You get this rolls of rice noodles along with pickled and fresh veggies, basil, lettuce, meat, and dipping sauce. I got the char siu pork, and it was delicious. Wrap it up and dip it, messy and addictive. I also ordered the wings done "mind blown spicy". This was stunty of me, completely unnecessary. I would recommend getting them regular spicy or even plain, the super spicy is just covered in chopped red peppers, not a special sauce. The chicken was tasty though. I saw this place a few months ago and wanted to try but they weren't open the day that I was in the area. Finally had a chance to stop in for dinner and everything was so delicious! All the dishes we ordered was so flavorful. Some spicy, some savory, some sweet. I also ordered a cocktail and the rum was very strong. The restaurant was cute and dark. Lighting was very dim. It wasn't very busy when we were there. Only 3 other tables. Service was okay. Kinda slow for being as dead as it was. I originally came for 2 other items that I saw on Yelp but they no longer serve it. Which those pics were posted by the business owner so I feel like they should take them down. I've been here twice now, once during wing week and recently with a group of friends. I've gotten to try the chicken wings both times and they came out at room temperature. When my friend told them the first time in July, they said they would work on it and it shouldn't have been like that. My other friend told them for the second visit and he said he'll let the kitchen know. Not sure if something will actually be done at this point granted the time between the two visits was almost six months. We also got the banh mi muoi ot along with the goi cuon tom luoc & nem nuong to share. The peanut sauce was a little too bland and runny for my taste but the sauce that came with the goi cuon nem nuong was good, flavorful and thick. I ordered the banh hoi xa xiu & heo quay. Portions were big and I took some home. We could've probably shared between two people given how many appetizers we ordered. There wasn't really anything special about the xa xiu, and I feel like it doesn't really pair well with the banh hoi so I won't be ordering that again. For dessert we got the pandan coconut bubble waffle to share and everyone liked it. I've heard the food taste identical to the Hong Phat deli as the owners formerly worked there. The menu may look overwhelming but it's really a large variation of a couple items. The menu is in vietnamese with english descriptions. The general public might have a hard time reading the menu and deciding off the description. Only certain items have pictures but it would be nice if all of them did. The pictures posted on Yelp by the business owners don't reflect what is available on the menu like the banh mi chao and banh trang cuon. We've asked about the banh mi chao at both visits and the first time he said they don't have it because they're short staffed and the second time she said it's coming soon. Authentic Vietnamese STREET FOOD in Portland? Sign me up! I love this food concept. You get some really authentic Vietnamese food in a very young and fast paced environment. Think fast casual meets sit down restaurant. It can get very crowded though, so be prepared to wait during busy times (weekend dinner time), but very worth it! I stopped by with a group of 4 for wing week - which is just a larger version of the fish sauce wings they already have on the menu. Very delicious and would be perfect with a side of rice. Other dishes I enjoyed and cannot find elsewhere in Portland are the banh hoi, the bubble waffle, and the flatbread. I will definitely be bringing my parents here the next time they visit Portland. Banh hoi heo quay (5/5) - never in my life have I had heo quay (crispy roasted pork?) sliced so thin, but I wasn't mad at it! This dish comes with plenty of pork and noodles to wrap inside lettuce. The fish sauce dipping sauce that it comes with tasted very light and fresh, and the pickled daikons and green onion oil made me feel like I was a kid again. Fish sauce wings (3.5/5) - we got the regular and the spicy, and both get the same rating from me. 3.5 by itself but definitely 4.5 if I had ordered a side of rice. It had the perfect crunch and was very garlicky. However, was a little too salty for my palette which is why I needed rice. It was also kind of lukewarm. We ordered a lot of food that night so I think they just tried to bring everything out all at once instead of each dish as it's done cooking. I can't be mad about that, perhaps some logistics issues with tracking what goes to what table and I'm sure this process will be polished after this restaurant has been running for longer (it is quite new, after all!) Pandan bubble waffle (5/5) - if I can give this 10 out of 5 I would! I LOVE pandan waffles, nothing reminds me more of my childhood than a pandan waffle. That being said, I've had my fair share of good and bad ones. A good pandan waffle needs to have a decent amount of chew, very reminiscent of mochi, and can't be too sweet. I'm indifferent about coconut shavings inside, I've seen them do with and without and think both are delicious. Lua does coconut shavings inside. What changed the game for me, and really upset me knowing I went 26 years of my life without knowing this, is DIPPING IT IN CONDENSED MILK. Amazing. Can't say enough great things about this waffle. Please order this, you won't regret it. Banh mi muoi ot (4/5) - basically, a french baguette pressed down super thin and topped with cha bong (pork floss), kewpie mayo, sriracha, some other meats, and green onion oil. This review is coming a couple months late but I had to take the time to shout them out! I was waiting for Lua for a while after I saw them taking the space on Williams and having their soft opening but sadly had to wait until their official opening. They have a cute and clean looking space indoors and even some covered tables outside. Menu is via a QR code and you can order that way as well to cut down wait time. Staff is super friendly here as well! The space was full on a Sunday afternoon so I am grateful I made a reservation. While it took us a best to figure out the ordering process, once we got the system down we found it seamless. While choosing to not carry certain staples of Vietnamese food they have other options consisting of appetizers, sliders/banh mis, and bowls consisting of your protein of choice. The tamarind wings are done well. Good flavor. The vermicelli bowls I tried were shrimp and beef. Shrimp was cooked to perfection and were so delicious. Beef wrapped in betel nut leafs were good as well. I haven't tried that before but, it was moist and good flavored too. For starters, I really really do not enjoy having to order all food/drinks through scanning a QR code and ordering it on my phone. I also hate having to walk up to the side counter to do all of that because I feel as if I'm doing all the service for this establishment. The food took a very long time to be ready, and we got a buzzer to go up to the counter to bring the food to the table. I do not enjoy that either because it takes away from the restaurants service. Mind you, we were the only customers at this restaurant. The wontons were extremely spicy, they need to include a slice scale on the menu for that because I had a terrible time after consuming these wontons. It was so spicy that I couldn't even finish it and I downed 3 cups of water. Way too spicy. The chicken and rice entree was very bland. There was no flavor, besides the chicken being grilled. The salad flavorful, but overwhelming because of the size of it. The rice was cooked well. I had to add sauces into this dish to add some flavor to it. I am so glad this restaurant opened in the neighborhood. This place opened almost a year ago, and the ordering process was extremely frustrating as my phone wouldn't connect to the WiFi, and unable to order food. Fast forward to May 2022; THANK GOODNESS they finally addressed the QR code. It's still a work in progress, but a significantly better experience. I suggest that anyone coming in scan the Lua Guest WiFi first, then scan the menu. They're still fine-tuning their new restaurant, so there is a wait, but it's worth it. Food. We know that Garden Grove and Westminster, CA are places to go for authentic Vietnamese food. When I first came to Portland, people talked up Luc Lac. NO. THIS IS NOT VIET FOOD. Not only is it overpriced, their seasoning is so far diluted and off; I'm insulted it's even called Viet food, but I can't say if they claimed it as authentic. Lua will be as close as you can get to the downtown area that offers a simple selection of items other than pho. The lemongrass tofu and banh mi dac biet are probably my least favorite. Anything with nem nuong and char siu is delicious (salad rolls, noodles, banh mi). Don't forget to ask for a side of green onion oil and smother all your dishes with it. It "enhances" everything. Drinks. I love all their non-alcoholic beverages so far except the strawberry (too sweet) and soursop (under-flavored) smoothie, but they are still decent. Don't forget to get the classic iced Vietnamese coffee. First, I need to get this off my chest. Nothing annoys me more when I see bad reviews on Viet businesses that there's "too much ice" in your coffee. This is quite common in Viet coffee because it is highly concentrated; hence it's served with 3/4 ice. One shot of Viet coffee is even more potent than a venti-sized Starbucks. So it has nothing to do with the business being too stingy on your coffee. Come by and check this place out with patience and an open mind. This will be my new go-to for comfort food. read more

I was hesitant to try this place but it's been on my bf's list for a while so why not? I'm so glad I gave it a chance! I feel like we tried half the menu, everything was so good! The egg and char siu buns were so flavorful. The the fish sauce chicken drumsticks were so crispy and juicy. The cassava appetizer had a nice crispy texture and it was chewy on the inside, couldn't stop eating it. The pandan coconut waffle was crispy, airy, and chewy, not too sweet and so yummy. We tried some other yummy stuff that I attached pictures of. If you like spicy ask for the Thai chili on the side! The place was empty yet it took an unreasonable amount of time to get served.The pho with chicken was gross. They don't ask if you want it with skin on and rubbery skin was hanging on every piece. They don't give you a plate to put it on either. If they had given us a plate for the 4 tiny egg rolls we could have used it for both. We wanted salad rolls but there's a minimum order of 4 for $20 which is absurd. He said it wasn't cost efficient to make 2! You sit down at a table and order through an online website, which I wouldn't have minded at all except both me and my friend had really bad service here so it took us a lot longer to order than it should have. We ordered the chicken drumsticks, fried chicken banh bao, the woven vermicelli with lemongrass chicken, and the pork and rice plate. The drumsticks were a pleasant surprise since it was a large portion for being an appetizer. They were covered in a tasty fish sauce. The woven vermicelli was fun to eat, and pretty good as well. The bao was nice and soft and the chicken was fried with crispy skin and a sweet/spicy sauce. I would say it's not a very authentic Vietnamese restaurant, but I think you can tell that just by how the interior looks. Regardless, the food still tasted good. The QR code links to a menu that you can order off off. This is a cool way to put in the order. However, the menu is almost too detailed and the lack of photos don't help. The menu needs to be cut down (probably don't need all that variety) and photos added of every dish. Also, there should be a general description of the section and then meat selections (rather than having descriptions about each dish under each dish....which makes the menu really overwhelming) - eg., for the woven noodle section, describe what that is, what the components are and then list all the meat options. The payment screen is also confusing. Confusing at first what button needs to be pushed to place the order. The food though. Really amazingly tasty!! I went back to the counter at 6:30 and asked if my order was ready. She said "another 10 minutes". Waiting there by the door another customer walks in, the gal asks their name and she immediately hands them their ready to go bag and they walk out. So at 6:40 I go back to the counter and it's ready and I tried to explain to them that the website said my order would be ready for pickup at 6:10! The gal said she "understands" and that it was "a busy night". (The place was half empty). Then she and her co-worker turned around and went back to looking at their order screen ignoring me. Terrible service, I will never spend another penny at that place. Show some respect for your paying customers! Food was just ok. Here's some advice: don't tell the customer on your ordering website when it's going to be ready for pickup if it actually takes 30 minutes longer than that. read more
