So got in line, waited 15-20 mins, it's a lively street so the atmosphere is great and makes the wait go by fast. So the sandwich. The bread, is absolutely lovely. It's very soft and just absorbs all the flavor! The sandwich, as an idea is great. Delicious, big, saucy, messy. A good sandwich is messy. But I think in the hype they've gotten, they slipped a bit. At least the night I went. It was salty. The salad was salty and the falafel was salty. I could tell the sandwich would have been epic if not for that part. I couldn't finish it. The salt killed me. I was so looking forward to trying L'As du Fallafel when I was in Paris. I love falafel and the reviews promised great things. If David Lebovitz raves about the falafel, it has to be good! The line was long, no problem, great things were to be my reward for patience. I ordered the spicy Fallafel, mon Mari ordered the curried chicken. My falafel was piled high with shredded veggies, always good, but the fallafels were small, hard, dry and cold. Very disappointed. Perhaps I was just not lucky? According to mon mari, the curried chicken was "ok, but not worth the wait". Perhaps another unexpected miss? Not sure. There are lots of places we walked by in the Marais selling fallafel but we did not try. I was determined to eat falafel from the L'As du Fallafel. Mission accomplished. Dare I say, this is the Mecca of Falafel. You have to, have to, have to eat here. I thought it would be more appropriate to keep to traditional French food while in Paris but who am I kidding. Meh, this was one of several times yelp let me down while I was in France (unfortunately I was unaware of Cityvox until it was too late...). The falafels here were okay but certainly not the best I've ever had (I've had better in both Toronto and Montreal). I'm not sure if the people raving about this place just don't have access to good falafels or whether I missed something (sorry Lenny Kravitz!). We got our falafels to go and while the line appeared long it moved quickly thanks to the guy collecting the money in advance. Oh man. Ohmanohmanohman. I heard a lot of hype about this place, but I find that often hyped-up places end up disappointing. Not that they're bad, but they're just not as good as people make it sound. Not so for L'as du Fallafel. For 5 euro, you get one delicious falafel filled with chickpeas, tomatoes, lettuce, eggplant (I don't even like eggplant but I liked it in this), etc etc etc...all topped off with hot sauce and whatever that white sauce is (I don't care what it is--it tastes good). Might have given this place 3 stars if not for the massive hype that got me all worked up for delicious food, only to be extremely disappointed. The falafel is really good. Unfortunately, nothing else is. The shawarma is bland and they don't give you much, the sandwiches are full of too much oddly flavoured vegetables, the hummus has next to no flavor, and the fries are decent at best. If you do go here, which you will because everyone seems to like it so much (why, people, why?) get a falafel plate and have it with the spicy sauce, which is also pretty good. DO NOT get a sandwich. Seriously, the shawarma sandwich was the worst one I've ever had and the falafel sandwich was only edible when I took the falafel out and ate them separately, dumped the veggies, and ate the pita dipped in spicy sauce. (update: my partner says he liked his shawarma sandwich, but this is only his 2nd experience and he liked his last sandwich, in Haarlem, The Netherlands, better. So order at your own risk, I guess). This was quite possibly the most filling falafel pita I have ever had in my life. It's pretty difficult to give me a pita filled with all sorts of amazing tasty goodness and have me not finish it...but L'As du Fallafel filled me up. And it was amazing. The line outside was long, and we didn't care if we paid more to get to sit inside, so we did that. I am more than willing to pay extra to not look like a total mess in public as I eat. They bring the pitas to you so fast. I liked having the spicy sauces available for adding more as I went along. I love being able to control it since for some reason nobody ever trusts that I know how spicy I like things. I am not even a fan of cabbage but I ate it happily on this pita. My mom was complaining that she didn't want it with eggplant, but ordered it as is anyway, tasted it, and ACTUALLY LIKED IT. I felt kind of bad for the other places since they had no one in there, and then L'As had like 30 people outside! The hype is real...this is a legit fallafel. The sandwich is so big you won't need to eat for at least 3 days. The pita is soft and doughy and holds those little fried balls of heaven like a cradle. Whatever sauce is on there? I wish they'd just pour it in a glass for me. Every time some dripped on my plate I would hurriedly soak it up with pita. Don't order anything else, just the fallafel. Yes, trust the hype! This place was bomb! Came here based on reviews so we thought we'd give it a try. As we walked up, there was already a line on both sides of restaurant. One was for window ordering (to go) and the other was for dine in service. It only took us about 7 minutes to be seated. Meanwhile we couldn't help but notice a different falafel place right across from it, advertising "best falafel in Paris" yet no one was there. I thought that was pretty funny yet painful for them to watch the constant business flow of this place. Anyhow, the seating is very tight but this is custom for Paris so it didn't both us much. But I'm so glad my family and I decided to try it. If you've ever been around Israelis like I have, this place definitely gives off an Israeli vibe. This is ... THE BEST ... falafel sandwich I have ever had, though I am comparing it to mostly the poor Mediterranean scenes in ATL, and elsewhere, it really is the best falafel sandwich. I regret not trying other places in Paris, which people also say are so good. But, within my limited experience of Mediterranean cuisine, they do it right in my book. It is a lot of stuff they put in but, I think that's what I love about it. Most places in America don't do the "pocket", but they just fold the bread over the minimal ingredients, crushing the falafel (and they only put two of them in), so as to look more like a really thick taco. What really made me fall in love with this falafel is the grilled eggplant that they top it off with. Man ... I was all too happy after I had that first bite standing in the street. Who cares about the line when the end result is getting to taste this thing? Who cares about seating when you can just eat and walk and hang out in the street? I love eating while I'm moving. Hell, I love eating while I'm driving, but that's just me. I had another memorable menu item from them. The Poulet Saute Au Curry, oh man, I love me a sandwich like that, and remembering it from 2+ years back, it was nothing short of heavenly. Actually, I have tried some good places down here in ATL that make some good kebab platters, including chicken, lamb, and beef, so I can't say I'm surrounded by a destitute Mediterranean scene. And every time, they've been closed, or the line looked too daunting, or I somehow couldn't manage to get myself to Le Marais. And so last week while in Paris, I made it Priority Numéro Un to get this place off my check list once and for all. I consider myself to be a bit of an aficionado of falafel. It was basically a staple of my diet for the four years I was a vegetarian in my mid 20s (okay fine, we'll call it flexitarian, since I definitely never stopped eating foie gras). This place had a line down the block...it was so busy when I went there on a Saturday afternoon. The guys running it where thankfully very organized. I decided to take away mine, so the line I waited in was about 15-20 minutes of standing before I received my food. I ordered the chicken shawarma and received two falafels as a sweet gesture. The falafels were very good, I regret not ordering those on my gyro instead of the chicken. As you should know by now, these gyros are MESSY. But totally worth it. I believe I've had a better gyro in town, but this one was decent. The chicken could have had more flavoring and more toppings would've been nice.
