We visited L'Aventure this past weekend in times of Covid and 111 degree heat, and had a fantastic time! I think the winery did everything they could to make it absolutely as safe as possible, yet still make you feel like times were "normal". Upon arrival, we were greeted by our host and taken to our table outside. (Reservations only). Sanitizer was on the table, and all the tastings were brought out in a set of glasses on a tray so they weren't being touched by multiple people. The real reason you go here is for the wine, right? It was fantastic! From the first tasting to the last, each wine was clearly well balanced and delicious. Not one bad pour! From the Optimus to the Cote a Cote to their Cab--each one was unique. The part that really made our visit special was our host, Jake. He really took the time to explain the journey the winemaker, Stefan, took to end up in Paso, and knew all about the soil, how the weather impacted the grapes, and process each wine went through from soil to bottle. We discovered that the cab grapes are grown in limestone soil (hope I said that right), and then funny enough, we visited the neighboring winery, who's cab grapes are also grown in limestone and was really good, so now we know to seek out this more specific type of soil at other places we will try. The grounds and tasting room are fine and the staff was really lovely and sweet. The review is because I felt the wines were not good and so overpriced. This has been on our list for years and we came because so many friends raved about it, but it feels like this ship has sailed. Wines were tight and so so young. Hands down our favorite winery of the day! If you are one that is very interested and passionate about wine, L'Aventure is a must see (and taste!) in Paso Robles. Not only are the wines unique and so delicious, but the experience is very special, hence why they are appointment only. We were with one other couple during our tasting with Martin, which created a very intimate feel, as we were able to ask many questions and really discuss the wines and the winery. Martin was extremely knowledgeable of anything and everything about L'Aventure. During the tasting, you are taken on a cave tour in which you are surrounded by beautiful barrels with aging wine - this was definitely our favorite part of the day. You are able to learn a lot about the winemaker during the tour and are given an even deeper description of the wines and how they came to be! In addition to the amazing wines and service, the facility was very nice, with a modern yet cozy vibe, and absolutely stunning views! The tasting is $50 but the quality to price ratio is definitely the worst that we've had, ever. We have memberships in both Napa and Temecula and feel that the price for both the tasting and wine itself is definitely not worth it. When I made the adventure to L'Aventure the first time I found myself without a reservation. My mistake! Fast forward 8 months and I arrived, two girlfriends in tow, with a 10am reservation. Perfect! Behind the nifty gate is a windy little road that takes you right up to the barn and newly constructed and super chic tasting room. Modern through and through, L'Aventure is one gorgeous setting. We were greeted by the friendly pouring staff and quickly whisked around the bar to begin our tasting. The wines were pleasant enough and quite lovely. The price point was a little higher than others in the area but keep in mind it's all estate grown and the care and meticulousness in production reflects this. Most, if not all the wines, are spectacularly reviewed by my favorite wine critic Jeb Dunnuck. I've been very fortunate to have visited a lot of wineries around the world and I would have to say this winery is one of the top 3. The wine tasting experience was amazing and their staff are awesome. It's worth the journey and back road driving for sure. The tasting area is etched in between the hills and you are surrounded by their grapevines. The building has a modern trendy feel to it which I like. Their wine is reasonably priced for the quality that they produce. I loved it so much that I joined their wine club which is a big deal for me since this is the first wine club that I've signed up for. Hoping to meet Stephan one of these days. They don't even put the effort to come and explain about the wines. Also, I called to make a reservation for the tasting and they were saying the place was full. The $10 tasting fee that includes the stemless Riedel glass is a bargin considering the price of the wines here. The pours are big enough to share, and there was no hesitation when we asked to revisit a couple of wines. The tasting room staff was very pleasant. The tasting room itself is a bit on the small side, and can get fairly crowded when a bus load shows up (that's what we encountered). We tasted the following (all 2010 I believe) Estate Rose Optimus The Sibling Cote a Cote Estate Cuvée The last two were my favorites. I should say at this point that these are not your usual California wines, not very fruit forward, they have a more European character. That being said, I considered buying the two wines I liked, but couldn't get past the $85 bottle price. I just felt they were overpriced. I have enjoyed their wines from afar, so i figured it was time to enjoy them more up close =) One of the best wines I've had is by L'Aventure, but, alas, they do not make it anymore. It was their Rim Rock Estate Syrah. Tasty goodness. However, all their grapes are grown on their estate now, so no more Rim Rock. The tasting cost ten bucks, which is standard Napa fare, but in these parts, it's downright expensive! You do get to take home a Reidel glass with the winery's name on it, but still. Tasted five wines; all were good. The more expensive ones, sadly, were better. The Estate Cote a Cote was great (85 bucks) as was the Estate Cab (80 bucks). It was busy there, which is testament to the quality and reputation of the wine. I do enjoy it quite a bit, but it is pricey. My 85 dollar bottle of wine is resting nicely in the wine fridge. I am awaiting the moment to enjoy it =) read more

While on our wine tasting adventure around Templeton/Paso, i realized that the wines developed in the area are not quite to my palate's liking. I tend to like the lighter fruiter wines and Templeton and Paso have bold red wines. However, my bf really enjoys the bold red wines and he really enjoyed the wines here. Unfortunately, the bottles are very expensive. I thought that the $10 tasting was very reasonable considering we got to taste such expensive wines and got to keep the wine glass. A while back I spotted their 2005 Optimus blend at my local haunt and I decided to buy it solely for the name of the winery since The Adventure (in any language) is a running theme in my relationship. I'm only 23 and still in the midst of learning about wine. It's all good and well to read about it, but wine is really about the "Aha!" moments where you understand exactly what someone means when they say things like "full-bodied" or when they're describing the "mouth feel". I had an "Aha!" moment with complexity. It was just one of those wines that made you keep coming for more. I personally think the nose on this particular vintage is amazing. That being said I made it a point to go the long way back to San Diego from Napa so we could stop by. We were there just as they opened up so the tasting room was really quiet, but the three staffers there were super friendly and very informative about the wine and Stephen Asseo's own adventure. The wine is really, really, really good. Being a poor college kid I prefer to not spending more than 30 dollars on a bottle of wine but this place is worth the price tag. It's pure luxury in your glass (a beautiful stemless riedel one you get to keep at the end of your tasting). The only thing that I didn't like about the place is that they didn't put the tasting fee towards my purchase. We were excited to try this place because four different people we talked to during our trip (other tasting room staff, friends, etc.) said that we needed to stop by here. Maybe our expectations were too high, but nothing really stood out from their wines from the others we tasted on the trip. It probably didn't help that the staff here didn't really seem to care that we were really interested in the wines. The woman poured the wine, let us know which one it was (not too hard considering we were going down the list) and walked away for EVERY POUR. It's not that they were super busy. She knew the instant we emptied the glass because she'd be back within 5 seconds to pour the next wine and walk away again. We saw that other people were definitely getting a lot more attention from the other pourers so it's not the entire staff that's like this, but that's what we experienced and it sounds like we aren't the only ones. It's too bad because their wines were pretty good despite the bad experience we were having. Just not $80+ good and we also didn't feel like giving our business to them with the treatment we got. Tasting fee of $10 is reasonable considering you get to keep the Riedel glass out of it. Side note: expect your car to get dusty getting to this winery. You will drive through about a mile of unpaved, dusty road. read more

This is our 2nd visit and we brought some friends for tasting. They surprised us with a nice cozy table inside the cave with our name on the table, and offered everyone a club tasting which has 6 wines including 2 that are for wine clubs. The "For Her" was the table's favorite. The way tasting works here is a little different in that the staff sits down with you and explains all the details of the winery history and its approach to making wine. They also pour all the wines at one time so you can taste them side by side. However, if you don't like a stranger sitting down with you and having a conversation, you may not like this. We loved that we got to ask questions about how their wines are made in a certain way and learned a lot about the winery and the region. This staff who served us is super knowledgable. The wine is in the $100+ per bottle range, so perhaps check their website and you have to decide for yourself if you will be happy paying for the wine if you like it. They always say the best wine is the wine you like and can afford. Since wine is a living thing and will continue to change, we hope to visit again. read more

I liked a majority of the wines that I tasted but the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon knocked me out. The grounds here are beautiful. The owner lives there and can be seen roaming around the winery. It's nice to see owners that are involved. This place takes appointments as their wine tasting room is not that big. The lady working with us was full of information and had the best personality. Although it was a rainy day when we came to visit, it was very peaceful and the grounds here are really beautiful. We did wine tasting and although the grounds are beautiful, I did not really enjoy the wine here. It is at a very young age and when aged for few years, I think these wines will be at its best. I just like my wine when I want it. Although, I read good reviews of this place, I was a little sad I did not leave with a bottle or two. It did not wow me to spend the money on the bottle that made me just say it was ok. We did end up paying for the wine tasting since we did not buy wines here to comp for the wine tasting. This review is long overdue! L'Aventure is hands down my favorite wine and the tasting room experience only adds to it. Everyone that pours here is super friendly and knowledgeable, but if you have the opportunity you should definitely try to taste with Leann. Her energy and passion are contagious and she is extremely knowledgeable about the wine and the wine making process. The wine itself AMAZING, Stephan definitely knows what he's doing. If you're more of a Tobin James, free tasting, only looking to catch a buzz, wine drinker you should skip L'Aventure. They take the wine making seriously and the wine is meant to be aged. That being said, they are very welcoming and will educate you on their wine if you're a novice, and will definitely carry their own if you're a connoisseur. When I first started coming here I knew nothing about wine and never felt intimidated or looked down on. If you love the wine you should definitely join the wine club too. The pick up party is a blast and the club also gets you invited to private wine maker dinners. I've only been to one dinner so far but it was fantastic and we'll be back for more. Very disappointed with the poor service and arrogance . I was looking for nice bottles to offer my husband for his bd or even the club membership. I did not have a reservation but did not plan to do a tasting. The 2 employees were not busy, only one customer in the tasting room. The lady was very unpleasant. When I asked her about the winery, she just handed in a miniature brochure and walked away. Then she came back and I asked her about the wine club and again she gave me a paper and walked away. And finally she gave me the wine price list.
