So I love their pizza. Plain pepperoni and cheese. I usually have it delivered but after a bad Uber eats experience we're trying to pick up our own food and so glad we did. As we pulled up and parked in the front I noticed the opportunity for a cute romantic date night lol. So I told my husband my plan and he agreed. I went to La Cava with a small group for a birthday dinner. We went on a Monday night so we were the only ones in the restaurant after awhile! The wait staff seems super friendly and they were attentive, but what struck me right away is the prices. Tagliatelle Bolognese $33!! Penne Regina $30!! And the worst was the Pizza Margherita for $24...absolutely outrageous for a tiny little pizza that's thiner than a piece of paper. Seems they don't list their prices on their website for a reason. You can get the same quality food at other Italian restaurants for a cheaper price. For the quality, it was one of the better bolognese dishes that I've had, but the birthday girl found a few small bones in hers. However, I didn't have any issues with my dish. They gave us little complementary pinwheel cookies for dessert and they were really dry and not sweet at all. Overall, the price is way too high for underwhelming food. They served me a 20 dollar BAGGED Caesar salad. Store bought croutons, limp lettuce, barely any of the mediocre dressing, with a few parmesan shavings as if to try and fool you into thinking it wasn't a cheap, SIDE PORTION of a premade salad kit. For what it costs, I expect a full salad with homemade croutons and dressing. The pizza is paper thin with a cracker crust that one gets with frozen pizza, one of the worst, most overpriced pizzas I've ever had the displeasure of eating. The steak, may as well be a Salisbury steak, smothered in an overpowering mustard sauce, I suppose to cover the fact that it's grey and barely seared. And for its outrageous price tag didn't even include a green vegetable, just a small portion of soupy, probably instant mashed potatoes. Got to check La Cava out for the first time on Valentine's Day. The setting is intimate with a darling outdoor patio.The host was very friendly and gave us our choice of table. The tables outside are a little on the small side, but the patio is very cozy as it's enclosed and has heaters. For Valentine's day they had a set menu where you could choose from one of two soups, two salads, and four mains served with a pre-selected dessert. I went with the broccoli soup, caesar salad and pappardelle. The broccoli soup sure didn't look like much but it was really good! Probably the most flavorful broccoli soup I've ever had. The caesar salad was pretty straightforward. Pappardelle had great truffle flavor and a delicious buttery sauce. Noodles were thick and fresh tasting. I wasn't crazy about the chocolate tart dessert. It wasn't chocolatey enough for me. Great wine and great service. I wish they had the regular menu available on Valentine's day so I could see what else they had/have more options. We were unaware they had a pre-set menu. I would come back again, and grab another delicious glass of Italian wine! read more

I have lived in Sherman Oaks 23 years and I will say I will never come to this restaurant again. The staff is incredibly unprofessional, and downright rude. There are better Italian restaurants in the area. The maitre d apparently did not approve of me wearing a mask and then became hostile and almost threatening. I've been here once for lunch, and really liked it. My friend, a longtime customer, invited me and I gotta say, the food was great. It's a pretty place, too. Originally we were going to sit outside, but it was too windy for me, so we found a nice table in their dining room. BIg menu, plus a number of specials, made it fun to try to decide. My friend actually goes off the menu, and requests things to be made that he has a craving for. I wanted to see what they actually offered, so it wasn't hard to find a couple dishes to try out. Insalta di Carciofi was delicious: baby artichoke hearts and fennel, roasted walnuts, pecorino cheese and olive oil. It had the perfect crunch, and wasn't soggy at all. Really refreshing and easy to share. Shrimp Risotto (Risotto di Gamberi e Zafferano) in Saffron sauce with a Prawn on top. So good. Risotto cooked just right, with plenty of subtle flavor from the saffron. Tasty and filling, and I actually took about 1/3 of it home. For Dessert, I often ask the server their favorite. Though there are many to choose from, our hands-down recommendation was for the Tartufo. When in Rome, or perhaps in Sherman Oaks, listen to the professionals. It was light and chocolatey and very satisfying. Also, a natural to share. My friend put toghether his own grilled seafood plate which he then ate along with his salad. Very creative, and healthful. I liked it here. I look forward to going back. This place is probably more like 4.5 stars, but I want to try a few more things. But so far, so delish ! read more

So, I edited my review, not taking it down (how dare you...) and since I addressed this you can't take any legal action so don't even try it! This is a whole new review and I've already addressed your cease and desist notice to my previous posting. This is a different posting, if you still have a problem with it then let me know. -New Yelp Review- Deranged/strange service, mediocre food, No hospitality nor respect. I talked to my mother who said the problem about racism is that no one ever wants to admit they are but they're fearless when it comes to how they treat you because it's one groups word/voice over yours. They'll call you crazy, laugh and move on because it's familiar and comfortable, nostalgic even for some. It was amazing to see the show going on that night, felt very reminiscent of Django IN MY OPINION. The server blamed my 11 year old son because he took the wrong order... I FELT LIKE he simply didn't want to serve us (I could see it in his face/eyes how disgusted he was). Then he takes it back and brings back nothing... (A FACT) he says we all said we didn't want anything for my child to eat? (THAT WAS A LIE) THEN (no, I'm not done) he takes my credit card, goes outside and starts telling the customers outside what's going on as if this was anyone's business but we were trying to leave but I literally couldn't. I went to the most rational looking person who showed some signs of morality and asked if he could go retrieve my card and process our transaction. I guess I'm just spoiled... being from NorCal where we don't get treated like that. It was just crazy to see Hispanic men (men of color) treating us this way. Then the table of Karen's who were mocking me while my daughter observed was even more disgusting. We had a horrible experience as a family. I did my best to try to level with all of them to ask them to treat me with the same respect as the other paying customers without wearing the "crazy black lady" hat that they were all egging me to put on. This is a small restaurant THAT FEELS LIKE a very particular type of establishment and we were just wrong to sit down. I-REALLY-WISH when the server asked if we had reservations and I answered "no" that he would've just told me they were booked. We would've left and the experience would've never happened. I'd leave a zero star review, like the $0 tip I left, if I could. @Cava and all of the people there that night who thought this was cool/cute, laughable even... you should all be quite ashamed of yourselves. I'll leave judgement day to the powers that be but I know my girl Karma will help make this right. I may not be there to enjoy myself as much as you all did on Thursday but I'm sure it will happen just as sure as the wind blows. I came here a few times this year, usually having the chicken or fish plate which are both delicious with crisp potatoes. However today I tried the gnocchi which on my first visit here, was impressive. Today it was just ok little thicker than I remember. It was soooo soft and pink crème was not so...thick almost how it tastes when it's a day old after being stored in refrigerator. They KINDLY replaced it and the pesto fettuccine was very average.
