Ohh La Boulangerie, what can I say but delicious. A cute spot on Broadway in downtown San Antonio. Sylvie the owner is originally from Western France and moved close to Paris then came to San Antonio. Their baking ingredients are sourced from France and the recipes are from her and her husband. And they're a local restaurant which I love supporting! We had the Petit Dejuener Deluxe breakfast which includes one pastry (either a croissant, chocolate croissant or bread pudding), a baguette (with either butter, homemade jam or honey), organic fresh eggs made to order or quiche slice, fresh squeezed orange juice and a yogurt with granola and fresh fruit and a black coffee or tea. It's a great option for those unable to decide on what to eat for breakfast. They have sandwiches, individual baked goods, à la carte items and hot and cold drink options as well. I really wanted to love this place.. The cafe is really nice and feels cozy. It was a small cafe but the way they had decor and stuff on display gave it a home vibe. Me and my friend went on a Sunday around one so it wasn't really busy. They don't have much baked jtems but we opted for the macaroon box which had 6 different flavor of macaroons for $18. They were so good. I only tasted 3 but deff worth it for a try. The lemon flavor was my favorite. As soon as you get to the center of it you feel a burst of the sour tartyness. The raspberry was also good it had a mix of sweet and sour but it wasn't overpowering. The last one I tried was the Carmel. I had mixed feelings about it because I love that you can taste the deep Carmel flavors but oh my was it super sweet. I had to drink my water as I was eating it to help flush it down. I love sweets but that was to much. Now for the customer service part.. we weren't greeted and the cashier seemed to be either in a mood or a rush. But as I mentioned it wasn't busy. My friend tried pronouncing Cannelle and the lady came off so rude about it. My friend apologized for not knowing the pronunciation and then pointed at the pastry she wanted. The lady kept trying to correct her and just look so annoyed. Then she rang us up and proceeded to walk away before we even paid. She didn't say anything she just walked away.. Definitely a hidden gem downtown! A bit off the normal path, but worth the few extra steps lol We had a few pastries to include the chocolate almond croissant and chocolate croissant -- both flaky, buttery, and delicious! We both had a cappuccino and my only issue was that it was not super hot (I should've asked) since I know some restaurants don't make the coffee as hot as I like it. OMG, the best pastries of my life from here! It is not often that I find a bakery that does chocolate and almond in a croissant so when I find my two favorite flavors in one pastry, I always buy one. It was AMAZING!! Hands down the best croissant I've ever had (no I have never been to France but I'm a good baker and a pastry snob as a result.) I also had the kouign amann (pastry cream with tart cherries on top) and it was delicious as well. We ate at the competitor bakery around the corner the day before and it was good but La Boulangerie was SO MUCH better! It's a small place and can get busy but it is worth the extra couple minutes walk past the super touristy places. You won't regret it. That chocolate almond croissant will live in my dreams until the next time I'm in San Antonio! But pastry and coffee, this place hits it out of the park! Everything is made in house! It's a French bakery and when I say French, I mean it's really French. The owner works in house and moved here from Paris. She has all ingredients imported in from France. Freshest ingredients and real ingredients, down to the flour! It's not on the riverwalk so you have to walk a bit but it is soooooo very worth it. My wife and I are in San Antonio to celebrate our 15 year anniversary. We wanted breakfast and walked about 15 minutes from our hotel to this breakfast spot. Not knowing how great it was going to be. I have come two days in a row, the food is excellent. They have a set breakfast, which I had the first day. The pastries, bread, and even the jam were made here, and the pastry was light and airy, just like in France. Family that owns it is from Paris, and very gracious and friendly. The reviews are accurate! This gem is phenomenal! 10/10 for quality of food! The staff are friendly and take your order as soon as you are ready, there is plenty of seating inside, and it is clean. It's downtown, so parking is......not great....but just plan to get your morning walk in or Uber your over. The pastries are fresh, the bread is baked in house and I wish I could have tried more food than I did. I have already made plans to return with friends next weekend :) The pastry was perfectly sweet, not overloaded with sugar but not dry, like what you would find at Panera. The baguette was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The tomatoes and basil were freshly chopped and the portions in the sandwich were perfect. Excellent french cafe located downtown that is easily accessible from most hotels. This was the first place we visited. The iced coffee was both hydrating and energizing. I thoroughly enjoyed the fruit tart. There was a light ganache later between the crust and pastry cream. A French radio station was streaming in the background. My friend from France called me the other day to tell me I should try something called a "King Pie" or "Gallete des Rois". This seems to be something similar to a king cake with a small surprise (mini stature/ baby) inside and is a special treat made in January. She had looked up bakeries/ patisseries in San Antonio that would be making them and suggested I visit La Boulangerie. I called in advance on a Thursday to make sure they would have it on the Saturday I was planning to stop by. The woman assured me that if I came in the morning that they would! I tried to call the morning of as well, but couldn't get an answer. When I arrived on Saturday morning and went inside, I was surprised to see how dirty the place was overall. Each table had a mess left on it and it didn't leave me wanting to dine in. I quickly went to the counter to order the treat my friend suggested and was unfortunately told they decided not to make them for the weekend. After driving 30+ minutes just to get it... it was very frustrating. While the items in the display case did look delicious, I wasn't interested in trying anything else in a place I wouldn't be willing to sit down at (dirtiness). It's a little bit eclectic - as in odds and ends for furniture, decor, menu tableaus and such... everywhere. It's a bit of French attitude - as in they aren't going to accommodate your special requests like butter and a knife to spread it with over a croissant - too happily. The butter they give you is cold and hard and basically unspreadable anyway. And with good reason! The croissant needs no butter!! It is almost as buttery as butter itself. It's a morsel from heaven! But if you're expecting marmalade with that croissant, you're out of luck. You SHOULD have ordered it when you ordered the croissant. And it's gonna cost you extra, btw. Who knew?! Avoid having any extra requests, cause you're going to have to go back and stand in line behind the 30 other people who have arrived and are waiting for the one harried woman who is taking and dispensing orders, while also overseeing the kitchen staff and interacting with vendors, AND taking calls. "Understaffed," is an understatement. The woman has a good reason to be grumpy. What's not justified is the owner's attitude. It's a husband and wife team - he's lovely - friendly, kind and helpful. She's aggressive, hostile and will bite your head off if you ask her for anything. She nearly verbally assaulted me when I asked her to check on my sandwich after 35 mins of waiting. They're understaffed and busy - neither of which are the customer's fault. Those are her issues to solve. We used to love it here, even when she was just cold and just didn't smile. Very hard to see that it's even there from the street. But once inside, the people and atmosphere are charming, and the chocolate almond croissants werebetter than those we had in Paris. Seriously.
