La Chatelaine has a great outdoor patio for a nice day. You go inside to order, take a number to your table, and they bring the food out to you. There were some nice pastries to the left, and then you can order hot/prepared food on the right. I debated between 3 and 4 stars because nothing exceptional jumped out at me when I went. It's a great place to sit and relax outside on a patio during a nice day in UA, but I wouldn't go and sit inside to eat or go out of my way to come here for food. read more

Cafeteria style counter lets you see everything before you a order and then what you see is what you get! Pastries, soups, sandwiches, quiche, croque-Monsieur/madame!!! So many choices!! Apparently there is lunch and dinner choices too!! We were there for coffee and pastry so we got the Croissant (plain) which didn't need a thing because it was so buttery, flakey and light! Then we tried the Almond twice baked croissant and I nearly fell off my chair it was SO GOOD!!! This is a MUST ORDER if you go to this place. The coffee bar had lots of choices. Everything you need for a great breakfast and it's self serve so you can try the different flavors!! I loved everything about this restaurant and highly recommend a visit. Sadly, this place just needs to try a little harder. The pastries and bread were amazing! I love the cafeteria style. The French onion soup was served with a side of cheese and croutons - that's not correct. And the flavor didn't come through at all. I had the soup/salad/sandwich combo... I chose the veggie sandwich - it was so sad (see pic). I had little bits of peppers & onion and a half of cucumber. My husband greatly enjoyed the escargot... so there's that! Such a cute little French bistro place! It's got charm but isn't stuffy or too fancy. On weekends brunch is served until 2pm thankfully! When I first walked in I was a little confused where to go but then realized it's 'cafeteria style' in that you grab a tray and utensils and go down a line to order and pay. Both items I ordered had to be brought out to me so I got a number to take to my table. I sat outside on the patio. It was nice and shaded with umbrellas. My cappuccino was brought out quickly. There was some spillage on the saucer and handle. I wish this had been cleaned up and a small spoon brought out. Maybe I was supposed to grab a spoon? Otherwise a nice fluffy cappuccino. The eggs Benedict was brought out in what seemed like less than 10 mins so pretty quick. Lovely looking brunch dish with plenty of hollandaise sauce. Eggs were nicely poached and very runny. They feature a large dining room, a bar, and a patio. We stopped in for lunch and I tried a apricot pastry and a ham and Swiss sandwich. The pastry was flaky and fresh, and as good as I've had in Europe. The sandwich was also pretty good, and I enjoyed the Dijon mayonnaise that was served and I really liked the fresh crusty baguette. Man, I really wanted to like this place! First of all, parking was really tight. Couldn't find any spots, but I found parallel parking right in front of it on Lane Ave. The space is not quite conducive if there are a ton of people. There was a line forming as I was leaving for church around 11:30. We had to walk through the tables to get to the door because space was getting tight. I got here around 10:45/10:50 on a Sunday morning and there wasn't much of a line. A few elderly folks and some families were already eating in here. It was kind of confusing going into the cafeteria-style line. My sister had already been so she told me and my friend how it all worked. Just confusing though. Kinda wish the menu was not in tiny print by the door because I didn't see it ahead of time. The guy at the counter greeted us with a Bonjour and was really nice. The line didn't move quickly though as the guy at the register was a little stressed. My sister got orange juice with fruit and a croquet monsieur. It was an expensive bill! $16 was freaking outrageous! Like why?? Presentation was absolutely atrocious. I ordered the croissant sandwich which came with eggs, sausage and cheese with coffee. It was $10! Why?? It looked like a pretty sorry sandwich that they threw on the plate. Literally, the egg was falling out of it and was so bland. I had to eat the thing with a fork. My sister had ordered it last time and said presentation was a lot better. It wasn't busy that time she came so maybe that's why they took the time to make it. You grab the cup for the coffee from the top of the counter before you pay. The guy at the register cracked me up! He told me that they were short-staffed that day and that a lot of the cooks at the back were new. He laughed but I know he was stressed about all of it. The line was getting long at that point. I'm glad he told me because I have a little more grace as to the whole experience being awful but it just brought my two star rating to a three star rating. The coffee was decent. Nothing special but good. I had the cafe du jour with 2%. My friend couldn't read the labels well and accidentally put heavy cream in her Colombian coffee. The 2% container was fading and I definitely squinted to make sure I saw it right but I would definitely rewrite the labels. It's not great if you've got poor eyesight. She liked her coffee but thought it was decent. She got the spinach omelet which also looked pretty pitiful. It looked like a plain egg with grease and cheese. Barely any spinach in there. Expensive too! Anyway, they are known for their baked goods so I'd totally come back and grab some to-go. I will add that the croissant was actually good. When we entered the cafe, I was genuinely surprised by how unique and beautiful the interior was! Also, the smell of freshly baked croissants filled the air from the moment we walked in. Jayme and I split a cherry pastry and for brunch I ordered the classic eggs benedict with ham. I was not disappointed! The hollandaise was perfect- not too thick but just the right amount of flavor. The eggs were cooked as eggs benedict correctly would be... and the pastry it was served on was flakey, buttery, and delicious! Overall, I would give this place a 10 if I could! La Chatelaine is a wonderful place to start the day. The ambiance is perfect for a French Bakery. They make their own bake goods on the premises and the odor of fresh croissants permeates the room. The tables are well set apart and the morning sun shines through the large windows out front. The light wood furniture. antique pieces and French pastoral paintings complete the ambiance. It is how you want to start your day, peacefully but uplifting. The business is run in a cafeteria style restaurant which is offsetting to the major theme and thus the four stars. As you walk in the line starts with trays, napkins and utensils to pick- up. Next proceed down the line choosing what you wish. The large display case at the start has a large selection of baked goods. Pay at the register and sit at a table of your choice. You are assigned a number and the order will be delivered to your table. I ordered the oatmeal which came with a side of cinnamon and brown sugar ($5.35). I also ordered the croissants which were hot, buttery and flaky, butter and jellies were on the side. Others ordered the breakfast sandwich which came with a croissant , scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, Swiss cheese and coffee ($11). Another member of our party had baguettes ($2.25) and French roast coffee ($1.95). They have a dining area on the front porch or you can choose to eat inside. Our weekly visits took a u-turn today. Coming in at 4pm with some overseas guests for many dishes we love. We were confronted with rude staff that was already hurrying to go home. They sold us flavored Pellegrino waters saying they have no added sugar, as they were out of non-flavored. Our food was sitting 10 minutes on the "to-be delivered counter" until I went to ask can we have our food. Escargots were burned and inedible. When I told our server that we come here weekly, but this is the worst experience we have had, the server just said someone will be told. I also mentioned that the drink that wasn't supposed to have any added sugar actually had 52% of added sugar. The reply was only that "I don't drink it, so I don't know". Come on, you work here and need to know what you sell. This visit left a really bad taste and we definitely won't be bringing any guest in again. If your last opening hour is intended for cleaning up the restaurant, then you should close at 4pm. Not give poor service and appearance that guests are not welcome. Really crappy ambiance. I really wish we didn't come in today, because visit to La Chantelaine destroyed what was intended to be a nice reunion over good food. read more

A nice French Bistro for breakfast, pastries and coffee on a nice Spring morning. Definitely deserving of a 5 star rating. I'm surprised to see it's not rated higher. We've been to their restaurant in Worthington a half a dozen times and it's always been a nice meal, just like the original which we tried this morning. My wife and I had the breakfast special with potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, toast and bacon. It's all very good though I'd like bacon crispier. The restaurant is very European looking with a lot of maple wood. It's bright and airy with windows letting in the morning sun. We've only been there for breakfast but I noticed their small dinner menu which looked enticing with escargot, Bœuf Bourguignon, and a chicken mushroom dish. We'll have to try this place for dinner the next time we're in town. On the way out we picked up some of their pastries which looked amazing. We had the cherry filled pastry (looks like a danish), a variety of tarts, and the coconut macaroons. They were as delicious as they looked. I probably should have started out with this but you must get the baguette sandwiches. It's really the reason we stopped at their restaurant the first time. For years my wife recalled her summer in Paris and insisted that the simple ham sandwich she enjoyed on the streets of the 16th Arrondissement was the greatest sandwich ever made. She may be right. I don't know if La Chatelaine's version approaches this mythical greatness, but it's very good. Really a great little bistro with delicious pastries and sandwiches. If we choose to dine outside home for any meal or snack it's not only for the hopes to have tasty & beautiful food but also for a decent experience overall including a nice ambiance, and friendly service and yes! this place delivers on all the above! Consistently! Always friendly & neatly dressed staff members; friendly with guest & I've noticed all are respectful with each other! I've experienced & witnessed the highly personable staff greeting patrons as they enter & I've even witnessed an unfortunate "Karen moment" in which the staff member quickly quieted by handling it with abundant graciousness & in my opinion undeserved respect (when the patron was being totally absurd) moments like that truly showcase stellar staff members & the overall morale maintained by management. We usually choose outdoor seating and receive appropriate attention even when we've been the only ones outside. I highly recommend a visit or two and my only complaint is that I don't live closer! However, it's totally worth the hour-plus drive getting there & yes, looking forward to our next visit! read more

I went for a late night dinner and picked up some food. It was about an hour before closing when I arrived. When I walked in to get something to go the girl behind the register just stared at me. I asked to order something to take out and if there was a menu I could look at. In a bored "why are you bothering me" demeanor she said the menus were further down. After looking for a paper menu I saw them hanging on the wall. I figured out what I wanted and walked back to the register to order. The cashier was annoyed that there was no one further down the bar to assist me and finally took my order. Service would only get 1 star. The food was cold by the time I got to eat it and had to be reheated in the microwave. I got the Vol Au Vent which was pretty good once it was heated up. Food would get 3 stars. Overall La Chatelaine would not be one of my top choices to go when there are other options around. read more

The cafe counter had three staff standing around but no customers in line. I stepped up to the cafe counter and requested my pre-paid carryout order. This review is for carryout only. I used to live nearby and would come often for their French onion soup and various other items. While passing through Columbus, my husband picked up some food for me as a treat. I wavered on the rating here, 3, 3 1/2, maybe 4... I made use of their prepaid ordering system online, which is easy. And as suggested, called ahead to make sure they would save croissants for my order (they say to do so with baked goods). Those croissants ended up being the absolute best part of the order. Unbelievable delicious. The French onion soup was good too. I also got the chicken vol au vin and it was OK, but just might have not been my taste. It is very rich, but I will say the chicken is good quality. I also ordered the beouf bourgoin in sous vide form (they have several meals like this) to have later in the week. When I opened it later in the week, I saw it was expired by more than a week. I called the restaurant to ask about it and they said it's frozen two months and then is good two weeks after that. I explained the date was more than a week ago, then they understood it wasn't any good. I was really glad I noticed as I'm more prone to stomach problems. I asked for my money back on that item and they agreed. When my husband checked our account later, they actually refunded our whole bill, which was very accommodating and professional. read more

This place is an old-time favorite, I used to come with my parents 15-20 years ago. What's nice is that from what I can recall, it hasn't really changed much at all, and that's perfect. The good is food no doubt. It's a french cafe with comforting staples like french onion or tomato basil soup and there's a great selection of quiche and salads. Also, take note of the dessert case when you walk in, it's brimming with freshly baked gourmet delicacies. You can create a box to go if you have somewhere to take treats! I think during lunch you can walk through the line, like you would a cafeteria. When we sent for dinner there was a server whole took our order. There are light strung from the ceiling and candles on the table. It's really such a sweet little place. I love La Chatelaine for breakfast/brunch. They have in my opinion one of the best coffees in Columbus. Their baked goods are fantastic. The servers are friendly and efficient. The atmosphere of the place is also relaxed and laid back-- I've actually recommended this place before to a friend who wanted to know where to go for a first date. But with that said, things are kinda pricy here compared to what you get. When I went yesterday, I got their prosciutto & brie baguette. It was absolutely delicious. It also cost almost $9, just for the one sandwich. Their portion sizes are also relatively small. I would come here way more often, and give them 5 stars, if the price was a little less steep! read more

Came in to grab some togo case items and was immediately greeted by friendly staff members. I ordered a croque monsieur which was basically a square shaped cheesy ham pastry. It was absolutely delicious and they quickly warmed it up while I picked out a rectangular chocolate layered mousse dessert, apple fritter, and large coconut macaron. The total was $17.90 for the four items. The mousse dessert was deliciously chocolatey with fluffy layers atop a chocolate shell base. The apple fritter would have been the best I've ever had if it was sans annoyingly messy powdered sugar (useless ingredient only meant to make a scene IMO). It was thoroughly fried and deliciously greasy but not soggy or cold which was fantastic. The macaron was large and despite looking boring it was actually plenty moist and thoroughly delicious without being too sticky or sickly sweet. I was not in the mood to chat so I won't knock the young lady cashier for trying too hard to make conversation (where do you work? Is it a good day? Are you a nurse? Etc), but I would advise that if someone gives curt answers and looks unenthused at your line of questioning to immediately back off so they don't feel pushed like I did. This is more of 3 1/2 star review. The set up is cafeteria meets cafe. The pastry Brikette was delicious, filled with spinachy cheesy goodness. The quiche was tasty but a bit on the dry side, the French Onion soup was packed full of flavor but lukewarm, it just needed some heat and I think the richness of the soup would have come out. They served Stauf's coffee, always a plus, and the overall decor was classic and comforting. The mac and cheese was absolutely amazing, and was a big enough portion for me to stuff myself and have extra for lunch. The side salad was alright, but I tried my friend's potato soup and would definitely recommend that if it's the soup of the day. For dessert, we split two different custardy cakes that are handmade everyday on location. They were absolutely delicious and worth the price. I'll definitely be back.
