I was going to try a new to me Mexican restaurant and as soon as I parked they were closing for the night. A little discouraged, I decided to go to my regular open late spot. As I was driving there, I saw this restaurant. I stopped in and ordered a steak burrito dinner. I had to take a second look at the prices, because everything was so affordable. A burrito dinner for $9.95, yes please! The lady was very nice, and took my order. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place looks like it's been here awhile, nothing really stood out. Some might call it a hole in a wall, but to me it was just homey.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got home and was pleasantly surprised on the quality of the dinner. The steak was plentiful, the burrito was very simply made with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and I believe cheese. The beans were creamy without being soupy. The rice was good, not the best I've had. The wait was fast, no line, but most of the order was wrong. The toppings we wanted (cilantro and onions) were only added to one taco. The quality of the tortillas and meat (chicken and steak) weren't so great either. No seasoning and the tortillas fell apart easily. They gave us so much salsa for a reason... Seriously the greatest burrito I've ever had!! I came here for the first time yesterday and I'm SO impressed! Staff were incredibly friendly, food came out fast, and the price is very reasonable. When my fiancé and I got home to eat the food, we were blown away by how amazing it was (so much so that we got it again the next day and it was just as delicious!!!). This spot is a new favorite for me, and I will definitely be bringing my family and friends here when they come to visit! Great food and great people! read more

Taqueria Hernandez is a hidden gem in Rogers Park. I've been enjoying their food for over three years and I keep coming for more, about 2-3 times a month. Located at the southeast corner of Clark & Lint. The place may not look like much, but don't be fooled, their food is excellent and the customer service is always friendly. Their steak tacos are hands down the best in the area. Wait time is minimal, and the prices are very competitive, especially now with the current inflation. I strongly recommend the carne asada taco dinner (2 tacos, rice and creamy frijoles topped with cheese). Make sure to ask for some of their green salsa, which is simply amazing. I use to come to this local taco place for several years but after continously receiving the incorrect order I am calling it quits. The most recent order I received 6 steak tacos instead of the alpastor tacos that i ordered. We've enjoyed many a steak taco, waiting in lines, perfuming ourselves in wafting waves of steaky smoke, only to enjoy what was, up until a couple of weeks ago, the best taco we've ever eaten. I've been going to this taqueria since it opened, back in the 80s. Love the tacos, sopes, and tortas! Mom gets the caldo de res, I can only describe it as a beef stew, but not a thick sauce. That's my go to taco place and always recommend it. read more

Never again in life people! This AIN'T it! I came here last Saturday and ordered my standard steak tacos with a Jamaica drink. I decided to give them another try to see if they had an off night. When I got home my tacos were bathing in oil. Piles of grease on the meat, cilantro, and onions. I was starving so I ate one taco. I couldn't finish the other so I threw it away. Here is one of the rare instances when I REALLY need a half-star rating system. 2.5 in this case. In my old Lunt-and-Sheridan-dwelling days, I would stumble in here some late nights every once in a while on my way home from some point south on Clark (and once from the Mark II...ugh). I vividly remember one night in the early spring of 2002 when I got my burrito home, queued up an X-Files season 2 DVD, and then watched in horror as I lost control of my motor functions and poured the entire cup of hot green salsa into my burrito. Since I was drunk, I tried to scrape it out and insisted on eating the whole thing despite my mouth being on fire. (FYI--the red sauce is hot, the green sauce is HOT.) It was adequate drunk food, but I'd never had it sober until tonight. For $4.36 including tax I don't expect much, and wasn't disappointed. The chicken burrito tasted fine, if a little bland. It was actually satisfying without feeling too greasy or heavy. However, I found several gristley pieces in the meat, and that is a dealbreaker for me. Any time that I have to chew gingerly, for fear of crunching down on something that is not quite consumable but not quite solid either, is a bad meal. I would consider coming back if the conditions were just right, but I won't get chicken again. read more
