Every time I am in Paris, I come here. Yes, it is one of the best fallafels, and that's including the fallafels in Israel as well as my dad's (but I'm partial!). It's in an interesting area, located just a few minutes from the metro, and although it is always busy, they move very quickly. We arrived right before the rush and got a table for our party of six. The sit-down prices are much more than the take-away window but you're going to want a seat to enjoy your falafel. The sit-down prices are not that bad and the falafel was worth every single Euro penny. Service was great (and in English). The group ordered four falafel sandwiches and two lamb shawarma. I promptly doused my sandwich in the red sauce on the table. It has been weeks since I've eaten here and I still think about that sauce. This was easily the best falafel any of us have ever eaten. This was my favorite meal in all of Paris by far. They're busy but they know just how to handle all the customers. When you first get there, there are two guys by the door who ask if you'd rather sit inside or order out. If you order out, one of them will take your order and hand it to the people behind the counter. They work pretty fast, we ordered two wraps and they were ready in under 10 minutes. The falafel wrap was so delicious! They don't skimp on anything, there were at least 8 falafel balls in there! We also ordered the shawarma, which they make with turkey, and we were pleasantly surprised. These things were huge! One wide open bite was not enough to get the top and bottom of the sandwich in. While a thoroughly enjoyed both, I think I'd have to recommend the falafel just a tad bit more. It's something about the crunchy outside and the soft warm inside that just makes me happy. That, topped with oodles of tahini sauce is the perfect receipt for a repeat visit from me. It just makes me sad that I have to travel 4000+ miles to do so. Apparently this is the place to go. Give the other places a chance, I suppose, but I was psyched when I saw the schwarma here. My goodness. It's huge. The line can get long, but moves really quickly. Price is SUPER reasonable, especially considering the quantity and quality. I got everything on the schwarma: cabbage, eggplant, schwarma, tahini, hummus, tomato--super good. It was seriously giant and I struggled to finish. It was super super tasty, and was boyfriend's favorite thing we ate in Paris! This might just be me/an american thing, but some of the people affiliated with this place weren't very welcoming and I did NOT appreciate that. Doesn't help the reputation, but I mean, what are you gonna do? When I asked one of my friends who had been to Paris numerous times for activity suggestions before my trip, she didn't mention the Louvre or Sacre Coeur. She raved about this falafel joint that I just had to go to. I know a cult food phenomenon when I see one, so I made sure to stop by toward the beginning of my stay in Paris. Little did I know I'd soon be back, over and over, stopped only by one day when they were closed. This was possibly the best food I've ever had. L'As du Falafel is located in a cute bustling street that offers many similar restaurants, but you'll be able to tell by the long line and general buzz around this place that it's special. I love the sign outside that reads 'Recommanded by Lenny Kravitz.' And no wonder Lenny recommands it...it's truly heavenly, with perfectly cooked falafels stuffed in a pita with the most delicious veggies and topped with their incredible hot sauce. Even better with a side of fries dipped in mayo. The staff is a bit cocky, but who can blame them? They know they're hot stuff. When I was there they also all seemed to truly enjoy wearing deep v-neck t-shirts. But hey, they can wear whatever they want as long as they're serving me their scrumptious falafel! Seated, my waiter came by to ask what I'd like to eat. I was ready. He was unsure that I would be so well-prepared, but when I began my order with a Maccabee, he knew he wasn't dealing with a novice. Falafel may be in the name* but I was in the mood for meat. I was hungry, so I opted for the shawarma plate. In no time, I was presented with a heaping plate of lamb & turkey, hummus, fries, pita, slaw, and cucumber/tomato/onion salad. It sounds like a lot of food. It is. I destroyed it. It was absolutely delicious. The meat was fantastically seasoned and generously given but it's the creamy hummus that captured my attention/love. Know that seating is tight and the restaurant gets packed. This is in an old European neighborhood so although the portions are American-sized, the seating is not. Jus' sayin'. Be prepared. Sweet baby jesus, things I would do to have another bite of this falafel. After hearing raves about this specific falafel place, it was on our must eat list. It's located in a bustling charming area with a lot of small eateries and boutiques. Don't let other falafel restaurants trick you, look for the green restaurant! I got the falafel where it was packed with hot falafel balls, crispy purple and white cabbage, roasted eggplant, tomatoes, topped with an amazing creamy Tahini sauce. Matt T. of course went for the meats and got the Shawarma. First bite into my falafel was a hot delicious mess. Unless you have a big mouth like Julia Roberts, I don't know how you can fit this bad boy all in one bite. The soft pita with fresh crunchy vegetables and balls of falafel heaven hit the spot so good after a long day of walking. We got a side order of fries to go with it which was nothing too special. Believe the hype. I came here first ~12 years ago on my first trip to Paris, when you could still smoke in bars and bikes were nowhere to be seen. I'd had falafel in Tel Aviv, in NYC, at home, and a few places besides. I didn't think I could be wowed by a place in Paris--what were they gonna do, serve it up on a damn croissant? How wrong I was. This is straight up Levantine goodness, and I walked away thinking: this is the best falafel I've had outside Israel, and matches what I remember from there. (And to the politically-inclined readers, yeah yeah yeah, falafel, Israel, cultural appropriation--I yawn in your general direction.) Listen mes amis, the story doesn't end there. I came back to Paris multiple times. I ate here every time. I brought other people here. People not inclined to love falafel. They loved it, every time. And every time, I was surprised how happy I was, and how the falafel lived up to the memory of the last time I'd been. There are countless eateries in Paris that are "better" than this, of course, but not so many that are as great. End notes: - Lines. Be warned. All the guide books list this place, so it's crowded almost all the time. - They have a takeaway counter but that's no fun. - Israeli beer is shunned by Israelis themselves, kind of like how Americans scoff at Bud. But it's not that bad. - Yes to fries in your falafel. Don't be a fool. Don't deny the fry. - If you don't put red cabbage in your falafel sandwich, then I just don't know what to do with you. - Never tried the other offerings, except once I think I had... a schnitzel? It was nice, but couldn't beat my mom's and didn't live up to the standard set by the falafel. - This is a sit down place with waiter service... but it's more eatery than restaurant. Never had a falafel but I am a fan particularly when a regular offered suggestions and got us a free sample. It was 96 degrees. I had walked 18,000 steps. I am old. So hot the brain hardly functioned but we got the falafel special, schwarma, and French fries to go. Yum. Loved the eggplant and the crispy veggies. So much food we had leftovers which we ate the next day, cold for lunch, because we could not figure out the microwave. It was made of magic - wrapped in soft pita with grilled veggies and of course those crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, balls of chickpea heaven. This one sandwich was worth the price of my Eurostar ticket. According to the tour books, L'as Du is THE place to get falafel in Paris. The tour books are full of... let's politely say "chickpeas." Going to L'as Du consists of the following steps: 1. Wait in a very long line. 2. Give your money and order to someone walking down the line. 3. Receive a piece of paper indicating your order. 4. Finally get to window, hand paper to employee. 5. Receive food. 6. Realize you have no place to sit and eat. Now, there is nothing wrong with the falafel you get. But you have no choices about what goes inside (unlike Maoz, which is also more centrally located!), but there is nothing special about it and you have just waited on a very long line to get it. And if you've made the mistake of getting anything else (e.g., a drink) you will have trouble juggling it while trying to eat it. Overall, the definition of "tourist trap" that is not actually good but just famous for being famous. (L'as Du is French for "Kardashian.") read more

Ok this place is really good, and worth the long line to wait in for the flavors. That being said, I did feel like my falafel was somewhat sloppily put together which made it difficult to eat. My husband had some of my falafel and he enjoyed the falafel balls, but didn't care for much of the other ingredients. There's no shortage of Falafel joints here in the Marais, but I only had time/space for one falafel sandwich, and I'm glad I came here. The lines were always long - I passed by several times... but as I found out, it moves quite efficiently. What I especially liked about the falafel was that they were small and bite-sized, fresh and the perfect texture with a nice crunchy exterior yet tender inside. The quantity of falafel in the sandwich was generous, and the price was correct for the quality. Delicious. Line wrapped around the block but wait wasn't that long- keep cash on you. Hidden in a maze of streets, quaint little place. They charged a price if you wanted to sit and eat inside, a small cafeteria type sitting. Otherwise you're free to stand around outside/walk and eat with your sandwich. That part was a little tricky because the sandwich is pretty big, made in a cone style so you're picking at it with a fork till you can take bites. So it's not really possible to eat and walk at first. And there aren't any places to sit outside the shop. But it's good food, reasonably priced, and short wait. Good stuff. read more

Ok - so I was going to wait to write my Yelp reviews from our trip to Paris until we got home. For the most part that is still the plan, because up until today we have found it impossible to have a bad meal in this city. But I now feel compelled to try and help anybody I can to avoid this place. As I sit here, roughly 8 hours after eating this mess, my husband and I are literally dodging our own belches and flatulence. Here's the thing, and it's an important one - sometimes restaurants with positive Yelp reviews in these numbers are legitimately good. Sometimes they are hype. You never really know until you try. Unfortunately this one falls firmly in the latter category. I don't know how this place got so popular, but I am going to theorize it is a combination of 1. Many people really not having any idea what this food should taste like, 2. Affordability, and 3. Celebrity association (i.e. Lenny Kravitz pics all over the place). I come from a Lebanese, Syrian, and Egyptian family. So please believe me when I say this is NOT good middle eastern food - not by a mile. It is the middle eastern equivalent of Taco Bell on a plate, as compared to authentic Mexican food. Firstly, the flavors of everything are very muted. Where the hell is the garlic and lemon in the hummus? Where is the seasoning on the shawarma? What happened to the moisture in the falafel? Bad bad bad. And that "spicy sauce" everyone keeps raving about - salt salt salt. A little heat after the salt wears off. More salt. Not good. Thank god I was at a table and able to control the amount of that sauce on my food - otherwise it would have gone from just bad to inedible. Maybe they are inconsistent with the salt in each batch and on other days it has been good? Today it was a salt lick. The falafel tasted like they fell in the cumin, on top of being dry inside and super oily outside - hence the indigestion a full 8 hours later. We have been eating decadently the whole time we have been in Paris and had yet to experience indigestion until this meal. My stomach knows cheap ingredients, and this stuff my friends is definitely made with low quality ingredients. The only highlights were the house made lemonade and the friendly staff. Fries were ok, but it's France - no big deal. Pita was ok - a bit too thick for my tastes, but that's a matter of personal preference - I like a thinner slightly crispy pita rather than a fluffy doughy one. I hate to be this harsh, but I swear I'm really trying to help. There has to be somebody doing better falafel and shawarma in this city, and next time we are here we are going to try and find it. And FYI - all these yelpers claiming to "know good falafel" because they've eaten at Halal Guys? Nope - wrong again. Another example of garbage middle eastern food being passed off as authentic to people who don't know any better. Here's a piece of advice for the owners; as well as anybody else who would like to experience what this food should actually be in all its true tasty glory. If you're ever in the Los Angeles area, look up a little place called Zankou Chicken (it's a local family owned chain - I recommend the West LA, Hollywood, Anaheim, and/or Glendale locations). Once you are there, get over the lack of table service, order some falafel and a shawarma or tarna plate at the counter, grab a seat, and enjoy. Trust me - you will suddenly understand my utter disappointment. If you haven't wasted your money or stomach space on this place yet, don't. It may be edible, yes, affordable, yes. But it's not good. If you're reading this, you've probably already seen the 400+ 5 star reviews. And hopefully you've already written down the address (metro St Paul on the 1, cross the street and a left on rue des rosiers, et hop !) and are all set to try it out. So there's not much left for me to do here, except give you my few tips to making this excellent experience even better: 1. Eat in rather than take out. The line for take out is always longer and always seems to move slower. Also, do you really want to risk the horrifying possibility of dropping one of your fallafel onto the street?! Don't be put off by the long eat-in line - it moves quickly, especially if you're a table for 2, they will sometimes pull you out and send you in earlier than larger groups ahead of you. The eat in line is to the right of the building. Just join the queue and the guy running the street outside will come up to you, tell him the number of people in your party and hold on to your paper ticket. 2. My perfect order: fallafel sandwich, fries to share, and a house-made citronnade (soooo good). Spicy harissa sauce comes in little bowls on the table to spoon on if you're so inclined. 3. Don't come on Saturday or Friday evening (closed for Shabbat). Friday afternoon is especially hectic as they're moving even faster than usual trying to get everyone in and fed before sundown so I usually avoid that too. A good option for Sunday lunch or informal dinner if you can't find something open in your area. 4. Have fun and enjoy the hectic atmosphere of waiters literally running past you and tables crammed in elbow to elbow. This is not your romantic Parisian bistro lunch spot, but that's okay, you'll have plenty of other chances for that. Bon appétit ! read more

A friend recommended this place while I spent a summer in Paris. They sold it to me as Lenny Kravitz's favorite falafel place. This place was incredible.
