My #1 mexican restaurant in the Ocala area. As you know, and you can see, by the number of checkin's and reviews I write about mexican restaurants... that I have a thing for mexican food. It's probably because I have lived in California so long and also... I think I have an addiction to refried beans as well... (and black beans). When you workout, expend a lot of energy or have a long day of work.... refried beans are like a shot in the arm.... it gives you instant energy. Besides.... I on a no pasta, bread, pastries, dessert or sugary things diet...so that means... I focus on "how much protein I can obtain with just one meal". So Im a very protein focused person and I like to get my money's worth. La Catrina's sauces on things are spectacular. I love it! The food just tastes that much more interesting than it normally does. This is a feat and a half. It's difficult to make most mexican food interesting... we are all so used to it by now. Probably the only place you can go to get interesting and gourmet mexican food is Mexico City (so I've heard)......but out here in Ocala ??... this restaurant does a pretty good job. This is one of those places where you pay extra for the experience rather than just food . The decor is full of sugar skulls , cute lamps on the tables , fake plants all over including in the hanging lights . Food presentation is pretty nice , well above the normal but way under high end restaurants . From the amazing fresh flavorful salsa to the main meal everything is bursting with flavor . Some of the food is very rich to where you can not eat it in a single sitting . Service from the hostess to the waiter was great , very polite . The food and the drinks are so good I took my mom there for xmas eve and had a great time. She loved the guacamole. it was fresh and delicious. I loved my chorizo and eggs. Had a milk style drink forgot the name but ti was really good. I will order that every time. read more

I had the Chimichanga Verde. Absolutely delicious...moist pork and a great sauce on top. My wife had a Birria Quesadilla and she loved it. In all my Mexican foods experience I'd never heard of "birria" until I saw it on a menu about six months ago. In case you've never seen it it is a slow cooked piece of beef made into soup with some vegetables including onions and cilantro. It was very tasty. CC offers it as a soup or as a filling for all the common entrees. Our quesadilla was filled with it, plus cheese, of course, and also a small side bowl of the soup. I think what I liked best was the broth and that I could clearly taste the cilantro. One thing I forgot today is that they make exceptionally tasty refried beans and neither of our entrees included the them. We were a large group of 25-30 people. Reviewed few places around this area (they are plenty of places for being a small city) We looked online and based on what the menu options showed it seemed like a good fit. Showed up, didn't do a phone call ahead or anything, they accommodate us in a timely manner. The food was delicious, well plated with plenty of food on each serving. This restaurant is amazing!! Our server, Kleberson was simply the best! His personality was engaging and he was on top of everything. The choriqueso was great. We had the carne asada and the chimichanga and both were the greatest! The salsa was great, the chips were warm, and the service was fast. Decor - check. Ambience- check. Food - double check. Service - triple check. Catrina has got it pat down. Good flavorful food, full of spices and satiates the palate. Came with family and enjoyed a delicious, hearty, flavorful meal. I had the Chilaquiles with green salsa (salsa verde), and finished the plate, the rice and beans, along with the cheese and their rice were on point. Walking in, I was really impressed with the decor and atmosphere. We were greeted and seated right away, but the server took a bit to come. It was pretty busy so it may not be the norm. I was excited looking at the menu, the descriptions, and the variety. Seemed a bit pricey but sounded great. When the food came, I was pretty disappointed. The portions were small for the price. The taste was not authentic Mexican, at all. And to top it off, my food had a hair in it that did not match the color of mine. I couldn't even finish it, so I left hungry. Honestly will not be back. (Ordered the pollo fundido, hubby ordered choripollo, which was tiny, daughters ordered California and Chingon bowls, and both were ok but not huge.) Again, very Americanized food, not authentic and flavor was ehh. But it's a cute place and service was ok, so I gave them 3 stars. read more

The service, food, and ambiance were all excellent. My husband and mother in law both got the carne asada steak, and they said it was well seasoned and not dry like other places. The street corn was good sour even without adding the lime. The horchata wasn't bad but they put a lot of cinnamon, so it made the drink gritty .The pastor tacos were delicious! Well marinated and I didn't even need sour cream like I usually would add for other tacos.The tortillas seem to be made in house and we're very good quality and fresh.I liked the tortilla chips as well. I love the food here. They have good prices for the happy hour drinks and appetizers. I do wish they would pick up on the service though. They aren't very consistent and sometimes it takes a while to get your server back to the table. read more

Bueno aquí va mi review. Primeramente esperamos casi media hora para ser sentados... será por la hora y el día ... Viernes en la tarde como a eso de las 6:30 hora rush! Se demoraron un poco en que llegara el mesero a nuestra mesa... Al traernos los totopos con la salsa, la salsa size para niños... o sea literal súper pequeño... ... Los platos tienen una buena porción, pero el sabor mejor se puede encontrar en otro restaurante mexicano.... O sea no es malo pero tampoco es el mejor... La decoración del restaurante eso si está a otro nivel, superrrrrrr linda, los baños limpios, la presentación de la mesa con una botella de agua muy acertado, los precios no son los más económicos.... The demonic face masks everywhere is a real turnoff. The service was lacking terribly this visit. When we waited for a while to get service & asked about getting chips & salsa, we were told that their policy was not to bring any until after the order was made. We were also told when we asked for Pico De Gallo that it would be an additional $2.00. That was in a small salsa bowl of about1/2 cup. When we went to pay they charged us not only the $2.00, but an additional $3.00. When we asked what it was for, the girl said that it was considered to be a large bowl & that would be an extra fee for it. She acted stupid like it was a natural thing. She said she would ask the manager. He refused to adjust the charge. We told her also that our fajitas said that they came with pico de gallo that we never received. The attitude was oh well, too bad, too late, but she seemed to be nice about it. The food had no flavor to it. The service was slow & lacking. We felt cheated. Although our Watermelon margaritas were not on the happy hour menu,(even though we thought they should have been) they were delicious. We are going back for brunch on Sunday. The remodeled space is fresh and inviting The fresh chips were crisp and generous in size. The in house salsa had a heavy tomato sauce taste with few chopped fresh Ingredients. The tortilla soup broth was flavorful but lacked cheese and chopped chili's and cilantro and fresh avocado. I ordered vegetarian enchiladas (2 cheese I spinach... the order was served I correctly and after 3 servers asked me 6 times about the order I cancelled it. The server did not know if mole sauce was available and the crisp shell taco I ordered was a soft shell . It has been open 1 month , however if service and or an alteration of a simple ingredient can not be mastered it will struggle. The prices are on the high side for the serving presented. My husband and I went to eat at Catarina. The tortillas used to wrap the food were stone cold. Not microwaved or even baked. Overall this place would get a C- at best. The tostado was in particular bad. I usually give 3 times trial before I won't go back. I will not return. On a good note the restaurant was clean and neat and server did fine. read more
