You can't just slap a Japanese city on the store front and call it Japanese. This more Chinese? Not sure, but definitely not Japanese(I would know the difference as I am Japanese and lived in Japan) there is no Miso soup(a staple) on the menu, the rice is more Chinese grain than Japanese. I ordered teriyaki chicken with mixed vegetables and basically, their idea of fried rice is a brown tinted rice. Food is edible, but not Japanese. The servers are excellent though! read more

Stopped by after reading mostly positive reviews on Yelp. I must say, I was very disappointed in this place. Walked in at 5PM the guy behind the register said sit where ever. The server dropped a menu and immediately said "are you ready" even before I looked at the menu. I ordered Steak and Shrimp for $14.99. First came a warm salad with what I believe to be warm thousand Island dressing and a bowl of broth. The Steak and Shrimp came out after about 10 minutes. You get two big scoops of rice, with a bunch of carrots. But as for steak and shrimp, that was a different story. The shrimp was the most tiny little shrimp I have ever saw. They gave me only about 6 -7 of those. The steak was equally pathetic, tiny little slices and very little. Overall, I feel ripped off for the price. I am a guest at the Hampton Inn and wanted to walk to dinner, which limited my options. The front desk agent said that Kyoto was good, but not too flashy. The restaurant is family operated and extremely clean. There are about 30 tables and 10 booths, so when I walked in, it seemed empty in comparison to other restaurants. Nonetheless, I stayed. My friendly waiter was quick to offer a beverage and the menu. The menu is simple, without any fancy combination plates, which appears to work for the regular customers. (Teriyaki or Hibachi? Mixed vegetables, just mushrooms or just broccoli?) At any given time, there were at least 15 people being served- many young families, older couples, and young men looking for a carb-load, lol. I ordered the teriyaki chicken with scallops, served with mixed vegetables, fried rice, and steamed carrots. The entree came with soup and lettuce salad. Both were served quickly and were well prepared - again, not fancy, but fresh. My entree was delicious and promptly delivered. The vegetables were freshly cooked and crisp. The chicken was delicious and prepared in small pieces- and the side order of yum yum sauce was great for dipping. The scallops were seared well and were not tough. Be aware that they serve two scoops of fried rice with each order, so if you want rice, you got it! If you are watching your carbs, you may want to ask for one scoop. As I finished my meal, I read a book and enjoyed hot tea. There were at least 3 carryout orders picked up, so Kyoto has a local following. They do not serve alcohol but the hot tea is good. We visited this place this evening, because we stopped in town as a midway point for our trip back to Georgia. We decided to visit this restaurant due to the only other review that was available, which gave it four stars and spoke of it highly. I would have to agree with the previous reviewer in that this restaurant is very simple, yet very efficient, friendly, and tasty! All of the food is very reasonably priced for a hibachi restaurant, and while there is no "show," there's good value for your money. this place is great for Japanese food in Va. I've eaten here twice and every time the food is very good and large ration of food for the price your paying for it. This restaurant doesn't have a lot to choose from on its menu which is good because ive been in many places where the menu is packed and could spend hours trying to figure out what i want to eat and the price for most of there items is under 10 dollars the combinations and the shrimp is the only area where they go over 10 dollars so all and all a really good place to get Japanese. read more

The food was good but really small portion sizes for the price. We both ordered the steak & chicken combination. It came with a very small side salad and soup. I believe with the lack of actual meat they more then enough made up with rice. My to-go box was literally just filled with rice. So I have been eating here for years, it's not bad. Not the best Japanese ever, but not bad. Today, I am take out. Didn't check it there. My order was supposed to have mixed vegetables. The "mix" was a ton of Zucchini squash, Onions, 3 pieces of broccoli, and 2 mushrooms. I expect better from a mix. So I called to complain. Worker answered the phone, said I could bring it back. I asked if he was paying for the gas as I'm 15 miles away, he got the owner who was beyond rude. His ONLY offer was a refund, which I asked again if he was paying for the gas, of course not. I explained he was asking me to spend more money to correct what he did poorly. This is a small community, I'm so glad he's business is booming to the point he can literally say "you're the only one complaining, if you don't like it don't come back" instead of offering a free meal for this screw up. Never again will I or my family spend our hard earned money on such a rude and ungrateful business. As I said to him, Shame on them. read more
