They are dropped off and picked up reliably, which is so helpful when you live in a city and would otherwise have to travel to get to a car rental office. I had an incredible experience with Kyte - the drop off was seamless, the car was brand new, and it was so easy to extend and adjust my trip. Not only that, the prices are super comparable to other rental sites and they drop off and pick up the car. The convenience would have been worth the extra charge, but it's already baked into the rental fee! Kyte has the potential to be great. Very competitive prices often half of what you see on more mainstream services like Hertz, and they deliver and pick up straight to/from your door which makes it so much easier to rent a car in Manhattan. I've used the service twice now. Both times the car delivery and pickup were on time. So far, if it were just everything I wrote above, Kyte would easily get my 5 star review. However... The first time I rented, I returned the car without issues, but was notified the next day by Kyte that there was a scratch on the side of the car that was not there before. I was 99% sure the scratch happened after I returned the car (and caused by the surfer returning the car), but it took a lot of arguing back and forth with pictures before Kyte let it go based on the poor image quality of the pictures Kyte took themselves. I know this may be common sense to some, but always make sure you take your own *high quality* pictures of the car when returning so you don't screwed over by any accidents caused by the Kyte surfer that they will claim you were responsible for. This is especially specific to Kyte since there may be an appreciable distance the surfer has to drive to return the car compared to a regular car rental company. The second time I rented, I had to cancel my reservation shortly after it started. Everything went fairly smoothly and I was promised a refund of most of the cost (reasonable, since the part I still had to pay went towards paying the Kyte surfers who delivered/picked up the car). I was supposed to be refunded to my card, but Kyte instead gave me a Kyte credit instead of the originally promised refund. I had to send another couple messages back/forth with Kyte before they refunded it to my card as a "one time courtesy". It almost feels like Kyte was trying to bully me into accepting the credit instead of the refund as was promised to me both on the website and by a customer service agent. In short, Kyte again has the potential to be a great business but because of my above experience I cannot recommend Kyte unless it's a last resort option. Would rather go back to Hertz again even if it means trekking across the city to a pickup location, as I'm not sure what sort of headache will come up the third time I rent from Kyte. EDIT: In response to Emily -- thanks for the clarification. Some clearer communication would be great. The customer service person I chatted with (Maj) specifically confirmed I'd be refunded to my card and never mentioned the Kyte credit refund policy. At least now I'll know for the future. Bad enough experience to actually post a full on review. And to file complaint with consumer affairs and BBB. Rented in Miami for a few R&R days after a cruise. Lowest price around. Pickup was seamless. Surfer came on time, 5 min of pics taken, docs signed and car is mine. New nissan sentra, clean. Great start. I thought wow. Come time for drop off. Complete disaster. Drop off address all wrong. It was a parking lot at airport train station. Address brought me to middle of street on opposite side, which sounds ok if not for the major 14 lane highway in the middle. Making it impossible to just u-turn unto the other side. We came 30 min early for our drop off. Spent almost an hour circling the highway and the streets to try and get on the correct side of the air train station road for drop off. Got dangerously close to missing our flight. Customer service and surfer were useless in clarifying how to get to drop off. Finally after kind of figuring out how to get to drop point, with still violating traffic laws by backing up on a one way road to get into the air train station, because otherwise bye bye our flight, we gave the car to the surfer. Who was tatted up with not an empty skin area left. Not judging but sure didn't look like a kyte employee, which would have helped as a beacon of where we needed to go. Later on I get hit with $25 late fee. They claimed I was 53 min late. My GPS showed more like 30 min late. Screenshots for proof included. That goes back to the surfer; me wondering how promptly did he update the system for confirmed drop off. Not too mention a wrong return address. After a bunch of emails and chats back and forth, Kyte basically said forget you, we got our money (I'm paraphrasing). Even better, my banks credit card said they won't dispute the late fee, because it applies because I was late. It's up to merchants discretion. No one cares about wrong address. My bank did offer a credit for the fee though given it's small amount and my long time business. So in the end, don't bother with them. For their lower price you'll get a major headache and other possible issues down the road that'll cost you thrice just in terms of $, and more in stress. read more

Very frustrating experience with this company. After I completed my car rental, I started receiving several miscellaneous charges. Due to traffic, I informed Kyte that I might be running late for my return time. Even though I arrived 10 minutes after the previous time, they had the nerve to charge me a $25 late fee, which I was never informed of prior to. I was also charged for gas even though Kyte promotes "we got you covered on gas." Very misleading. A month later, they charged me for a toll that never existed. The customer service is useless. By far the worst rental company I have ever used. I booked an SUV 2 weeks before the rental date. An hour prior to delivery, they call to tell me they will bring a Sedan instead. I tell them I need to transport a bike, so need an SUV. They say they will find one, but might be a little late. After several more texts back and forth, where they reassure me they are picking up the vehicle to deliver it, they CANCEL MY RESERVATION AN HOUR AFTER IT AAS SUPPOSED TO BE DELIVERED. Leaving me with no car and basically no time to find an alternative to get to the race I was participating in. I have been renting a car from Kyte for several months. It has been a great experience. The Kyte Surfer always arrives on time both for delivery and for pick up. The car is always very clean. The Surfer is always very pleasant. I had to pay extra one time. I forgot that the car was going to be picked up and the Surfer did not call me. I didn't check my phone for texts.When I realized the car had not been picked up it was too late, the Surfer had left. I had to pay extra because the car could not be picked up until the next morning. Since then the Surfer always calls upon arrival to the building. I do not like the app. It does not always work well. I do not like to use the help feature. I do not like to communicate with a robot however whenever I have reached a real human agent it worked well even though I had to wait a few minutes between my question and the response. I highly recommend Kyte, it is so much more convenient than a conventional rental agency where you have to wait on line to get your car. read more

I just rented my first time from Kyte in Manhattan. The car rental went great. It was 1/2 the price of Hertz. Car was in excellent condition. The drop-off and pick-up were very timely (only weird thing was that the guy who came to pickup the car had no ID that he worked for Kyte). They say that you don't need to fill the gas and they will apply the market rate -- but there gas cost was $5.20 vs the $3.85 at a station. From the point the rental period is near, to after the return, they communicate well by text. Although, It was also hard to get a live customer service rep on the phone to field a question. Overall, I will definitely use Kyte the next time I need to rent a car. read more

All went fine with the hand off until we started to check the car to start our trip..... aC did not work on an 80 degree weather & CarPlay did not work which we are relying for navigation. We had a really frustrating time with this service. It really feels like they are a startup that has a lot of kinks to still work out, from late drop offs to tons of miscommunications (lots of errant "Your car is arriving soon!" type notifications after we already got the car...) and no flexibility with the drop off time- you have 5 minutes after your scheduled drop off, that's it. And if you're early, too bad I guess? A nightmare if you're dealing with the lack of street parking in NYC. Customer service was really poor and wouldn't offer us anything for the issues they were having, which included a late drop off and a damaged vehicle. They also quoted us a "market rate" on gas that was $2 higher than the price of gas at the station 4 blocks from us, and insisted that was just what gas costs (it doesn't? if there's an extra surchargee for having Kyte fill it up or something, then just say that?) I'd only recommend if you're really flexible with your pick up time and very sure you can be exactly on time with your drop off. Otherwise, just rent a car from any regular rental service with a city location for the same price and no weird start-up vibes. read more

Beware of this new rental car app. It sounds great. Relatively low price for a rental car brought to your door. The reality is not so great. The car is brought to you by a Kyte "surfer". They expect to be tipped. The mileage is limited unless you add on an "unlimited mileage" package. If you do rent with Kyte make sure you inspect the car very carefully. I was charged $100 for a cleaning fee based on pet fur on the back seat. I never had a pet in the car. But it was impossible to get this resolved with their customer service email and chat service. After VERY long waits trying to get through I just gave up and paid the fee. But when the final cost of the car for the day came out (over $200), it would have been less expensive to just go to Avis or Hertz. read more

This is my first time renting from Kyte and I had a pleasant experience. Due to my experience I'm considering working for them part-time.

By far one of the worst car rental experiences I've ever had. Initial drop off of the car was fine, no issues there. When picking up the car, my "Surfer" was over an hour late. I live on a busy street in Manhattan so an hour late basically meant driving in circles so I don't get a parking ticket for illegally parking. Not something you want to deal with after a 6 hour drive. In addition to this, they tried to charge me a $25 late fee when my "Surfer" was the one running late. Fast forward to 2 days later I get a $250 charge for "dog hair" in the car. I understand paying a cleaning fee within reason but I find it very hard to believe that it costs that much to vacuum dog hair off of fabric seats. Kyte markets themselves as an affordable, easy solution for car rentals delivered to your doorstep but provided neither of those services. Not only did the service come late to retrieve the car, my credit card was charged without my authorization for a ludicrous cleaning fee. What would be affordable is marketed under false pretenses with predatory charges sneaked into the contract that targets consumers. I will never be using this service again, not worth the shady antics. read more
