / noodle bowls / hot dogs give you the biggest bang for your buck. But don't steer away from the starters/ sushi. My curiosity finally got the best of me. I read a review on Kyatchi about 1-2 years ago and remember it only because it focused on the fact that they have hot dogs on their menu along with sushi and other Izakaya style offerings. I remember thinking that must be some type of gimmick and was confused by the menu item but figured I could go through life just fine without ever experiencing a Japanese hot dog. The other night while looking for a place to eat, we decided to give it a try primarily because we were in the area and drove right by it. I was immediately struck by the unique, independent feel of the place with a big baseball mural on 1 wall and a bar against the other wall. There are baseball jerseys and memorabilia hanging and at that moment the connection between Japan, baseball, and hot dogs all came together and made sense. There were 4 hot dogs on the menu that are bizarre concoctions of almost crispy beef sausages served with "Japanese Potato Salad" (forgettable and tasted really just like bland, ordinary potato salad) and topped with various odd combinations such as noodles, ginger, egg, avocado, mayo, etc. You get the bizarre picture I'm sure. While the target for me was to get one of these hot dogs to see what this was all about, the hot dog was actually one of the only things I had that I would probably pass on in the future. It was ok but not worthy of something that I would put on my list for last meals on Earth. However, many of the other items we sampled were amazing including the Tai Shiso roll paired with a lemon juice dipping sauce and the Gyu Tataki which was an amazing ponzu kissed take on carpaccio with incredible beef as the base. Many other items that I will have to try on my next visit including some rice bowls and ramen bowls that sound amazing as well as several grilled skewers. I now get the concept and this could quickly become one of my favorite spots in the city. My only regret is that I wish I had discovered it sooner. read more

I think I found my favorite sushi restaurant in the twin cities. We sat at the sushi bar and the chefs, Ber & Danny were friendly and made excellent sushi suggestions. Everything tasted wonderful: I love that the nigiri and sushi rolls weren't stuffed with rice and filled with all kinds of crazy sauce that would take the flavor away. The sushi was simple and that's how it should be to really taste the fish. I'll be back again and bring my friends. My favorite nigiri: Try the Tai (Red Snapper). They put shiso and a little bit of sea salt on it--so good that you don't need to dip it in soy sauce. Oh and did I mentioned that they have happy hour everyday from 4-6 and 10 till closing? Honestly I do not usually post reviews but have to let people know about this. We wanted to try this place because somehow they got good reviews and we were very disappointed. I actually think people were paid for their good reviews. I do not recommend this place at all. The only thing that was good was the shishito peppers. It's extremely overpriced for the poor quality. I'd rather walk to Plymouth from Uptown for sushi than eat here again. Highlights include the "tuna" onigiri having tuna salad (?) in it and the overcooked salmon onigiri being too chewy to eat. read more

First time... Tried Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri combo.... Honestly fish quality was not really good and actually bad. .. Not fresh and looked few days old.. Squid also not taste well and just boring.. Two of my friends, boyfriend and I had decided to try this place out for dinner one night and it was okay. We got there around 7 pm and the crowd was okay. The restaurant is rather small and very hipstery, but really cute with their decor. My boyfriend and I ordered skewers (chicken meatballs, beef, and pork belly) and some sushi and a sushi roll. We ordered Ebi mayo (shrimp with Japanese mayo), it wasn't great. My until my boyfriend asked our server who had forgotten to put the order in. He got his food when he was almost done with his. The service was nice and friendly, but i did get overcharged in my bank account for $135 when i paid $30 on my card and my boyfriend paid the rest in cash. We were super upset because it was a pending transaction for almost five days. I dont think we'll be coming back to try this place unfortunately. read more
