Having heard really fantastic things about the Lark, I was very eager to try it during my Santa Barbara visit. The salad was HUGE, definitely meant to share although I ended up cleaning it up. I really like the concept of hyper-local where even the fisherman gets a shoutout by name on the menu, but I think the presentation and execution fell flat. I'm not sure if a larger group or different menu items would have landed differently but my fish ended up a bit rubbery and overcooked. The other dishes were very underwhelming, and it was really tough to get the attention of my server. When it came time to pay, they offered me a pen which didn't work, then when I asked for another one, it didn't work, and finally I asked a bus boy who gave me 5 pens which 4/5 didn't work. Sad that this place has been around for over a decade and we just ate here, last night. Glad that we found it and will return. JJ was our server and he did a great job of moderating how much we ordered and bringing out the plates in good combinations. All the plates are to be shared and our party of 4 enjoyed them all. We were seated outside. It was a nice, the sun only hitting 1 person for a few minutes before it moved far enough for us all to be in the shade. The menu served as sun protection for that time. Cantaloupe was ripe and the tajin and lime gave it a delicious new flavor profile. We overheard the table next to us raving about the heirloom tomato panzanella, so, we ordered it too. The ricotta made this dish. Totally understood what the other table was talking about and we were thankful to overhear them. The Lark's Classic Wedge was the best wedge I have ever had. Sure, I don't eat as many salads as I should but I can appreciate the difference between bacon and the crispy pork belly served here. The line caught crude was ahi. This came out first and we devoured it. The picture will tell you all the words I can't put together right now. New Orleans Shrimp Toast was the only "hot dish" we had. I think we had come in for drinks at the bar a while ago. This time we made a last minute late night reservation through sapphire reserve access. The oasis like patio was lively for such late night hour. It took a while for someone to come by take our drink orders. But once our waitress arrived the service was very good from beginning to the end. We decided on a Mezcal specialty cocktail and hubby's usual Vesper martini. For food we had dip and chips, veggie pasta, crispy duck and cast iron steak. The dill pickle popcorns were so yummy. I liked the flavorful pasta the most and the duck was very delicious as well. The servers were great but the food had came in batches of 2 plates for every 20 minutes so for a party of 6, it was a bit lackluster especially when the protein that we had ordered came in over an hour after we had placed our order. Loved the vibes here! All of the dishes we had here were a hit! They start you off with some complimentary Dill Pickle Popcorn. It's seasoned with allspice, turmeric, garlic, and chili flakes. A fun little appetizer to get your tastebuds ready! Dishes are meant to be shared, and four was a perfect amount of two people. We got the "Tutti Frutti Farms" Roasted Beet Salad. It had strawberries, whipped goat ricotta, salted pistachio, and nastrurtium. Such gorgeous presentation, and a nice bright and fresh dish to begin the meal. Next we had the Jidori Chicken Liver Mousse. Loved this! It had roasted blueberries, hazelnut praline, lemon thyme, and grilled sourdough. Such a perfect combination of flavors and textures! We also had Crispy Brussel Sprouts. These were probably some of the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had! The savory sesame and garum paired with sweetness from the dates, a crunch from the puffed wild rice, and some tartness from the lime were incredible together! Another amazing dish! Lastly, we had the Handmade Rigatoni Pasta. It had sugar snap peas, maitake mushrooms, piedmont white truffle butter, parmesan, and pea tendrils. While this dish was good, it did feel a little more ordinary than the other three dishes we had. Would recommend the Roasted Beet Salad, Chicken Liver Mousse, and Brussels Sprouts first! Fantastic birthday dinner for two of my friends on a Saturday night. The stand outs were the rosemary cornbread (MUST order) and the creekstone steak (halal!). We also tried the beet salad and a seasonal pasta that were great too. The chocolate pot de crème for dessert was just ok though, as it was hard to get to all the layers in the deep glass it was served in. Portions were generous and we left stuffed with leftovers to take home. They also have a great selection of mocktails, we tried several but preferred the fruitier ones. Service was the right amount of attentive. Beautiful outdoor seating to enjoy the SB weather or a cool vintage vibe inside with the converted train car booths. Absolutely stunning dinner at The Lark last night on our only night in Santa Barbara and I feel glad to say we picked the right restaurant! The place was full, including indoor and outdoor seating, great ambience and light level, and lovely string lights above the seating outdoors. To start they bring over a delectable dill popcorn which was a rich, salty, dill and butter creation. Totally set a fun tone for the meal. Then we had the crispy Brussels sprouts (ORDER THESE!!!) they were divine, the sesame and lime combination was reminiscent of a great pad Thai, with the perfect amount of sauce and tiny bites of figs which all worked together in a way I wouldn't have expected. For the mains we had the shrimp toast and the pork ribs, both fantastic both well portioned and both 10/10s. Pork ribs fell off the bone easily and were spicy and tangy without overdoing flavor and the shrimp toast tasted like a great gumbo sauce and the shrimps were big! The food was so delicious the halibut on the specials was quite literally the most delicious fish I've ever tasted!! If it's available get it! We are at the Lark tonight and had a good experience. It's a fairly casual and comfortable restaurant. We were greeted and seated immediately. I was glad we made reservations. The restaurant was busy. Our server was great. She introduced herself (Giana I believe she said) and helped us understand that the intent of the menu and dining approach is a sharing format. The plates and portion sizes vary depending upon the item. Cocktails: The Lark has a very interesting (in a good way) cocktail menu. Our party tried 5 different cocktails. Everyone loved their drink and commented on how well made they were. Food: The restaurant provides complimentary dill pickle popcorn (10/5) as a snack to get your appetite moving. This unique popcorn flavor was one of the best things I had all night. Everyone in our party agreed. We ordered 40% of the menu. The standouts were the fried chicken (5/5), the duck confit (5/5), and the pork ribs (4/5). Dessert: The chocolate pot-a-crème with banana cream (5/5) and donut holes (5/5) were both very tasty. We had a real good experience at the Lark. My only comment as a first timer was gauging how much food to order. Which is odd because of our advanced reservation. Once she did know she brought out a small birthday dessert. Water refills weren't offered regularly, and we had to flag someone down for additional drinks. There also wasn't much explanation of the dishes as they were brought out, so we found ourselves guessing what each item was based on the paper menu left at our tables. One point of confusion was the billing process. We were asked to put a card on file ahead of time, with the understanding that it would be charged at the end of the meal and that gratuity would be included for a large party. However, neither happened, which left us a bit unsure about how to handle the final payment and tip. Overall, it was a decent experience, and we made the most of the evening thanks to the great company and atmosphere. Things started off strong--our drinks and appetizers came out promptly and were enjoyable. However, the timing for the entrees really took away from the experience. Came here on a Sunday for brunch with no reservations and got seated right away. A friend had highly recommended this place. The service is on point! The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the egg is my shakshuka was still raw (whites were still clear). We were so hungry, I just took it out and didn't mention it to the server. Came here to say with reservations to celebrate our friend during her bachelorette and we were taken to the back near the trash cans (I think the wine bar/ bakery). We had little to no service, had to flag someone down or get extra napkins ourselves, it took forever to get our entrees- and when we checked in with the waitress as she zipped by- we were met with a snarky its coming. Two of us got duck leg confit, which was crispy and it tasted good and the rest of the party got their pappardelle pasta which was kind of heavy and dry. Our 25th wedding anniversary is coming up. We were excited to dine at the Lark after looking at the menu; the initial dill pickle popcorn (which I thought was going to be lame) was excellent, and the staff reseated us when I asked that we sit outdoors because the noise of dining inside would be too much for my wife's hearing. Likewise, when our waitress turned on the space heater for a couple next to us, she did hear us and turn it down when it was pretty warm. I know this makes me sound like a complainer, but I was nice and the waitress was too and we moved on to some very picturesque oysters and epically tasty chicken liver mousse. The mousse was a bit more heavy, like pate, but I ain't complaining-- it was delicious with the just right amount of sweet. Next was an awesome wedge salad that didn't scrimp on blue cheese or perfectly fried pork belly. Awesome. What happened next was puzzling, though... we waited maybe 20 or 30 min for our ribs while other patrons who had sat after us finished and left. Eventually I went looking for our waitress and, of course, she was on her way with our ribs just when my wife and I had decided we wanted to get the check and leave. Waitress quickly agreed, gave us the ribs on the house, and the check came and went without a hitch. Like the red card in tonight's World Cup game (USA vs Bosnia/herzegovina), it just didn't seem that intentional or worthy of alsuch a major penalty. The owner company owns loquita (which I love) and we're going there tomorrow night. I would easily give the Lark a second chance given the quality of their food and service in spite of the delay noted above, and would recommend you do so, too. read more
