While the server was pleasant, I have been here for an hour and have asked for a water four times to no avail. Aside from myself there are two tables in the dining area, my last margarita arrived with a few bugs in it. Instead of saying "so sorry, we will take it off" the answer I got was "sorry we can't take it off because we already closed your tab".(I hadn't even signed the check yet) Which is fine.... I guess because I could have just been given a refund on my credit card...but they brought the remake and it STILL had bugs in it, and they taste like water for the price they are. I had planned to order food but I'm sure that would have taken a long time to even be submitted. I DO NOT recommend this place. read more

I was debating on 2 or 3 stars because the signature drink was delicious but the food was terrible. I had high hopes because the pictures looked good but the food was dry and bland. I expected more being that I was in San Antonio but it was disappointing. I ordered the el botanero appetizer and the sausages were flavorful and juicy. The quesadilla were basic and the chicken flautas were dry as heck. From the outside shell to the inside. It was dry all around. The plate was not worth $35. I then got the carne asada tacos and arrachero tacos- the carne asada was hard and dry while the arrchero were too thickly sliced and bland. Don't get me started on the enchilada mole.. I already figured that since the chicken in the flautas were dry and bland, this would be too and sure enough it was. The staff was nice except the food runner who had a pissed off look on her face anytime you asked her for something or she was bringing something to you. She really was just unpleasant and killed the mood. Our server was very nice and polite. The food I'm sorry to say doesn't live up to the price or the hype. The chicken in the enchiladas was so bland. They should be ashamed serving that fideo and calling it fideo. Tomato soup - that's what it should be named. The panela came with no tortillas and when you ask for tortillas you were given two small ones at a time. I think this place probably has a big crowd at night around the bar. Beautiful restaurant and great service. However, this is the second location I have visited and the food does not match the vibe of the restaurant at all. The food is awful. No flavor. Esquites is a make your own thing and is so runny. Husband got the chicken taquitos and the chicken was rotten. To the point you could smell it. No way the cook could not smell how rotten it was. The vibes here are great, and the food is overall above average, but it is pretty pricey and not worth the cost in my opinion. Service was also on the slower side, and it took a while for the food to come out and to get the check. (Don't come here if you want a quick bite to eat/drink.) I got the Chile en Nogada, which was a sizable portion of a stuffed pepper that was covered in a creamy sauce. The flavors were balanced and the sauce wasn't overpowering of the pepper nor filling--overall very yummy. However, I don't think it's worth the $28 price tag. This restaurant is very accommodating to large groups though, so if you are looking to book parties of 10+, this is a prime spot. read more

We had to ask three different times for more chips before they were finally brought to us. We also only ordered tacos and it took a good 30 minutes before our food came out to us. I could understand if the restaurant was packed, but it was not. It's a weekday and plenty of tables. Maybe they're short staffed? However it did seem like enough people working. It looks upscale and nice, it is and the price does reflect it to some extent considering its Mexican food which you can find in larger quantities for less money. I will say that food and drinks we've had here were very tasty and staff was great. Service 5 Ambience 4 Food 3 I REALLY wanted to love this place. From its website and menu, I was excited to be transported back to Mexico, specifically to Oaxaca, home of mezcal. However, the dishes I ordered - caldo de camarón and a quesadilla with chapulines - fell very short of my expectations. I've had both dishes before and shrimp soup is one of my favorite Mexican comfort foods. Chapulines add a nice crunch ( for obvious reasons ) to any meal. But both were shockingly very bland. I finished my soup, which had lovely vegetables and tender shrimp but otherwise a blah soup base. I could not finish the quesadilla, however, because it lacked palatable seasoning. It was akin to what one would make at home with store bought shredded cheese. Usually chapulines are spiced and chopped up; these were neither. My husband's order - 2 different quesadillas - seemed to have more character but I did not sample them. (He will honestly eat anything if it doesn't contain meat or eggs.) Great location, great service, great drinks, but if I come back I'll need to try something else. read more

What a hidden gem. Located in a prime location right next to the Alamodome. Perfect spot to get drinks before a game. Plenty of parking if it's not a game day. We visited on a Saturday at 6 PM and it was empty. Only one other party was eating at the moment, but got busier once we finished. Great restaurant for groups. Large selection of drinks that included tequila, Mezcal, and rum options. Our waiter Karen was super attendant and gave us plenty of recommendations. I would say the restaurant was more authentic Mexican than Tex-Mex. Highly recommend starting with the salsa Trio, as it was a variety of different salsas that pack plenty of flavor ranging from hot to mild. Very disappointing experience! My girlfriends and I had been wanting to go to this place for a while and we ended up going on Thursday Banda night. We should've left since the beginning considering that they were trying to overcharge us an entrance fee! They were charging us $25 even though the instagram said $15! The beer selection was slim! We asked for dos xx, they were out so we ended up ordering Tecate light but by the end of the night they ran out of that too! My girlfriend also ordered drinks and we're not good at all!! We ordered mini tacos but they were super greasy and the tortilla was hard! And to top it off they charged us a gratuity! We were only 3!!! I asked the manager and he stated when there is "events" they charge gratuity! I understand when there is a party of 6 or more but 3! Never has that happened to me in any restaurant! $20 tp park,minus one star. I'll admit if everything else was better I'd gladly pay to park but,me no likey. After a week on the road in the pleasant high plains desert of Texas,I descended back into San Antonio to start my civilization readjustment. Maybe that's not the best time to get back in the vehicle after a long day and go find a restaurant in the busy part of town. However,that's what I did and the food was good but not great. This seems to be an " it" spot, especially with a younger crowd. Very loud,including a broken front door that kept reverberating every time someone came and went. The space does a good job of implying upscale without investing in legit upscale. As a result it's not at the comfort level for the price point. The food isn't quite a match for the price point either. Dishes tend to be alla cart and as a result for example, my rellano while delicious was too expensive to have no sides . Overall this place was not happening for me. I really wouldn't expect them to last long if they don't make some adjustments. read more

Loved this place. It well represents the flavors of Central Mexico. It is definitely a huge step up from the usual Tex-Mex fare in San Antonio. This is elevated Mexican food. We loved the salsa sampler, especially the house salsa, which is a chili-crisp style of salsa with smoky and sweet chili flavors. We also had the queso fundito with chorizo and the Solomillo Bistek tacos. This place is a little off the beaten path but well worth the short walk from the Riverwalk to get some great Mexican cuisine. read more

This is a follow up post as we went again to try more items on the menu. We stuck with the chicharrones Arracheras and the Camarones Cuiche because we enjoyed them so much last time we were here. We ordered Tuetanas as an appetizer and we're so glad we did! It came with corn tortillas that were a little greasy and an excellent companion to the bone marrow. The addition of the sirloin chicharrón and garlic butter made this bone marrow stand out from other we have tried. This time we also ordered mole enchiladas because they were on our list to try the previous time. I regret to say that I didn't love them. The chicken was very dry. The mole sauce was sweet. I liked it but others at my table felt it was too sweet for their liking. The Pulpo was delicious. It was well seasoned and cooked well. As before, our server, Maria, was helpful in suggesting options. She was friendly and very mindful of taking care of us. This time we sat in the main dining area instead of the bar. I preferred the high top tables in the bar area but the main dining area was great for families. I'm already planning my next visit! read more

Nice fancy place. I went in the afternoon and it gave me fancy night vibes and everyone was dressed fancy. Love those vibes. Small restaurant and very tight on seats. The food was good but in my opinion too expensive for the flavor or portion size. The mini tacos I got were good and the salva was spicy which I loved & it was around $10 for 4. Music was good and a lot of Spanish songs played. Very clean restaurant and polite staff. The Views were pretty and again looked fancy. Summary: uneven food, poor service, nice facility and location. Bichos - Fried mixed bugs! Tastes like fried dried chiles, crunchy texture. The table's consensus was that it was ok. Best comment: (pulling something out of his mouth) "oh it's a cilantro leaf. I thought it was OK that's the best country OK I said who a wing or something." The fried scorpion was just crunchy - no special sting. Beautiful courtyard and very close to the stadium. Order the salsa sampler with fresh fried tostitos. $5 of deliciousness and a great appetizer, it's a bargain. The cup of corn is tasty but not better than real street corn. I wouldn't bother with it again. The queso fundido is yummy, though. The shrimp soup is ok but not amazing. Needed salt. Tasted like hot Mexican shrimp cocktail with potatoes and carrots. Fideo soup was better. Shrimp Caesar salad was on spring greens instead of romaine. The salad couldn't hold up. The shrimp were overcooked but tasty. The octopus pastor was the best entree. Great flavor and well cooked. The pastor tacos and green enchiladas were ok. The fideo seco was well flavored but not a favorite, although the plating was beautiful. The $16 puff pastry and ice cream dessert was ok. Tasty but not particularly interesting. Nothing other than the octopus was really special or any better (and often worse) than our favorite local hole in the wall family-run Mexican restaurant and others like it. Not worth the price IMHO. The ice tea didn't have free refills. Really? On the downside, service is atrocious. One of our dishes was completely forgotten. Plan for a long meal and lots of patience. Friendly service, just unprofessional kitchen and front of house. Not recommended. read more

Great environment! I went for Despecho Night when they had banda playing. Honestly, the $15 cover was too much for what it was, should've been $5 or even free. I got the botana sampler and it was really good, definitely worth the price for the amount of food. The drinks were tasty, but the alcoholic ones were more like juice, barely any kick. This place is a modern take on Mexican classics (ex. bone marrow elote) and does some things really well. We came with a reservation and were seated quickly. We all went for something different, and really, there were no major complaints. I got the wagyu tacos, octopus a la brasa (on the grill), and special Cuishe elote (aforementioned). I also got to try their shrimp tacos, special rice, octopus chicharrones, and special garlic shrimp which was a popular item. Octopus is one of my favourite things, and they knew how to do it right in both styles -- anyone who tried it off my plate was in love (and jealous). Everything else was just kind of fine -- the wagyu tacos weren't as tender or buttery as I was expecting, the shrimp tacos were fine, the special rice was a bit bland, and the "special garlic shrimp" was a bit overcooked. I was most excited about the elote, but was a bit disappointed because the flavour wasn't well distributed so you really had to dig into the bone to get any of the marrow to fall onto the corn, but it just didn't work out well for the payoff. All in all, a fine experience at one of the fancier restaurants, but the food left a lot to imagination. read more

My best friend and I chose this spot to celebrate my birthday. I celebrate all week so this was dinner #2 this week. We drove around looking for valet but then got lucky and found a parking lot just right around the corner. We had made a reservation so we were seated right away. Our table was wobbly but then we fixed it. The vibe was amazing, there was a couple next to us having such a great time as well. We ordered a lot. We started off with the 6 shots, mango flavor. We had the chips and 6 different toppings to include 4 different salsas, mild to extra spicy, guacamole and black beans. Amazing starter. We also had the queso fundido topped with mushrooms instead of chorizo, highly recommend. And we had the original Esquite. For our entrees we ordered Bichos, never had them before, but to me they tasted like lucas. We also ordered several different tacos options to try and the bone marrow. For dessert, they brought out the carlota de cajeta, amazing. We needed the night with carajillos which were prepared in front of us and tasted amazing. Top 3 best tasting carajillos I've had. Cuishe was pretty cool. I was there with a group of chefs for an event after eating 2 meals prior, so was not exactly hungry, but thats the way it goes when on a food tour of a city. Cuishe started us off with guacamole with crickets known as Chapuline which was kindoff distgusting with a musty favor and bug legs that get caught between your teeth and an intriguing crispyness. The mecal selections was awesome as were the cocktails. The food was definitely elevated and they were trying very hard to impress, so kudos for that. Id go back to experience it again given the opportunity. They were definitely doing some cool Oaxacan and Yucatan style foods. Worth going for sure. read more

This place has been a tradition for me and my customer for the last 3 years. We arrived excited to continue our tradition of happy hour sampling tequilas and apps and authentic Mexican dishes. We even invited 4 others from the night before after boasting about how much we enjoy this restaurant. We arrived around 4:55pm to find the doors locked, even though the hours on the door said they were open. As did their website. We called (no answer), I looked through the window and could see a bartender and waitress. Eventually the door magically became open. We went in, were seated, handed menus, that looked different. We asked where the tequila menus were. The waitress said they weren't doing that anymore. But they still have tequila, we asked about happy hour on tequila, she told us they don't do that anymore. Also we noticed the menu was different. We asked if they had a different menu. The waitress told us they changed the concept at this location. The owners felt that most customers preferred faster food as they were in the city to go to concerts or events. So they added nachos, burgers, and... hotdogs which (allegedly) were popular. I can honestly say at no point in my life have I gone to an authentic Mexican restaurant and said "man, these tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc are ok. But you know what I really want? A Mexican hotdog!". Wtf? And to prove how silly that is. The place was empty, if the customers like it so much. Why is there no one here? All the other years it was quite busy. After debating for a while if we wanted hotdogs and hamburgers. We decided to go elsewhere. We called the other location even though it was a half hour away. Luckily we did, they also changed their menu. We ended up at Luz Roja, not the great tequila list Cuishe used to have. But the food was excellent. Unless they go back to the old menu, we won't be back. Very disappointed. read more

Not good... We walked into an empty restaurant and they were slow to help us and dismissive when we didn't have a reservation. Not sure we were liking the vibe so we sat in the bar. The place looks great, but was lacking in service and flavor. The Al Pastor was dry with no seasoning, just had a little onion and pineapple added to it. Likewise the Carne Asada was bland with no seasoning or flavor. The beer was warm and a small glass with a bad pour. The margarita was a small glass and almost all ice. Understand I'm the guy that will drop $200 on myself for a dinner every night we go out, and not blink. So this isn't a "we couldn't afford this" problem. It was more, "why would we want to". Almost $20 with tax for 3 of the smallest tacos you have ever seen. They come on the small mini tortillas. Check photos. No sides or anything included. No chips or salsa before hand to make up for the small portions. We paid $30 for a plate of 3 bone borrow with some dry cheap steak meat on top. I love bone marrow normally. Issue is, only the middle one had anything in it. The ones on each side of its gaps were so small they were 98% empty. So we basically paid $30 for a single bone marrow with some dry steak. For the woman's 3 mini tacos that she fit all three in her hand easily at the same time, my 3, and the one bone marrow, it was $75 with tip. Nice place with nice people, but tons of places around with better food, and better prices. read more

Came here late afternoon for a "snack" per my friend. I made the reservation the same day as I was visiting my friend that was in San Antonio for a conference. The restaurant was a bit far away from the river walk and in the quieter area of time? Sorry, I'm not from San Antonio so I can only speculate. We came at a off time so the restaurant was rather quiet. The bartender was the one taking care of our drinks and food. The drinks were delicious and the food was rather amazing. We ordered the guacamole, beef tongue and octopus per the bartender's recommendation. It's definitely not the traditional tex mex restaurant as there were bugs on the menu. It's definitely a beautiful place for a date or just to take a friend out to enjoy the evening. read more
