Horrible food. Service was even worse. The salmon en croute was obviously bought has a frozen entree . It was fishy dry and inedible. Wife had a lovely puff pastry wrapped salmon. So beautiful and delish! I had a special - seared Halibut. It was perfectly cooked. Nice and flakey! TLDR; This was the worst service I have ever experienced. Avoid this restaurant like the plague. Staff was extraordinarily rude and the owner (pictured) chased after us as we left the restaurant and yelled at us FOR NO REASON. My husband and I arrived for Valentine's dinner just before our reservation at 9 but the front door was already locked, with a full restaurant. A gentleman opened the door and said, "Yes?" I told him, "we had a reservation for 9." He goes, "HAD?" "We have a reservation for 9." We were seated and ordered drinks. My husband didn't have an ID on him so he asked if it would be alright to show them a photo on the phone. The waiter went to get a manager and that is when the owner, Martin Lumet, came to our table. He stood just over my husband's shoulder and stared at us. I said, "Hi, how are you?" The owner responded gruffly with, "Well, let's see it." We showed him the ID on the phone and he scrutinized it for a comically long period of time. My 30-year-old husband tried to explain his wallet was recently stolen so he hoped he could use a photo of the ID, but Mr. Lumet cut him off, "I'm sure you've used that story lots before and so you know that I can't accept this." Not sure if he was accusing my husband of being 20, which we would have taken as a compliment, but I was puzzled and calmly said, "Wait, if you can't take an ID off of a phone, why did you just carefully review his ID on his phone?" Mr. Lumet stared at me and then goes, "You're not drinking either," and walked away. I want to be clear, we would have been happy to accept a decision to not serve alcohol with our meal because we were missing a physical ID. We decided that we would see ourselves out because of the truly absurd rudeness the owner demonstrated. I stopped by the front desk and told Mr. Lumet, "We were not satisfied with the service so we're going to go." Mr. Lumet began yelling at me, I never raised my voice but told him he should treat customers with respect. He told me to write a review and then chased after us as we left the restaurant and screamed, "Get a life!" I would encourage him to get a GM who is good at customer service and can protect his investment in what otherwise appears to be a nice restaurant. Final note: this is NOT a Michelin Star restaurant. It doesn't even appear in the Michelin Guide. read more

Simply terrible. I came here with a group of friends. One of my friends made a reservation for 9:00 on a Friday night. Upon getting seated, the server immediately hit us with " the kitchen is closing so you need to order right away". Very confused, I didn't appreciate the way in which we were getting bombarded right away to order. This was especially strange given the time of day for an evening reservation that is expected to be busy and when they take reservations after even 9:30. Our other dinner companions had arrived earlier and they were not treated well by weight staff either. They were harassed for bringing a almost empty bottle of Coca-Cola. Our server also was not happy because we weren't ordering drinks or appetizers. I ended up settling with a cup of soup. However I was so upset from the service I could not eat anything. I simply didn't have an appetite. Two of the others in my party had the lamb rack. One did not have their lamb cooked well at all and pointed this out to the server. Instead of immediately apologizing and offering to redo it he simply said that the oven was shut off and there was no way to fix the bad prep. She opted to not continue consuming the food and they took it off her bill. No one came to check on us otherwise to see if we were enjoying our meal. I'm not quite sure how or why this place has a Michelin rating or how many people they bribe to get it but it doesn't seem justifiable. And there are many other French focused restaurants in the area which are better in terms of both food and service. I definitely would not come back here again. The staff seem to be hell-bent on making it a very unenjoyable experience. read more

We were there the day after Valentines Day and witnessed the owner arguing with a diner. Apparently the restaurant no longer allows guests to bring wine and pay a corkage fee. The customer was irate but calm because it was a special evening and he had dined there many times and never had a problem bringing wine. The owner really didn't handle it well. However our server was very nice and we enjoyed our meal. The place is still good but not the special place it was for many years. Small things: the restrooms were not attended to and there were no paper towels by 9:00. They must have added tables because it was a bit claustrophobic. The baked oysters, a mainstay in the past, were tasteless. But the soufflé was delicious. Not sure if we will come back soon. read more

My wife and I visited our daughters in DC. They booked La Chaumiere for dinner. The menu is great. I initially looked at the Scallops, but I have a garlic allergy. I asked between the tournedos of beef and the venison. The waiter recommended the venison. THE VENISON WAS PERFECT! My one daughter and her boyfriend never had venison ( he had beef and my daughter had Dover sole). They both were blown away by the venison! And they loved their entrees! My wife had the dover sole and my other daughter had the salmon. My daughter who booked loves the salmon. The appetizers (asparagusx2, cheese soufflé, French onion soup, and a salad were all enjoyed. For desert, we had one chocolate soufflé and an apple tart. Everything was top notch. Our waiter was great as well. Phenomenal experience. We enjoyed it all! For the 4 years I lived in DC and the 3 my kids have (so far), this is one I would recommend to anyone who loves French food. read more

Alas, I couldn't afford to eat at La Chaumière when I was a university student, but as soon as my friends and I started working, we went whenever we could! So as a result, we've been eating there for the past 40+ years -- and many of the servers have been there for quite a long time too. The rack of lamb, trout amandine, baked mussels, crab flan, foie gras, and veal scaloppine are among my favorites. My partner loves the calf's liver, trout, paté, and pepper steak. The atmosphere is French country -- lots of wood, rustic, and a great fireplace in the fall/winter -- and the wait staff is wonderful. They each have their own personalities and great senses of humor, and are very knowledgeable without acting like they know it all. With any luck, we will be going to La Chaumière for another 40 years! read more

Absolutely love this place. The ambiance, food and wine makes you feel like you're in the French countryside. The inside is beautifully decorated in a quaint, cottage vibe with a large fireplace in the middle. They have a great wine selection and food menu. We usually get the escargot and French onion soup to start. We've had the mussels and oysters as well which were both delicious. As for entrees, they are all so good it's hard to choose a favorite. This is the perfect place for a birthday dinner, anniversary/date, or a just a good night out. It's usually not too loud or noisy. The soufflés are made to perfection. It's hard to choose between chocolate and grand marnier so I suggest both!! read more

In the quaint little village of Georgetown you can experience something of a true French country inn. Be sure to bring an extra wallet, but trust me I think you will agree it's worth it. The ambience is quintessential Bordeaux countryside. Of course we had to wash it all down with 4 bottles of wine but all things considered I felt the wine list to be perfectly appropriate, decent price points for various styles offered. Thankfully it was not bastardized by any new world wines! I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area and am completely over our wine lists in San Francisco... this was a nice change up for me. Ok on to the food. We ordered a wide variety of dishes you can see from our receipt. It wasn't cheap, but... it was very delicious and the sauces were very authentically rich, yet light and quite French. I don't think it's possible to order anything that isn't fabulous here. The waiter did explain at the beginning that if we wanted the soufflé we should order that first so they could start working on it immediately since it takes awhile. We ordered the chocolate soufflé. Unfortunately I didn't take a pic before we polished it off with the last of our Beaujolais wine, but there are plenty of pics here on Yelp of it. It was light, airy, not as dark chocolatey as I would have expected. I was expecting a similar dark chocolate to molten lava cake but honestly the lightness of this soufflé balanced off nicely after the rich Demi glacé sauces we had earlier in the meal so I was good with the lightness of this. So if you are looking for a nice quiet, quaint and romantic place for a date night, or even just a business meal when in town, you can't go wrong here. Service was great, quick and not overly hovering. A good "go-to" in DC to be sure. read more

We simply love this restaurant. We have been coming here since the early 1980s. The menu has not changed much and there is so much to love. The salmon wrapped in pastry is a favorite as is the duck. My husband always finishes his meal with grand maniere soufflé, which you order when you place the order. The service is professional. The wine list delicious. Perfection. This restaurant is perfection. We have been a few times, we usually try to make a reservation when we are in DC because everything is absolutely wonderful. If you can make it during restaurant week you will get a bargain on an amazing meal for sure. Service is great, drinks come out quickly and food is presented beautifully. Worth every penny! The seating is "cozy" so if you are a larger person or need lots of space to feel comfortable eating you may not be thrilled with the tables. My advice would be: order wine and oysters and you will get over it quickly. read more

t's my first time at this restaurant for the Washington Restaurant Week in August. It is a very nice and cozy restaurant in the Georgetown area. The foods and services are quite good. We were offered two good menus (regular and restaurant week), and be able to enjoy special arrangement for some good selections in the regular menu (fresh soft-shell crabs meunière and Magret de Canard) - thanks to our great server. For the restaurant week menu, we went for Lẹ Pate Mason for appetizer, Medaillons de Boeuf for main course and Tarte Aux Pommes Chaude for desert. The selected wine list is also great! Well... It's a shame. They truly have to leave that rude French attitude in France. We don't need it here. My parents had lunch there and they told them they deliver. They even give them their card. It wasn't a language barrier because we speak French and they spoke in French. I called and the manger or whoever I had on the phone was extremely rude. I am sorry but you can clearly see on Yelp it says delivery and takeout. They need to update that information. It's not on Yelp to do so as they imply, it's on the business to update their information on yelp. C'est vraiment dommage. Do better. No need to be rude. Food was excellent, and the staff were very friendly. We chose this spot in part because they serve a souffle' as a dessert option. The food was prepared exactly as we wanted and expected, it was plated perfectly, and tasted great. The restaurant doesn't come off as French, but rather something more rustic. Still, it was a very nice place and the ambience was cozy. We especially liked that they didn't play any music. The restaurant is small so there aren't a lot of people creating a lot of noise. My wife and I were able to enjoy a conversation without having to speak loudly. In this regard it was a pleasant experience. The only negative I would add is the meal was rushed a bit. Since it was our anniversary we ordered a glass of champagne and some appetizers. We let the waitress know it was our anniversary and we were in no rush. She was very pleasant and congratulated us on our event, but unfortunately she didn't connect on the part about wanting to take our time. We were still enjoying the champagne and appetizers when our main course arrived. We did mention we were surprised and reitereated we wanted to go slower. The food here is actually excellent - haven't had impressive duck since my last visit to Bistro du Midi in Boston a few years back. And I order duck a lot! My party of three arrived, sans reservation, on a Monday evening. We waited 10 minutes to be seated and placed our orders for boudin blanc (mild chicken and pork sausage with apple), moules mariniere (white wine mussels), and magret de canard (duck), cooked medium. Almost an entire hour passed between the time of ordering and the time our dishes arrived. In the meanwhile, we devoured two baskets of bread. Their whipped butter is irresistible on an empty stomach! The boudin blanc was as described - very mild tasting chicken and pork sausage. Not heavy or greasy at all, but perhaps a little too bland for my tastes. The mussels were hearty, well-sized, and very flavorful - the broth however, is a little too salty to drink by itself or dip bread in. The star of the show was the duck, which was cooked perfectly to medium doneness. Juicy, tender, and fresh duck, complemented perfectly by vinaigrette sauce! I'll definitely be back for that duck! Overall, food was just great. Only issue was the tremendous wait time, but at least the cute and cozy atmosphere does something in the way of entertainment. I've heard that there is almost no wait for lunch so I'll probably try to come for lunch service next time I'm in Georgetown. read more

I can't tell you how glad I am this place survived the pandemic. When I say I love French food, this is exactly what I'm imagining. It's not overly fussy and contrived, just delicious, classic, French home cooking. Their French onion soup is what other French onion soups aspire to and the chocolate mousse is flawless. I would eat here weekly if I could. If you're looking for a hearty plate of roasted duck, cassoulet, veal, or truite amandine with some veggies on the side, you're in the right place. If you're in search of instagram-able, avante garde plating with lots of micro greens and foams, not so much. No tiny portions here, everyone leaves in a happy food coma full of butter. The inside of the restaurant has a cozy, farmhouse vibe with a central gas fireplace and copper cookware on the walls. They also have two separate private spaces you can reserve for special/closed events. The wait staff is exceptional old school hospitality. If you want to get dressed up you won't be out of place, but it's not necessary. For parking, in non-pandemic times you can valet at the hotel across the street for $10. The only suggestion I have for improvement is adding an intentionally vegetarian option or two, like a ratatouille or vichyssoise. There's a large menu with lots of seafood, but last night my friend ended up eating a house salad and a cheese soufflé for dinner. She wasn't upset about it, but they were pretty much the only two options for her. read more

I don't normally bother posting negative reviews, but I was severely disappointed in my experience here. My boyfriend selected this restaurant for Valentine's Day because it was one of the few places that didn't have a an expensive pre-fixed menu, as we're going on a trip this upcoming week and decided we want to spend more on our anniversary dinner than this one. Imagine our surprise when we sat down and there was a $100 pre-fixed dinner menu with no other option. Why was this not listed on the website long in advance when people were making their reservations? Aside from that, the atmosphere of this place was also just off. We were probably the only twenty-somethings in the entire place, and there was an air of over-pretentiousness that made me feel viscerally uncomfortable the whole time. Probably the only person in the entire restaurant that made me feel comfortable was our waiter--he was excellent, attentive, and the only reason this review is getting a second star. Bravo to you, kind man. Another aspect that I found extremely disappointing was that there was a sign at the front desk that said "Our of respect for other customers, no cell phones are allowed." Why would anyone want to pay $100 for a meal they can't even commemorate with a simple picture of their food and loved one? I understand flash photography might be distracting to others, or calls, but that really should be clarified on signage that's at the host stand. Overall, I would never return here. read more
