I felt an update was in order since I am officially addicted to udon soup thanks to Koto! Their service seemed to be quicker on this visit so I have to give the kudos for that. I also have to note that their wasabi shumai is killer. The fresh wasabi they make is back of the brain good. Those of you who love the hit you get from horseradish get it. Pretty good. The Miso Soup was one of the best I ever had, it had a little more "depth" compared to most. I had a salmon special appetizer that was really good. You might want to consider moving that microwave a little further away from the dining area. It was not annoying but I could see how it could disturbed some people. read more

Ordered Hibachi Steak for dinner. The steak & veggies had absolutely no flavoring. I contacted the manager (Dan) and he was so incredibly rude after my takeout order was made wrong. He was unapologetic and told me that one sometimes depending on who the chef is the food will taste different. He also made an analogy that if you go to a hair salon, if you have a different hairdresser they might cut your hair a little differently. This was not a matter of the dinner being ex: too garlicky, the food was not seasoned at all. I asked for a refund and he just flat out said "no". I used to eat here all the time but after this experience I will never go back there. During a time when restaurants are shutting back down, you would think that they would want to retain business. Walked in on a not so busy Monday . Ordered orange salmon sushi ...food came in fast ...we looked at our plates, called the waitress and asked if we could cancel our order. SIMPLE REASON : slimy stinky salmon,, uncooked rice. We did not feel like making a scene, because there wee other customers in the restaurant. We said we would pay however much they would charge us. Atmosphere and sushi are both just okay. I ordered the sushi lunch, which is Chef's choice. I got a half cucumber roll, half tuna roll, and some individual pieces, none of which were popping with freshness. There was a group of local Japanese businessmen there for lunch though, which lead me to believe it has something quality to offer. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. Got sushi here once, I couldn't finish it. I thought, maybe my stomach wasn't agreeing with me that day. Tried it again very recently. Best quality sushi you will find. Make sure you ask for their current list of fish as they often have some great finds that aren't on the menu. Very traditional Japanese cuisine. I was asking the hostess a question about soup or salad and the manager couldn't stop pacing around me as if I was going to check if they were serving chicken or rat. This place is amazing for the price - and very good overall. The toro (fat tuna belly) sashimi was some of the best I've ever had in my life. At $7 a piece - it was reasonably priced too. I would go back anytime just for that. Other sashimi was very good too - other than the Spanish Mackerel, which I sent back. Perhaps it was an off night for the Spanish Mackerel. Shave one star for the Mackerel, but more for the fact they charged me for it even though it wasn't good. No drama about that - and I didn't ask them to take it off the bill - it's just that they didn't offer and I thought that not offering reflected badly on their commitment to customer satisfaction. Especially since we we spending over $100 on dinner. Oh well. It's the little things that make the difference I suppose. read more

Sukiyaki had thin slices of top quality beef, great veges and broth. Negamaki appetizer used the same great beef and sauce superb. Chicken katsu was perfectly fried with another great sauce. I believe this is actually the oldest restaurant in Rockland County. The fish however, is the freshest. I've been eating at Koto for decades, been at every location they've been at, most recently and previously on Lafayette Avenue, and before on nearby side streets (Park Avenue was the first I think). The sushi chef / owner (co-owner with his wife who works there) rivals anyone in Manhattan where I live. I'll happily eat here over any regular sushi place in NYC. But don't let sushi be your limitation, the steaks with the hottest crispest vegetables on the side, soba noodles, and other entrees have been a hit with us forever. read more

The sushi here is not quite as good as I remember, so I can't really recommend it. When I can recommend are any of the noodle dishes. The Nabiyaki udon in particular is excellent, and the pieces of tempura are always fresh and never soggy. It is run by a small staff of Japanese servers, and they are absolutely meticulous about the cleanliness and quality of service provided to guests. The matcha/sencha green tea is excellent. Prices range from moderate to expensive, and the restaurant is quite small. All in all a solid choice for Japanese food if you are in Suffern. read more

Koto is a VERY traditional Japanese style restaurant. A lot of people seem to be complaining about the rolls. . . The chef is a traditional fish enthusiast. . . If you ask him what the freshest fish are he'll let you know, and if you tell him how adventurous you are he is happy to recommend sushi. It is not a "fusion" style restaurant with a large roll menu, but the actual sushi and sashimi are the best around. The cooked food is also very good. I particularly like a dish called "kushi katsu" which is deep fried pork with scallions and a wonderful dark sauce and mayonaise. "Ebi katsu" is the same idea with shrimp. The "Koto Sizzling Steak" is also off the charts. If you're looking for "lots of rolls" its probably not the best spot for you, but if you like real sushi and sashimi and cooked Japanese food then you can't go wrong. read more
