I've been trying different places for burritos. I stopped and noticed the huge dining area. Up front there are some items for sale. As I was looking over the menu that was taped near the register, I ordered the steak burrito dinner for what I thought was a good price. The lady behind the counter was nice and told me it was going to be about 5 minutes. I received my food and headed home. When I opened the bag, it was just the burrito. I was confused and called the restaurant to ask. I was told that the burrito dinner would have been a few dollars more. As I could have sworn the price I paid was for the dinner. The burrito was okay but filled with lettuce and tomato. Which would have been fine if it was equal to the beans and meat. The flavor was okay. The meat was tender and the beans were flavorful. I would go back for the burrito with a little more customization. I will update this review when I go back to try the Bistec ala Mexicana with chile de arbol. Plus I want to recheck the prices. read more

Ordered a torta de milanesa de res(breaded steak) for takeout and added the works. Came with avocado, cheese, sour cream, lettuce, tomato. The bread was super soft, and the it was cook just right. We never got our food. We ordered at 7:15, supposed to be here between 7:40 and 7:50. We expected a delay with Cinco de Mayo, but 8:35 rolls around so we call. They say the food is on the way! 9:05 rolls around, so we call. They say the food is on the way....this place is half a mile from our house. How has it been in transit for over half an hour? 9:30 rolls around and I call to cancel the order. I'd have been fine if they told us they lost our order or that it was such a busy night, but they lied to us. Repeatedly. It's just not cool. And with the city being on shelter in place, nowhere is open now, so we're just not eating dinner tonight. They could have given us the opportunity to cancel our order with time to order elsewhere. If they were so busy, they would not have missed our business. Come on. That's just not okay. This was our first experience. Just really disappointed. And HUNGRY. read more

This is a great neighborhood place! I'd recommend to anyone in Roger's Park (I come all the way from Buena Park to eat here). The owners are genuine, nice people and have been in the neighborhood for years. It's spacious and clean inside and the atmosphere makes me feel like I'm at home. Most importantly, the food is always so good. I've gotten a lot of different things on their menu - enchiladas, mole, skirt steak, tacos, pozole, burritos - and have never been disappointed. Our first time trying La Choza was as take-out. The second time we dined in, and now we have TWO great ways to access tasty Mexican fare! It's a clean, bright establishment with clean updated restrooms. There was an open kitchen (well, a large pass-through window anyway), the food was cooked to order, and our waitress was attentive. I tried the chilaquiles (verde) this time and was very happy. I took some home and still delicious next-day! We ordered the chorizo gordita again but decided we liked it better when it came delivery. This second time in-restaurant was a little dry. The hub got his usual steak burrito and we did tongue tacos again too without complaint. The bill was reasonable which we anticipated since we'd ordered a prior time. The star of our dine-in experience was the trio of salsas - red, green and rustic, i.e. fresh, zesty and zippy! So inspired, I make my own version now at home of the finely diced tomato, onion, jalapeno and cilatro with squeeze of lime. This is an understated restaurant the deserves to be known. The place is spacious, very clean, and upon entering the restaurant the smell of the food is simply great, smells like great home cooking. The food is fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. The service is on point. The pork stew in green sauce is incredible! I highly recommend the super quesadilla with steak, which is served with fresh sour cream and avocado on the side. One is enough for 2 average sized people. The burritos are also great! One of my go to spots for Mexican food in Rogers Park. There are a lot of choices, from El Famous Burrito, Uptown Taqueria, Hernandez, and Rocky's Tacos to name a few. La Choza, holds a high ranking due to their authenticity of their food, the quality of their meat, and the consistency of his quality of food and service. The place is huge. If you dine in, I don't think you have to worry about finding a table. You can sit close to the counter and watch some TV, or you can sit in a secluded corner in a quieter spot. Service is quick and friendly. The restaurant is clean and welcoming with portraits of Frida Kahlo and paintings of places in Mexico. The food is amazing and priced to please. Some of my favorite entrees are breakfast dishes. The Desayuno La Choza is filling and satisfying with 2 eggs over easy, slightly spicy tomato sauce and onions on top, and rice and beans on the side. Served with fresh, hot, warm corn tortillas. The burritos and tacos are also a good deal. I like that they fill their burritos with the yummy stuff and not too much lettuce like El Famous. The horchata (sweet rice water with cinnamon) is decent, but not as good as Diamante Azul which is a little smoother and sweeter, which is my personal preference. If you want a taste of what home-cooked Mexican food can be like and aren't lucky enough to have a Mexican mom to cook for you, this place comes in at a pretty close second to my Mom's home cooking. read more

Not good. Their tacos steak tacos taste like cardboard to me. The meat and tortilla is extremely dry to me and the taco lacked flavor. On top of it service is extremely service slow. It took our server forever to even get us water for our meal! We were finished and waiting for the check before she came to bring us water. I'd skip this place. read more

I used to love this place. But the last few times have been disapointing and I wine be going back. When my was there a couole months ago, his girfriend discovered a piece of stainless steel in her food. The kind found in a brillo pad. They offered him. A credit for their next visit. While she was reticent to return, she agreed. But there was no record of a credit Ave it was never granted. I owned my own business for 30 years and I believe in transparency. Which is why I object to the fact that they never give you an itemized bill. Just a piece of paper with your order scribbled in restaurant shorthand and a total. Tonight we questioned it and it turned out we were overcharged. In addition, the service was pretty bad. The restaurant is quite large and there were only 2 tables. The other was just hanging or watching tv. The part of the counter which wood give then a full view of the patrons is blocked by drink machines. Our waitress said "just tell me when you're ready. But we had to get up and go find her in order tob place an order. Like I said, I used to love this place. But it's overpriced and far too much work for mediocre quacamole and super greasy chorizo. I work very close to this restaurant and often stop for lunch to grab a couple carnitas tacos for carryout. They are delicious. The rest of their food is mediocre, and the service varies dependent on who is at the counter. I go basically out of convenience when it's too cold to walk somewhere better. I will NEVER be back, however, as today I received inexcusable service. The waitress completely ignored me even though I was the only person at the counter. I had to ask if I could order. When I tried to get my tacos, she snipped "No carnitas today!" as if I was an idiot to not know they didn't bother to make it today. I ordered a small soup and a pastor taco instead, even though their pastor is just ok. Instead of ringing me up, she ignored me the entire TWENTY MINUTES it took to get my food. When my order was finally ready, she tried to charge me $10 for an enormous soup. I told her I ordered a small and she claimed they don't do small soups to go. I kindly responded that she did not tell me that when I ordered and I was not willing to pay $10 for soup. Rather than working with me and admitting her mistake, she was rude and rolled her eyes at me. I walked out, hungry and angry and grabbed tamales from next door where the employees are competent and kind. read more

Excellent tacos at dirt-cheap prices! I got a taco dinner with 2 carne asada tacos, 1 al pastor taco, rice and beans for ~$7. These tacos are loaded with meat--the carne asada were tasty but the al pastor was really delicious. And their beans were amazing! I really have no idea how they make those beans so good. Plus the salsas that came with the complimentary chips were awesome on both the tortilla chips and tacos and pretty spicy. The reasons I'm only giving four stars are because a) I requested lime on the side and none was included and b) the delivery order says (in ALL CAPS) NOT to ring my bell, but the driver did anyway and it woke up my roommate. :( read more

La Choza es la chingona! I, though just a humble guero, can't say enough about the delicious tacos here. The carne asadas are good, but the pastor, carnitas, and lengua...que rico! I lived in L.A. for many years, another land of authentic Mexican tacos, and La Choza ranks with some of the best from out there. Also, their chips, and offering of three varieties of extremely fresh salsa, only add to the dining experience. The horchata es deliciosa. Service: always exceptionally friendly, and prompt. In fact, their Carne Asada is so good you might smack your grandma. It's a quiet little spot on Clark serving up some of the best Mex in RP. There are large tables for groups and small tables for small groups. The menu has all the go-to items plus some more unique stuff. The service is friendly and too the point. I ordered from here with two friends last night. We ordered pretty late around 10:30 pm, and the food wasn't scheduled to come for another hour. We were SO HAPPY when it came after half an hour! I got 3 tacos, 2 with avocado. The avocado was not great so I wouldn't pay for it again. For the taco meat, I got chorizo, carnitas, and carne asada. I guess the chorizo one disappeared, because I never found it! The carne asada was good but not as flavourful as other places. Very clean large place that has artistic fountains throughout the dinning area. They start off with bringing three hand crafted salsa. Wait staff speaks great English and they are super friendly. Great option on North Clark. We discovered it as it was the first place in this summer's Taste of Clark Street, and its offering was the enchiladas mole. My friend and I came here after seeing that our first choice was closed. Our experience was mediocre at best. - The chips that come on the table were decent but tasted almost store bought. The salsas were delicious though. - We both ordered Horchata, which can be hit or miss, and it was actually very refreshing and tasty. -I ordered a steak taco and a chicken burrito while my friend ordered two steak tacos and a chicken tostada. We both agreed that the steak tacos were delicious, definitely one of the best tacos I've ever had and it was only $1.65, although to add cheese, sour cream, or avocado costs $0.25 each for tacos, $0.50 for tostadas, and $0.75 for burritos. While the steak was mighty taste, the chicken was pretty disgusting. It was chewy with a weird taste on both the tostada and the burrito. Overall, the atmosphere was comfortable enough even though there was an awkward moment when we walked in where the employees just watched us as we looked around, unsure if we were supposed to sit down by ourselves or not. My ultimate advice would be to avoid the chicken. read more
