This past week, I came upon Ricano's while walking to my hotel. It's looked like a casual local hang out so I decided to give them a try. Very casual inside. Clean, decorated like it would have been in the 80s, but it gave it a cool retro atmosphere. I had the quesadilla and it was solid. Mexican style, sealed crispy pockets with peppers, cheese and I had mine with steak. The chips and salsa were very fresh, the salsa mild but flavorful and everything was good. I was waited on immediately, it seemed like it was family owned and I was treated like one of their own. Ricano's is a really nice local Mexican restaurant with solid food and great service. I'm in Chicago monthly and I will make this a regular stop. read more

We decided to check the menu and we stayed because it was conveniently located across the street from the venue. Surprise ‼ the food was really good, good size servings, the place was clean and comfortable, and the service was friendly. Fantastic spot. Great location. Usually there is street parking to be found. Food is excellent. Portions are excellent. Service is excellent. Atmosphere is authentic small, basic and clean Value is high. Check out the patio in the back during good weather. It's spacious little oasis. I've had their breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Mexican and American fare. Everything is fresh and tastes great. I am ordering their chicken soup to go as it is one of my all time favorites. The pictures are from two different visits. It was pretty standard except everything had chewy peppers dumped on it. Wouldn't have been bothered until I saw the final price of my meal with all the extra percentages tacked on. Stayed around the corner for a concert weekend. We found this place by walking about two blocks. At first glance it doesn't look like much just a closed down place. But inside it's quaint. The staff is friendly and attentive. I ordered chilaquiles with green sauce. The sauce was spicy! But the best thing was the pancake. Nice little spot on Ashland. Stopped here for a late breakfast. Got the Chorizo-Rito and a glass of Sangria. Both pretty good! Service was excellent. Nice spot just around the corner from the Chicago Hotel. They have Mexican and American. I got the pancake combo with scrambled eggs and bacon. It was all good. Only complaint they brought out syrup with nutrasweet in it. I can't do aspartame. So I cut up the strawberry my pancakes were decorated with and added strawberry jelly and butter. Husband got a ham and cheese omelette with a side of bacon. He ate it all so it must have been good. We both got Jamaica to drink ( pronounced ha mike uh ) hibiscus tea. This spot has my favorite patio, away from the crowded scene of West Loop. Lots of room to space out. Located behind the restaurant where you don't catch any cigarette smell from sidewalk smokers like you do on Randolph. The only way to make dining al fresco enjoyable for a curmudgeon like me is at Ricano's. They have both Mexican food and American breakfast. The guava margarita and enchiladas with green sauce hit the spot. Refreshingly, they serve hash browns the way they're meant to be--classic, without onion or green pepper. And I don't even like French toast but I love their almond French toast because it's not eggy. read more

This is such a cute little unassuming restaurant. I came here with my sister and boyfriend. We all loved our food. My sister got the guisado de puerco, I got the camarones a la diabla and he got the the quesadilla dinner. We also ordered some cantaritos which were very well made cocktails. The service was quick and friendly. They also have such a nice back patio area. I would definitely come back with a group of friends. They also have parking right in front. This place is such a hidden gem. HUGE menu with a ton of options. We came for brunch and sat in the back patio which was lovely. Everything felt very clean and they give you paper menus and plastic silverware/disposable cups. Service was incredible - checked into on us frequently and were very sweet. Food was indreibleee. I don't review much, I've become a regular here and I need to show my love. I LOVE this place. I honestly have only had the pastor, but I've had the tacos, the torta, and the burrito. You can't go wrong with any of these choices. I need to venture out and try more meats, but the pastor is so good that I keep going back to it. The service is always outstanding and it's always very clean here. My only complaint would be the tiny restroom. Highly recommend! read more

I had the Chorizo-rito which was essentially a chorizo and egg scramble with onions, tomatoes, & jalapenos served with a side of rice, refried beans, and fresh tortillas. Oh boy, did I feel like fatty afterwards? Yes. But was it worth it? Definitely! Food was great, service was excellent, and price point not bad at all! On a whim I decided to check out Angel's. Two reasons provided mostly by word of mouth, molcajete & margaritas. I've gotten to experience some excellent molcajete meals in different cities across the nation, so whenever I hear about a place offering it, I try to check it out. For those that don't know a molcajete is lava rock. It can be used to grind spices inside of and sometimes its used as a bowl to serve up delicious entrees. Being that its made of lava rock, once its heated it can keep its temperature for a few hours, keeping your meal warm and its gravy always bubbly. The evening we stopped in, it was dead. Kind of chilly outside and they had the air conditioning on full blast. Requests to have the a/c turned down went unheard. So we tried to keep each other warm with our warm conversation and cheery personalities. Aww, I know.. that sounded so cheesy. It was effing cold, Holmes. Downright nipply. Strawberry margaritas poured with a light hand but the strawberries were fresh and you could taste it. If only there was a better pour of tequila. Before the molcajete hit the table we enjoyed the house guacamole and a plate of some other entree (name which eludes me). Our favorite was the molcajete which we got filled with steak. The entree price is roughly $16 dollars or so and the portion big enough to satisfy two. Thick strips of steak topped with cheese and some random vegetables which are soaked in its lavishly, salty, gravy. Served with a side of warm tortillas and beans. Eying a few of the reviews now, I'm realizing I could have gotten some chilaquiles! Good to know its offered all day. I'm thinking I need to keep this in mind the next time I'm headed into the city for brunch or a much needed excuse for Mex breakfast. read more

Call me crazy to go against the grain with everyone's 4 star reviews but this was the worst Mexican food I've had in a while. In the past, I ate at a different Mexican restaurant & came down with a bad case of food poisoning. I would gladly eat that tasty contaminated food again than the food from Ricanos. I ordered bistec sopes that came with rice and beans. Bland, tasteless, and terrible quality meat. When I asked the server which meat was the best option he suggested bistec. No hope for the remaining menu after that experience. Limeade was terrible. I didn't finish my drink. Positives were the coffee and flan, nice patio, and lively music. Cinco de Mayo meal was a flop. I had an appointment down the street so I took the opportunity to stop in for a late breakfast. My first time there. Nicely decorated and clean. I was with a cousin so there were two of us. Only a few people in the restaurant. I was getting ready to sit at a table of 4, I was told I had to sit at the table for two. There was no big surge of people coming in. The food was good but it wasn't hot, just lukewarm; especially my meat. I like to receive my food hot. They were very attentive, checking on us if we needed anything else. We do have more upcoming appts, so I'll be stopping in again. Like I said, the Huevos Rancheros were good but the arracherra was cold. Also to my surprise, no decaf coffee. So my original review this page was for ANGELS restaurant not Ricano's. The first 2 photos, horchata and tacos with beautiful lettuce were Angels. The last photo is Ricano's tacos... For the life of me I don't understand why this page has the reviews for Angels but changed the name. As some other reviewers stated it's not the same owners. My hubby said his horchata was still very good, the guacamole was good. My tacos were meh for $3.00 each. My fault for not coming out this was for a long time. I came out to go to Rush Orthopedic right down the road. The staff was friendly my tacos just made me sad and I just don't like the fact that all the reviews on this page giving this place 5 stars are from when it was a totally different restaurant. Ordered a steak taco and chorizo quesadilla- both were topped with wilted lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream (not mentioned in the description) when the food arrived it was super soggy and falling apart. I also ordered the tortilla soup, very flavorful, but I wish they would of left the tortillas chips on the side, instead they put them in the soup and again, everything was soggy. We got takeout from Angel's on a Saturday morning. We were told ten minutes, and they were right. So quick! It's pretty nice inside, with white paper over white table cloths at the tables. It wasn't packed as in you had to wait, but it had a decent amount of people. Huevos campesino: I got this with the mole sauce. I'm usually skeptical about ordering mole, since many places don't taste as authentic. This place had great mole! You can taste many spices in the sauce, and has a hint of sweet and spicy. I enjoyed eating the egg covered in egg and thin slices of "steak" in the tortilla. Huevos con chorizo: Just how you'd imagine huevos con chorizo to be.
