Kafka-esque nightmare! Kyte is great until it's not. I used to love them. This time, we didn't add an additional driver 2 hours before the car arrived--we didn't realize this was a rule and hadn't had trouble with it before. But, the guy who delivered the car said that wasn't a problem and we could still do it through customer service. That turned out not to be true. I spent all afternoon texting with Kyte trying to sort it out. At first they insisted there was nothing they could do to add a driver, which turned out not to be true. And they said there was no one else available to help with this, which also wasn't true. Finally a different--much more helpful--agent told us we had to return the car we already had and get a new one with the additional driver on the new contract. This involved waiting almost 5 extra hours. They took away the perfectly good old car and made us wait for a new car, when there was nothing wrong with the old car except the contract! Then the surfer for the new car was late on top of that! Totally insane! We didn't have to pay extra, which was great, but our whole trip was delayed 5 hours and I spent all afternoon texting with customer service, just because it their f--ed up bureaucracy! read more

I am a great admirer of the Kyte model and quite happy with the service I have received over the past year (several rentals). I think that the tech piece will improve over time as well as the vehicle selection (more larger vehicles needed), but I really have no complaints. read more

Very convenient and easy to have the car brought to me. My surfer was super helpful and nice. He went helped me remove my daughters car seat from the car (I tried for a good hour but it somehow got stuck) he was able to remove it after a good 5 mins of tugging and pulling on it. I will definitely be using kyte again. side note: I did get my own gas at the end and opted not to have them refill because they wanted to charge me 2 dollars extra a gallon to fill up (they say they charge you the current gas rate but that's very false) read more

Kyte is a people-free way to rent a car. That is fine as long as there are no problems. But if there are problems, it is extremely frustrating to deal with. For example, Kyte gives you a time window when to pick up and return the car. If your plane is late or you want to return it early - good luck. If you follow their rules, the computerized system can still cause problems - for example if you rent a car and don't send in your photo ID a day or two before the stated deadline they just ban you. I.e. the computer system just bans you. And good luck finding a person to talk to. read more

I arrived during my designated drop off window to find no one at the kiosk. when I called I was told no one would be there for 45 minutes - which, combined with the inconvenient airport drop off locations miles away from the airport itself, will now cause me to miss my flight. The most convenient way to rent a car in NYC. Flexible insurance options, accomodating at rescheduling, transparent cost passthrough for tolls and refueling, etc. You can feel it's a young company that hasn't completely polished their app and processes yet, but in the end very friendly and helpful. I hope they succeed. The only downside is that the car wasn't as spotless as you expect from Avis/Hertz/..., but still better than most of my friends' and family's cars :) read more

I had a kyte car rental booking for jun 27 2024 through jun 30 2024. I booked this rental on jun 3 2024 which is almost 3 weeks ahead of my planned family getaway. Suddenly less than 3 hours! before my booking i get an email that my rental was cancelled!! There's 2 issues here number 1 if you don't want to rent me a car so go ahead and cancel me but not 3 hours before my reservation is about to start and im all packed up and ready to roll- when they had close to 3 weeks notice of this booking. And secondly i was given no reason whatsoever i tried chatting with an agent and i called customer service ,but the only response was that i should check my email including my spam folder which ill get explanation, but not so shockingly i never got any email. I suspect racism or even antisemitism here as i live in a neighborhood known to have many minorities. My damages were as follows first of all i needed to book a car from a different company last minute which ended up costing me over 400 dollars! versus 187 the kyte would've costed me for same 3 days, as it was last minute booking. Also besides for cancelling my reservation my account was locked from any further bookings and i do have a 65 dollar credit with kyte from previous issues which we resolved with this 65 dollar compensation but is now worthless read more

Drop off and return were great, but my friend left her wallet in the passenger seat pocket and quickly realized it-- we called within 12 hours of returning the vehicle with exact location of the wallet but were told they couldn't find it. I'm not sure if the person who picked up the rental stole it or if it was just negligence, but I'm disappointed. read more

Terrible unorganized customer service! My friend rented a car and I accidentally left my wallet in the car, didn't realize until it had been returned. That was a mistake on my part, I know, but I knew exactly where I left the wallet so I thought it'd be simple to get it back. Wrong! They make it hard to find a phone number to call in the first place, once I found the number I called multiple times and each time spoke to a different person. There was no sense of urgency & everyone seemed uninterested in helping me. I filled out the lost & found form like they said, I waited to hear back like they said, I had to keep calling every day just to hear the same thing. They said they looked and didn't find my wallet which is bullsh*t since I'm certain I left it in the car. Someone at kyte stole my wallet and there's nothing I can do about it! I traveled from NYC to the Bay Area and was super short on time but wanted to take a quick day trip to the redwoods near SF. I rented Kyte for a day, and it was seamless! I had no trouble using the app as a first-time user. The convenience of having the car dropped off to you & picked up from you is unmatched. My Kyte riders were on time, in fact ten minutes early, which was fantastic because I needed to maximize my time in the Bay Area and get on the road quickly. The prices & fees were transparent and I'd say comparable or even better than its competitors. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of picking up/dropping off your car, I highly recommend Kyte! This service *seems* great. The cars are nice, the pickup/drop-off feature is great. But, as many NY Kyte renters have probably found out, Kyte will try to stick you with NY parking's $65.00 tickets for outdated inspections. A charge no renter should be saddled with. I have tried six times at this point over the past two months to get this charge removed. But also, why does Kyte rent cars with outdated inspections? Then the other erroneous charges hit you. 45.00 here, 230.00 there. With no explanation. And good luck getting those charges removed, because it is clear their internal communications and operations are a mess. I actually think I'll have to get an attorney involved just to get my money back. So, it seems like a good deal at first - til you get slammed with hundreds of dollars of additional fees with zero explanation. Worst customer service I've ever encountered for a car rental service. They don't have a contact number for their claim department and the only way is through email. The claim department takes forever to reach back and it's after several follow ups. I still can't get a answer from them after months. Make sure to watch out for the insurance policy. Had a bad experience with return. Went to drop off my car to drop and pickup location. Kyte Surfer did not respond to my calls for nearly 25 minutes. Finally the surfer comes out to say that they were in a meeting. I am sure one of them could have come to tell me that they were in a meeting and sorry for the delay. Booked 3 days car rental with kyte back in March 2022 and also bought their liability and collision insurance. I was rear ended in the highway, police was called and report was filed and concluded it was 100% 3rd party's fault and their insurance team had contacted me for my medical reimbursement. Called Kyte and emailed their claim team SO many times regarding the $500 deductible n they refused to return my $$$. So much regret booking them ! It was the 3rd party fault why the customer (I) should pay for it ?? As a car rental company kyte should fight with the 3rd party insurance company for the car repairs cost !! Me and my partner couldn't believe this and they DONT even have a direct phone contact for the claim team and they don't respond most of the time by email ! If I could give 0 stars I would. We're still waiting for our car 3 hours after the reserved time. Kyte keeps delaying when the car will arrive. My weekend plans are wrecked as a result of this. I wish I just went the traditional rental car route so that I could avoid all this pain. They also have not been contacting me with any updates as to how the situation is going to get resolved. And they offered me a "generous" 25$ *future* credit, after many hours of stress for me. We have used Kyte and 3+ occasions but on this occasion we were very disappointed with the service from customer support. Our car was due back at 7am on Friday. Sadly we were slightly late by 30 minutes and at the time was on chat with Kytes customer support who mentioned it would be $25 for a new surfer to collect the car. A new surfer was booked but Kyte said the earliest slot was 10am. We then received an additional bill of $166. When I queried this Kyte customer service told me due to the time of 10am it was an extension of a whole day charge but at a crazy Saturday rate. When discussing this further with Kyte, the customer support team agreed that they would refund the $166 day charge as we asked for a new surfer only 30 mins late. However, then they decided to change their mind and only offered a 50% refund therefore charged us $85 half day charge. As you can see this is very confusing, expensive and inconsistent. We have been loyal and great customers and Kyte has really taken advantage of this situation. We really did feel there should be an alternative charge seeing as we had already paid $25 for a new surfer and was only 30 mins late. Not happy and has put me off Kyte now sadly. read more

I just used Kyte for the first time. I'm super pleased with the experience and will definitely use them again: - A clean and new (13k miles) SUV was delivered and picked up on time outside my building in Manhattan. I was texted the exact time of arrival one hour in advance. The delivery & pickup proceed took less than a minute. - The price was much lower than what the full-service companies are charging in my area. A few things to improve (hence the 4 star): - I had trouble with the online reservation: credit card and driver verification didn't work from the Kyte iPhone app, but worked from my Windows PC. - Kyte advertises they'll refill the car if needed at local gas prices. Though I returned with full tank, Kyte would have charged me $6.98 (price is $5.10 - $5.25). Make sure you return the car at same level you got it. - Customer service is slow and hard to reach. Can only be done via messaging, including if a car emergency. read more

Decided to try out Kyte since they were cheaper than renting from the big companies on short notice and they delivered right to our door. Was a great experience overall. Car was delivered by a friendly Kyte Surfer right in the 10 minute window that we set up. Car was nice and clean and had no issues. Another Kyte surfer was already at our drop off point when we arrived back a little early. Made everything quick and easy. We also went through one toll during our trip and Kyte charged us for the amount of the toll only and nothing more. Definitely would recommend. read more

My husband Moshe G. was very happy with Kyte and used them a lot but this is changed now. We had a slight accident with the rental car and notified kyte right away. Kyte sent us a form to fill out with our insurance info which we did right away. We also contacted our insurance company from our end to make sure the claim goes through. We kept on following with kyte when they will bill our insurance but the reps didn't get us normal answers and said they are working on it. it's been months and Kyte has not sent any info to our insurance company... and now we received a threatening letter from their attorney about a final attempt to collect thousands of dollars. No previous attempt was made whatsoever. No one from Kyte ever reached out to us. Their customer service is obviously terrible when it comes to more than a late car drop off. read more

Kyte rental cars are always clean and in good condition. They are dropped off and picked up reliably, which is so helpful when you live in a city and would otherwise have to travel to get to a car rental office. Their prices are similar to or better than conventional car rental prices. I always check prices on regular car rentals and Kyte, and I typically end up going with Kyte.
