We enjoy this spot around the corn from the Sacramento zoo and Fairytale town. We dropped in for a quick bite after running around the park. Parking is convenient located in a shopping center. The restaurant offers tasty soup, salads, pastries, sandwiches of many kinds. The service very friendly and helpful to make suggestions. The kitchen staff are very quick to get the orders out. I joined my friends yesterday for lunch and it's crazy is I don't live far from this place at all. I will also say that I have never been to this location ever. It definitely appears to be a staple piece in the Land Park area. It felt more of a true neighborhood place to be if anything. I had the basil pesto chicken sandwich and spicy Thai chicken with rice soup combo. I also got a side deal with two pieces of that delicious baguette bread and a pink lemonade and Sprite mix drink. You have to try it if you haven't it is delicious the time of day that my friends and I came to this restaurant, was about lunchtime we got served fairly quickly, considering there was a crowd. Our food was delicious. I could tell by the various items my friends and I had we had all a little bit of everything. But hands-down, you know about that deal dip and bread then you know why La Bou is so popular! The ambience gives a more lunch counter type of environment, but it's a friendly, welcoming one. Now this is how I remember La Bou.. Same fresh pastries, especially their various croissants. Same delicious salads like their popular Chinese chicken salad and Asian noodle salad. My decaf iced latte was absolutely perfect and kept me going all day. The cafe employees are helpful with smiles, and my order was ready in less than 5 minutes. La Bou was a perfect little place for a snack after the zoo. Close and easy parking. I remember growing up seeing this and other La Bou locations and never going inside. Some of my friends parents would go weekly or daily for a coffee or for a sandwich at lunch. It definitely appears that La Bou is frozen in time! Everything was very reminiscent of the 90s for me, colors and equipment and seating/tables (except the register looked brand new). I kinda liked it. It's like a time capsule! They had tea, coffee drinks, pastries, and sandwiches. I believe salad too but I'm not a salad girl so didn't pay much attention. We ended up ordering a ham and cheese grilled and splitting it between my husband and I. It was piping hot, the cheese was so melty, and there was basil which I had never thought to add but it was delicious. We also got an iced mocha. My husband thought it was too sweet, but I think the espresso was just a softer flavor and not as bold, because it was just right sweetness wise to me. As for the salads I rotate between the house salad (the creamy dill dressing is so good), Chinese chicken salad, and La Bou chicken salad. The house salad has avocado, cucumbers, tomatoes, and crumbled swiss cheese. The Chinese chicken salad has a great flavored soy-sesame vinaigrette and the shredded chicken adds some protein. The La Bou chicken salad is a new favorite of mine because of the marinated chicken and included noodles. It's best to eat this salad the same day because the noodles don't store well. The food was not very good. They were out of a breakfast item my mom wanted, but I wouldn't down grade for that. It happens. My wife's BLTA was the only thing good. My breakfast bagel sandwich was very dry, and they used a panini press on the bagel for some reason. The avocado toast was soggy and limp. The coffee was ok. The service was pretty good. La Bou Restaurant is close by where I live. Some of the staff knows us by name. They are nice. The standout food is their daily fresh baguettes. My wife and I like the baguettes with butter and coffee. Very satisfying. For lunch, we like the large portions of the Chinese chicken salad, creamy tomato soup and fresh beef or smoked turkey on croissant or baguette sandwiches. Very fresh. La Bou is my jam. I've been coming to La Bou since I remember. Their regular iced coffee is still less than three bucks which is amazing in this economy. It tastes alright but I mostly just want the caffeine. They used to make pumpkin muffins which were bomb but I guess they weren't popular enough. They were to me. DIRTY - What is going on??? Granted, I hadn't been into La Bou for a while. I don't particularly love their food but it's convenient in a pinch. With that said, my salad was ok but I couldn't help notice how dirty the entire place was. This wasn't just after lunch crumbs, this was" been there for a while dust and dirt." The floor was filthy and there was what seemed to be a random partition and line ropes sitting by the case. The dust and dirt that was on all of that had obviously been there a long time. La Bou has been around for quite some time and yes, some locations need to update their decor. This location isn't the most updated, but in my opinion, it has the most atmosphere. Five tips for first timers: 1. It can get very busy, but don't let the lines discourage you. They take your order fast and food arrives in a timely manner. 2. Inside and outside seating. 3. Great neighborhood feel. Weekends, you'll find local families, skateboarders, cyclists, and fun run participants all having a great time. 4. Plenty of shared parking. If you're planning on going to the surrounding fun places like the zoo, Fairytale Town, or Funderland Park, don't risk parking here though. 5. Don't forget to sign up for their rewards program. Comparisons: I've tried the sandwiches and tomato bisques at both Panera and La Bou. La Bou wins this battle hands down. If you want more comfortable seating and more outlets to plug your laptop in, Panera is your place. But, I'll charge my laptop at home and opt for better food. But, do you have mouth-watering soft sourdough bread lying around? Probably not. They call it Sour Dough Round. It's basically a puffy hamburger bun style. Sandwiches are all about the bread and this subtle sourdough perfectly compliments the nuttiness of the pesto. Not a sourdough fan? Me too. I rarely order sourdough, but La Bou's is much more subtle and the softness of the bread cannot be matched. I've had Boudin's sourdough and I prefer La Bou. Tomato Bisque (Grade A): Creamy and not overly tangy. It's very good, full of flavor. Comes with a side of croutons. I don't know if the soup alone would make me drive here, but with a sandwich combo, it is a delicious meal. I did sneak a peak at the table next to me and they ordered the large soup and it is significantly bigger than the small that comes with the classic combo. I do wish the croutons were more substantial. They do appear to be house-made, but I prefer those chunky, buttery-infused croutons. Bottom Line: Lively environment, friendly staff, great location, and a fun, neighborhood feel. The food is very satisfying and a way better option than eating at the nearby zoo. Haven't been to La Bou in a long time and unfortunately, each time I come I am reminded it's not like it was back on the day. It's a decent lunch spot for soups, salads, and sandwiches, but food quality doesn't compare to how it was back in its hay day. These are our go-to items that we usually order: Thai Chicken Soup - is lacking flavor and aromatics it used to have. And there is more coconut milk in it now, but flavors are watered down. Complexity of flavors is just not there. Turkey croissant sandwich - the croissant is not the flakey fresh croissant you would expect. It seems production made and texture is more like a dinner roll. Chinese chicken salad - is ok. Asian noodle pasta- texture of the noodles are kind of over cooked, flat and not bouncy. And seemed to have too much noodle and not enough other ingredients. Creamy dill dressing for salad is still really good. That salad is yummy. We still enjoy the food, but overall not the way we used to. I just got back from this place. I ordered hot chocolate and substitute soy milk. It was a $1 up-charge ($5 total for small cup) and here I am having a stomach ache. I think real milk was used for my drink. I now have a stomach ache. I don't get stomach aches from soy, almond or oat milk. If you're going to sub and they up-charge--make sure you watch what they put in your drink especially if you have dairy allergies. This place charges a ridiculous amount for substitution and then they use milk. Wtf? No worries there were napkins to whip down and I had my person antibacterial. The counter gals and delivery gal were very nice and spirited. We sampled the following today: BLT Croissant: $6.49 a standard flavorful BLT on a soft buttery croissant. The bacon was smokey but not crispy enough and there wasn't enough lettuce to make the right crunch factor. This sammie is okay but I wouldn't order it again. Chinese Chicken Salad: $6.49 Large this is one of La Bou's most popular dishes and for good reason. A large container of shredded chicken, crispy lettuce, peanuts (on the side) celery combined with s sweet tangy Asian dressing-YUM. Soup and Sandwich Combo $8.49 a cup of soup and 1/2 sandwich. My wife got the Thai soup which was very tasty but served warm instead of hot. The soup contained chicken, mushrooms, cilantro, rice and was a little sour and spicy. The 1/2 tuna salad croissant was very good. Lots of tuna salad with a large amount of lettuce giving the the sandwich a really good refreshing crunch combined with the buttery sweet croissant. Mocha $4? Made a little bit sweeter than normal rich dark chocolate and french roasted expresso...mocha perfection for us. There are lots of nicer more trendy cafes around town but La Bou just does things right. The neighborhood is nice and quiet and you can tell by looking at the customers that everybody there was a regular. I ordered a cold HOUSE SALAD with dill sauce (large). I really really loved it so much. No regrets and it was so refreshing. It had a mix butter lettuce and iceberg. I think a few spinach leaves.
