This place used to be really good. Wonder what happened? I used to come by for margaritas and Mexican on Sundays to watch the Bronco game on TV. I haven't been there for a few years. I went a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. I came in around 2pm and there was no one to take my order. After waiting for about 5 minutes, a customer told me that she had "stepped out" for a minute. No problem. After almost 15 minutes, the nice lady from the kitchen came out and went looking for her. When she came strolling back in, she seemed irritated that she had a customer. A few minutes after I got my order, I politely asked if she could turn on the Bronco game. She rolled her eyes and said "if I can" but I'm not sure what that meant because she didn't turn it on. No one in the bar was watching the tennis match or the other football game, so this should not have been a huge deal. I went back up the counter and politely told her what channel it was on. She rolled her eyes again and proceeded to put on the game and made a snippy comment about the TVs to the customers at the bar. I thought, we're in a bar in Colorado, why wouldn't they have the game on? They used to play the games without having to ask to put it on. As I ate my lunch, I overheard her talking to the customers at the bar about how irritating customers were to her. She went on and on for about 10 minutes complaining. I thought maybe someone should tell her how to properly handle customers. If she doesn't like working in a bar with TVs and customers, she should find another place to work. The food was good and the margarita was good. However, the young woman's attitude will stop me from going back. I'd rather pay a little more for food than deal with someone who acts like it's an imposition to be nice to people. read more

It's a bit of a Dive, but thats kinda rare in Vail; and what good Mexican joint isnt? Enjoy it for the ambiance. The food was fine. I've had better, but at that price, I've definitely had worse. We were passing through from a tourist spot and saw that we were coming up on Vail. We'd heard of Vail and thought it would be nice to make a short stop to look around. We were just going to use the bathrooms in the visitor center but the food smelled great and it was lunchtime. Great prices, fun atmosphere, free chips and salsa, and this was much better than the meal we had at another Mexican restaurant days before. My son loved his grilled cheese and bacon sandwich, too. This place is a "MUST STOP" when in (or passing through) Vail! My wife and I were a bit skeptical of the parking garage location, but pleasantly surprised by the service, and excellent quality and value of the food. Our lunch consisted of the chicken soft tacos, and the El Gordo burrito (a massive combination of shredded chicken on one end, and shredded beef on the other). Absolutely delicious! We also chose several different freshly made complimentary salsas from the salsa bar to scoop chips (the habanero salsa was flavorful and HOT!). The margaritas are tasty too. Best Mexican food restaurant in a parking structure I have ever had! The combo plates, namely the taco and 2 enchiladas plus rice and beans, are good. The food is not the best I have ever had, but it's tasty, filling and inexpensive, in a place where everything is expensive! I asked Bradden, the clerk, once what he liked, and he recommended the Cod Burrito. It is fried cod, cabbage and a white sauce, and did not disappoint. The California Burrito is great, and you can't go wrong with a California. The Macho Burrito is huge, smothered in red sauce and will kill you if you finish it. The salsas are fresh and tasty, although inconsistent. I don't think the same person makes them everyday. But they are still good. First of all, if you don't know where it is then it can be a little tough to find. Don't type the address into the GPS like we did when we first moved to town. La Cantina is located on the main level of the Vail Village visitor parking structure, or the "transportation center." My recommendation is to park in the parking structure and walk into the restaurant, or take the intown bus to the "covered bridge" stop (also known as transpo center stop) and walk up to the second level where the restaurant is. This place is known for their fair prices (3 tacos and a drink ~$10). This is rare, especially considering its proximity to Vail Village. This place has good margaritas. I recommend grabbing a couple friends and ordering a pitcher. The chips and salsa are great. They give you a personal basket of chips and allow you to select from an assortment of sauces. My personal favorite is the beef tacos (more like pork instead of typical ground beef). Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to describe the food as world-class, but for a quality meal at a can't beat price I'd recommend hitting up this place. The atmosphere is a little weird b/c it's in a transportation center, but once again the good food + great price makes La Cantina a great option. read more

The Cantina is definitely Vail's best kept secret. I have waited years to write a review, because I'd like for it to stay that way (but others deserve to know about the deliciousness)! The margaritas are the best in town, and the food is top notch. The mahi mahi burrito is my favorite menu item, but I switch things up every once in awhile (and I have yet to be disappointed). The mini carnitas burritos are a close second fav. For a dollar or two, you get unlimited chips and salsa (of which there are 5 varieties) - that's the best value in Vail, by far. The location leaves very little to be desired, but that's really part of the Cantina's charm. It's nestled in between the transportation center, the post office, the parking garage and the public restrooms. It's loud, it can be congested, and it's often drafty during the winter. Again, all part of the Cantina's charm. The food comes super fast, and the employees are always laid back and eager to please. This place used to be the best, BUT has severely fallen off in the last couple years. This is mostly do to new chefs that aren't concerned about making great food with quality products anymore. Ordered the Spicy Carnitas Burrito today and it was a major let down. Burrito was supposed to have shredded pork, rice, guacamole, and a spice chilli sauce. What I received was a burrito with rice and pork fat. No Guac, No Chilli sauce, and the pork looked to be 70% white pork fat and maybe 30% meat. On top of that was the size of the burrito. These things used to be huge, this one was smaller than one of the frozen burritos you can buy at the supermarket/gas station (and were talking the cheap normal sized ones, not jumbo or extra long). But this time it didn't really matter as I could only eat 3 bites before I started dissecting it and realized the let down. And the other annoying thing is the kid working the counter saw this happening and didn't even say anything as I threw it away in the trash can in front of him.. Save you money and go to Qdoba down in west vail, which is sad to say but 100 time better If you do decide to dine in, beware if a small, slender, young, hispanic, hipster looking kid is making your food. The best Mexican restaurant in Vail! The food is MUCH better that Los Amigos just a few blocks away and MUCH cheaper. We eat here regularly and walk out with a good meal and a couple of drinks for around $20-30.
