Delicious! Reasonably priced and fresh fish! We decided to sit in their tatami room. The tatami room is a Japanese style area where you take off shoes and sit on floor with legs crossed. There are also regular tables of course. We ordered cold sake, and baked mussels for appetizer. The Hawaiian roll was delicious and they also have great hand rolls and maki rolls. This place is great for just two or larger parties, I have been here multiple times with different groups. If you have a larger group there's fun floor sitting private rooms for dining as well as regular booths. The sushi is really good and fresh every time I've been, the service is a little slow but the food makes up for it. The pricing is decent for sushi and the fish is worth it. We randomly chose Kyoto for lunch on a Saturday while staying in SB for the weekend. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered, chirashi, hamachi sashimi, uni, ikura with quail eggs and boiled squid. The chirashi came with soup and salad. Some of the fish were not too fresh. Miso soup was very good. Hamachi sashimi, uni and ikura with quail eggs were very fresh. Boiled squid with vinegar hot sauce, which came with rice, small salad, and miso soup, was okay. Excellent service. read more

This place really does give you bang for your buck! I ordered the Mexican roll and chicken teriyaki lunch which includes a salad, rice, and miso soup all for $12 and change! Can't get any better than that here in SB!! What I love about the Mexican roll is that you get 8 big slices! They do not skimp on size that's for sure. This roll is wrapped in tempura which gives it a nice crunch. I highly recommend this place for lunch. read more

I came here on Monday night after the long weekend for some late night sushi. I arrived a little after 9pm but got great service and great sushi even for being so late! I started with miso soup and egg rolls, which were both very hot but delicious. If you like creative sushi rolls, then this is the place to go! They have a number of different speciality rolls filled with tuna, shrimp, crab and various other things. They also top all of their rolls with tuna, salmon, sauces and other things. I ordered the 007 Roll and the Heaven Roll which both were really good! The 007 Roll just had spicy tuna and avocado in the roll, but was topped with salmon, spicy mayo and more tuna! Yummy :) The Heaven Roll had shrimp tempura, cucumber, and spicy tuna but was topped with albacore, avocado, and a spicy special sauce. I will be coming back here again soon to try some of the other specialty rolls that they have! read more

I called for pickup 4 piece yellowtail, 2 piece ikura, and 1 yuki deluxe roll. I was told it'd be ready in 10 min. I actually ended up having to wait 40 min after I arrived. I got home ready to finally eat. 2 of the yellowtail pieces had a solid piece of bone in them. Another one had fish scales on stuck on it. At first, they had that tap water ice cube taste, then it ended with a mildly bitter fishy aftertaste. Ikura is usually is a bit salty, but this was way over the top that I don't think anyone could say this is normal. The roll was decent, but tasted mainly just sweet soy sauce which covered everything generously. It is cheaper than the other sushi places in the area and I wished I could have liked this place, but unfortunately my experience was pretty bad. read more

Old school SB Japanese with mediocre food. The decor reminiscent of Japanese mountain hut. Two tatami rooms. Small sushi bar near entrance where you can sit with the chefs. Service is competent, a team approach seemed to be in place the last time I went. The best thing I've had is the grilled beef short ribs that come with onions, rice, soup. Combo platters are decent. Sushi is just okay. While this review may not rave about Kyoto there's something about the place that'll have me returning. read more

Come here if you're looking for a special, unique experience. I've been able to celebrate a few birthday dinners at this fun little restaurant. The venue is long and narrow, maybe a little awkward if it's full of patrons. However, it stands out from the competition as it offers tatami room dining. Tatami room? Yes, those traditional rooms where you dine at a low table sitting cross-legged on the floor, separated from the main dining room by a shoji screen. There's really nothing else like it in town and it makes for a great time. Service is pretty good and the restaurant is usually staffed well. I love their bento box entrees, and their salmon crunch roll is one of the best out there. They offer a variety of interesting rolls, and each I've tried has been amazing. I hope to be back soon for another tatami room experience. read more

I wish I had read the reviews before ordering almost $100 worth of food from this place. The sushi had hard pieces of what I'm assuming was either cartilage or bone in it, the seaweed salad also had some hard pieces in it, the miso soup was cold and the amount of food you got for the amount they're charging absolutely wasn't worth it. I have been going to this restaurant for 20+ years, the food is always good (and I have eaten at many Japanese restaurants). On weekend nights it can be very busy and have lots of takeout orders. The aftermath of the pandemic was difficult for restaurants to maintain wait staff (hence some of the reviews), but my most recent dine in experience was excellent, with a great waitress. The owners are very friendly and greet you with a smile. The ambiance is not "posh" but homey. If you are looking for the "posh" experience then this won't be your restaurant. It is a comfortable place to go eat, even with kids. I've never experienced flies as others have stated, and always had clean delicious food. read more

The 2 stars are just because they were nice enough to serve us as they were closing up. While the people here are nice, the food is not... Worst nightmare come true... there was hair in the food! They did not handle it well. They took that dish off the bill which is nice, but really who else is going to enjoy their dish knowing there might be more hair around. So all 5 of us were turned off to the food. Before the hair was found, the food was pretty mediocre. Good for substance but not really for enjoyment. I've had much much better. I got the combo with salmon teriyaki which came with salad, miso soup, rice, shrimp and veggie tempura and 6 piece California roll. It was a good amount of food but likebi said before, mediocre. I popped into Kyoto a few weeks ago with a friend and they were pretty busy. They seem to have an enormous pick-up business - so much so that the sushi bar is completely unavailable to sit at and is dominated by bags and to go orders. This is a bummer because it's such a great spot to sit and watch the chefs work. We were seated in the back at an uncomfortable table right near the rest room and it was unpleasant; it also didn't seem clean and updated - very tired - especially with the sushi bar being overrun by the take-out business. It was a bit uncomfortable and just didn't seem like the best choice for us so we moved on. This particular rating is based only on the atmosphere/ambience so I haven't had the food in a few months. The food is mid-range and what I would expect from an average sushi bar. I think basic expectations are fulfilled. But if you're looking for that great sushi bar experience that is clean, crisp and continuous I would look elsewhere. We had to wait about 10 minutes (this is no exaggeration) while the hostess was on the phone as well. I think they are just managing way too many to go orders to focus properly on their clientele which may need in-person service. read more

This sushi restaurant has a lot of variety and has a good lunch menu. I got the combination sushi for dinner which was about $20. I enjoy their lunches because you can get a good meal for $10. For that price you get rice, two choices, salad, miso soup so the amount is great for the price. Compared to Arigato the price is cheaper but the quality might be a little less. I don't think it's worth going to Arigato, but I enjoy Kyoto because overall they meet the expectation of taste, price, and quality. They also have private rooms where you can sit down and enjoy a more traditional meal. Alex is a great manager who helps run the store. Overall, I think sushi is SB is decent it's not the best compared to other cities. read more

Wow. The portions here were just enormous. When you get sushi where the fish portion is four times as big as the rice, we're onto something here. The Bento boxes were ridiculous. You could make a meal out of the Tempura alone. Now, the bad. Clean up the bathroom and the dining area. Dusting off the windows and remodeling the bathroom may not seem like a big deal- but they are. The dining experience includes having the place not look like it was taken out of lockdown yesterday.
