Three cheers for being seriously affordable in Vail! I had the Carnita and Mahi Mahi Tacos. The CARNITA is delicious! WOW. Five stars. Get that one for sure. The Mahi Mahi was also good but not as great as the pork. Gotta give it up to the pig. Tacos come with guac, lettuce, and pico which is great. All of their tacos can be made gluten free. Hubs had the relleno and enchilada combo which he enjoyed- but methinks he was rather jealous of my carnita. Chips and salsa are free and there is a salsa bar for your endless trips. The medium salsa in the biggest container is not good. It has oregano in it so resembles a pasta sauce in taste. The Tomatillo is very good and the Arbol chile salsa is also good but pretty darn hot. It's tough to find and it is in a bus station but hey, maybe that's why the rent is cheap and they don't have to charge an arm and a leg for tacos. The house marg is only ok- they use silver tequila. Sundays they can be found at the Farmers Market with their pork on a rotisserie looking mighty tasty...perhaps that is why it is so good! read more

Order from the register, not table service. Even so, we stood at the register for what seemed like minutes while being ignored. We were given chips, but not actually told they were for us, chips just happened to be placed on the counter. Food was cheap but unimpressive, def worse than Chipotle or Qdoba, e.g. Too loud music blared from some employee or manager's iPod, which was annoying. If you are staying in Vail on a vacation and looking for good food, pleasant service, or a nice restaurant atmosphere, go elsewhere. Well la cantina, it is what it is, a Mexican food place in a parking garage in Vail Colorado. Nonetheless if you don't want to spend 200 dollars on lunch for a family of four in this town la cantina is a viable choice. We have been here several times and each time the jam band music is cranked, Wide Spread Panic, and Mexican food...hmm it works. The atmosphere is horrible but yet a perfect display of Colorado ski bum/ Mountain hip. Not Vail Bobo $3000 ski outfit. Let me start by saying that I am a firm believer that if a Mexican restaurant is a book, then chips & salsa are the cover. I also believe that you can judge said book on said cover. And let me just say that La Cantina's cover is drooooool worthy. I could literally DRINK their homemade salsa. It is a perfect blend of heat, salt and seasonings. And the texture...don't get me started. It's puréed. Not too chunky, not too thin, just right. The service is fast and friendly. The food came out quickly and was delicious and worth every penny! $2.50 tacos wrapped in homemade crispy corn shells. In Vail. What?! Yes it's true. I will be dreaming about and craving the beef tacos until I return. The burger was HUGE! The taco salad was HUGE! Lost a star today. 1st the manager/owner was so focused on some ticket issue that he was completely blind to our standing there and waiting for him to give an opening to a ready employee to take our order. Food was again excellent and very affordable. 2ndly the fro-yo bar is highway robbery. We paid $20 for our lunch. We also paid $20 for 2 cups of fro-yo. They were large cups - probably $10- $12 elsewhere, but FFS at 60 cents an ounce you can buy a nice NY steak at the store (on sale). read more

Jeff the pedi-cab driver filled us in on this little Vail secret (he also got pedi-cab customers out of it because this place is hard to find if you're new in town and lost). First night we went was late-ish and every single person who walked in asked if they were still open. We almost walked out but then feasted our eyes on cute waiter/counter-guy Kyle (think blond ponytailed snowboarder) and decided to gamble on the place. Good call. Margaritas were strong-ish. Food was tasty and cheap. Other patrons were amusing (girl falls off bar stool to hit head on concrete floor only to bounce right up before staggering away to catch a bus, which is conveniently located just upstairs). We liked it so much we returned another night and found the place packed with locals. Overall, a positive experience. Oh, and as a bonus, there's a locker room/bathroom/hook-up room right next door in transpo center. What more could you want? read more

This is located in the parking structure and is almost a closet in the structure. Think a small food stand in a run down mall. But... the food is really good. Not awesome but quite good. It's plain Mexican food well made. So nothing weird or unusual. The tacos are cooked in the fryer with the meat - the best way to make tacos. I was craving tacos so much while we were in Vail, and I'm so glad we found this place a couple days ago. We did wander around for a solid five minutes trying to find this place (thanks to the subpar directions we got), but it was worth it once we got there. The best thing about this place for me was the very affordable price. All entrees were less that $10 which is a rare find for Vail. The salsa bar was also a nice feature. My issue was that everything tasted the same. I ordered a taco salad, crispy taco, and burrito for me and my kids and the flavors all kinda blended together. Nothing really stood out to me. Great Mexican food. Staff seemed upset from the beginning. The person taking our order came off rude and told us we needed to tip them in order to get a basket of chips (which is completely understandable, but mind you, you walk up to order your food) the frustrating part was that the first time we went we were handed the basket of chips before even paying so we assumed our second time the chips were included. And the way the employee came off was rude and said "we don't work for free". Still not sure if tips are necessary to receive chips or if this employee was just grumpy. Don't go here, sure the food is ehhh...ok, but the service can be slow and management is sketchy. I recently had a post-shred meal there as i have done many times before and everything was fine. Untill a few days later when my credit card charge processed for $30 more than I had intended to leave. I can understand that this mistake can happen ( mis-reading a $3 tip for a $30 tip)..sure that makes sense...But the way they handled it was the frustrating part. First of all it took 4 phone calls on my part, all the while being told i would get a call back, before i was able to speak to a manager. When i did finally get to speak to the manager, he was rude and tried to flip the blame on me. At the time of writing this review(almost two weeks after visiting la cantina), i have still yet to see the refund on my statement. FAIL read more

This place used to be really good. Wonder what happened? I used to come by for margaritas and Mexican on Sundays to watch the Bronco game on TV. I haven't been there for a few years. I went a few weeks ago and was very disappointed. I came in around 2pm and there was no one to take my order. After waiting for about 5 minutes, a customer told me that she had "stepped out" for a minute. No problem. After almost 15 minutes, the nice lady from the kitchen came out and went looking for her. When she came strolling back in, she seemed irritated that she had a customer. A few minutes after I got my order, I politely asked if she could turn on the Bronco game. She rolled her eyes and said "if I can" but I'm not sure what that meant because she didn't turn it on. No one in the bar was watching the tennis match or the other football game, so this should not have been a huge deal. I went back up the counter and politely told her what channel it was on. She rolled her eyes again and proceeded to put on the game and made a snippy comment about the TVs to the customers at the bar. I thought, we're in a bar in Colorado, why wouldn't they have the game on? They used to play the games without having to ask to put it on. As I ate my lunch, I overheard her talking to the customers at the bar about how irritating customers were to her. She went on and on for about 10 minutes complaining. I thought maybe someone should tell her how to properly handle customers. If she doesn't like working in a bar with TVs and customers, she should find another place to work. The food was good and the margarita was good. However, the young woman's attitude will stop me from going back. I'd rather pay a little more for food than deal with someone who acts like it's an imposition to be nice to people. read more
