    Lovely assorted beer selection
    Melissa P.

We came here to purchase taco meat for my sons birthday party and it was on point in their quality, taste and price for the portion/per pound. The meat wasn't too spicy either, so you can build it up with your cooking to your consumers preference. Everyone that ate the food from La Bodega all had nothing but good things to say; also compliments to our chef The market itself was also very appealing to all my OCD senses, as the store was completely stocked, clean and well versed in available items. I love coming here to also buy my limón y sal Fritos, because it's so hard to find them without the chile - as I am someone who doesn't handle spicy food well. I really liked their produce section - it was all very fresh and some came in bulk bags. They have a great and cold selection of Mexican beer too, our favorite kind of taste! Definitely take a stop in here if your in the market for Mexican/Hispanic food selection.

    Ceviche ($6.99 lb) very good

I was in the mood to cook my own Mex, but too lazy to drive to Santa Ana. The handy dandy Yelp app pointed me to La Bodega, on Beach & Slater in HB. Its in the same parking lot as one of my fave bars, previously reviewed Johnny's Saloon. I bought some carne asada ($7.99/lb), pollo asado ($2.79/lb) and shrimp ceviche ($6.99/lb). First of all, the carne asada was very good. It came in large pieces as it should, was marinated nicely, and cooked up great on the grill: 4 Stars. Secondarily, the chicken was tasty too. It too had a nice marinade, was super moist after grilling, and was a bargain: 4 Stars. Lastly, the ceviche was highly recommended, and flavorful also. It went very nicely on top of tortilla chips, and had a nice kick. It was so much better vs what you receive in an Americanized Mex restaurant: 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, its small, but packed w/ goodies. There is a table w/ samples as you walk in and a nice meat area to your left. Although the aisles are tight, its tidy in here. Additionally, there is a nice produce area w/ everything you need to compliment your taco feast. Lastly, they have taqueria size tortillas so you can pretend you operate your own taco stand: 4 Stars. Likewise, the staff is super friendly and helpful. They greeted me in Spanish, and appreciated that I spoke Spanish as well. Our conversations went from simple to more complex. The butchers and I appreciated a hawt customer (Disfrute la guerita: Enjoy the chick) - LOL!: 5 Stars. La Bodega is def on my list when I want some authentic Mexican meat to Q. Its close by, the staff is friendly, and the prices are real reasonable.

Cut fresh just for me & cooked up GREAT!

The first time I went in here I walked out. There wasn't much to choose from and the meat was really expensive. I just went in the other day and was very impressed to find taller shelves with lots of clean faces products. The produce department looked amazing for a lil corner/neighborhood Bodega. The meat case was clean and full and all the meat was bright in color. I got some thick cut pork chops. They cut them thicker for me while I waited because the ones precut in the case were a bit thin for how I wanted to cook them. They were delish! Quick stop, good for a mid week grocery trip!! Have most everything one would need to get dinner in the table!! They make good guacamole too!!

The store itself is smaller if you compare it with places like Shun Fat Westminster Superstore or Hòa Bình supermarket. There is only one checkout counter and the staff all seem to be Vietnamese. After walking around, they pretty much have all the basics covered. The focus is Vietnamese and Southeast Asian ingredients and sauces. They have their own seafood and meat counter with number tags where you can ask them to clean or cut fish, plus a small deli to go section. I also noticed their delivery vehicle outside that says wholesale, so it seems like they also supply restaurants in the area. Overall it feels like a neighborhood market that also does some wholesale business. The fresh section looked clean and there was no strong smell. I happened to see ground pork on sale for $2.49 per pound. The regular price was $2.79. Of course I had just paid $3.99 per pound earlier that day at 99 Ranch in Irvine because I wanted convenience. While we were there, a Vietnamese lady next to us was buying a big pile of meat and seafood and chatting with us while waiting for it to be cut. She said she always shops here. She ended up buying the last of the ground pork in the display. We asked if there was any left and the butcher said he had more in the back, so we immediately decided to grab two pounds. I think this place is perfect if you do not want to push a cart around a huge store and just need to pick up a few items quickly. They are open until 8pm. Next time I have more time I will come back and explore a bit more to see what other interesting things they carry. Inside, it has a decent selection of items. I didn't notice that usual strong fishy smell you sometimes get in Vietnamese markets from seafood or raw meat, so it felt fairly clean and well maintained. Seafood and meats looked fresh, but prices are higher compared to other Asian markets. The produce section looked fresh as well, just on the expensive side. There is a small prepared food section in the front for quick takeout. Even with the higher prices, it's still a convenient place to shop. Not too big, easy to get in and out, and you can find most basic things you need.

Having been to other Mitsuwa locations, especially the one in Torrance, I found this store to be very cramped and dark by comparison. I also had trouble finding many of the items I normally buy at Mitsuwa--they simply didn't seem to be stocked on the shelves. The prepared foods were another disappointment. The selection didn't seem nearly as appealing or extensive as what I've found at the Torrance location. I ended up picking up a few things, but was surprised to find that they were more expensive than similar items at another Japanese grocery store in the area, which I visited afterward. Overall, I'd choose the Torrance location over Irvine based on this visit. The Irvine store just didn't have the selection, atmosphere, or value I've come to expect from Mitsuwa.
