I took my Mac Book Pro to Apple and they thought the screen was broken and the motherboard was kaput, based on making me wait 45 minutes for an appointment at the Genius bar and then plugging in my computer without finding a 'signal.' Quote: $600 plus one week. They said they could wipe out my data if they fixed the motherboard, so they wanted me to go someplace else for data backup. Quote: at least $400. If you're counting that's $1000, two stops, and one week. I didn't feel right--gut instinct it was just the screen. Took it to Technoland next. For $425 tax included, I got my computer back in ONE HOUR. New screen. He even started backing up the data for me on a USB with an adapter which he gave me to take with and finish the job. I needed to have the hard drive removed from 2 HP desktop PCs and 1 laptop HP. All with MS Windows. There was no problem getting the job done. The owner would have the job finished in a couple of hours, but I was busy, so I told him I would come back the next day. The gentleman offered to remove the photos from the drives, for me to have. Everyone (at least 5 other places) else told me I needed a new screen (pricey), but Steve was able to fix an internal cable and turned off the touch-screen feature which solved the flickering screen display.
