We have stopped here before, so I thought this 3rd visit would be good. It was meh. I mean the food was ok. We chose the buffet because they were on a limited holiday/weekend menu. It wasn't visually appealing. Some items were in need of replenishing, which they did later. Service was sub-par. The hostess seemed indifferent and took us to the far end of the restaurant. The whole place was cold. I had to go back out to the car and get my jacket. I observed other customers putting on jackets or hoodies. I had the impression our server was new. She did ok, but we had to flag her down to get a coffee refill. We were looking forward to finishing our meal with a dish of the cobbler from the buffet topped off with a bit of the soft serve we had observed another customer getting from the machine earlier. When we went to the machine they had taped a piece of notebook paper to the front with a handwritten "sorry, machine is being cleaned." I mean who cleans the machine during dinner hours? Kind of like a Deep Southern low-end Dennys or Sizzlers. Playing up their connection to fiddle players and bluegrass but the food was not that great, our waitress seemed strung out and was kind of a mess and the crowd (which at first was amusing) became annoying and creepy as we were the only folks in the place without coveralls and camo and the locals would not stop starring at us. Strange for a place designed to capitalize on tourists and in a tourist location. You'd think they'd never seen anyone from out of town or without camo or overalls. I'm not knocking that, I wear both when I work in the yard or go shooting, but outside of us, everyone else was, and it seemed out of balance with the attempt at touristy music-themed decore and still that's ok. wow, what can I say. I really wanted to like this place, decor is interesting, it's clean and has live music but I just can't. Four of us sit down to dinner at 5:30, food didn't come out until almost 7. Both orders of pulled pork were cold to the touch and the brisket (see picture) had more fat than meat, and looked like it had been cooked to death in its own grease. Also, no hush puppies. In fairness, our waitress was extremely apologetic and took the three entrées off the bill. Manager never showed up despite the request. On the way out, you could see the staff stacked up in the kitchen apparently all waiting on things that may or may not ever come out ... This appears to be the hotspot of Hillsville Virginia. When we walked in we were the only customers there. By the time we finished the place was filling up. And for good reason!! There's some real southern cooking on this menu. The turnip greens, real macaroni and cheese, cabbage with ham! Meatloaf, beef liver, all sorts of deliciousness. I chose the buffet, because I couldn't decide what I wanted... I ate it all, from the salad and all the toppings, to the fried fish to the fried apples. Meh. I'd dined at Shoney's before and was hesitant on trying out Fiddler's until a little time had passed after the rebranding. I was kind of surprised to walk in and see that not much AT ALL has changed. New tabletops, a few wall murals, and a different name are all that really set them apart from the original Shoney's. That being said, the menu was impressive and had lots to offer. They have gluten free sandwich and pasta options, along with traditional southern cooking. The sidewinder fries were the best thing we ate- a thick cut French fry swirled and deep fried, super good. I ordered the blackened chicken dinner with baked apples and fries. The blackened chicken was seasoned well, but I had eaten a few bites before I noticed that the chicken was not cooked all the way through... the baked apples were fresh apple slices but I'm pretty sure I was served their apple pie filling in a dish lol. It was thicker and more gelatinous than traditional baked apples. Honestly, I won't be back. Everything was okay and they're just too pricey for what you receive. read more

We had a large crowd on a Friday night at a family reunion and the Resturant really helped see us and provided us a great place to enjoy a family dinner. I ordered a Philly steak and cheese sandwich and it was surprisingly awesome. They had an amazing dinner and salad bar, which looked really great as well. Travelling along , we saw the sign for Fiddlers restaurant & decided to stop. I'm so glad we did. We were warmly welcomed along with our rescue pup . We all enjoyed a delicious meal. We checked out the buffet which looked really good but decided, since we still had over 8 hours of driving to go, to go with less. I tried the fried fish with greens and fried corn. Our waitress was super pleasant and noticeably attentive to all the other patrons, and the lady attending to the buffet kept the area spotlessly clean and items freshly rotated. Baked beans were spilling over and tasted sour, but not because of the vinegar. Ran to the car while hubby settled the bill. Left a good tip because the waitress was nice. Fiddlers was overall ok, But it was pretty expensive for a random restaurant Virginia. Me and my 4 children had to wait about 10 minute before getting seated. It wasn't even crowded but there was a lack of employees which made the wait take longer. The buffet part was what made it expensive most of food was flavorless an the salad tasted worse then my son Tony's baby food that he launched 5 feet into the air and landed on my cheek. Great service! Had lunch here. I noticed they had pimento cheese but no pimento cheese sandwich. They made me a grilled sourdough pimento cheese. It was delicious. We all enjoyed our meals. How this place ever got only one star is a mystery to me?!! The place is clean and welcoming and very old timey. Cashel, our server, was courteous and brought our BBQ sandwich and burger in no time at all along with some of the best cole slaw I've had in a long time. We went to Fiddler's for Mother's day and I was disappointed that nothing except the buffet was available. Since I'm in my nineties and eat very little, I asked if there was a senior price but was told that everyone would be charged $16.99. I really would have liked a sandwich or other small meal but I reluctantly ate from the buffet. The turkey was shredded not sliced and it was cold--not even lukewarm. The mashed potatoes were also cold and so was the gravy. Overall, this was an overpriced and mediocre meal. As far as the temperatures of the "supposedly hot" foods on the buffet; the food was so cool that it may have been a health risk. Had the Health Department monitored this buffet it definitely would have failed inspection. This was a very disappointing Mother's Day meal. read more
