I bought sunglasses thru the catalogue this past spring for $99. They did not hold up well---the ear pieces and the nose pads fell off. I returned them today (with the pieces and the case and cleaning cloth--like new) and they issued me a credit of $69.95. I also returned a pair of my husbands boots that had cracked soles--other than that they were clean and in fine condition. I paid sixty something for them new and they gave me a store credit of $45. I didn't realize how little the store credit was until I was out of customer service and by then the line was way long and I didn't have the time to ask for an adjustment. But this certainly isn't representative of the guarantee they bandy about so freely. I don't think the founder Leon L Bean would approve. I shop at Bean's a good amount and have never been treated less than fairly ---until today. I have rarely had to return items to Bean's--except the sunglasses which I love but are problem prone . This experience leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. If you need to return something make sure to ask for an even exchange or be sure to check the amount you are being credited before you complete the return. read more

I love LLBean. I remember getting backpacks when I was a kid and LOVED them. We all had them. I love that LLBean is a part of Maine and they have GREAT customer service. HOWEVER I have had problems with getting merchandise that I want. It took several months to get a backpack that I wanted in the right color in stock. It wasn't even back to school time. I also had a winter gear item that I wanted that had been back ordered until June. What? I didn't purchase it. I'd give them 5 stars but this one issue holds me back. The merchandise is TOP NOTCH and you pay for it but you get what you pay for. They are open 24/7 which is great when you work nights and want something to do at 3 AM. I'm not a fan of LL Bean's clothing style... I'm more a J. Crew-type of person, but I figured it was worth a visit to the flagship store. The building is HUGE and particularly spectacular around Christmas. The quality of LL Bean clothes is, indeed, exceptional. I feel like the price is on the expensive side, and I simply don't like the way LL Bean clothes look on me. After promising a delivery in early February (for a winter item), LL Bean charged the credit card in early February and we got the item on March 5. One month later. It was ordered in November and first promised in December, then changed to early February. No apology, no tracking number, no notification that it was coming. By now, it's probably in their discount bin for this year. Getting last fall's fashion in March is not cool, LL Bean - the least you could do is apologize or provide a link for feedback. read more

I am not a huge LLBean fan, but this store/emporium is outstanding. Obviously the quality of the goods is stellar, but the quantity will astound you 4sure! There must have been over 1000 backpacks, lunch bags, and travel sacks when I first walked in the door. Um wow! The place was decorated in the back woods, campin style complete with a small pond. Campy- yes! Check! Anyway, my Mom happened to call while I was looking around at the Adirondack Chairs and picnic baskets and she requested about 7 different things. Now I am hunting all over the place, but I did find everything she asked for...my complaint...no shopping carts. Ugh! They wanted me to use one of their bags, that was also for sale. I thought that a bit odd and decided to just hold on to it. It was dangerous, I live dangerously. This business cannot be beat! I called twice recently and a HUMAN answered the phone on the first ring. I had bought a travel alarm clock two years ago and the backlight no longer worked. I was amazed that they offered to replace it with a new one (I mailed the old one back). I purchase from them regularly. LL Bean has the best customer service of any retail store online. I've been a loyal LL Bean customer for more than 30 years because they stood behind their products, so I was very surprised when LL Bean issued me a "gift card" rather than a reimbursement for returned merchandise. Apparently a gift card is the new default reimbursement method! I sent several emails to Customer Service, but the various reps who responded all essentially blamed me for not understanding their complex policy regarding Paypal purchases (which, BTW, is not explained anywhere on their website). Two years ago, I received a gift of a wonderful hooded light-weight jacket that is perfect for the climate I live in. The zipper broke about a month ago. I called L.L. Bean & spoke w/ the representative about the possibility of getting my jacket sent back for the company to repair the zipper. The rep told me my options, #1 to request repair of the zipper or #2 to ask for a gift card totaling the price of original purchase of my jacket. As I'd really really wanted to have this jacket's zipper repaired, I asked for that when I sent it back to them. Well, L.L. Bean came through big-time! Not very welcoming at all. I was looking forward to visiting this flagship store but upon entering, we were ignored by the greeter. I thought maybe that was a fluke and she didn't see us even though she was looking straight at us but even walking all around the store, we were ignored by all (except for one) of their employees, who seemed to happily help other, non-minority customers. Given that LL Bean does much of its business through catalogs and online, I had thought that its employees would be more open to diversity but that was not what we experienced. The only employee that actually acknowledged our presence was an African-American worker, who was actually friendly and asked us if we needed help finding anything (thus the extra star). I did end up buying one of their reversible jackets, but for the price, it didn't provide much warmth...I guess similar to my experience at this store? On the non-people related side, this place is huge with different stores catering to different activities. Prices are pretty expensive given their products are not made in the USA. At least they have a generous return policy although that's probably too much hassle if I ever have to mail my jacket back. read more

Update: I worked my way up through management at LL Bean. I am happy to report, LL Bean came up with a personalized solution. It was more effort than I would normally want to spend on registering for a class, but in the end, they accommodated us. My son and I will both attend the map & compass class for 50% off (thereby paying for 1 person), a fair and "non-box like" resolution. End update. I've loved LL Bean my whole life. I've shopped there and taken their Discovery classes, attended outdoor concerts, my kids even attended their summer camp. I've stuck with them even as their product quality deteriorated and prices rose. I used to buy Beans without price checking other places because I knew they'd stand by their product. This too has gone by way of the dodo. Today I called them because (1) My daughter and I previously took their intro to map and compass course; (2) one is required to take this course before taking the field course; (3) my 10 yo son wants to take the intro course so he can join my daughter and I for the field course; (4) a child may not take the course without a paying parent in the class. I asked if I could sit in the class with him. They were inflexible with an emphatic "no". I must pay for the course for myself again for him to be able to attend. No exceptions. My beloved LL Bean has become just another box store. Bummer. I hope Beans culture will improve in the future, but until then, I sadly intend to seek out alternatives to Beans going forward. read more

I received an email from LL Bean basically saying (and I'm paraphrasing) that things got royally screwed up during a recent upgrade; it took much longer than anticipated and was more involved than originally planned. I appreciate very much that LL Bean acknowledged and bore responsibility for the ordering snafus. Just being honest with customers demonstrates an organizational integrity and has redeemed LL Bean in my eyes. If I could give Bean 10 stars I would. I have never had a bad experience with them. Their representatives are trained to be people, not salesmen. I'm never uncomfortable ordering by phone because they are so upbeat and cheerful. If I have to return an item, they make it as easy as possible. Seriously, you don't have to like everything they sell - but you can't find a better company when it comes to common courtesy, respect or genuine "customer care". I got a call today because our credit card expired and since my card had changed, they could not take a new card and place the order (because it was originally processed through paypal). I've been purchasing merchandise from LL Bean since 1958. It's definitely not the same company anymore, especially for customer service. I recently purchased three items, sending two back for a refund, and one for an exchange. When I didn't hear anything from LL Bean (I waited 15 days after UPS tracking said the items had arrived there), I called Customer Service to see what was going on. The man that I spoke with was quite rude, interrupting me several times and doing so with a curt tone in his voice. He also told me that it will take about four weeks to process both my return and exchange. Four weeks seems unreasonable to me - it never took that long before. I'm going to seriously think about if I want to keep doing business with them - even though if you add up my purchases over the years, it would probably buy a new car - because, as I said previously, they definitely aren't the company that they used to be. read more

LL Bean is my wallet's worst nightmare, but I love this place! I always go a little crazy when I visit. This is a sprawling campus with several separate stores that focus on different products (apparel, kayaking, home decor, etc.). As far as I know, everything sold is covered under LL Bean's lifetime warranty. You can't beat that! The quality of their clothes is second to none and I always purchase a few sweaters and t-shirts when I visit. Living in Texas, it's hard to find good sweaters at home. I haven't spent much time exploring the non-apparel sections, but their camping gear looks to be very high quality as well. Check out this flagship store if you ever find yourself in Maine. The store is enormous and tons of people go here daily, but they have lots of staff and multiple check out areas. I was mid way through my purchase when I was accosted in one of their stores by another customer. A man threatened to stomp on my child, while the ENTIRE staff at the checkout looked on and said nothing (backstory, my 4 year old son tripped and stepped on his foot). After being threatened by another customer and having all employees look away, I promptly left without the purchase. The woman at my checkout whispering "sorry". I have called and been passed around to 4 customer service reps - and all they can say is "we will review the tapes at some point". Not one person has offered to help me place the order, not one offer to facilitate shipping me the backordered item (since I will never step foot in that store again). The WORST experience, the WORST customer service. They should be ashamed of how they handled that situation and they are handling the incident. read more

It might be a little more touristy than it was 30 years ago but you still cannot beat the quality or the variety of outdoor camping supplies and clothing. I had a $10 promotional gift certificate which expired a few days ago and ask politely to TWO sets of customer service reps to consider giving it to me since it was an honest mistake on my part. There is too much competition out there for that kind of treatment to consumers. Just wanted to give a shout out to LL Bean's customer service. I bought painted cottage furniture 2 years ago from the catalog and one piece was attacked by the vacuum cleaner; a corner was damaged. I emailed the CS folks to ask if they sold touch up paint; my answer was that they were sending me paint from the factory! It arrived in 3 days at no cost. Yay, LL Bean! read more

Well I am sadly disappointed again. I used to go to LlBean (it's just 2 miles away) but after 5 or 6 disappointments I gave up. Today I got a catalog. I have been tossing these into my recycle bin without so much as a glimpse of the cover for over a year. Here's why I'm disappointed with Llbean and why I'm writing this review, disappointed again. I am a size somewhere between their XL and 1x. I'm also tall-ish with a long torso. I wear a 14 regular pant. At llbean the closest pants that "fit" are 16 and they are too tight on waist, too loose in thigh, knees, but snug on calves. The tops that are XL are too short, sleeves are tight and short and chest...forget it. 1X is sometimes too small, sometimes too big, always too short, always sleeves that are too short (long sleeve) or too long when short sleeve and awkwardly tight either in shoulders/armpit/chest often all of the above. In addition to the difficulty finding the "Women's " section which is often tucked away in a random ever changing unmarked area that is completely neglected by the stock person. There will be many 3xs and no 1X too find. When I do find something that is worth the trek across the store to find a dressing room the real disappointment hits like a ton of bricks. Nothing fits at all. There's always something just not quite right and it's never something that I can call satisfactorily comfortable. Nor does it ever look right. So I open the catalog today and,truly I wish I hadn't. That's why I am writing. I saw 3 things I liked. 2 of which did not offer a woman's size and the third that did ONLY OFFERED IT IN ONE LEGNTH YET THE REGULAR SIZES OFFERED the LONGER OPTION! Imagine my disappointment at llbeans consistently poor selection and options for size/shape of the woman's clothing lines once again. I'm not abnormally shaped. I have a regular long torso with a slight belly/love handle/muffin top and wear a 40C bra size. Why is this hard to do? I look around at the other shoppers when I'm in their Freeport me store. Around me at every turn is another empty handed sad similarly sized 175lb woman looking like she's about as disappointed as me. We all end up leaving more disappointed then we came in and depressed if we actually tried on these odd sizes. 9 out of 10 times the bathing suit tops especially have a HUGE gap between XL and 1X. Last year there wasn't a single 1X to be found and turns out they skipped it I guess. Oversight? Lack of vision? Common sense? A couple years ago there was a position on their career page looking for a size 14 model and I applied! I though this is perfect! I can help them help other women too! They needed me to help them get this right. I was excited and looked forwarded to this job. Not so. Nothing, no letter, no call and no offer. Now I had this to add to my disappointment in LlBean. They don't care about woman in the XL-1X or 2X in particular. The catalog is a disappointment in many ways, such as lack of detail, poor color choices and when I did find something I liked I found that item did not offer a woman's size option. Jeez Llbean you really know how to bring a girl down hard. I suspect this will eventually be the root of llbeans eventual inevitable impending down fall...neglecting to pay attention to who is shopping in their stores ...or more specifically who isn't -those of us leaving empty handed. Look at the outlet - every woman's item they are discounting has 12-15 extra small, 10 + small petites, some smalls and one medium item to chose from and that poor medium one that looks stretched out. Like a large sized hopeful tried to make it work and failed. It doesn't take a business degree to figure out that if there are always a million smalls on sale in the outlet maybe it's because the supply exceeded the demand...they should have hired me I could have helped them see the obvious ...I think it's probably too late now. The breed of ultra conservative petite shoulderless skinny armed size zeros are becoming extinct and the athletic healthier generation isn't going to return after 2 disappointments. They're smart. They know there are other options ...just not between 11:00pm and 9:00 am ...the only difference if you want a preppy pair of flip flops or a lobster decorated set of sheets for your cottage. The sheets will last a long time and cost 5 times more than the next best set from Macy's or JCPenny so there's that ...plus they'll fit the mattress . read more

I have been an LL Bean fan for 20 years. Recently ordered a pair of chinos for delivery to my home. When they didn't arrive after 2 weeks, a few of my neighbors told me that packages had recently been disappearing from our street. I told this to the LL Bean rep at their 800 number who without further questions, sent out another pair of pants. The pants are great, but way more important is the customer service and willingness to fix problems even when they did not cause the problem. read more
