If you are looking for a very small boutique and family owned winery, this is the place for you. Nestled in the windy roads of West Paso, lies Villa Creek Cellars. We arrived and were primarily greeted by a bunch of happy and excited doggos which are owned by the family who runs this winery. After battling off all of the licks and pets, we were welcomed in by our guide who sat us at a comfy couch at the side of the tasting room. She then poured us multiple wines and they all very delicious. Throughout the tasting we were introduced to the owners son and other staff members which cemented the small family operation feel of the establishment. Villa Creek was our second winery we did in Paso Robles area. We made a reservation about a week before for 1:30pm. It was about a 20 minute drive from the downtown Paso Robles area. There's no food offered along with the wine tasting which I didn't mind at all and so we ate before. There isn't good cell phone service out there so definitely having directions down beforehand is key! When we got there you needed to put in a code for the gate to open and the parking lot is not really big but parking was easy. The tasting area had a couple small areas outside and a couple small areas inside. Camille greeted us and we were sat right away for our wine tasting. Wine tasting is $40 a person. We got to sit inside on a cute sofa surrounded by beautiful house plants. My two favorite wines were the 2020 Understory and the 2021 This Way That Way. We really appreciated Camille explaining all the wines to us and her knowledge about the winery and vineyard. Me and the hubby really liked the look of the wine labels and learned they were designed by Camilles mom! We loved the dogs on the property and even got to pet one of the dogs named Mirah who was friendly and playful. This was definitely a more intimate wine tasting experience and I really liked that. What an excellent experience! Camille greeted us and proceeded to take the next couple hours or so to tour us around the vineyard and their operations. We met the family and the family dogs. The wine was excellent; the view from the top spectacular, and the conversation and info was very cool. We'd definitely do it again, and the amount and quality of wine we were tasting for the price was definitely worth it. I would say, to avoid any potential issues for the more "refined" among you, that this is a supremely casual affair. That's not to say this wasn't a stellar experience, but if you're looking for a degree of snobbery with your wine tasting experience, this isn't for you. I've been drinking Villa Creek's best since 2014, and few others compare. I've never met a family so lovingly invested in their craft and their product! A couple of our favorites are Avenger (any vintage, they're all wonderful), 3 (the 2018 vintage was that last one I've had since they sold out ) and Understory (see menu in pic). Also, the winery property is GORGEOUS. We love the "tucked in the hills" atmosphere and even took some newlywed photos in the vines also, if you're like us and don't like the rowdy wine bus crowds, they are by appointment only so it doesn't get as crowded or loud as other tasting spots! Camille is our favorite host (also our dog's favorite host) but we are always well taken care of by whoever we end up with! Even during the pandemic, we've felt comfortable and safe coming to visit. This place has to be hands down the best winery in Paso Robles. It is WELL worth the $30-$50 tasting fee. Their wines are complex and amazing, with a focus on Rhone varietals and Rhone blends. Their staff and owners are welcoming, informative, and unpretentious. This visit we were hosted by Lindsay and Elise, both of which were friendly and knowledgeable. They provided detailed descriptions and backgrounds of each wine. We did the Flagship flight ($30 per person) and it featured 1 white and 4 reds. We were lucky enough to enjoy a fun side by side extra pour, comparing the 2019 and 2018 vintages of their 100% Grenache. Just the response to my review proofs the fact of declining service quality. Instead of being appreciative of the customer's feedback to help improve the business and try to make immense, they make the customer feel at fault for their poor service and not being hospitable. Just look at the other few reviews regarding the declining service.ONE IS TOO MANY. I still feel Chris is a fantastic wine maker and a good person in heart and the wines are great but for heaven's sake get your hospitality in par with your wines. Please do not turn away customers. Please find a way to accommodate special guests even if they are late. You do not need to point the short comings of your guests. They are the ones who support you and spend the money! We are trying to help you to improve your operation and accommodating us as well. That's all. First time visiting The Creek and the wines were all fantastic. Grenache was amazing, the Cuvee' was equally amazing (2013). Would love to join the wine club but it may be out of my league. This is way off the beaten path, in the Far Out Wineries (I guess) or Westside Paso Robles off of Peachy Canyon Road. Probably not the safest road to travel with a fleet of other people tasting wine in 100 degree weather but I recommend pacing yourself accordingly and maybe hit two or three wineries in this area by appointment so you are not rushed and fighting the drunk fest crowd. We stopped here by chance, as we we're driving around Adelaida. It was quiet and peaceful hillside setting. Only another couple tasting wine, after they left the server gave his full attention. He was very informative, forgot his name( I am not good at remembering them the first time), but he is from San Jose. He explained about the sustainable, lunar calendar based practice of the winery. Very interesting. Wines we're solid, I wasn't wowed though. Plus they were expensive. Do give this winery a visit. Villa Creek is a must if traveling through Paso Robles. I agree that they are probably my favorite winery in Paso. They also own a damn fine restaurant in downtown Paso. As for the wine, their reds are quite phenomenal and produced using fruit from local vineyards such as Denner, James Berry, and Ohana.. The only downside is that production is somewhat limited, and that some of their more exotic wines are saved for bottle sales. There really should be 2 ratings for Villa Creek Cellars; 1 for service/atmosphere and the second for the wine. The wine is excellent, top to bottom one of the best in Paso. My top favorite wineries in the area are Law, Torrin, Denner, Austin Hope, and Villa Creek when it comes to the wine. The tasting experience at Villa is just not warm; not rude but just not an overly friendly experience. My wife and I have been there twice, the first visit was between the first shutdown for Covid and the outdoor only reopening. We enjoyed the wine but did not get a feeling that our business mattered much to their team. We did though decide to give it another chance thinking dealing with the Covid requirements at that time may have been the issue. Our second visit yesterday was much the same; we sat, we tasted at an 11am tasting with only a couple tables being served. As before there was little more than taste, order and leave. We asked if we could peek into the tasting room, which we were granted but not before a list of requirements in a not so friendly manner. We just wanted to take a peek, not a big deal and we didn't even ask to go in but we had to get our list of rules first. At the end after buying around a case between us and our friend we walked out and the manager, Camille, didn't even bother to say thank you. We had booked a tasting here and we were running a bit behind so we called them to let them know and the gal who answered the phone told us if we can get there by 1:15 it would be fine. We arrived right at 1:15 and the owner Camille told us we were late and we have forfeited our scheduled tasting. On top of saying we couldn't do the tasting, she was going to keep all the tasting fees. This woman has absolutely zero customer service, she has no business working in the hospitality industry. She did a dis-service to this winery and I'm sure will continue to do so. I do not recommend this place as long as Camille the owner is their lead customer facing Manager. He's very supportive of other local wineries and is a great spokesman for the region. His GSM blends are consistently good and his Grenache and Rose are a delight. A tasting experience at Villa Creek is a throwback to the good old days in Napa, with personal attention and unpretentious conversations about wine, Paso and the topics of the day. My wife and I ventured out for the first time since March, wine tasting in Paso Robles. First on our list was Villa Creek Cellars. We showed up promptly for our appointment and was warmly greeted by tasting room manager Camille. Appropriate COVID-19 measures in place, with masks and sanitizing stations, we were seated outside, under the walnut tree, with beautiful views of the MAHA estate. Other tasting party's came and went and all the while being socially distanced. Harvest is in full swing and the winery was busy processing the morning's pick. Both Cris and JoAnn Cherry, proprietors and winemakers, took a moment out of their busy day to greet us and chat about the ongoing harvest season. We tasted through the VC flight of 1 white and 4 reds. Camille provided detailed descriptions and backgrounds of each wine. All were amazing! The Syrah blend "3" was our favorite of the day. As a special bonus, we were treated to a taste of the 2012 Carver Cabernet from magnum. A lovely experience on a gorgeous fall day in Paso wine country. read more

That's what I think every single time I have a glass of The Badger, Vulture's Post, and/or Highroad. This is west-side Paso Robles Wine at its finest. My wife and I, and another couple were sitting within ear shot of the dispute that Lynette had with the manager at Villa Creek. The winery assigned one server per one party and each party had a time slot and were told that they had to be on time to be served. Well, Lynette and her husband/boyfriend were late and thought that the rules did not apply to them. Lynette's partner was vigorous "mansplaining" to the manager why she was wrong. The topper was Lynette's partner told the manager that she must be a "Thump supporter"...what? Anyway, the obnoxious couple left, and we continued to have a wonderful time at the winery. Hands down the best winery in Paso Robles. One of the best wineries in the state. I have been to over 1000 wineries, so I know good wine from bad wine and this place has the best wine. This is a definate stop if you ever in the area. They are only open on the weekends from 12-4, and they usually like you to call or email ahead beforehand to make sure someone is there to help you out. Cris Cherry is the owner and winemaker, and his winery is the tasting room. He offers all of his wine for tasting he charges $10, but that is nothing when you are tasting the best wines in Paso. I recommend all his wines. He does a crisp white that is a blend of 55% Grenache Blanc, 35% Roussanne, 10% Viognier. Really good and it has just been released. Another wine that has just been released is the 2007 Willow Creek Cuvee which is a blend of 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre 2006 Vulture's Post is a blend of 80% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 5% Grenache 2006 High Road, James Berry Vineyard is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre. Definitely my favorite out of all these wines. 2006 Badger, Booker Vineyard wich is a blend of 65% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache. This was my second favorite wine 2006 Avenger which is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache. If you don't like Syrah, Grenache, or Mourvèdre, then this place is not for you. If big wines with lots of flavor don't appeal to you, this is not your type of winery. If most of the wines you drink are pink in color, this winery is not for you. We visited four wineries recently and this was by far the worst experience. The manager I guess or older lady that greeted us was rude from the start. We were starving and would had sandwiches to eat. They do say no food but originally it was because they didn't want people past the hour allotted. I assured them that we would have no problem eating a sandwich and tasting 6 wines within an hour. The story then changed too they didn't want it to compromise the wines. They didn't seem to have the same problem with the party of nine which I believe violates California guidelines eating burritos and Cheetos. Maybe I didn't realize that Granache and Cheetos were an excellent combination. The only positives were they do have nice friendly dogs on the property and two of the wines were good, too bad the employees are not as friendly. It was the only place we didn't purchase any wine or join the club but fortunately other experiences at Calcareous and HammerSky were great. Jada has great wines too but the tasting area isn't as nice. read more

All the wines here are good, but a bit overpriced. There was a $100 bottle that was a little older ( I think an '07) that had no business being priced that high. However, they also had a $40 rhone style wine with grapes sourced from the Denner vineyard called La Boda, which was one of the very best paso wines I've tasted in a while. It was exceptional. The staff was friendly, tasting room had a nice vibe. The place had a family owned feel to it with a modesting building and tasting room. I liked the experience, I just think for the money there are a few better values to find in Paso. read more

Dog Friendly! We called beforehand to make sure they were (I would have hated to have shown up to find out that they aren't dog friendly). They were super nice and said that if our dog was ok with the wineries dogs they were fine with us bringing our dog. We didn't end up seeing the winery dogs while we were there, but were greated warmly and Buster was invited into the tasting room with open arms. I actually really like the non-fancy tasting room, it's more natural and like we're invited into their winery to really try out their wines. The wines were fantastic. My bf, who isn't a huge wine fan, really loved the difference and the variety of blends that were presented to us. The bottles are more expensive than others we bought in the area but I think it'll be worth it (saving the wine for a special occasion). The drive up to this winery also is a big plus. The road we took was very scenic and we saw deer and wild turkeys running around. I would love to visit when the grapes are in bloom! read more

This was our first winery stop in Paso Robles. We were greeted by dogs laying around outside. They don't have a fancy tasting room yet, but it seemed like they were looking into extending the place to make one. We had 5 tastings for $10. We tried the White, which was a nice light blend. The reds were all new to me as they were blends with Grenache or Mourvedre. The Mas De Maha, Avenger, and Onda were all pretty good, but the one that stood out to me was the Avenger, which was 75% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 10% Grenache. At Villa Creek, there's not so much as tasting room as a little table set up inside the winery, which I always find charming and encouraging (though on this particular trip, it was cold & pouring rain, so I enjoyed it maybe a little less than I would have otherwise). Like most other wineries in this part of Paso, they concentrate mostly on Rhone blends. The fee is $10, but you get to taste a fair number of things for it, and I hear that they occasionally serve little snacks as well. The wine was not bad, and a couple were quite excellent. By and large, though, most of their offerings struck me as a little on the sweet side and less complex than I like, and most were a bit overpriced for what they were. I think our favorite (which I can't find on their site now) was $50 or $60. For $30, we probably would've taken multiple bottles. Not a bad stop, and everyone was very friendly, and I do like the charm of tasting in the wine-making area, but we'll probably skip it next time. read more

As chance would have it our day of tasting was scheduled for a Monday. After reading a number of great reviews about this place I was really looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately, the Villa Creek tasting room is closed on Mondays. However, I sent them an email and within minutes I received a response that they would be glad to set an appointment. The place really isn't all that out of the way, but it definitely is secluded. Thank goodness for GPS. When we arrived, I was really underwhelmed. The tasting room is literally a shed. Most wineries have one or two good varietals and usually save those favorites for the last pours in flight. Here, the first taste from the first pour was EXCELLENT. I thought for sure we were tasting backwards. Fortunately, we were not. Things just kept getting better. Every wine in the flight was fantastic. In fact, Villa Creek and Denner were hands down the best wines we tasted the whole week. It came as no surprise that Villa Creek buys a lot of their grapes from Denner. All the couples in our group joined this wine club. Some of my friends are cheap and some are snobs, but as all of them joined, this should be a testament in itself. read more

My absolute favorite winery in Paso. We found it in kind of a roundabout way (an employee at another vineyard recommended it), but it was so worth it! If you like Rhone style blends you'll love this place. Be sure to make an appointment ahead of time - but don't be intimated by the idea of a private tasting. The owner Cris is so nice and the cellar atmosphere is very low-key and low pressure (the vineyard dogs and cat are running around). He's happy to educate and has the best wines I tasted in this region by far. My personal favorite is their Grenache - I cannot believe what a STEAL this wine is! read more

This winery was one of my favorites of the trip. We had a brief discussion with the winemaker, Cris Cherry, and learned that he was trying different bottles closures to protect against cork taint and he was also trying aging in concrete. Due to the thermal mass, apparently concrete holds the cold, and allows for some oxygen transfer - without having to use wood. The two concrete casks we saw were 4 inches thick as compared to the few millimeters used in normal oak barrels. I liked everything that was served in the tasting room and was itching to become a member: 08 "La Boda" of 50% Grenache and 50% Mourvedre, 08 "Garnacha" with 100% Grenache, 08 "Avenger" from 70% Syrah, 15% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre, 08 "Mas De Maha" with 60% Tempranillo, 20% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Carignan, and finally an 08 "High Road" James Berry Vineyard with 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. read more

Cold tasting room, expensive wines, $20 tasting fee and only waived with purchase of 3 bottles, and even when we tried to engage the wine server with conversation about the wines, he was quick to answer, pour or wine, and leave. He also had the audacity to tell us after we cleaned up our own spill that we should've left $5.00 for the cleanup. After getting $140 from our group of 7 in tasting fees, I think this review is all he deserved! For the price of their wines, all but one over $50 a bottle, I think they need to work on being more welcoming and friendly. read more
