I had high hopes for this place... The ambience, there isn't any. They need to update their menu on Yelp. I was highly disappointed, what I hoped to order was no longer on the menu. They have really condensed their menu.... I ordered the birria tacos. Birria is usually soft and tender... This was like eating shoe leather. The consumé was subpar, not much flavor. Probably due to the fact that the meat wasn't either. The salsa wasn't very good. I'm glad I ordered a beer. My guest order a margarita and it was heartburn in a glass. This place is divided into a small eating area and a bigger patio area. The bigger area is closed off during the day and it looks like it's used for the bar and dancing activities. This is a place that comes with one complimentary bowl of tortilla chips and two types of salsa. So other Mexican restaurants either have bottomless chips and salsa or none at all. I assumed the former. When we asked for a refill, they did not tell us that this would cost us money so we got a surprise charge on our bill. I tried out their Nachos Libre and it was fairly good. The real issue is when we tried to pay for our bill with our split checks. We all had gift cards but they were too incompetent to be able to handle this separately. Imagine if you had separate bills and everyone in your party uses a credit card only for them to tell you that they can only take one credit card; it makes zero sense. Because their system was really screwed up, they just took my gift card which was super inconvenient. All in all, this place is filled with lies and horrible service. We decided to have an impromptu dinner here, a "just because" kind of night, and it turned out to be a great choice! I didn't catch the names of the staff, but based on my experience, it seems like the entire team is committed to providing a positive customer service experience. We called ahead to ask if reservations were needed for a party of two, and the person on the phone assured us that no reservations were required for a small party--only recommended for parties of six or more. That was a nice touch, making us feel welcome without any hassle. When we arrived, we were promptly seated and given chips and salsa to start. Shortly after, our server introduced herself and took our drink order. She was extremely friendly, helpful, and honest when recommending dishes, even pointing out ones she hadn't tried herself, which I really appreciated. Being in the food industry myself, I felt like I was in good hands. Her recommendations turned out to be spot on, and we really enjoyed the dishes. Throughout the night, our drinks were never empty great service! One interesting part of the evening was the opportunity to have a photo taken (with a frame for purchase). We felt bad declining, but being an unplanned dinner, it wasn't in our budget at the moment. However, next time we may consider getting the photo--great idea for a memento. The environment was clean, and we really liked the music. Some might find it a bit loud, but for us, it was just the right volume. When you walk in they have a lot of cute decor with a butterfly picture wall and other Instagram worthy murals. The rice was pretty good and flavorful and decent for a Mexican rice. The fish taco was awful. I was excited because they gave a very gracious piece of fish that looked well cooked. However, the taste was fishy and lacked any seasoning. The shrimp taco was better but there was too much lettuce and cabbage and not enough sauce or cheese. The carne asada taco i got on the side was definitely the best thing we got at the table - would suggest ordering this with rice. My boyfriend had the chicken chimichanga and he liked it a lot. The 3 stars comes from the understaffed slow service and the lack of Mexican taste to the food. Coming from San Diego and constantly visiting Mexicali and TJ biweekly to see family, it's very difficult to find any decent Mexican restaurants in the area. Most seem like American style Mexican, but nothing really homely and authentic. This place serves some delicious plates that aren't greasy or overly seasoned. Something like how my mother-in-law or grandma from the south of Mexico would make. Atop of that, they even put extra effort into making even the rice and beans near perfect. Our server was outstanding and very polite, and followed up without being intrusive unlike other places. The atmosphere was very relaxing, with live music not too loud and overwhelming. They give you a red and a green salsa and as a green salsa lover I was in heaven! The chips were also warm and just absolutely delicious. Got the queso fundido without the chorizo and it was yummy, a little thicker than I usually like but I honestly don't have a complaint about it. It was still very yummy! Margarita's were definitely lacking in the flavor department. Need more sour mix or lime juice or something for sure! My main complaint comes from my entree. I ordered the Enchilada's Suizas without a side of beans. They came as 3 cheese enchiladas with no chicken and they were TINY. I was honestly super disappointed because I absolutely loved the green sauce they came in and the rice was delicious as well. It was just overall really disappointing, especially because the Enchiladas Suizas were $17.50 and the Cheese Enchiladas were $13.50... so basically paying $4 for some green sauce, a small amount of shredded lettuce, a quarter size amount of pico and a dollop of sour cream. I'm in the food service industry so I am very forgiving and understanding of genuine mess ups, it happens, daily and it is just human nature. I did let the sever know and asked to not pay the $17.50 for the cheese enchiladas, and showed her the lack of chicken in them. She was extremely apologetic and changed the price of our meal. It was a disappointing date night but I'm giving 2 stars for the service and the appetizers. Won't be returning, and also the decor looks... unfinished? Still tipped 25% and thanked them very much.
