Came here for an early birthday dinner with friends. Tried the mussels appetizer which was delicious, the coquille st. Jacques, and the potato soup which was filling and delicious. Portions were perfect for the three of us to share. Main course consisted of a filet Mignon which was cooked to perfection, lamb chops which were portioned nicely, and trout with lemons and almonds. The space is beautifully decorated for Lunar New Year and Valentines Day, and the music is nice. We had to wrap our desserts because we were so full but the chocolate truffle cake was so good! Baraka is cute and charming. Service is attentive and friendly. I love the choices on the prix fixe menus. French onion soup is very cheesy and filling. The fresh bread is served warm. My hanger steak was very tender even though it was more well done than medium rare. Love the Villeroy and Boch china, too. Jean Luc and Lucette, the owners, stop by and make sure you are satisfied with your meal. They were very helpful to my father in law who needs a walker. After 7 years, I finally had a chance to dine at this French / African Restaurant in Queens again. Ordered the daily specials but the server tried her best to incorporate them into the prix fixe menu with minimal price additions. La Baraka primarily serves a Complete Dinner with Salad, appetizer or soup, main course, dessert and coffee or tea for $43 and $48. It's pricey for Queens but the chef is outstanding and the price in line with the quality of the food. Our waitress incorporated the specials into the Prix Fixe meal for about $3.00 additional. The tables are nicely spaced and the service is cordial and personal. The meal begins with a small ordinary salad. Our appetizer choices were the Carrot Soup Special and the Vol-Au-Vent. The soup was excellent, the Vol-Au-Vent exceptional. Entrees were the Coq-Au-Vin and the Snapper Au Poivre special. The Coq-Au-Vin was fantastic as was the Snapper. Desserts were a fine Creame Caramel and an excellent Apple Tarte. Coffee was also included with complementary refills. The service was extremely friendly, cordial, attentive, and personal. The restaurant is well lit (no need to use your phone's flashlight to read the menu here) , the tables placed comfortably apart, the noise level low enough to easily have a conversation and the staff well versed in the menu items. Atmosphere: Older restaurant but cozy. It's outdated but clean and well-maintained. Service: Very welcoming and homey-like. One of the best places I've ever been to where I was treated so kindly and attentively. The owners came over regularly while helping out the staff. They're very old-school, which is great. Food: I went with three course dinner that includes salad which was $43. House salad which was ok and bread was warm, fresh, and amazing. Quiche Lorraine was served hot and flaky - Delicious, savory, and a great starter. For the entrée: canard a l'orange with peach. It was roasted perfectly and came with steamed veggies and rice. They even offered the other sauces (raspberry or orange) to try on the side. Super tasty and would recommend. For dessert, had the strawberry mousse cake and the profiterole filled with ice cream. The strawberry mousse hit the spot and wasn't overly sweet while the profiterole was traditional and had the right amount of hot chocolate sauce. Overall: I came here with my fiancée to try a new restaurant near us. The crowd is older and filled with regulars. The food isn't wow but it was average and well executed. Wonderful little cozy restaurant in little neck. As soon as you walk in, the owner greets you with her very warm and fuzzy personality. Great selection on the menu, has everything you want in a French bistro. The chef, I guess also the owner comes out to greet customers when he is not busy. I feel they are grateful for everyone that dines there, your patronage is appreciated. It was a cold night and the restaurant was more than half full. Warn bread was served with butter. The owners are lovely, service is fine, but the food is almost tasteless. Lamb needs garlic! Since the restaurant is part Moroccan they should know how to prepare it. My gf and I decided to try something new on a quiet sat night. Found this place on yelp and liked what we read. Once you walk in you instantly feel like you've stepped into grandmas house. Pink walls with stucco, paintings of flowers, antiques laid strategically around the restaurant and a cuckoo clock that looks as old as I am. This place was definitely not ordinary. Served along with some toasted bread and gherkins. The potato leek soup was silky and divine. Entrees: Boeuf Bourguignon was fork tender, very flavorful and decadent. The Duck ala Orange plated a half duck and had a wonderful duck flavor without being overly gamy. The orange sauce gave the perfect balance of sweetness against the richness of the duck. I saved my 143rd review for this lovely French restaurant. Our very first visit to La Baraka was for our anniversary 20 years ago. We held our baby shower here, and then we hosted our oldest child's first birthday in the early 2000 and invited a live string quartet to play classics as we dined and celebrated family, life and French dining. I also helped arrange an intimate wedding celebration for my best friend (older daughter's god mother) here over 10 years ago. It's a small place, romantic setting with nice décor. The owners are native French speakers, and value family. They take their time to get to know you and can alter the menu to your liking. They can also accommodate food allergies and provide a children's menu upon request. This French restaurant is one of the last standing traditional French restaurants left in NY. Don't get me wrong, there are many wonderful French restaurants around, but they are commercialized to modern day expectations and focus more on Instagram worthy accolades but this place is quaint and true. The chefs are the very owners that run the restaurant. They source their ingredients fresh and provide quality plates. The wonderful couple truly go over and beyond to cater to their guests and make them feel welcomed. They often have a prix fix menu, which offers an appetizer, entrée and dessert and coffee. The portions are average, so feel free to order a bit extra. They have private parking, its a small lot maybe fits 10 cars. Its at the end of the block and to the back. Not many signs directing you, but I have normally been able to find street parking. The experience at La Baraka is equal parts quality and comfort. If I can give them 10 stars I would. I am pleased to say the service and quality has stayed throughout the years and I plan on visiting them for as long as they remain open. This is a nice family owned place. The decor is like a grandmother's house with a charming grandfather clock that rang on the hour and half hour. There were cute pictures on the wall and delightful painted plates on the table that reminded you of eating at a sweet auntie's place. It is so cute that there are cheddar baked goldfish (ala Pepperidge farms?) on the table along with a small bowl of peanuts. What a homey welcome to the table. The rolls are baked on site and are quite delicious. To start is a small but very green salad with dressing that might have come from a supermarket bought bottle. Amazing flavor on the escargo. The meats were on the dry side, but the moist and delicious cous cous balanced that out. Desserts are rather good. I am just not overly impressed with the place because the meats were so dry and that should be the showcase dish. The pricing is pretty high for granny's house, but they were ok. La Baraka is a little family owned French-Tunisian restaurant located unassumingly on Northern Blvd. I've been a few times, and each time seems better than the last. There is no food experience in New York that I've enjoyed which is made with quite as much love and attention. The desserts are homemade. The fish is fresh and cooked carefully. The lamb is well seasoned and tender. I had a dish called the Couscous Royale on my most recent visit - a Tunisian dish that was amongst the most delicious meals I've ever had. There are few truly authentic culinary experiences left in New York, and that is a shame. All good things...must come to an end. I was a little saddened to find out the previous owners Jean-Luc and Lucette retired already. Our visits to this neighborhood gem are like going to friends' homes for dinner. We are going to really miss their smiles. It is their granddaughter Marie managing the place now. They should be very proud of how she carried on their legacy. On our recent visit, we had soup sampler (French onion soup, carrot soup, potato soup) and oysters as appetizers. All the soups were yummy good and the oysters very fresh. We had the quails and frogs legs as mains. They tasted great and good portions sizes too. My significant other especially liked the zucchini that came with the entrees. We took home our desserts (cheesecake and chocolate truffle cake) and opt for the special strawberry souffle. It is so gooood. The twilight menu also came with salad for less than $40. Specials are extra and our bill came out to around $120 before tax. It is well worth every penny. Last night we had the pleasure to celebrate our friend's 48th Anniversary. We couldn't have picked a better restaurant where comfort, ambiance and delicious food were exquisite and out of this world. 4 different soups and entrees all prepared and served to perfection ( filet of sole almondine, dorade, salmon and coquilles). We were touched by Jean Luc (the owner), Lucette (his wife) and staff who consistently displayed kindness, professionalism and at same time amicability. They made us feel part of their family. While eating I was admiring the French decor especially a beautiful frame of a gorgeous woman As we were leaving the restaurant I found that beautiful picture is of Lucette Sonigo who published a book: BEHIND THAT SMILE, a Memoir. Went here for my brothers birthday and I gotta say I was very impressed! This restaurant is so charming and elegant, the lights are dimmed just the right amount. It is a bit small but it gives you a nice private and homey feeling. The decor was lovely as it had French-African influence which stimulated our interest for the background history. This was the first time any of us has ate French-African food, it's different and we loved it! Starting with appetizers we had the french onion soup which is to DIE FOR. For all you onion soup lovers out there you must try this as it hits the spot. The cheese is perfectly cooked and the soup is not too oily, it had the right balance. And you get the nice burnt cheese part that hardens around the edge of the bowl - the best part. It is large enough to share for two but if you want to taste other soups you can go for the soup trio. Which includes the french onion, potato leek with dill, fish soup with crouton. My brother had this and he seemed satisfied. We also had to get the escargot, the presentation of this dish is ig worthy. As for the taste, it was very flavorful a tad bit on the salty side. Sadly it was my least favorite dish of the night. As for the entree I had the lamb chops and it was divine. The meat was so tender and it had the right seasoning- each bite was savory. As for the vegetables paired with the dish I was not impressed. It was bland and the potatoes were not even seasoned, good thing the lamb chops were enough to fill me up. So overall this place was lovely and we enjoyed most of the food we ordered. read more

I wanted to love this quaint beautiful restaurant, but the service was awful and the food was even worse. I understand the other reviews are very good -- I can't explain it. I found the food to be horrid. We nominally had two waiters, an Asian gentleman who was very nice and welcoming, and an older Caucasian woman who was cold, unwelcoming and generally very unpleasant to be around. She made me feel unwelcome. Her general demeanor was "This restaurant is the last place I want to be right now". My wife is much less sensitive to this kind of thing than I am, and she felt similarly. For example, she looked pained when I asked her to repeat one of the day's specials, and she quickly mumbled the special again. I couldn't hear what she said, so gave up on ordering the specials. Decor is beautiful. The restaurant looks like it's been here for a long time. Seriously exquisite. Don't think I didn't notice the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec prints on the wall -- I've had a couple commissioned as 4x6 paintings that are hanging up in my living room! I love the sound the floor makes when you walk on it. The rug. The walls. All of it, beautiful! This place has ambiance! On to the food. I didn't actually eat or see the escargot, but someone in the restaurant must have ordered them because I sure did smell them, and WOW, did they smell terrific! Garlic galore! It smelled like a garlic festival! French Onion Soup: A An obvious high point. A truly spectacular onion soup -- I've never been to France, but my mom certainly has, and she concurs with other reviewers: the French onion soup rivals anything she's had in Paris. The Cheese is a Swiss (not Gruyere?) mozzarella mix. The Swiss provides the flavor; the mozzarella provides the baked on crust. The flavor and aroma from the cooked sherry is very strong. The soup itself is heaven-inspired, and the presentation with the baked cheese crust and crock makes this a *perfect* French onion soup. Potato Leek: C Potato leek soup should be a cream-based soup, but this was a vegetable puree. No creaminess at all. I couldn't taste any cream, potatoes or leeks. The only flavor was black pepper and dill... far, far too much dill. I didn't feel the need to eat more than a few spoonfuls of this dill vegetable puree. Yuck. Quiche Lorraine: C- Would have been an OK quiche: buttery, flaky crust and eggy. Most people (including me) prefer crispy bacon to dried out ham. Sadly, the crust was badly freezer burned. The freezer burn prevented me from enjoying the quiche, and in fact, I tossed out about half. Aside from the awful freezer burn, bacon would've provided a nice crisp and a little salty porky goodness to an otherwise bland and somewhat soggy quiche. Beef Bourguignon: C- I took two bites and threw away the rest. It was bitter and tasted of uncooked beer. The waitress claimed the chef didn't use beer in the bourguignon, but I used to brew beer... I know beer when I taste it, and this dish had the bitterness of a half-cooked malt beer. Disgusting. But aside from that, there was a complete lack of onion. I couldn't taste or see any onions in this dish. Caramelized cooked onions should provide a sweetness to the dish, and there was none to be found. Same goes for the pearl onions... And carrots... All these traditional bourguignon ingredients are supposed to provide sweetness to counterbalance the tannin from the wines, but were missing from the dish. Literally the worst Beef Bourguignon I've ever had in my life. Merguez: A- A very interesting (and delicious) merguez. I'm no merguez expert, but it seemed homemade to me. Reminded me of small sized homemade mombar, a north African (specifically Egyptian) sausage. Spicy and rustic. The closest sausage I can think of that most people will have eaten would be a homemade rustic chorizo. Pates Cheveux D'angel: B- It was very meh. It didn't have much flavor. I've had much better. More oil and aromatics like garlic and Romano would've gone far. I didn't actively hate it, but I wish we had ordered something different. Coffee: A- This was good. NYC is the only city you can spend $40/plate on a dinner and get lousy coffee. The coffee here is pretty good. Creme Caramel: B- Ummm... shouldn't this be "Crème brûlée"? Second of all, is your chef Mexican? Because we were served caramel flan! Don't get me wrong, I love flan, but, a) Flan is served in Hispanic restaurants and Crème brûlée is served in French restaurants, and b) this was obviously cooked from a mix. I can pick this up at the local supermarket for 99 cents. Please don't serve supermarket food. Gateau Au Fromage: B A good cheese cake. Definitely store-bought; not homemade. Nice crust, but just as with the quiche, the crust tasted a little freezer burned. read more
