Now I know where the real "genius bar" is! It's in the LCF! I feel so fortunate to have found Jack. He is like a tech artisan, very thorough, reasonably priced with a very fast turn around. I was in town visiting my sister when the hard drive of my Macbook Pro started going out. Being over 2,000 miles away from home, this was not the time to lose all of my work files! Jack is the best computer repair person I've ever met. Super friendly, knowledgeable and he saved my macbook! I received an update notice for the new OS Sierra on my macbook and while installing the software my computer just froze. I made the mistake of turning off the computer by holding down the power button but when I tried to turn it back on my screen went into this panic mode with the black screen and green codes. I tried taking it to the Apple store but they're always busy and told me to make a reservation before coming to the store. When I tried to make a reservation they were booked for the whole weekend. I decided to look on Yelp for computer repairs and I found Jack's business and I'm glad I did! I emailed him and explained what happened to my computer and he said he can fix it and told me to bring it in. I took my macbook to him and he told me it would be ready in a couple of hours and the price was very reasonable! I'm happy to say I'm Jack's first customer. I'm also a power-user, I process 100MB + photo files, produce and edit video and communicate real-time with associates worldwide over the Internet. My Mac is my livelihood. I've been a power-user since Macs were shaped like coffee pots, I know more about them than most techs. And needless to say, I've gone through a lot of them over the years. Jack is the most reliable Mac guy I've ever used. He's organized and if he says he's coming you can rely on it. He's also dogmatic, if he can't figure out your problem, he will spend days of his own time researching to find the answer and he always does. He's not going to come and just fix your machine, If he thinks there's a way to get more out of your equipment he'll suggest ways to do so. Sometimes the solution is not off the shelf, Jack has the rare ability to creatively put equipment together in ways the manufacturer hasn't even figured out. I needed a MacBook Pro monster for on the road photo shoots. I needed a machine with a lot of storage and faster processing speed for my large files in PhotoShop. There was not a laptop on the market with anywhere near what I needed. Jack took a new MacBook Pro, pulled out the DVD drive, added at solid state drive in it's place, then fused the existing internal with the solid state creating a 1.65 TB Fusion drive that boots up in seconds. The machine has a 399.2 MBs write speed and a 480.4 read speed. This is the most powerful MacBook on the planet; in fact it leaves my Mac Pro desktop in the dust, Apple hasn't figured this one out yet. I needed a new battery for my Late 2011 MacBook Pro, as the old one was basically on its way out. After requesting a quote through yelp, Jack responded to my message in less than 10 minutes with a reasonable price for a brand new original Apple battery. Jack allowed me to bring my MacBook the same day, and the battery swap was done in less than 15 minutes. After noticing that my MacBook start up time was slow considering I had done an HDD to SSD swap, Jack suggested that I turn off Firevault to increase the start up time and performance. My hard drive died a rather dramatic death late one night this summer. I called up Jack and had an appointment an hour later that same morning. I had a new hard drive (complete with updated MS Office suite) and my computer back by the end of the day. I cannot begin to say how much easier and less stressful this was than even attempting a trip to an Apple Store (even just having to park! Why did I pay for Apple Care? This is a much more pleasant and far less time-consuming option, plus the work is done on site). He was very patient answering my myriad of questions as well. And when the new OS was not working out for me, he graciously did the transfer back to my prior system. Which is also when we found out my external drive was dying! Yeesh, electronics are disposable. That makes me unhappy, but I am at least relieved to know there's a low stress option for Mac issues here. Jack returned calls very promptly, though usually answered the phone directly. I didn't feel like he tried to upsell or otherwise waste my time and money when I explained my needs. I appreciate being able to ask questions and get answers (again, not true at the genius bar other than the one time I got a supervisor). Bit of advice: when you think it's only been two weeks since you backed up your Time Machine, it may turn out to be more like 3 months. And you may end up without being able to retrieve that data. Word to the wise, folks, remember to back up. The shop is in a converted garage in a lovely neighborhood. Keep driving on La Porte to get to the parking and entrance for the shop (there's a sidewalk A-frame sign as well as signage on the garage). It looks very clean and very Apple. I would give Jack 6 stars if I could. I was borrowing my wife's laptop and thought she had backed it up before I tried updating to High Sierra. It froze mid update for hours and I panicked and rebooted only to find that the computer was in an endless loop of restarting and going to a kernel error screen. Of all the clumsy things I have ever done in my life, stepping on my macbook air takes the cake. Okay, once, when I was in high school, I also accidentally tripped and fell into a public fountain.
