I am so torn about this because I love LL Bean to pieces, but the customer service on my last visit was so lacking. I was directed to registers that don't exist, not offered monogramming information at the first register I visited when I asked about monogramming, and forced to repeat irrelevant information 3 times to fill out a simple form. I also was not notified when my monogramming was done despite leaving my phone number. I understand that places are understaffed at this time, but if you go there and need to interact with an associate, be prepared with patience. read more

Mecca!!! I thought wandering around ll bean's physical location would be a fun way to spend a few minutes, but I ended up browsing for hours! It was like the catalogue come to life, but with museum-like signs, and camping equipment you can actually try out! I could have spent hours and hours and thousands of dollars here. My practical side won out and I actually logged on to their WiFi and placed an order to be shipped to my house so I wouldn't struggle with filling my suitcase. But what a novelty to be able to try things on and feel fabrics form my favorite store before purchasing! I remember coming here as a kid in the sixties, small, wooden floors, lots of "Yea Yups" from the staff and you could wander across Main Street without a cross walk. Today, it's just about the same, well, it's huge in multiple buildings, some wooden floors, carpet and tile too, the still Maine friendly helpful, but an "Yea Yup" is hard to find, and finally crossing Main Street... ...please use the cross walks! Despite their evolution over the years, quality and service have remained steadfast and key to their brand. In the good olde days, we would make a day of the visit, even tailgate picnic nearby and head back for more shopping. Sh!t company to work for. They constantly push you to do more then when you make 1 mistake because you were rushing its the end of the world. They will hire you and promise full time employment then you find out at the last minute you are only temporary with no hope of ever being full time. On my last day they said I was more than welcome to finish the shift but didnt have to. When break time came I simply went home. From their summer concert series which gets a variety of artists to their winter wonderland extravaganza complete with Santa's workshop, reindeer and gorgeous holiday lights (think hallmark movie) they have a little for everyone!! You can't miss the big staple Duck Boot outside, either! They make quality products raging from fishing, home-goods, clothing, bikes, skis you name it they probably have it! I have spent many wonderful hours visiting, best part is you can visit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! I once heard a rumor I believe to be true that they don't even have locks on their doors. They were once known for their wonderful no questions asked, forever guaranteed return policy that had now changed and while we are defeated by that it doesn't mean I won't shop there anymore it just means I have to be a little more selective and aware of what I'm purchasing. read more

But given that this flagship store holds so many memories for both my husband and me, and how frequently we visit, it's time to give this stalwart company my own review. This past weekend we visited friends in Maine where we did little more than sail, eat, and hang out, but still, as always, we made time for a Bean jaunt. Although I've been coming here for many years, I can't beat the memories my husband has who as a boy along with his family would drive up from Connecticut in the old woody station wagon for vacations. Along the way they would always stop at Bean which he remembers as being in a small building and only selling essential camping, boating, fishing, and hunting gear. Today, this enormous flagship store is a very different place but built beautifully inside and out. It's not only a shopping destination for outdoors-people but sells something for everyone and is a every bit of an "experience". In addition to the original merchandise, of course we know that Bean sells all kinds of clothing mostly of the traditional, preppy variety along with an array of home goods including furniture. The customer service continues to be a major draw. The staff is unfailingly polite and aims to please. There is a greeter at the door and plenty of staff throughout the store in each department. Returns couldn't be easier with or without a receipt and regardless of when you purchased the item, if there is an issue, you can return it. Bean doesn't get 5 stars from me because sadly the sheer number of items made in China and other places overseas now is distressing. Even I remember when most of the merchandise was made in the USA with the exception of a few things made in countries known for hand-crafting the particular item. LL Bean offered an exchange, but they want the item returned first, will examine the product, and then issue the exchanged item. We sent this item back to LL Bean on 12/7/21. The item was delivered 12/15/21. After speaking with LL Bean customer service today (12/29/21), the item had yet to be processed by their return team. They estimate 2-3 weeks from item processing to issuance of exchanged item. This means, best case scenario, we will be without the item we've purchased for over 7 weeks - all due a defective product sold by this company. It's sad and frustrating. I just purchased a new Rugged Ridge Parka from LL Bean and the coat is a shadow of the one I bought 5 years ago. It's flimsy, cheaply made, the hood does not fit well and is far too large and clumsy, and I am very dissatisfied and am sending it back. I should have known it was not going to be a good experience when I ordered. I placed the order last Sunday and it stayed in "Processing" for 4 days until it shipped.I called to ask what the hold up was the the rep was rude, condescending, impatient and acted like she wanted to be elsewhere. Buyer beware!!! Not to long ago I was looking at ll beans clothing and decided to order a men's flannel jacket on sale. I've never worn any of their clothing. After days of trying to find an item number on my online account page, which you have to have to start the return process. I called them to see if I could get it. Let me just say the automated phone system is not user friendly and neither are the employees. This began a process that was absolutely ridiculous and completely unnecessary. I logged into my account to see if they received the return? What I found was they had received it, and continued applying late charges, and it was turned over to collections. The people on the other end of the phone just passed me around cause no one could tell up from down. One person could talk to me but couldn't view returns on her screen. The collection department just wanted to argue, even after giving them the tracking number. And to top it all off, the last person I spoke too, informed me the return process takes 2-3weeks!!!! "Nothing I can do until then," she says. I have no way to tell if someone had actually opened the return." Good night! Would it kill someone in customer service to talk to someone else. So now it's my problem that it's in their building, and I have to wait until someone opens it, for something to happen, but no one knows when that will happen? Really?? To recap: the online navigation is not user friendly, the departments don't interface, so communication sucks,and it sounds like no human talks to each other, and the entire return process allow a month to complete! Sheesh, were barely into the holiday months and they can't seem to get it together. I feel like, again, this is a company suffering because of poor management and maybe even customer service issues, or it's infected throughout and no one knows what to do? So, they sweeten the deal on clothing by offering an extra incentive (discount) if you apply for credit from Citi. If a return is this much of a hassle I'd hate to see how a big problem gets resolved. For my peace of mind, I'll wait till things are ironed out on there end, and close the account. I wish we had a L.L. Bean store in Tennessee! The rainboot outside the entrance was cool. All of the nice raincoats were cool too, especially since it was raining outside and we didn't bring any rain gear. Another great deal I took advantage of was buying a ballcap and t-shirt combo for $16.99; online the cap itself was $29.99!! When stationed in Northern NY on Lake Ontario we survived the long cold Lake Effect Snow ridden winters by dressing in L.L. Bean attire. I have to tell you the Rubber and Leather boots are magic and the outer gear in layers will keep you warm for hours in sub zero temperatures. Seriously, L.L. Bean is the gold standard for extreme temperature/ weather clothing. They have sizes from Toddler to Lumber Jack. With that in mind, it was my first stop at one of their stores. It is like stepping into a catalogue. This place is cool-in a Redneck and/or Yuppie kind of way. They have everything from boots to Shot Guns. For those of us with ADHD or just being Space Shots there are little fish ponds to stare at, and a great Cafe. It's built in the middle of a neat new city with a Lobster House and Outlets galore nearby. So my recommendation is get in here and spend too much like the rest of us. A Mainer giving LL Bean a Yelp review? *shocking!* Whatever, it's just THAT great. I've been a Bean's fan since I was a kid. Growing up in Maine, it's every kid's dream to get THE LL BEAN BACKPACK. Eventually, if you're lucky, you graduate to a pair of Bean Boots. My first winter living in the big city (aka Portland), I decided to splurge on a pair of Bean Boots. They are an absolutely necessary item if you walk a lot in the wintertime. They're sturdy, essentially waterproof, and have enough space for several sock layers. I bought my boots at the Freeport location (of course), and the sales people are SO friendly and so patient. The service is very quick and genuine. They're so pleased to assist in any way they can. You can tell that the folks Beans hires are truly outdoorsy people that enjoy helping others. I also have bought several hiking items at this location, including a camping stove, gas to go with it, and a Camelback. Have no fear if you're unsure of what to get - the employees in the hiking section are so knowledgeable and helpful, they'll help you confidently purchase whatever it is you need. Some tips: if you want Bean boots, come and get them in the summer. By the time winter/Christmastime rolls around, they are in high demand, and you might not be lucky enough to snag a pair. Coming in the wintertime or evening is best - they're open 24 hours and are SLAMMED with tourists in the summer. Avoidance of humans is key! Be sure to plan a whole afternoon excursion for Beans. There are so many floors and buildings on this campus that it's a magical wonderland. Their free concerts in the summer are great too! And they have tons of parking! Ordered one of their LL Bean branded, high end pillows from the website. Pillow started losing feathers immediately and feels awful to sleep on. Bought under the lifetime warranty program in 2017 and LL Bean would not accept the return saying "they've never had a lifetime warranty program for 100% satisfaction." Um, yeah, okay--not what I was told when I bought the pillow or anything else prior to 2018. I even asked to be sure--"Really? I can return it for any reason? Even if I've used it?" Guess I don't need to buy anything from, IMHO, a deceptive company that makes overpriced, poor quality products anyway. I wanted to stop at LL Bean on the way to Bar Harbor from Boston. I had an LL Bean Backpack growing up, that just gave me fond memories of ordering from their catalogs. After parking, we finally made way to their campus. It is quite large, and I appreciate how they break up categories into separate buildings. We only visited one, which was enough for us as even the store with the clothes, bags, etc. is large enough with it being multiple levels! I enjoyed looking at everything, but unfortunately, the sizing availability in stores was just not great. I understand it caters to the average size women, but I like to try things on before I buy. Especially with LL Bean since they don't offer free returns, nor do they have any stores convenient in the south. I am usually an XS in most items there, but the store associates tried to get me to try on petite smalls since that would be very similar. Except they are really not. So that is my frustration in the fact they don't carry much XS in the store. The associates were very kind and helpful though, plenty around to offer help in such a large store! I was looking for a new raincoat over the summer and grabbed a more traditional rain jacket. A salesperson named Dutch recommended that I look at this lower priced, packable model. Being from Maine, I have been familiar with this store my entire adult life. It has been a business a Maine resident could be proud of, as its reputation preceded it. We always knew the prices were a bit high but they offered high quality products, high quality service, free shipping and a lifetime guarantee. I honestly can't tell you if the quality is still high, because as an older adult who lives on a lower income than I used to, I can't bring myself to pay those prices. Along the road trip to LobsterFest in Rockland, my family and I stopped in Portland and Freeport. Of course, it was only right to head to LL Bean at the outlet store. At first we went into one of the stores and I was underwhelmed. But, then realized there was a WHOLE other LL Bean store in the vicinity and that was very overwhelming! But in a good way. They offered more than just clothes - cooking supplies, and dishes. I wish we had time to go to the Outdoor discovery school and go kayaking but time did not permit. Maybe next time. I don't really come here except to relish in the enormity of the place. It's nothing like REI. The outdoor gear doesn't feel as plentiful and the prices are high. I've never seen a clearance for outdoor gear and don't really purchase anything else. Actually, because of the prices I don't purchase anything. They have an outlet where all their returned goods go, but its not really a steal there either since you still have to help pay for the space. It's fun to take visiting friends to because there's a couple of interesting things to see and do. Summer there's more going on, winter is empty and beautiful.
