L'As Du Falafel For those who live in Paris, this review has no new information. But for visitors to the city, my recommendation is simple: if you focus on quality of food (rather than luxury or ambience) and can only have one meal in Paris, it should be at L'As Du Falafel! It came highly recommended from local Parisians through a friend of my daughter, and we therefore made it a point to come here. We each had a special falafel sandwich, which most of their customers have, and shared a chicken schnitzel sandwich. I also had a fresh lemonade with mint. Every item was excellent! We have been in Paris for 5 days, but each of us enjoyed this meal the most -- much more than some meals three times as expensive. What made the experience even better is watching the people working there -- they were very busy -- always moving around quickly and working non-stop -- but they were all getting along so well with each other, and also having fun. Despite the long lines and the constant traffic, they welcomed each customer warmly. We saw how Guy, one of the individuals working close to the counter, on seeing an elderly lady waiting, made a place for her to sit and quickly provided her a glass of water. Later, when a customer suddenly turned into a server causing a basket of fries to fall, the server apologized to the customer (although I could see that it wasn't the server's fault at all), and before that server could even turn back after apologizing, one of his colleagues had already started cleaning the floor. A negative customer service interaction was so seamlessly handled, and I am sure that that customer and my family weren't the only ones impressed by it. Indeed, it was fascinating to see how well the entire staff took care of all the customer despite the tremendous traffic. It was clear they took considerable pride in working there -- when I thanked our server for an excellent meal, he gave a wam smile and replied, "Sir, if you are happy, that makes us happy." This was probably one of the best restaurant meals I have ever had, anywhere! And it cost us less than 50 Euros for 3 people, including drinks and tip. This place is world famous, and deservedly so. Sure, there's always a long line, but these guys have been doing this for a while, and have perfected the art of getting the line moving quickly and efficiently. Your order is taken just as you get in line, though if you'd like to add to it after you've had some time to think about it, it's perfectly possible. I'd had falafel from two other places in London since returning from Paris and L'As du Falafel beats them both hands down. After receiving my falafel, I noticed a sign in the cafe window stating that this place was endorsed by Lenny Kravitz, along with a photo of said musician with the guy who'd just given me my falafel. I'm not sure if that in itself is an indicator of the quality of the falafel here, but I just thought it was an interesting, funny bit of trivia to throw in. While this place is open throughout the week, I'd recommend coming here on a Sunday, getting a falafel and then exploring the rest of Le Marais, given it's one of the few quarters in Paris which is open and active on a Sunday. read more

A true gem in the Marais, their falafel sandwiches lived up to the hype- Moist and hot on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was quick and family friendly. If you like it spicy, be sure to get the hot sauce. And get a drink because, wow, was it salty. I must say it was the saltiest falafel I've had in 25 years- Otherwise I'd give them 5 stars. English: This is my favorite Falafel place. Hands down. I've probably eaten here more than all the other restaurants I've been to in Paris combined. When I lived in Paris I went here at least once a week. And now every time I go to Paris I stop here for lunch, unless it's a Saturday when the restaurant i closed. Amazing falafel. Amazing toppings. And... I just discovered when I went there to sit down for the first time in ages, that Monday through Thursday you can get schug ("piment vert") there on top of/instead of the harissa, which is much spicier and more delicious. The schawarma is also very good. Your options are waiting outside in line (which goes very fast) and just eating as you walk through le Marais, or eating in. 95% of the time I just get it to go. The line can be a bit intimidating and sometimes it gets hectic, but don't be discouraged, because it's well worth the 5 euros for one of the most delicious falafels ever. Francais: C'est mon resto le plus preferé a Paris. J'y ai mangé plus fois que tous les autres resto's que j'ai visitée a Paris. Quand j'ai habité a Paris, j'y ai mangé au moins une fois par semaine. Deep in the Marais, I finally returned to L'As du Fallafel, often imitated (there's another one across the street) but never beaten. The quirk here is that you actually have to go inside to buy your meal, before heading back outside to hand it to the vendor. Many a tourist has queued up, finally reaching the window before being sent inside and subsequently to the back of the queue. Not this guy though! Instead of the standard fallafel, I opted for the meat, both chicken and lamb, grilling slowly on the spit, it had fantastic flavour, and the pitta was stuffed full of it, along with chili sauce, fried aubergines, lettuce and hummus. I wish I had more napkins, towards the end the combination of the sauce and the drippings for the meat lead to a little puddle in the bottom of the wrapper and it did get everywhere when the paper finally let go. One mark off for that and the fact that they could make it clearer for tourists to go inside and pay, it isn't that hard to figure it out, but you kinda assume that if you line up, then you can do everything in one go. Finally, something outside of a boulangerie in Paris where someone can get a budget bite on the run. My friends and I had just spent the past 4 hours in doing the Louvre. We were exhausted and I warned them of the long walk to this place. The journey was filled with complaining and my constant soothing, "We're almost there!" In the middle of the day, the wait was about 10-15 minutes. A man walked up to us while we were waiting on line and took our money and order. By that point, we were so jaded from the walk that we realized that we could have almost gotten scammed. American tourists must always be wary when traveling Europe. Don't worry though, the guy actually does work for the falafel shop. The sandwich was not the best falafel I've best, but definitely up there. Filled with many ingredients, a spicy red sauce, and well cooked falafel balls, I would recommend this for a cheap eat and something different from Parisian baguettes and bistros. read more

This is by far, the best falafel I have ever had. It's an interesting, hectic little street full of twists and turns, but we were definitely there for a reason so we were not distracted.. You can dine inside or order with the guy outside and take it to go. We took it to go and ate on a hydrant, along with a box of fresh strawberries, as to not feel like complete fat asses. The shwarma and the falafel were massive. The veggies and sauces were falling out, and it was really difficult to eat with both hands. Definitely wish we had a table. There are two other falafel places near this one, and I don't know how they stay in business. L'as du Falafel is always jam packed with people, but there is always an option for take away and sitting on a sidewalk nearby! The guys who work here make falafels like magic: swift, sharp movements... a few slices of eggplant here, some lettuce, topped with crispy falafels, quickly layered with some sauce, then another few falafels thrown on top. Wowza! 5euros for a whole falafel wrap!? This was by far the biggest surprise for me in Paris. What a great little joint. You know its going to be good when the line not only wraps around the plaza and but the place in front of you is selling the exact same stuff and there are only 2 people. The falafel was cooked to perfection. It had fresh satziki with purple cabagge and oh so amazing flavorful soft eggplant pieces. I'm writing this on behalf of my husband who is sitting here ranting and raving about how amazing this felafel was. Felafel is one of my favorite foods but sadly this felafel icon isn't gluten free (ps the place across the street is pretty good and GF). I did taste a dab of the tahini sauce and it was excellent. The outside of the felafel was crunchy and the inside was dense, soft and smelled like heaven. It was obvious they changed the fryer oil often since it lacked any old oil smell. As for flavor my husband said it was herby and delicious. Mark says this is definitely the best felafel ever. read more

Believe the hype. We tried another falafel place down the street, and there's no comparison - this is the genuine article, right here. There's a reason a line forms down the block every day. This place has the best falafel in the city, and maybe even the damn planet. It's easily the best my wife and I have ever had, and for five euros, it's an incredible bargain you can't miss. Also, let's not leave out the shawarma, which is just as good, and only a couple euros more. Forget the haute cuisine and Michelin stars of Paris - if you want a truly unique eating experience in this city, this is the place to go. Two different friends suggested I go here and shortly before I left Seattle and headed to Paris. It was even mentioned locally in the Seattle Times! I have never seen a bigger fallafel sandwich! It is stuffed full of veggies including eggplant and cucumbers and more falafel than I thought a pita could hold. This is traditional Jewish falafel and the restaurant is Kosher. It's in the Marais and there are a handful of other falafel places a Jewish bakery and lots of cool boutiques near by. When you walk up to L'as a nice gentleman asks you if its for here or to go, takes your money and gives you a slip. You get in line and wait for them to build your delicious sandwich. I'm not a huge tahini fan and they even gave me a dollop of hummus for my sandwich which was either 7 or 8 euros. One of the best lunches I had during my 3 weeks in Europe. Don't be fooled by the numerous other falafel places that you have to pass to get to this one. You'll know it's the right one when you see the long line for take out. We knew this place gets packed so we went shortly after they opened a bit after 11am. There was no line and we were seated promptly. By the time we left around 12, they were jam packed and a line was forming out the door. Despite that, our service was pretty good. But the highlight here is the food. We ordered the Israeli plate which was a good amount of hummus served with warm pita bread. It was soooo good. Then of course I had the falafel special sandwich. It was by far the best I've ever had. Unbelievably good and very filling. While seated, there was a video playing showing how they make their food so it's clear they have pride in this restaurant. Was it good? Yeah I'd say it's "good", but I've had just as good in Boston, if we're being completely honest. That's not the reason for my bad review, it's because the guy taking orders outside (to move the very long line along) was a jerk to the woman working at a Falafel place right across the street. This falafel wrap was my first meal in Paris and I was not disappointed. Paris may be best known for croissants, crepes, and chocolate, but this falafel wrap was one of the best I've ever eaten. The pita wrap was soft and delicious and they put a lot of falafels in one wrap...PLUS eggplant!!! The eggplant adds a nice touch. There's also tomatoes, red cabbage, and some great tasting tahini. Be sure to add the spicy sauce...it brings a nice kick to the all around flavor. This place is a great option for a meal, without spending a ton of euros...which is nice, since eating out in Paris can get quite expensive. It's true, you can get sick of French food. After several days of bread, cheese, and various meats, I wanted something different. Falafel isn't a light food by any means, but I figured it's vegetarian and full of fiber so it's kinda good for you, no? The line was long but it moves quickly, thanks to an employee who takes orders while you're waiting in line. The guys working the falafel assembly line are a bunch of fun, watch them toss the little nuggets of chickpea goodness into the waiting pita halves while you inch towards the counter. I like that they add roasted eggplant to the pita, and the falafel were crisp and tasty. It's also filled with tons of fresh cabbage and cucumber, but by the time I made my way through my pita I was a bit overwhelmed by the volume of vegetables. Also, I think mine needed a bit more tahini and sauce to flavor the rest of the cabbage. Overall, a solid falafel and a cheap eat at less than 6 euro. read more
