We have been coming here for almost 40 years, mostly to celebrate our anniversary and frequently with friends. It's a real who's-who of political celebrities. The service is impeccable, and very European traditional. Courses are leisurely affairs, but soufflés must be ordered with your entree. We always start with escargots, and a wine pairing suggested by our server. I had the venison medallions; my husband had the saumon en croûte. The smiles on our faces were likely visible from space. Naturally, my husband had the grand marnier soufflé; he looks forward to this b every year and I had a lovely gluten free flourless chocolate cake that managed to be simultaneously light and decadent. Surprisingly, where we live now, the "better" restaurants are much higher priced. Even driving 250 miles as we did, this jewel of Washington DC is still a better value than any restaurant at the Delaware beaches. read more

I absolutely adore this restaurant. I've been coming here for the longest time. Since I was a toddler! I recently came about 2 nights ago and ever since they changed their management, things have been spectacular. The food is delicious and the chef comes out to speak with customers. THE cozy dimly lit place really ties things together. The only downsides are the space, there is very limited space especially on weekends. I recommend calling in for a reservation just in case. As much as I love this place, I found that sometimes the food is a bit salty. Which is what I experienced the most recent time I went. And some others before that. But overall this a great place to visit if you're feeling some great French cuisine! read more

Had dinner with three other people on a Monday night at La Chaumiere. The place was packed. We ordered the Cheese Soufflé, Muscles and Lobster ravioli as appetizers. The muscles were perfection. They were in a light wine and garlic sauce. It was great for sopping up with bread. The cheese soufflé held up beautifully and tasted devine. My favorite though was the lobster ravioli. I could have had just that and been happy. For my main course I had the salmon in puff pastry with champagne and dill sauce. The contrasting texture of the fish and the pastry made a great bite. The dill sauce made it the perfect bite. For dessert I chose bread pudding I was not disappointed. The vanilla ice cream lightened the sweetness, and cinnamon. Five stars would recommend. I've been there quite a few times over the years. It feels tired. I think it's under newer management & if so, they haven't done anything to update the menu or decor. We were told they had an arrangement with a parking lot across the street & it wasn't much of an arrangement. It cost a fortune. We'd have looked for on-street parking, had we not been told otherwise. Meh. There are better restaurants in Georgetown, imho. The food is competent, but not special. And, they need to spend money to update it for a more fresh look. It's boring. read more

This was my first time here and my husband hadn't been here in over 20 years as we live out of state. But the fact that this restaurant has been here 50 years and survived the Plandemic certainly says a lot! We would highly recommend it. The atmosphere is very cozy and it's likely you'll be sitting close enough to others to overhear their conversation. But it's a small space so they are doing the best they can. If you're looking for a more private dining option pick somewhere different but risk not having food as good as La Chaumiere. We started with soup, Lobster Bisque and French Onion. Bread and butter were also provided. Both soups were very good but be aware that the bisque does not contain lobster meat. I tend to like the places that place meat in the bottom of the bowl and pour the soup over it so you know you're getting a spoonful or two of meat. I realize not all recipes include that so I'm just making mention in case that's important to you. Otherwise, both soups were delicious. I had the salmon in puffed pastry with dill sauce. It's a bit like the idea of beef Wellington but with salmon. I loved it! And the green beans and carrots were served slightly crunchy which is exactly how I prefer them. My dish also included mashed potatoes so there was no need for another side item (besides my soup). My husband had the 14-oz Ribeye which was a special and not listed on the menu. It was $68 and included some greens and potatoes. The side sauce (not sure if it was butter or Mayo-based) had a delicious tarragon flavor. He said the steak was cooked to his liking and he gave it an "A" which is quite rare for him to do. And I forgot to mention, service was impeccable. Overall, go try this place! read more

Elegant touches, uneven rhythm. The evening moved slowly here... almost too slowly. The service had a languid pace that stretched the night, and while that can sometimes feel romantic, it drifted into confusion at the table. The steak was tough and didn't melt the way French cooking promises, leaving me wishing for more finesse. But then came the charms: the oysters Rockefeller were divine, rich and briny with just the right kiss of indulgence. The vegetables were cooked with such care, vibrant and tender, almost stealing the spotlight from the mains. And dessert... oh, dessert. That was the true seduction of the night beautifully presented, indulgent yet balanced, the kind of sweet that makes you linger a little longer at the table. Check out the video of the soufflé. A group of us had dinner here while in town for a meeting; we were celebrating the birthday of one in our group as well and so wanted to go somewhere nice. This was perfect! Two of us shared the Foie gras as a first course and it was rich and delicious. I enjoyed the trout for my entree and the accompanying potatoes and vegetable went nicely with the sweet, perfectly cooked fish. We shared some excellent wine and also shared an assortment of soufflés for dessert. The soufflés were delicious. Old country charm at the edge of Georgetown this place has all the components of a place that received a Michelin Star. A few updates and attentions to detail could get this place a solid 4 Star Review. I was treated to a birthday dinner hear on a chilly December evening. The dining room centers around a small harth in the center of the dinning room with a small fire warming the room. The space is a buzz with wait staff and bussers that are clearing tables and filling waters; but with as many tables set-up as possible the space verges on claustrophobic. It also didn't help that we were seated near the kitchen door meaning all of the action had to breeze past our table. You can tell that many locals come back to this place and are given two coveted tables/booths in the back, we saw several older couples/friends roll in, have 1 or 2 items and a drink, and roll out over the course of our dinner. I love that support of a place by the community. No bar seating means wine and cocktails might come out slower. Indeed, much of the service seemed slower at the peak of dinner, which was at odds with the fully staffed dinning room. The low number of restrooms was also a challenge in such a large/fully booked place. Now onto the food. Rustic French staples like Foi Gras served with toast, Roasted Oysters with herb butter were perfectly seasoned and came with extra bread for soaping up every drop of butter. The fish in the Trout Almandine was perfectly succulent and the Seafood Bouillabaisse was served with hearty portions of delicious fish. The beef dish (can't remember exact name) was also cooked perfectly medium and smoothened in a well seasoned jus. The price is very Georgetown but the quality is there. Maybe a calmer evening would let the true charm of this place shine but the bones are good! read more

We went for dinner here with my bf's family, who happen to eat here whenever they are in DC. Our party of 6 was taken upstairs for the seating. Service was quick and attentive, making sure we had our drinks in order. I tried an espresso martini that was delicious. For my app, I got the lobster bisque, which hit the spot on a cold winter night. My main was a stuffed pheasant with bokchoy and mushrooms and was one of the specials of the night. Never had pheasant before, so I didn't know what to expect, but it was ten, er and the sauce was salty and complex. My boyfriend enjoyed the soup du jour, which was a parsnip soup and a red snapper that was also a special of the day. I do think the trout Amandine is popular as 3 people in our party got it and thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

This was our second time visiting La Chaumière and it was a very pleasant experience. The service in this restaurant is excellent from beginning to end. It has a "home" sort of feeling. Some of our favorite dishes included the Venison medallions and the Beef tenderloin entrée. I loved that every dish was perfectly watched with more than one vegetable and a starchy mash. I was an absolute fan of the sweet potato mash that paired perfectly with the venison medallions, which were cooked to the perfect term thanks to our servers recommendation. I tried the Escargots for the first time and I am so glad I did it here; they were perfectly buttery and garlicky. We chose not to order dessert due to being very full from all of the generously portioned entrées, but we were able to see the soufflés which looked amazing from afar! This is the lowest rating I've given to a restaurant which had absolutely delicious food. I loved what we ate at this quaint Georgetown restaurant. The pike dumpling was served in the most velvety and delicious lobster sauce I've ever had. I loved the salmon en croute, despite its high price point. My friend liked his venison, although it was cooked far past his stated preference of medium rare (I like my meat closer to well done, so I loved it. Don't judge me lol!) I'm taking off one star for the service. It was very difficult to track down our waiter, who was very dismissive of us after we chose to not order wine. I don't drink, and this attitude was very off putting. Getting a hold of anyone was quite difficult. I'm taking off another star because a cockroach walked through the restaurant during our meal. That's such a brazen health code violation! Really no justification for that one. I hope they prevent that from happening in the future. read more

Visiting DC and looking to try new places to eat. On recommendation of a friend, I made a reservation at La Chaumiere in Georgetown. The atmosphere transported you to a French home, welcoming, social, traditional, and beautiful. I enjoyed looking at all of the bottles, Art, and wall displays. The restaurant was full but not loud, easy to carry on a conversation during our meal. Drink orders were taken quickly and bread followed. Our orders appetizers arrived timely and we enjoyed onion soup, Caesar Salad, and oysters on the half shell. Everything was tasty and perfectly prepared. Our entrees of veal scallopini and Dover sole were perfect, as our empty plates would confirm. Portions we great as well. Overall it is a place I would love to return to. I felt a bit underdressed as I was out for a day of shopping, had I to do it it again I would make more of an effort. The staff were friendly, however a bit aloof. I think our server could have turned a great meal into a exceptional one with a bit of attention, but it didn't detract, it just didn't add. Read the reviews and make your own decision. Restaurant Week is one of the best seasonal deals for foodies like me or those simply looking for a "cheap" date option or dining flare. There were some places I had in mind. Unfortunately, every place I wanted to attend was booked for days. I frantically searched for other places and finally stumbled upon La Chaumiere in Georgetown. It's a restaurant I've never heard of before and decided to explore with my friend. The Atmosphere: I honestly did not know what to expect. We arrived there and noticed that it was quite intimate, yet lively and very full. I really loved the rustic, French ambiance/atmosphere that added more to the intimate feel. The use of phones is not allowed (as in talking on your phone), which is an understandable rule considering the way the restaurant is set up and aim to accomplish for customers' ultimate dining experience. There is a fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. I am unsure if it's ever utilized. The Food: We immediately reviewed the Restaurant Week menu. - We both ordered the mussels, Moules Provencąle, for the appetizer. The garlic butter used to season the mussels was very tasty. We dipped our bread in the butter. The butter for the bread they gave us was a bit too hard. Two of my mussels had some shells stuck in it but were manageable. - For my entrée, I ordered Steak au Pouivre, medium. I must say I can give the dish the chef's kiss ‍. It was yummy and very flavorful. The black peppercorn sauce sent it to another realm. The steak was cooked perfectly, and I was upset that it was gone. I ordered a glass of Restaurant Week (red) wine to compliment my steak dish. The wine was good, too. My friend ordered the Truite Armandine. Her dish was phenomenal, but she did say it was a couple of bones in her trout. - For desserts, I ordered the Gâteau au Chocolat. I must say it was the least favorite of the meal entirety. It was merely okay & not worth raving about. The waiter refused to allow me to change my desserts out, though it was close to closing time for the restaurant. My friend ordered the Tarte Aux Pomme & it was so good that she practically finished it in under 5 minutes. I wish I ordered it instead of the dessert I ordered. Things that could improve: - Though the wait staff in general was nice, our waiter seemed too rigid & honestly rude. I would prefer a more friendlier and patient waiter if I come back. It felt like we were being rushed with our dish transitions (the reason why I give "Service" 3 out of 5 stars). Him refusing to change my dessert also bothered me. We were seated late, which made no sense as to why the waiter was seemingly acting impatient. - For the seafood dishes, it would be nice for the cooks/chefs to double-check for bones and shell fragments. We shouldn't have to crunch on shell/bones as we are eating nor pick through our food. Overall, we loved the atmosphere & rustic French ambiance. It certainly felt like we were somewhere in France dining & having a great time. Also, apparently, Julia Child used to frequent the restaurant, which is so cool to me. I see why it's Michelin starred food wise, not service wise. The restaurant would be perfect if some of the waiters were more friendly. I do recommend this restaurant, especially for an intimate, lowkey date night out in Georgetown. read more

For appetizers we ordered the escargot which went along perfectly with the bread that was brought over. The escargot came out piping hot and was cooked perfectly and not too chewy. For dinner we ordered the Dover sole and the scallopine veal. The mashed potatoes with the Dover sole perfectly complimented the fish as they were slightly dense compared to the lightness of the fish. It was also finished off with a slightly acidic but savory sauce. The veal was not our favorite as it was slightly dry. Upon reading other reviews I noticed that a few mentioned the service declined slightly after they did not order wine. However, we did not experience this at all! :) read more

Our group of 5 middle aged ladies made a last minute reservation here on a Friday night. La Chaumiere was a place that I could not even consider when I was a struggling college student in DC in the mid 90s given its fine dining price list. I'm so glad I finally got to make a visit, and was not disappointed. The warm, welcoming, and professional service we received from both the wait staff as well as the Wine Cellar Manager Jackson was outstanding. While we waited for our table (we arrived early), we ordered a pre dinner drink on the front patio. The pear martini was lovely. For dinner, I ordered a classic French combo of French onion soup and a frisee salad, and the table shared some soufflés. I love French onion soup and this was a delicious rendition. My salad was excellent as well. At the end of our dinner we pulled out 5 different credit cards and I cringed because I know wait staff doesn't always love that -- but no one batted an eye and we were quickly on our way. I would definitely visit this restaurant again when back in DC. read more

What's up with the negative reviews of La Chaumiere? We had an outstanding date night here. Warm (thanks to the open fire), cozy (small, intimate space), and classic French food. We were greeted warmly by the host, presented our vax cards, and were seated promptly at our reservation time. Our server was friendly and attentive with the drinks and food. He read our table very well, never interrupting our conversation unnecessarily, and kept the wine flowing. My kind of place! The dishes may not be as innovative as at other newer French restaurants, but that's not why we were there. We ordered classic dishes like the boudin blanc (so soft!) and veal scallopini (creamy goodness). Of course, the star of the meal was the Grand Marnier soufflé, which you must request when you put in your dinner order. Billowy, creamy, worth every calorie. Possibly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. Had a 630 reservation, one of them was running late. When ordering the waiter said we had to place all courses at once, we asked if we could order a bottle of wine and apps while we waited for the 4th person. He let us. Then he came back maybe 10 mins later and said we had to order all of our food even though the 4th person wasn't there or we had to leave. I told him to bring the check and close us out. The table next to us was allowed to order their wine and apps while waiting on another person, and they weren't given the same treatment. Unsure if it's because we are in our 30s and that table was in their 60s? The restaurant was half empty. He brought the check by 6:51. They cleared all of our app plates, bread basket and butter before we even were done with that or our wine. Go to Le Diplomate for much better food and service. We ordered the Grand Marnier and chocolate soufflés for dessert...both were so good we didn't even get a picture! Service was wonderful except when it was time to leave we were asked to wait outside for our Uber because they were closing (it was cold out!). Just a quick update - My parents came back into town for Memorial Day and wanted to go back to La Chaumiere. It was wonderful! The host hugged my mother, the food was great again (see pictures). What makes this restaurant special is that they pay attention: when we ordered dessert at the start of the meal, my father and I decided we could share one Apple Tart. My mother went for the Raspberry souffle. When they came out with dessert, they served the Apple Tart, cut perfectly in half, on two plates for my father and myself. No one else pays that much attention, much less makes that much effort. We had a bottle of the house Rose` - I'm not a wine aficionado but after a hot day of touring DC, it was welcome. For three people it was a reasonable $350 with alcohol and that was with a $70 tip. I appreciate even after Initiative 82 there weren't service fees or mandatory tips. They are truly, in the best sense - old school. Another pleasant aspect of La Chaumiere - it's not LOUD. My parents are both 80 and suffering from hearing loss, so going to a restaurant for a nice meal that blares loud music or has concrete walls makes their hearing aids ineffective. La Chaumiere is like settling down into a quiet Inn for dinner. You can speak at a normal volume and just enjoy your company. Once again, I'd strongly recommended visiting if you haven't before. There are precious few restaurants like this left in America. This is one of them. read more
