When we first walked in, we were the only ones there, which made me a little skeptical, but there were lots of takeout orders going out, and soon more people started coming in. I'm new to Vietnamese cooking, but I've been curious about Pho. So my better half and I stopped in Pho Bar 405 for lunch and we ordered the vegetarian pho switching out the tofu for a couple of shrimp. There were only two shrimp so I wouldn't do that again but the soup was delicious! They brought the garnish plate that the non-vegetarian soups include (I specifically asked for that) and it was a wonderful meal and a great introduction to this kind of cuisine! read more

SO GOOD. My go-to is Chicken Pho, Pho Ga, and I've tried a lot of it all around the West Coast. It's hard to find the good stuff since Beef is traditional. This place IS IT, the flavorful broth, the tender chicken, the aroma, the size of the bowl. I knew from the first sip that I was in a good spot. Also -- I made a big mistake and didn't try the chili oil before I added the whole small container to my bowl. I like hot but it was too hot for me, so I went to order a Thai Tea or anything creamy, but they didn't have any creamy drinks, so I explained my mistake and asked to order extra broth, and the kind server said she understood and would give me some broth free of charge. I am so happy this fine Vietnamese restaurant just opened in my neighborhood. My hopes for it to be good when I noticed I was the only non-Asian face in the place became a bit high, and Pho Bar 405 did not disappoint. They've chosen to focus on a smaller menu, giving their creative and adept chef the opportunity to focus on quality rather than quantity. I ordered Pho Ga because that is the standard by which I judge a pho house. It was delicious. The broth, rich, not overburdened with salt, was an aromatic delight. The nuances of all of the spices which, balanced, make for a memorable soup, were there. I sat, inhaling the broth for several seconds, letting it steep me in its healing aura. The chicken turned out to be tender, not dried out and rubbery the way some other places serve it. There were also generous pieces of it laying among the rice noodles and lovely spread of onion, parsley, cilantro, and after I added bean sprouts and basil, them, too. That broth was so delicious I took what was left in my bowl after I'd eaten my fill, home. Just too good to let go to waste. Service was excellent. My server, Ken, was professional, discreet, charming. And the smiling young woman I observed keeping up with a couple of groups, appeared to be equally skilled. They've redone the interior of this former sad sushi bar to create a stylish, soothing environment which includes a unique mural of Portland's train depot painted by a Vietnamese artist Ken unfortunately didn't know the name of. A very nice dining experience. This was our second visit to Pho Bar 405. For our first in the fall of '23 when we were visiting Portland, we each had different pho which while the noodles, meat, and soup were very good, was just too much soup for us. The restaurant is now 'local' to us having moved here a few months ago and for dinner last night we shared three dishes; Crispy Spring Rolls appetizer, Yakisoba Combination, and Fried Rice Combination. All of the dishes were served hot, nicely seasoned, and very tasty. The atmosphere is casual and simple, and most importantly noticeably very clean. The service was very good and attentive. Portions are generous and pricing is reasonable for the products. We look forward to dining here regularly. read more

I have been eyeing the progress of this restaurant when I first moved to Portland. I've been staying at my brother's place which is 3 minutes away from this place and finally saw it was having its grand opening! I ordered the crispy egg rolls $8.50- beautifully golden brown and flavorful on the inside. They give you a sweet and sour type sauce which works with the egg rolls but I am traditional and asked for some fish sauce and chili paste to make my own sauce. They also provide at the table sriracha and hoisin sauce to add the flavors to your liking. I also got the C1 $18.95 which is a combination rice place with grilled pork chop, grilled skewered shrimp, sugar cane shrimp, and a fried egg with perfectly crisp edges for that wonderful bit of egg crunch! The pork chop was tender and the flavors stand out on the sugar cane shrimp and grilled shrimp. I used that fish sauce to dip my proteins, but the flavors are great you honestly don't need it. Overall the wait staff was attentive and the food is definitely hitting my Asian comfort food cravings will be back! read more

As a kid from NEP who loves pho, I was super excited to give this place a try but unfortunately I wasn't a big fan. There really aren't a lot of good places for pho in NEP and I was excited to possibly have a closer option but this just wasn't it for me. A few thoughts: The good: -The place is clean and I like the bar seating. -They had Sriracha! A lot of places don't have it with the shortage but they did and that's a big +. -My server was good. He checked in on me a lot. The bad: -They have small water glasses. Nobody wants to keep flagging you over. Get some bigger glasses. -Soda in cans. I hate soda in cans. Get a fountain drink machine. -My biggest issue here was the broth. It just seemed like it lacked flavor and needed more salt (among other things). Most people that like pho have their "go-to" spots and good broth is absolutely essential. I don't know enough about making pho to pinpoint how to fix this issue but I wish I could just take the owner to some of the better spots around town so they could taste the difference. -The noodles were different. They stuck to my teeth. I don't know if this is because they were undercooked or what but it wasn't great. -Get the little green Vietnamese candies I'll probably give this place another shot at some point down the line in hopes that things improve but looks like I'll be driving across town in the meantime. read more

I went with my toddler, and they were so family friendly, all of the staff are really considerate and accomodating. My son loved the salad rolls and loved the pho broth too. We got the fish sauce wings, salad rolls, bun Bo hue, and grilled shrimp and pork vermicelli. The fish sauce wings did not have any hint of fish sauce but was slathered in what looked and tasted like the bottled sweet and sour sauce from your typical Asian grocery store, 3/10. The salad rolls were decent 7/10. The bun bo hue broth was bland and calling it broth is a stretch. Noodles to meat ratio was sad. The garnishments that typically go in this dish (Thai basil, Vietnamese mint, perilla leaves, sliced banana flower which is some times too pricy so some restaurants will substitute with red cabbage but that wasn't even considered here) were nonexistent, instead we were given a pile of wilted shredded lettuce and bean sprouts, 2/10. The vermicelli bowl was disproportionately noodles over all else. There was decent amount of meat and shrimp however the disappointment was in the watered down flavorless sauce, 6/10. The star of the show was the Vietnamese iced coffee! 10/10! read more
