Food was excellent and great sushi and sashimi selections. Strongly recommend this restaurant

first we ordered by phone and picked up (family still covid shy), service was timely and friendly. The order was correct, which is not always a given these days with restaurants in general. My family had a little bit of everything and we all thought the food was delicious and nicely portioned. The time i did spend in the restaurant itself, though limited, showed it to be clean and well taken care of. it was relatively quiet for a Sunday night, but I had no reason not to go back and eat their in person when the rest of my family is ready or i am in the area again myself. read more

We ordered different soups, I was served mine quickly, while my date waited 7 minutes for hers. Who trained the waitress to serve this way? We asked for water and 10 minutes later I asked again for water. It's not that they were too busy to attend to us. Over ppriced. read more

Deceptive billing: My kids loved the food and the adults thought the food was ok but nothing special it is very pricey for what you get, and when asked for glasses of hot water and tea they said they don't have hot water. When we asked for spring water, they brought smart water instead, I rejected my smart water, and then they brought me the spring water I had originally asked for. At the end of the night, each bottle of smart water was $2 more than the spring water. They also had a few previously undisclosed charges on the bill, $1 for each free side salad and $2 for each beef dish because of a brand change. I asked how much a pitcher of soda was and she said I don't know, and gave me three potential prices, needless to say, we skipped it. Their miso soup tastes like it came out of a can and they cut up pieces of tofu to make it more "ethnic", their salad is dole iceberg lettuce with one cucumber slice and very good carrot ginger dressing - I find it interesting that a regular salad is $5 and if you add avocado to it, the price doubles, save for the dressing, there is nothing Japanese about the salads. But don't judge a Japanese Steakhouse on their whack soups and salads. Judge them on their steak or sushi - both of which are very good. I would recommend getting their meat bento box, you will get to laugh at the soup and salad - but you will get a small terryaki steak, with crunchy chicken wings, veggie tempura, chicken maki role and some skewers of meat. If not for the Steak Bento Box which allows you to sample a bunch of menu items for less than $50 (tip included) I wouldn't walk in the place. DINERS BEWARE. I took my beautiful date here the other night, filling her head with promises of delicious food and a truly Oriental feel. Having not been to KYO for the better part of fifteen years, I had either forgotten or not noticed the truly cheap and terrible experience that comes with a night at KYO. I called beforehand to reserve a booth. The booths have elevated floor levels, where one sits on a cushion on the floor for a uniquely Japanese feel. I was told that they are only for "real meals". When pushed to explain, the man on the other side of the phone elaborated: an entree, a main and a dessert. No problem, we planned on ordering those. We arrived at 5:45. Maybe a little early for dinner, as there was nobody there. We were told we couldn't sit in the booth unless we spent a $100 minimum. Looking at the menu, it seemed like reaching triple digits would be difficult for the two o us, so we sat at a traditional table. The meal hadn't begun and I was already annoyed. Throughout our evening, from 5:45 to 7 PM, only one other customer walked in...and she took her food to go. We spent $85 on mediocre food at best. The Pros: One dish came in a copper pot, which was novel. The water did not taste like toilet bowl water, to their credit, and all of the food was kosher. The Cons: Everything else. If it's 15 years before I return, it will be too soon. read more

This place does not know how to treat customers nor their employees. At first when we came in with some friends it was not busy at all. We received our menus and they gave us tea. The Asian woman said it was green tea but it was way to dark for green tea and tasted like black tea. The tea came cold not even warm and was disgusting. My friend and I order miso soups and they too were cold and it didn't even taste like a miso soup, the tofu had huge chunks and was cold. I have been to plenty of other kosher sushi places and this one was the worst. We told the owner to take back the soup as it was cold and then we overheard her yelling at her employee saying she should check the soup to make sure it is hot before taking it out and said next time to microwave the soup! Eww how can you serve someone microwaved soup???? She wanted to give us warm soup but we declined. The sushi wasn't the best but was ok. When we got the bill she still charged us for the soup and when we explained to take it off the bill as we didn't eat it and it was brought cold we didn't want it anymore she made a fit and was rude ever since. She kept going in the back and yelling at the employee which we felt bad for because it wasn't her fault. The Asian woman that is the owner didn't even check because she brought out the soup and was rude ever since we demanded to take the soup off the bill. The prices are too expensive for a place that doesn't have the greatest food. Never going back here again and I'm not from Monsey just wanted some good kosher sushi. read more

Took my parents and son there last night. Nice ambiance but the Korean owners are so high strung it is impossible to relax. I ordered the beef sukiyaki which is a Japanese dish I have come to rely upon as always being delicious. However the meat so tough it was inedible-the vegetables tasted like they came out of can. It was served in a beat up old bunt pan instead of the usual pot with a cover. The tasteless rib steaks which we ordered two of for $38 each were so ridiculously expensive it was a joke. Overall a big ripoff with overpriced tasteless food and owners so focused on making as much money as possible instead of focusing on their patrons dining experience-it's just not worth it. It will be a long time before I go back to this restaurant. read more

Had a sushi roll. Pretty good. Sake and beer were fine of course. Wanted to eat more and drink more but the prices were very high. Chicken dinner on the board was just over 35. As you walk into Kyo it has a really relaxed ambiance. There are private party rooms where you take off your shoes and sit on the floor and get a real Japanese experience. The sushi is out of this world and the owners will make up any roll for you if you ask. There is a fish tank in the middle of the room and when I casually asked my waiter "if I can pick out my dinner", he didn't get it and probably thought I was off my rocker. oh well it made me laugh. The unique thing about this restaurant is that not only is their sushi good, all their food is good, I especially like their appetizers such as chicken wings yummy! I have only one complaint.. The owner circles the restaurant like a tiger waiting for you to finish your meal. Kind of made me feel uncomfortable like I had to quickly eat or my plate will be taken away. Oh and I almost forgot this place is KOSHER. so check it out.. its good. read more

this restaurant has seen better days. If all you want is sushi and dessert they're good. If you'd like a nice meal I'd say to go find a different venue. They are extremely pricey and haven't updated a thing since they opened. They do have a fun place to sit which they reserve for parties of 10 people. read more

We had a dish from all parts of the menu. The sushi was of poor quality and poorly made. It was Sunday night and it is probably very difficult to get sushi quality fish after Shabbat or the day that most fish markets are closed. The miso soup was very average. Quality miso can be purchased and made at home. So when one goes out to a restaurant one expects something a little better. I had the kabocha salad, which had roasted kabocha on top a large amount of lettuce and some tomato. The squash was fine but the abundance of lettuce as filler in the salads is really not welcomed ( and the restaurant does this in all of their salads). My husband had the chicken sukiyaki. It was sweet and savory but in a unbalanced way, not pleasant. The main ingredients tasted boiled rather than sautéed , which they should be. It featured chipped up chicken instead of nicely slicced chicken breast; big chunks of uncooked tofu were thrown in - the tofu should be broiled and somewhat chewy,, and the whole thing was presented like slop. I had the a chicken and udon soup, which feature undercooked and too much udon, similar chippy chicken, with two pieces cooked with tempura, and a similar mishmash of napa cabbage and other flarb. In other words they don't even care or try. I suppose this would be fine if it was inexpensive. However they charge fine coin and this food is slop. If you are interested in good Japanese food save your money and purchase a cookbook. There are many of then and many recipes are kosher or can be made kosher. Sushi is very simple to make and with practice anyone can turn out a well presented roll. In other words save your money and eat at home. This restaurant should try caring about Japanese food and give customers a good taste. read more

I really like Kyo, and when I visit Monsey it is one of my favorite spots. The sashimi plate is really good, nice presentation and a good selection of fish on a bed of shredded daikon radish. It's my favorite. They also have a decently priced lunch special. I also find the service really good. read more
